@obelisk21, someone before did mention a big oopsie with the physics but he must've been referring to something else because I am sure he would've mentioned it if he was talking about the wrench. Regardless, I get what you are saying. If that were to happen on the International Spacestation which is obviously in orbit then I think it flying away like that would have been accurate. But yea, they weren't orbiting anything at that point. Just wasn't certain if they were close enough to anything to have some gravity pull of some sort?

@@irishlatinoreacts1842 the wrench thing isn't that big of an oopsie. It would have been pretty bad if they had depicted it receding faster and faster, as the ship kept accelerating. Lots of world building in the first few episodes, lots of little details often in the background. I have watched this show countless times, and I'm still catching little references.
One of the things that is brilliant with the expanse is that it feels grounded, somewhere one could imagine living it, warts and all.

Welcome to the roller coaster that is The Expanse. A click is a kilometer. You will find no ship has actual windows, just screens. A LOT of the story telling in the Expanse works on the premis that you learn whats really going on, when the people in the show learn it. You are SUPPOSED to be confused and not know what's going on since none of our main cast has any clue what is happening either. The more they learn, the more you will learn.

just remember that Ceres has low-g, so when Miller threw the air filter guy into the airlock it was the equivalent of a 4 foot drop, not a 12 foot drop, so Miller wasn't being that reckless. Keep these kinds of things in mind, The Expanse rarely points out such things but expects its audience to be able to figure out things without having it explained through exposition. It's one of the things that make this a great show.

klick = km. The subtitles do not spell it correctly its not "click" Ceres is not a moon, it is a "dwarf planet" the largest object in the asteroid belt. Its about 40% the size of Earth's moon, so its normal gravity is about 3% of earth's, which is basically nothing. so, instead of living on the surface, they have "Spun" the asteroid, forcing it into a faster rotation than normal. They tunnel into the asteroid and live inside it, with the spin providing 1/3 earth gravity from centripetal acceleration. Thus when you're in Ceres station, "down" is actually towards the surface (imagine living on the inside surface of a tennis ball)
You'll find that The Expanse keeps to Real-World physics regarding science, kind of a "hard Sci-Fi" theme. pretty much the only fantastic technology in the show we have is the fusion drive that provides constant acceleration from place to place (and thus imitates gravity while in a journey). every other tech is something that we likely will develop in time

Basically, SyFy pushed them to cut the title sequence short so they could squeeze in another commercial or two. That's something House of the Dragon (and GoT before it) didn't have to contend with, because they're on a paid (non ad-supported) service. To their credit, the SyFy suits eventually relented and the full intro was restored later in Season 1 and stayed for the rest of the run of the series.

Ahah! Great to see a new reactor to The Expanse. Watch out; it may change you. Many of the people here in the comments have watched it through multiple times and will follow a reaction channel to try to recapture that "watching it for the first time" experience. That should clue you in to how good people who get into it find it to be. A brush up on the solar system planets, major moons of Jupiter and Saturn and the major asteroids might help you have a mental map in advance, but it's not really necessary. The Expanse does not hold your hand but it will fill in a lot of details indirectly over time. It will leave you with questions, but they will all be answered in due course. Well, all bar one.

XO is shorthand for Executive Officer, generally speaking and particularly in naval contexts, the second-in-command, reporting to the Commanding Officer, or CO. With the events of this episode, it's probably not particularly useful information for the Expanse anymore, but might come in handy when watching other things. Star Trek chose the aviation terms "Captain" and "First Officer," presumably because Gene Roddenberry was an Army Air Force pilot, but outer space military forces (as opposed to near-earth forces) are closer to navies than air forces or armies (most of the time they're even referred to as "space navies"), and civilian vessels almost always follow military nomenclature.

Some people might say that a full explanation would be a spoiler, so suffice to say the title is from the name Dulcinea del Toboso, a fictional character from a classic story from which The Expanse borrows names and themes. Ceres is actually not a moon, it's just a large asteroid in the belt. In The Expanse it's basically hollowed out (in large parts) and spun up so they get centrifugal force as "gravity". Most Belters are used to about 1/3rd G more or less. Julie is not a Martian btw, she is from Earth/Luna.
Being an Engineer with a livelong interest in space and SciFi myself, I loved this show's "hard" take on physics that stays as close to reality as possible in a SciFi show. This may be the finest science fiction TV show ever broadcast.
However, it does firehose you with a ton of information in the first half of Season 1.
They introduce a bunch of characters, establish the rules for a complex setting that skews very much (although *not* all the way) over in the direction of hard science; and set up a noir detective mystery in spaaaace.
You're *supposed* to be confused at first -- you only learn things as the primary viewpoint characters learn things (including stuff about the other characters), and half the fun is trying to guess what's going on and then learning how close you got.
As others noted, most of the locations mentioned in the show actually exist in the really-real Solar System, and while you don't have to do it if you don't want to, learning a little about the layout of the Solar System will help you ramp up the learning curve faster.
A few things to point out that are not obvious:
    1. This setting has no magical "artifical gravity" plates like in Star Trek or Star Wars or Battlestar Galactica.
    2. The only "artificial gravity" that gets produced comes from either acceleration or from spin (which is just acceleration in constantly-changing vectors that force you into a circle...).
3, When a ship is under acceleration, it feels like gravity and a human body can't even tell the difference.
    4. When a ship stops accelerating, it continues to move in the direction it was moving, until something happens to change that.
    5. In order to decelerate or change direction, the ship must maneuver so its engines will either slow the ship down or push it on a new vector. This is called, "flip and burn."
    6. Ships move according to Newton's Laws of Motion -- the pointy-end of a ship is *Up* and not "Forward," and the flamey-end of a ship is "down" and not "back."
    7. Decks are stacked like the floors in a building, and not the decks of a water vessel or aircraft, and when the engines accelerate the ship, they push the deck "up" against the bottom of the crews' feet, the same as an elevator does when it first starts up.
    8. That means the boots they wear are not "grav boots" or anything like that. They're magnetic boots that stick the wearer to the deck, and the wearer is actually "floating" in them.
    9. There are no magical "energy defense shields" that keep things from hitting the ships -- if someone shoots straight, the ship takes the punishment.
    10. There is no "faster than light" travel, and the fastest ship that ever existed (which appears in a flashback in a later episode) barely reached 10 percent of the speed of light after accelerating really hard for a very long time.
IIRC, the date referred to in the first book of the series of novels says this story starts in the year 2357.
Oh, and coffee has an alkaline chemistry, so bad coffee is incredibly bitter because of that.
Sulfur, from the head of a match, however, is acidic.
So, if you put some sulfur into bad, bitter coffee it helps correct the pH and smooth out the taste.
    It's an old cowboy trick.

I do feel like I am drinking from a firehose but you all are helping a lot. I def did realize that the boots were magnetic and not something more special than that. As an engineer I also understand acceleration and deceleration. But good to know that there is no artificial gravity. So the Donnager was just spinning that entire time until it wasn't then.

"First Officer" would definitely place him in direct chain of command over everyone except the Captain. As second officer his responsibilities may have nothing directly to do with all the personnel aboard, ie, if in charge of ships systems they would be in line over the engineering department but not the navigation or communications personnel.

Welcome to The Expanse. Best show of any genre, ever. A lot of folks rate it as gppd as BSG, but [ersonally, I thinik The Expanse is significantly better.
I understand the urge to compare things to BSG (and possibly other shows), but The Expanse does not follow the tropes of any other shows. If you judge it, or try to anticipate what's happening by those tropes, you will be led astray.
I would also suggest that the acting is actually netter than you think. There's a lot of subtle things going on in the actors' actions that don't become obvious till future episodes...and seasons. That's kind of my way of saying, just about every line of dialog is important...as is the content of most video display screens and panels. A lot of that doesn't become obvious until a few rewatches of the series (I'm probably up to more than two dozen viewings...and still counting).

Thanks for the comment! It will be hard to not think of Battlestar as I am watching this show because (though it might be hard to believe) that is the only other sci-fi show with multiple seasons that I have watched. And if comparing it subverts my expectations to this show, I don't see that as a bad thing. And the acting comment was actually more on Battlestar than this show. I think the acting is great! It's just that at least right now, we don't have any characters with that "wise" older vibe, like Adam or Roslin. So maybe I am wanting for that.

  • @Sinewmire
    @Sinewmire 3 месяца назад

Adama wasn't just captain - he was an admiral, and a military one at that, whereas Captain McDowell is captaining a rust-bucket ice hauler.
    OPA is "Outer Planets Alliance".
There's a lot of references to Don Quixote as others have said, mostly names, like Miller, the Knight, and yeah, Dulcinea.
There's a LOT of info to take in in the first 4 episodes, so just try and keep a handle on what's happening and let the world-building filter in subliminally, you'll pick it up.
Why do you think Miller dresses like an Earther, hat and all?

And doesn't Havelock say that Miller's hat is like oh man oohhhh so totally Earth bruh? Haha. That's all I was going on. I can't imagine a hat like that being very utilitarian without direct sunshine overhead (so anywhere but Earth).

  • @kirkdarling4120

There is a huge problem with watching this series. It spoils you for everything else. Except Andor.
This is a mature story in that it was originally a role-playing game, then a highly successful novel series. The authors of the game and the novels are also heading up the screen writing team...they consider the series the "final version" of their work. Thus, even though the story is adapted for the screen, it is faithful in essential concepts to the novels...and even better.
Important: There is no filler in this series. Every scene, every line of dialog, even background information (sounds, screens in the background) convey important information. Pay attention to everything. Even in the first episode, they have laid the foundation for events in the last season. They can do that because they already know how the story ends. There is no fluff, and they don't hold your hand. Pay attention or you miss it. There are no plotholes or overhanging concepts, everything has an explanation, but they're not going to hold your hand.
The first few episodes do a lot of teaching realistic physics that other shows have misled people about. For instance, explosive decompression is not a real thing. There are no force fields, there is no warp speed or hyperspace. Real physics is a character of the story.
Because this began as an RPG, it still has a bit of its RPG DNA. There is a Paladin, a Fighter, a Wizard, and a Cleric.

Aren't both Irish and Latin American simply referring to place you were born?
For sure, Latin American is not an ethnicity. Gisele Bündchen, Alberto Fujimore and Vinícius Junior surely aren't the same ethnicity, despite the 3 being Latinos.

Umm, being Irish and being Latin American are not referring to where you were born, they are referring to your heritage. With your logic, I would just be American forever (and so would you). My great grandparents were born in Ireland and my father is still mostly 100% Irish. But closer to home, my mother was born in San Salvador (capitol of El Salvador). And she came to America in 1976, avoiding the civil war that was about to take place there. They met in Hollywood.
