A sci-fi trope is that the poor people in space stations would have leaky pipes, water always dripping on them from above, when in fact, the poorest stations would be the most careful of water and people probably couldn’t survive in a poorly maintained space station. It is a carry over from the poor on Earth having leaky roofs, or working in coal mines.

I am one of those guys that usually says "the books were better." But that's not the case for The Expanse. The showrunners made some slight changes (with the guidance of the original authors!) These things were great in the book, but wouldn't make great TV, so they changed events, event order, some characters, and overall made it flow better for TV. The books are great for some extra lore, getting to know more of what is going on in the heads of characters, and seeing a different way events play out. They are still for sure worth reading, but make no mistake, the show is in NO WAY a watered down version of the book! You are going to love this show!

    • @jasondolph2785
      @jasondolph2785 29 дней назад

Also the great complex characters. Avasaralla is a kind, gentle grandmother who is also ruthless enough to torture a young man and callous enough not to mind if it kills him. She is not simply a good guy or a villain, and she won't be the same person in season 2, let alone season 6. This plays out for all of the main cast and even recurring minor characters. Even Holden the space paladin is flawed, experiences flux, change, etc. also his acting is so under appreciated, especially his facial acting.

    • @Nyx_2142
      @Nyx_2142 27 дней назад +1

"with the guidance of the original authors!" Is an understatement and underselling it. The authors were writers on the show and Ty Franck stated they used the show to refine things from the books that they didn't like. TV also had its own constraints on it but what we have is, in the authors' opinions, a more complete and refined version of their vision.

Great characters (you probably don't realise it yet, but you've just met what will become your favourite character ever, and it's not the obvious one), and a great, fascinating story.

This story began as a role-playing game, and some elements of that origin remain in the story. The creators of the game wrote a successful series of novels, and those same creators are in the screenwriting room guiding the adaptation to the screen. They have called this the "final draft" of their story, and they stayed fully involved in its production.
"Welwala" comes from a Hindi word for "fellow" and the concept of the inner planets having deep gravity wells. But you'll catch on. Keep captions turned on.
This series sucked me in with the "flip and burn." I'd originally learned about this maneuver in February 1965 from the Robert Heinlein novel "Have Space Suit-Will Travel." This was the first time I'd seen it on the screen...I may have squeaked out loud. Like the best of classic "hard" science fiction, this show uses real physics as a character of the story.
As others have or will say, this show does not hold the hands of the audience. They show, don't tell, and they may only show you once. There is _no fluff._ There are no wasted scenes, no wasted dialog. Even details in the background give you important information. One reactor froze the scenes to read computer screens in the background, and that paid off. The writers know the entire saga from the beginning, so they have planted clues to events even seasons into the future into even this first episode.

Just finished the full length reaction. Takes some people a couple of episodes to get hooked with all the world building. I wasn't one of these, I fell in love from the get go, especially when I heard them say flip and burn.... showed that the show was grounded in real science, that ships need to slow down to change course etc. The fact that you love this pilot is a good sign, think you are going to love this show. (and yes, you will be cursing at the end of many an episode, when it comes to an end, lol)
Love the little details, like how the belters have their own creole language, and doesn't translate for you, making you feel like an Earther in a foreign land. The creole language is a bit of an amalgam of existing earth languages, and you actually get to understand it a bit after a while. For example Wellwala, the insult thrown at Miller, comes from the Hindi wala(meaning lover) and Well for a gravity well, ie a planet. So basically it means planet lover, a belter sellout to Earth or Mars. To make a real world comparison, it would be similar to the old insult of 'Uncle Tom' to the Black community in the US.
Other phrases you might hear frequently, 'Sasa ke', meaning 'You know', often used as a bit of a filler in a sentence. If you are familiar with French or Spanish, you can catch the roots of this.
Other little details, belters tend to also use their hands alot when they speak, because in space, they spend alot of time in suits, so gestures help communicate your meaning.
These little touches make the world really lived in.
There is very little filler in the show as well. They put things in for a reason, and often doesn't pay off for a while, but it was there. For example, when Holden and the Captain are talking about the XO position, and the Captain talks about Earth and Mars hammering out a peace deal eventually, it briefly flashes to a vid screen, with Avarsarala on it, labelled as UN undersecretary. That is the Indian woman, on Earth.
Don't worry though about missing things, I'm still catching little details after countless rewatches.
Looking forward to this immensely. Its an early birthday present for me.
(bonus as well, the Expanse fanbase is one of the most welcoming and supportive, and also really good at not spoiling)

Welcome to the master-class in cliff-hangers that is The Expanse. 😁
And there is no "anti-gravity" in this setting.
The only ways to have "gravity" is to either have a large-enough mass; to accelerate with engines so the deck pushes up against the bottom of the crew's feet; or to spin a station.
And, yes, that means the decks on the ships are stacked like the floors in a building.
The flamey end of the ship is "down" (not "back") and the pointy end is "up" (not "forward").

The two most important non-spoiler things are that author is a pen name for two people. The other thing is that they were active in the writing in the show so their vision and staying true to the books was kept. But they both knew some things have to change for a TV medium, so they did so without changing the main story. Some characters in the books are changed or combined where needed, but it is still follows the books well.

You caught something fairly subtle...whenever a scene is in zero-g, they use "floaty" camera movement. Ships in this show often switch between operating under thrust gravity (when the engines are on and the acceleration pulls everything toward the floor), and being "on the float", coasting with engines off with everyone in zero-g.

How does a rat... (get into space)?
Same way they make it to the open seas, on Earth... Cargo, specifically foodstuffs.
We've probably told you lots already, but here's a quick, zero-spoiler rundown on what to expect:
    - Expect top tier writing, acting, worldbuilding and character development. Second to none -- and I've been watching science-fiction since the late 60s, so I don't make that claim lightly!
    - Expect a serious effort to remain as close to real space physics as good storytelling will allow. It's impossible to get it all perfect, but nobody tries harder. You won't notice most of the failings, but you will wonder out loud at some of the stuff you would think was impossible but isn't.
    - Expect to be treated like an adult, and not be spoon-fed the plot... Pay attention to everything -- this level of show costs money, so they have no time to waste holding your hand. All the answers will be coming in their own good time.
    - Expect to laugh, expect to cry... and occasionally, expect to want to throw stuff at your screen in frustration because they just ended another episode on a damn cliffhanger!
    - And last, but not least, expect to fall in love with as many characters as your little heart can handle! As in real life, no one on the show is all good, or all bad... but most of them are at least relatable. ;-]
Welcome to The Expanse, glad you're doing this great show! Cheers!

The world building in season 1 is essential for the full story of the full series and is a little slower as a result but the acting is great and I hope it gets you hooked. A little science fact relevant to this episode:
Between the writing of the first book and the filming of the first season of the show, a huge amount of water was discovered on Ceres in real life. So to preserve the book's plot point about the scarcity of air and water, the line at the beginning about Earth and Mars shipping off all of Ceres' water was added. It's a bit unfeasible, just considering the vast amount of water we're dealing with, but the Expanse certainly has plenty of uses for water. Not only can it be purified for drinking, it can also be separated out into oxygen for breathing and hydrogen for fusion (which is what's powering 90% of civilization in the show at this point). Steam heated by the fusion reactor is also used for the maneuvering thrusters on all but the largest ships.
So while it's a bit unlikely that Earth and Mars could have gone through the entirety of Ceres' water in the timeframe they supposedly did, there's at least several different reasons why they would have done it - especially when you consider that the population on Mars and the Moon in the show is about 10 billion people (only 6 million on Ceres for comparison).

In The Expanse, ships are built like buildings with one deck stacked on the other and ships accelerate at a constant 1G to provide “gravity”. If the ships drive is out - no gravity.
If the ship wants to slow down, stop, or course correct, it has to flip 180 and fire thrusters. If they are traveling a far distance, they have to begin decelerating half way.

The other kind of ending it's really good at (and you're gonna learn to love and hate at the same time because it's so good) is what i would call the "pushed of the cliff" kind of ending. Where other shows end episodes on Cliffhangers posing "What's about to happen" questions, the Expanse ends many episodes on "What the actual fuck just happened?" kind of questions/situations.

Might i ask how far along in watching this show you are currently (behind the scenes)? Is Patreon basically always exactly up to date or do you for example binge watch half a season and then upload it to Patreon over a certain timespan? Just to know what quotes from the books etc i can reference without spoiling.

The thing with Miller and the air filters was a story told by "miller" in the third or fourth book but it's based on something in his past. It's cool that that they turned it into a "corrupt cop" moment in the show.

Currently, for me this is the greatest Sci Fi show ever made (Firefly knocked B5 off the top spot, now its this). The books are VERY worth reading, and while the series is true to the books, the books give a lot more depth, and carry the story further than this great show did. If you use great source material, you can make great series. You have a great ride ahead, and some of the best characters ever written. Enjoy!

    Glad to meet you.
I hope you enjoy this most excellent series of video storytelling. It's crazy how good it gets, just ask any fan :)
Along with all the other good advice people give, I would like to say that the story really does evolve over time (as do the characters) and viewers are not supposed to clue in to EVERY mystery immediately. It's ok to say "gee, that was weird" if you feel that way. Though wild theories can be interesting too!
Can't wait to experience this amazing show again, through your eyes and ears. Buckle up, Beratna!

Absolutely love the show and books. From my experience, if you go the book route, don’t read any until you finish Season 3 and then always be one book behind the TV series. Season 4-6 line up with the books.

There's no artificial gravity on the show. When a ship isn't accelerating, people are in zero-gee. Those boots they use have electro-magnets at their bottoms, which allows people to walk but it won't stop tools, hair and whatever else from just floating around.

This world was created to make a video game that fell through then a rpg that fell through so a novel series was created from the left over worldbuilding. That's why there's so much depth to the story.

Books are definitely worth reading! You probably know by now that only 6 out of 9 main series books got adapted to TV, and those last 3 are definitely worth reading. There are some differences, more and more toward the end of the series but season 1 and the first half of season 2 almost exactly follow the first book. Some characters are introduced sooner in the show than the books to help blend the stories. As you can expect as well, there is a lot more detail provided in the books.

an immense sf fan, this series is amazing... among the best ever made. One thing about this series... I'm not one of 'those people', but this show also serves as one of the best examples of several strong powerful women in key roles... and the show/studio didn't say a peep about it. They just did it, and did it well!!!! I know I wouldn't want to ever come up against Chrisjen Avasarala in any context! Also her wardrobe through the entire series is amazing. It is a highlight of every scene she is in... when she is not ripping someone a new a-hole. Gravity is a b*tch... and then there is Chrisjen Avasarala... a force greater than gravity!

The books are excellent, but the show also is because the two book authors (who published under a single pen name) were producers and advisors of the whole show.
