This is WW1 as Charlie Chaplin first started making films in 1914 and became a big star a year later with the introduction of his Tramp character. Great reaction by the way your laughter was infectious and brought a smile to my face which I needed today

I've just Googled Charlie Chaplin's filmography, as I'm ashamed to admit that I have no idea when he was actually producing content. Was going to say about WWI, but Marty has pipped me to the post here - as have may others, I imagine!

She mentioned Buster Keaton too. To clarify, he started making shorts in 1917 and was part of his family's vaudeville act before that, though he is most known for his movies of the 1920s. At least, if wikipedia is right. Heh. :)

Both Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton were "silent screen" actors and their films had a big impact during WW1. Yes, this Blackadder series was set during WW1. If you want a real tear jerker, watch the last program of that series, when they all go "over the top". It was a brilliant ending of that reincarnation of Blackadder. Cheers.
It's WW1. I think it's your intuition of Chaplin's years that is a little off. He was born in 1889, so was already 25 by the outbreak of WW1 and already had a huge number of films to his name.
Bob is played by the same actress (Gabriel Glaister) who played bob in the very first episode of Black Adder 2, who ran away with flashheart at the end of the episode.

Every episode of this is overshadowed by the last moments of the last episode.
Some of the humour is silly but try not to miss the satire on the absurdity of war and the English class system.

The whole gender issue is, in part, a comment on a weird thing from early movies where just by dressing like a boy, women were able to fool everyone into thinking they were a boy. You'll find that troupe in a number of Robin Hood movies, I recall it in Thierry le Frond [a kind of French Robin Hood - I used to watch it back in the 60s when I was living in Quebec] and I recall that The Girl of the Golden West had that as a major element and likewise Sylvia Scarlett where Katharine Hepburn played the part of a young lady pretending to be a young man. It always seemed absurd to me because I couldn't imagine that just cutting your hair short and dressing like a boy would fool anyone - at least, not as shown in these movies. More recently you have Yentl as an example of it. Black Adder has used this in more than one season - the lady always seems to call herself Bob and I believe it is always the same actress, though I am less sure of that.

Megan,chaplin out of the equation you should of known this is set in world war one,the uniforms,the trenches, the references,they said ,world war one,fought by lions lead by 🫏 donkeys.the tactics were barbaric, by the time of the second world war the generals showed alittle more empathy..

for God's sake read a history book, talkies came in in 1927 so by 1940 no one was watching Chaplin films Black adder never did WWII the one after this is a stand-alone single episode The Milenial Edition and in the end Black Adder finally wins
Nonsense. Of course people were watching Chaplin films beyond 1927 and still in 1940, e.g The Circus (1928), City Lights (1931), Modern Times (1936), The Great Dictator (1940)..... and into the 60s. Have you not seen or heard of any of those? For God's sake learn to know the subject before spouting rubbish while criticising someone else's ignorance.

The only Charlie Chaplin film I've watched is the Kid and that was released in 1921. Forgive me if I thought his career started in the 1920s
