@@rc-dk6by I’ve noticed that King Boomer doesn’t laugh at jokes he doesn’t get. Which shows he’s not laughing on queue. I’ve seen American reactors that have laughed at a joke. That references some obscure British topical story from 20 years. And you know they don’t get it and are just laughing on queue for the camera. I think it says a lot that Boomer pauses the show. Ardal O'Hanlon created the Dougal character by trying to create a human who was like a pet dog, always happy, never sees bad, forgets everything and gets easily distracted
Ardal is lovely. My partner is a carer for adults with moderate to severe downs and autism and other people with IDs in a day recreation service. He had taken them into one of the local pubs for coffee etc and Ardal who is friends with the owner had stopped by to see him. My partner of course recognised him, (anyone here would lol) My guy said hello to him and he stopped and spent time chatting with all the lads who he probably couldn't understand but it didn't phase him at all, he was chatting away to my partner probably wondering how he can handle 5 adults with different intellectual disabilities and needs -it ain't no picnic but himself is really good at his job, probably one of the best they have down there and he doesn't even have the highest qualifications compared to the other staff but they know it. So Ardal was talking to him about it while fending off a hundred questions that he could barely understand which himself has to translate but he was really patient and friendly and then took a few pics with him and the lads as well. He's a genuinely lovely guy. He doesn't come from far from here and he came on the comedy scene around the same time as Tommy Tiernan and Dylan Moran who are comedians and actors too and both from THIS town where Ardal was visiting. 🇮🇪✌️
I was convinced that the person doing the English dubbing over the Cuban priest would turn out to be actually there the whole time, but just off camera until they left.

By the way, the line: 'Down with this kind of thing' uttered by Ted and Dougal, is sometimes amusingly seen here in the UK on banners at demonstrations
I remember reading a book of the original scripts for Father Ted, written by Graham Linehan. He said that it was based on a French film called Je Vous Salue, Marie, which was screened at Trinity College Dublin. A friend of his went and was hit by a nun on his way out of the auditorium.

I am not sure, but I think the Implication is that at some point in the past Ted has spent some likely quite "hedonistic" times in Cuba with the Cuban priest hence his friendship with him and Ted understanding him.
background on Dougal's "Blockbusters" dream: Blockbusters was a 1980's game show for students (maybe 16 year olds or a bit younger?) hosted by Bob Holnes where you picked a letter in a hexagon from the board and the answer starts with that letter, leading to the meme "Can I have a P please, Bob". The implication is that Dougal is very smart in his dream or remembers stuff properly when asleep etc
Bishop Brennan having a son against his celibacy vows is based on Eamon Casey who was Bishop of Galway. He fathered a son with an American woman and had used Parish funds to provide for the kids upbringing.
I watch your reaction videos BECAUSE you pause and talk about the show! I've seen Fr. Ted enough times to know the dialog almost by heart so it's great to see someone reacting to it for the first time! And with Fr. Ted you sometimes HAVE to pause to regain composure otherwise you'll miss stuff!
Also, pausing is completely necessary to dodge copyright. The idea is that this is "fair use" for purposes of education ... You could argue that showing the entire show uninterrupted - and then commenting on its terrific editing, and acting and the methods used by the SFX and audio teams, amounts to education. But no. You're not allowed to do that - because people could stop just after the episode finished, and there would be no "educational" content SO - the compromise is that only short clips are allowed, followed by some commentary - to make sure you're not getting the entire show for free Failure to do this, especially with Channel 4 shows, means a copyright takedown or even a strike
This is one of many TV shows which mention the reveal/twist in the crime thriller film The Crying Game. I'm Alan Partridge (which is great) is one of the other sitcoms which mentions it.
Being from Ireland and having grown up watching Fr. Ted in the 90s, it was such a revolutionary comedy on the hypocrisy of the Catholic church, so controversial at the time when the Church was loosing its control in Ireland. Really well written and acting and timing is perfection. You have so many good episodes ahead with Fr. Ted as I think they got better as time went on. Enjoy and I look forward to seeing your reactions, it is so interesting to see how you perceive an Irish comedy and whether you get the subtle jokes. Thanks for bringing Father Ted back into my life.

One of the things that made father Ted so well thought are the little Irish things brought to extreme like Mrs Doyle's insistence on people having tea. Her "go on, go on go on" is just a perfect example.
I'm a native Texan, 44 years old. I would see this show on the local PBS station along with Doctor Who, Are you being Served, Keeping up Appearances, Red Dwarf, and other classic BritComs all through my xholdhood into my teens. So many awesome shows.
I came back because I love this episode so much, and love your reaction to it - but even now, after nearly 30 years something just occurred to me. I mean the very idea is mind boggling, but no wonder anyone except Ted and Dougal declines a cup of tea from her, because she makes tea how SHE makes it, and you're going to get that whether you like it or not! She militarised tea making - scary stuff.
You made a good point about how protesting something occasionally causes it to become more popular than was originally intended. Father Ted does occasionally make have a point to make if you look beyond the absurd and surreal humour. I won’t spoil future episodes by saying how, but even the Catholic Church itself is lampooned to great effect. It’s worth watching with a critical eye. Also, you’ll find that some peripheral characters make infrequent appearances, like John & Mary; but without doubt the greatest of them is Bishop Brennan. You’ll get to see him again, and each time he appears it’s somehow even more hysterical than the last! Complete side note, a good few years after Father Ted finished, some members of the cast and crew got together to record a kind of documentary on the making of Father Ted. Jim Norton, who plays Bishop Brennan, said that he could never bring himself to watch the final episode he was involved in because he found it so upsetting, given that Dermot Morgan (Father Ted) died the day after they wrapped up filming, and he’d such a great time filming the episode with him. It was kind of heart wrenching. It’s available on RUclips if you fancy watching it after you’ve completed all the Father Ted episodes. It’s called ‘Near, Far Away’. Very interesting to watch, especially if you wanted to know what the actors behind some of those characters are like when they’re not in character! Happy watching!

In case you may have actually have been wondering or thinking about the Church's reactions to any Films there when you got a bit lost in thought, Boomy . . .
In my translation studies class, we learned that dubbed films are more common in countries that have a history of fascism. Fascists favoured dubs because they were easier to censor
So good to watch you guys enjoying these brilliant shows. Graham Linehan wrote some amazing stuff. He makes a cameo in another amazing comedy series called Garth Marenghi’s Dark Place. Such a clever show and funny as anything. I think you would really like it. Other comedy greats starring in that are Richard Ayoade (IT crowd- must watch), Matt Berry (Toast - must must watch!) and Julian Barrett (The Mighty Boosh - must watch). Keep up the good work guys and keep laughing your asses off! Dan from England
Not just him but his fellow co-creator Aurthur Matthews also make a few cameo appearances as well.
it's so great you're both reacting to father Ted. I'm about the same age as you Boomer. Well done with the channel and all your success. Bonus points for the Jim Cornette t-shirt 🙌
Royal boomers. anyone who is complaining about pausing or cuting things out clearly doesn't understand how reactions have to be done to avoid copyright 🙃

You're right, I didn't even hear about Jimmy Carr and Ricky Gervais' most recent standups until the "Down with this sort of thing" campaigns that were all over the news about a month later.
There is some more cape action from the Bishop in a season 3 episode that I find hilarious entitled Kicking Bishop Brennan Up the Arse. So I recommend that episode when you get to it if you are watching all the episodes.
hey KM - BM , the show is based around dougal with Ted playing the straight man and Jack and the other characters as comedy support characters
Welcome to wonderful world of Ted. Been a fan since the first episode aired in '95. I love seeing first reactions to my favourite TV show of all time.

In case you may have actually have been wondering or thinking about the Church's reactions to any Films there when you got a bit lost in thought, Boomy . . . There was a bit of a Church kerfuffle when The Life of Brian (Monty Python) was about to come out and they were trying to get it banned everywhere. It didn't work out everywhere - and those cinema's that took no notice got record audiences travelling to them just to see it . . . And I think it was the same when Mel Giblet's film The Passion of The Christ came out, too . . . ?!
