On the dark ending note: I fucking love when the main character survives, but with lot of trauma behind, seeming never to end, like main character in Misery: he escaped, he killed her, but she will never leave his mind. It's kinda unrealistic to survive something horrible and then moving on like nothing never happened: I like to see that character still twitching and checking his backseat as you said haha

Yes! Se7en is one of the best to do this trope.
Something that I really love in horror movies is when the film leave things open for the viewer's imagination. A still shot of a dark hallway with ominous music. A look through a window in the middle of the night without knowing what's lurking outside. Also keeping some things ambiguous or unexplained helps making the experience more memorable since nothing is more scary than what your mind can come up with. When a horror movie gives me a 100% explanation of the events of the film I always end up disappointed.
The title card and music to Evil Dead Rise was INSANE. Loved it!!

That whole opening scene up through the title card was gold
I like not knowing the villains'/monsters' origin. The mystery makes it that much scarier and makes them feel almost primordial,like a force of nature. Michael Myers was so much scarier when Dr.Loomis described him as 'simply and purely evil' than when you found out he was being controlled by some lame-a** cult.
I do like jump scares like something barely visible in the background, when victims make smart choices but still are in trouble and I’m not going to lie, being in the woods is usually an exciting setting.
Something I like about A24 title cards is that they incorporate the elements of the movies they produce like in Midsommar, Lighthouse, Nope, etc.

I actually enjoy jump scares, the felling of tension when you know the villain is coming, specially when you are watching it with friends and you can laugh about who got the most scared
I like them when they “make sense”, like the sisters dangling head in Smile.
But I hate when the jump scare is literally just like…..someone’s friend jumping in front of them and then an insanely loud sound plays, like when does that ever actually happen in real life 😂
Three things I love in horror movies:
1. When a shot is focused on the main character(s), but the threat is standing in the background, noticing that sends major chills down my back. (i.e. the final act in Hereditary, the ghosts in The Haunting of Hillhouse, and Pipes in Ghostwatch)
2. This may be the gothic part of me speaking, but I adore a haunted forest setting in horror. The forest is a timeless location for a story to take place in, and if you have a scary story set within a cool, foggy atmosphere with whatever lingering threat is out there, that hits a perfect spot to absolutely scare the shit out of me. (i.e. The Blair Witch Project, The Revenant, The Ritual, The Witch, The Slenderman games)
3. Ghost children. Anything dealing with kids being killed will always put a pit in my stomach, but seeing their ghosts in stories will always be incredibly scary to me. They're like snakes; they can't control the amount of vemon they pump into their victims unlike adult snakes, making them more dangerous to encounter. And having children laughing and singing in an isolated location is just the cherry on top for them to be one of the most bone-chilling audio cues that I've ever heard. (i.e. The Ring, The Sixth Sense, Five Nights at Freddy's (games), Silent Hill (movie and games), The Others, and Trick 'r Treat)

Oh I love woods as settings. I actually love the use of fog in general. Like in The Exorcist with the street lamp. Even that is just so good
You'll get a lot of forest/the woods in lower budget horror because guess what it's cheap. It can be interesting how they light the scene. Sometimes I swear it's the crews cars light begin a line of trees. I've seen some descent low budget horror on Tubi lately.

I liked Eden Lake's dark ending. The main character seemingly gets away only to end up in the hands of her tormentor's parents. Devastating.

The Insidious title screen is just the best.
Agree with dark endings and death of MCs - I have an almost unhealthy obsession with final girls who don't make it. There's something so bitter and cruel about a character fighting hard to stay alive, only to lose it all and pay the ultimate price in the end.

The title reveal of John Carpenter's The Thing is one of my favorites! Especially after hearing the commentary where they explained that it was dcreated simply by stretching a black trash bag behind the cut out letters of the title and then setting fire to the trash bag from the bottom. No fancy CGI, just simple, practical genius.

For me, I like the background subtleties that give you goosebumps and raise the hair on the back of your neck. Great examples of this are in Halloween when a blurry Michael Myers sits up in the background and turns his head towards Laurie, or gradually appears in the doorway, mask first, as Laurie passes. The lady crawling on the ceiling over George C. Scott's head in Exorcist III and the mother hovering by the ceiling in the dark corner of the room in Hereditary. That to me is horror because it amps up the creepy factor.
I love violins too!
Furthermore I really like when it takes place in a beautiful building - like a mansion or a castle.
Audio signatures hits home for me. I remember watching Signs and being woken up in the middle of the night by clicking and it scared the hell out of me! Turns out it was my neighbour’s dog walking on the pebblecrete patio outside my bedroom window. I kinda love that one little sound can trigger fear and terror so completely!
I also kinda love it when filmmakers use the juxtaposition of bright colour with horror. We are so used to horror being dark and atmospheric, but watching a horror that’s full of light and bright colours for me is possibly more terrifying. It makes it feel like evil isn’t just relegated to the dark, that no one is safe at any time. Just….perfection!

For me the title card for the original 1979 alien was just so iconic. The way it slowly reveals with the music is so beautiful and haunting at the same time.
My biggest turnoff is jumpscares with cats. It just seems like a lazy gimmick.
My favorite inclusion in horror movies is a feeling of claustrophobic dread. Movies like The Descent and Alien where there feels like there isn't anywhere to run and the only course of action is a confrontation.
The title card of 'SMILE' is iconic and so freaky. I also love the one from IT Chapter 1, where the camera floats through the sewers, heading towards the light, where the title is. And also The Menu title card with its fabulous music.
What I love in horror movies is when you see something in the background or on screen that the other characters can’t see. Makes it seem that you are part of the story. Good example is the small boy hiding in Insidious or the many sightings of Pipes in Ghostwatch
The telephone exchange in the opening of the original When A Stranger Calls 📞 is outstanding as is the music .
My favourite horror film audio signature is "Hello Zepp" from the Saw franchise. When that music starts, you know something huge is coming, a big reveal, a big plot twist, and the main character of that instalment about to realize that they are deeply and truly screwed.

I love fire too, especially at the end of a movie, I think it creates an epic finale. I also enjoy things lurking in the background, like in Hereditary, The Strangers, and the series Haunting of Hill House

I love when a scare is slow to notice. Like it’s there the whole time, but there’s no dooming music, no sudden audio; it solely depends on the viewer to notice it. And then it’s THERE. It’s creepy as shit. A good example would be: Toni Colette crawling on the ceiling in the kids bedroom in Hereditary, or the ghost boy in the laundry room in Insidious.
I really like it when they show the ghost, the killer, the monster etc. without the stereotypical audio jumpscare but as a silent menace.

I love creepy soundtracks that don't even sound like music. Creepy violins, scratches, bangs, just weird sound design.
Maybe cliche, but i love love love when someone is being haunted by something. The scenes with ghosts in white, dreamlike scenes with pursuit, the waking up in the middle of the night to a sound, etc. The torment of something being after you, the unreal feeling.....there's nothing else.
I love when strong colors are used, green, red, purple.
Horror movies that take place in nature. In the forest, on the lake, etc. Also, folk horror.
Gore, especially practical. Movies should go there. Gore is the most realistic part in a story. People get hurt, things die.
I love a good revenge story! And a happy ending story, but with something that's still haunting the character.

I can highly recommend the pieces of Penderecki used in Inland Empire for screeching violins! (I think it's called the dream of Jacob the one I'm thinking of) His music is such quintessential horror movie music- I think it may have made an appearance in the Shining and the Exorcist too!
Yup. I was just mentioning this in a few places. The man was writing horror movie music that directors USED in their movies. lol. Polymorphia is just nightmare fuel. The Dream of Jacob has such a build up that I liken it to lying in your bed and hearing slow, methodical footsteps coming up your stair well beyond your door. You hear that gurgle and low moaning as something dreadful is slowly coming for you. Such an unnerving song.

Love raw character driven horror films. Makes me care more about the demise or escape. Also when the films don't reveal too much and keeps your imagination guessing.
Very good points! One of the things that I like the most is isolation, like research facilities in the Arctic, or in space. And let's not forget about end credits, and the musical choice for the end credits. Also *spoiler warning* Scream 1 is one of my favorite horror movie posters of all time for that exact reason! I love how it tricked everyone into thinking Drew Barrymore was going to be the main character of the movie and then they kill her off in the first scene. That's art! 💜
I love the shriek in old black and a white horror movies but in modern terms that would be a good scream queen performance. If done right it can be amazing and if done wrong it can be very mediocre for me.
I love when a movie has creative kills, and when a movie is really bloody. I also love a good jump scare sometimes.
Omg. As soon as you brought up the title card I immediately thought of Evil Dead Rise. The goosebumps that engulfed me, and still do! I would literally watch that part on RUclips just because of the title.
For your main character trope, this is how I felt with Hereditary. The trailer made it seem like the daughter was going to be the main character and when she died I was like… so what now?! Hands down best trailer to exist
This will hurt some souls.... but I love found footage. The good. The bad. I dont care. I see a movie is found footage, I watch.
I also love that jump scares exist and I love when people get angry at them. I fully believe jump scares are a necessity. Making a horror movie without at least a few jump scares is like cooking without salt and pepper.

Check out Krysystof Penderecki's music. The man was writing horror movie music in the 1960s that directors used in their horror movies rather than it being written for the movie. The Shining uses a number of sections from his music. (The opening scene music is Penderecki) Listen to Polymorphia and The Dream of Jacob with the lights turned off late at night.
The things that i love in horror movies are 1. The main protagonist slowly descenting into Madness(The Shining and Evil Dead 2) and 2: Lots of bl00d (Bothe the shining and evil dead had it).
i love when the bad guy wins. or when you don't know who is the killer and then it's someone close to the main character.
also, i like retro style horrors, for example the way they shot the tapes in sinister.. so creepy! vhs is kinda creepy too :D

- i love being shocked and thinking "i cant believe they went THAT far" (for example the eye scene in The Sadness, the finale of Lesson of the Evil, the plan in Occult, basically all of The Untold Story and Ebola Syndrome)
- satanism, black magic and the occult
- cheese and camp
- badass final girls
- extreme emotions (Day of the Dead, Possession)
Hi Emma ! The great director William Friedkin kills off the lead character in not one , but two of his films & sets up both for memorable endings.
What I love most in a horror movie is the atmosphere, particularly when there is thunder and lightning. Whether it's an old mansion, a high-rise apartment or a cabin in the woods, a thunderstorm can add to the uneasiness and the fear of being cut off from civilization. From "The Old Dark House" (1932) to most of the Friday The 13th films, the thunderstorm can be a character onto itself, adding tension to already stressful situations.
I also love a good dose of mystery with my horror. Both slashers and serial killer films can be even scarier when you don't know who the killer is. Is there really a monster lurking out in the woods or is it just someone's madness taking hold? Probably the most intriguing to me is taking the journey with the main character only to learn the terrifying truth of "How terrible is wisdom when it brings no profit to the wise?" The story ends on a dark note, if only the main character had decided to leave the mystery alone. Both "Angel Heart" (1987) and "Sinister" (2012) are great examples of this.
Finally, I always love a good creature feature, especially when it deals with creatures that are abnormally large. Giant ants, giant spiders, giant crocodiles, anything that becomes larger and fiercer than anything ever seen on Earth.
Great video💜 I agree with your yums my favorite is practical effects,audio cues and Fire. I love the Grudge growl (or whatever you wanna call it. Lol) and Freddy's finger blades on metal brings back great memories of being scared half to death the first time i watched it. Firestarter is a favorite of mine because of all the fire in it. I also love the killer or entity behind and unsuspecting victim and they have no idea they're there. My prime example is in the original Halloween when Michael sits up behind Lori i remember gasping and screaming at her to turn around he's not dead. "was it the Boogeyman?" "As a matter of fact, it was" followed by Michaels breathing goosebumps every time.
My favorite scares are lingering scares, where something stays on screen and is both terrifying standing still and when it finally moves. Also subtle scares that don’t involve a loud noise or even the character noticing them.
Examples:
•The naked man at the end of Hereditary
•The man standing in the house behind the main character in The Strangers
•The Babadook standing behind the neighbor through the window
•The Babadook’s coat and hat on the wall followed by the expressionless face of the police…
•The final shot in Skinamarink!!
Halloween has some great ones like that. Michael Myers in the window of the laundry house as Annie struggles with the washer, him looking at Laurie from the backyard and then disappearing. The reason why Halloween is such a masterpiece is because it has so many horror movie elements in it that legit scare us and uses it so effectively.
I like when something classical, a children’s lullaby, or a song so removed from the horror sphere is used.
I love scares that happen slowly and creep up on you. Thinking of the morning bedroom scene in "A Tale of Two Sisters". Jump scares are cheap, although if one is done well I can appreciate that. The problem is they can all be seen coming from a mile away.
Nothing beats the abscence of explanation when something horrific happens. Hereditary has one of the best examples of this
Similar to the screech: composer Mark Korven’s “Apprehension Engine" (The VVitch, The Lighthouse, how could I have forgotten Black Phone, etc), an acoustic mechanism that includes things like tuned springs and bands of metal that can be plucked or bowed, makes sounds that just set off my nerves and adds a kind of uncanny depth to a soundscape that synths don’t even try to achieve. I still don't 'recognize' it when it's playing even though I'm aware of it, it just builds tension so nicely.
I love it when the main character is killed early; AND the dark ending.Ive never got Martyrs or Baskin out of my head for that reason.Violins-tick! Fire-tick tick tick! A rainy; Gothic setting is another thing I absolutely love in horror.Oh and lots of "dread" if that makes sense,

I LOVE when a writer or director pays homage (not rips-off) another - like Freddy's glove in the toolshed of Evil Dead 2.
The title card reveal in Funny Games (both the original and the American remake) is one of my all time favorites.
Something that is really effective to me, is when a character is abruptly killed. Not seeing it coming is really scary to me.
Gimme southern gothic horror, practical effects, and a good score that will haunt my dreams and I’m a happy camper

A excellent recent title card is Love Lies Bleeding, which gives a definite sense of what we're about to see.
“it was all in their head”/psychological plot twists like when u find out they actually died a couple scenes before.. its becoming cliche but i still enjoy them
I love horror set in winter, especially during snow storms at home. Something so comforting and creepy at the same time to watch The Shinning, The Thing, No Exit, and others during a snow storm. Also love horror that just leaves you asking “what did I just watch?!” Even if I don’t like the movie if I walk away asking that it’s a good experience - usually.
I love unique jump scares. Some are really predictable and have been done so many times like the closing of the bathroom cabinet mirror. If a jump scare is new and original, I'm living!
Smile had a great fire burning down a house at the end
Not an actual house, but the structure burning down and collapsing, fading into Dani's smiling face in Midsommar, was an amazing ending.
I love seeing and hearing trees swaying in the wind. Specially in winter. Sometimes the wood makes a noise like it’s stretching
I love:
-A good wintertime isolated setting
-An iconic “final” weapon (think Jack’s axe in the shining, the insane weapon from Mandy, Ash’s boomstick etc.)
-Practical gore
-Really well earned scares that had a long buildup (example - when we actually finally fully see Pipes in Ghostwatch under the cupboard. Btw I love everyone mentioning Ghostwatch in these comments ❤)
Some ideas that popped in my head: Dusk's long shadows, flashlight or torch in the wilderness, well timed complete silence, creepy masks, long field or meadow with outline of danger in the distance, drone shots, love drone shots, hand-held camera shots.
I love a final girl who goes through hell and does EVERYTHING to survive like Grace in Ready or Not, or Rose in Silent Hill. Also, I love how they start with light colored clothes at the beginning and end up all drenched in blood.

I love when a character / characters are trapped in 1 place and they have to make use of everything to survive!!! It can show how resourceful and creative the director could be with a limited setting...
ie. Eden Lake (not really 1 setting but you get the point), P2, The Strangers
Violins are evocative!! I find they're the instrument that can bring out emotion from me the fastest and most effectively. Sometimes piano, but not as effectively. I'm with you on this one, Emma!

Title Cards... perfect ones for me are The Exorcist (gives me a sense of dread everytime), A NightMare On Elm Street (1984) It's so IN-YOUR-FACE with them synths! Darkest ending for me has to be The Mist! Screeching Violins are 100% BRILLIANT!!! Look at carrie (1976), the most brilliant soundtrack to a horror movie for me. Fire... made me think of Saint Maud straight away! Perfect cliche thing for me is a really good thunderstorm with torrential rain and lightening! Makes the perfect atmosphere for a horror movie :)

Favorite title card by far is Cabin in the Woods. You’re confused, not sure watching the right movie, and BAM! Unexpected title card jump scare! I scream-laughed.

my addition would have to be absurd amounts of blood. evil dead 2013, the descent, nope levels of blood. it’s always feels so visceral yet powerful and i think i also just love the color red in horror because i also love red lights!

I love when they use music that contrasts the horrific things happening on screen. Fave examples include Unmade from Suspiria 2018 (which is haunting and beautiful) and Singing In The Rain from A Clockwork Orange (which is almost scarily whimsical). It's so much more captivating and interesting to experience than putting generic horror scores or hardcore rock music alongside such scenes. I can't imagine how much Suspiria's ending would have suffered with a generic horror score and not that beautiful song
My list is very similar to yours with the exception of gore and fire. I don’t have a problem with plot related gore as in a ‘Hostel’ but I would rather see the gore than someone salivating or drooling 🤮
But what heightens horror for me is when the horror is the subtext of a film that plays like a serious drama. The best example of all time: ‘The Exorcist’-hands down.
I also like subdued, slow burn, understated horror like in the film ‘I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House’. The main character’s reaction when she finally sees the ghost is terrifying. And on that note, I like ghost or entities that don’t go “Booo” or don’t come after you with ill intent as in ‘The Sixth Sense’. Also ghosts that aren’t even aware they’re ghosts are far scarier than one that wants to “get you”. I completely despise The ‘Halloween’ franchise’s slow walking head tilting villain.
Freddy Krueger and Pennywise are the exception to the rule of the ”Boooo, I’m gonna get you” entity. Pennywise and Freddy’s taunting is devilishly delicious and creative.
Smart characters! There are so many characters making dumb decisions in horror films that when a character does something that actually feels smart, it's really satisfying.
I love really stylized lighting. Both the saturated, psychedelic colors of stuff like Suspiria, House, and Brain Damage, and the shadowy high contrast black and white of stuff like Kuroneko, Singapore Sling, The Haunting, and The Lighthouse. I feel like most modern horror goes for relatively naturalistic lighting, which definitely has its place, but I miss the drama over realism approach that a lot of old school horror movies took to how scenes were lit and colored
I enjoy the bold title cards as well, the first that comes to mind for me is Nightmare on Elm Street 2, Freddy's Revenge. The New Line Cinema font is so iconic and nostalgic there and then you have the abrupt metallic Freddy's Revenge card. Love the violins too, skittering may be my fav but its hard to say. Audio signitures are definitely a must and practical effects are everything!!!

I love seeing what you're into and getting a sneak peek into your brain I'm actually with you on almost all of these especially the audio signature or call back - it's the same in stand up comedy for me when they return to a joke they made earlier I love that! The only one I didn't resonate with was fire in a horror movie and not because I hate it but just because it doesn't make a difference to me either way.
One thing I love in horror movies and it's definitely a cliche, is a shadowy figure walking or appearing in the background behind the main character. Goose bumps every time - especially if the audio cues that accompany it are mild or absent.
I also love the scare "fake out" that's followed by a real scare just off beat. It's hard to do that one well now because we expect it but I still really like it.
Insidious has one of the best horror movie endings to me
I remember the title card for Smile was absolutely class! Fresh also had a great title drop over 30 minutes into the film.
I love a bleak ending, it's not a film but the ending of Devilman Crybaby was such a gut-punch of misery and despair, I loved it. I can't think of other "yums", which just sounds weird in this context; *but* a title card I love is from Rosemary's Baby. The choice to make the title look whimsical really belies the sinister nature of the film. Not to mention the background music, that somehow manages be both soothing and unnerving.
I love dark endings...the bleaker, the better. Also, when the final girl is flawed. The wierd one, is I love a movie that has NO likeable characters. Watching, knowing that most of them are making it out is better, I guess. The best is if it shows the final girl survived, but...they are traumatized. We are all imperfect people at the end of the day, and I love a movie more for making characters human.
Great video, Emma! CGI seriously gets on my nerves! And I love killing off leads at the beginning and, especially, halfway. I Came By (2022/maybe more a thriller?) had my jaw on the ground.
First off, I also love a big title card. And let me tell you, Love Lies Bleeding has a great one! My God it filled the entire screen. But as for favorite things, it's so rarely used these days because of the cost, but man when a movie is actually shot on film I just melt. Enys Men and A Wounded Fawn felt so wonderful to watch because that real film stock lends such a special quality to the image. One of our local art house theaters screens 35 mm films pretty regularly and we always make a trip out there to watch some classics on film. I appreciate how digital really democratized the medium, but I still love seeing actual films.
So glad you talked about title cards. Good call mentioning Baskin that one was great. Evil dead rise is probably the best opening title I've ever seen. The way it comes up from behind the horizon with her as she rises from the water. Just sooooo badass
