I decided the winter of 1989 was going to be my last winter in the northeast. I subscribed to a mail-order Sunday edition of the Miami Herald and began looking for jobs in the want ads. I had to travel to S. FL for four interviews, got a $30K/yr job offer, and was living on the Intracoastal in S. FL w/i six months! We were annual visitors to FL for over 18 years, we stayed on the east coast, west coast, inland, but we fell in love with the west coast sunsets over the gulf. We also enjoy that there are more areas less congested with high rises on the shoreline. I would suggest, before committing to a particular area, rent a house (plenty available on sites like VRBO), and live like you live there. I agree with Michael that vacationing isn't the same as living there. Also visit at different times of the year, traffic, weather, access to parks and beaches change, especially when the snowbirds migrate.

Love seeing the breeze in the palmettos! Nothing like a breeze on a warm day. I must be outdoors and can't take another dreary GA winter with no sunshine. The license bit just goes to show how the gov't has taken over, beyond their boundaries. I wish you knew about north FL since you make the best videos. That's about as far south as I want to go. I am going to start my natural healing business there, I hope.
Thanks! Sounds like Florida is really calling you back. Unfortunately I haven’t really spent any time in the northern part of Florida and that’s why I really never talk about it but I do plan to one of these days. Hope you make it back soon!
Looking to get out of Chicago too. I have a huge hatred for Chicago winters & cold. Plus I have health problems that cold makes 100 times worse. On a trip to Clearwater my pain level was significantly less. Def moving there in the next five years. Doing my homework now.
Ur videos r awesome dude ... Watching this from NWI 30 min from Chicago I hate the cold , family is holding me back from moving there... hoping one day to move in warm state Fl or California, love being outside
Hey thanks man! Super happy to hear you like them. Hang in there, I know one of the toughest things is breaking away from family to move somewhere new on your own. I plan on making a video on this topic soon. California is awesome too but it is more expensive. I plan on spending summers out there eventually to escape the brutal Florida summers. Hopefully some of my videos will be able to give you the extra push you need👌
I was born in NW Indiana, one hour from Chicago. You will be much happier in Florida! You can say goodbye to Lake Effect Snow, long winters, and the cold. I'm in Jacksonville. I love that we don't have snow or ice or bitter cold. Jacksonville is very mild. Bear in mind that people's definition of HOT varies widely. People in Chicago and NYC think 82 is too hot. This is the south, it gets warm for sure. But as long as you have an open mind, A/C in your vehicle, and central heat and air in your home, you're going to love it. Our utility company is nonprofit so you will save on keeping cool. Nearly every home has a fireplace which is often enough to warm your house when it gets chilly. After a couple of years living in NC, our insurance dropped significantly after becoming Florida residents. Come visit the Jacksonville-St. Augustine area. Venture a bit west and south. You'll know where to move. Michael is right, have a game plan. Base your residence location on where you work and on your lifestyle. Avoid the coastal areas to save on homeowner's insurance and flood insurance, avoid living too close to the highway for more peace, and avoid HOA residences to save on fees, drama, and ridiculous rules. I will never understand why people pay money to jerks that enforce dumb rules like not displaying the American flag, no colored curtains or blinds, no Christmas decorations, and needing written authorization to replace your front door.
I’m watching this while I’m working in Kissimmee, Florida during the pandemic. I actually wanna leave Florida since it’s getting too crowded with not just tourists every summer but in general. I’m working around tourists in the busiest area of the theme parks and man I wanna leave. I feel like people are bringing the virus here from the north lol anyways I wanna go back north but Instead of NYC where I’m originally from, I’m thinking Pennsylvania. Florida sunshine is an illusion I think, it’s beautiful but it’s getting pricey and VERY HOT!
That happens to a lot of people that move to Florida from other places. Most stay for a few years, decide it's not for them and move away. But if crowdedness is your only issue, that can be avoided in lesser known areas. Of course Kissimmee is a highly tourist area. But the heat can't be avoided. I'm sure you will figure out what the right choice will be😊
I live in Illinois now, and my wife and I are retiring in Florida. We have a ways to go until retirement, but we want to retire there. We both hate winter, and love the beach. I actually love Illinois, but I hate the cold. That's enough for me to move.
I love the beach too and I wanted to be somewhere near it all the time and that dream came true. I don't regret it at all. I hope you and your wife make your dream come true !
We moving to FL from California... I’m very curious to know how many of you watching this video are moving to Florida from California. Like this comment if you are moving to FL from CA..

We love Florida but will be not be able to move there as we're from Denmark. But we'll be back to visit as soon as international travel is permitted. We usually stay in Naples, beautiful area, very laid-back
Hi Michael I enjoyed this video. I live in Illinois also. I am retired and I am so ready to move. Thank you for your input. Will let you know my decision
First you need a Florida real estate license. You can get the Florida license in your home state. You don't need to wait until you get to Florida to take a multiple choice exam to get the real estate license.
You are leaving out a huge part of the workforce which is working online. Tons of people work online now and can move wherever they want without the need to plan as much.
watch more of your videos ha ha ha that is a good one but you should research the area and now with the web its easy. Yes have a plan or lots of money I have lived in Broward county since 1975 and still love it very much
Haha, glad you like that part Richard ;) Totally agree, its very easy to do the research up front these days and get a good sense of the area. And having a plan certainly helps!
Awesome video yet again .... I didn’t even think about the driving license issue. I’ll have to look into that. Thank you for that. Just another idea for a Video if you like :-). When buying a house (with a pool); what is to look out for people that coming from abroad. Do I need a special pool insurance? Hurricane insurance? Do I need to do a structural survey prior to buying the house (in the UK you have to do a home buyers report prior to purchase if you need a mortgage - also required by the insurance company- that’s why I am asking). Assuming the house was recently renovated (prior to being on the market) do I need to check valid planning permission? Approval by building control? Or is it any type of certificate I have to check to make sure I am buying a safe house. Are there any benefits in buying a house in a gated community other that it is just a regular neighborhood with a gate? Thank you very much again 🙏
Thank you Lior! I am not aware of needing any special pool insurance. When you buy a house though, you will hire an inspector, who will come and inspect the structure of the home, the plumbing, the electrical, all the appliances, the roof and all the cosmetic stuff too, including the pool. Then any issues that are uncovered are delivered to you in an inspection report,. From there you have time to review it, and see if you want to still move forward with the sale, ask the seller to repair some of the items, or sometimes, get a credit at closing for repairs. For insurance, you will need homeowners insurance for any house you buy with a mortgage. You will also need flood insurance in certain areas, if the flood plane deems it necessary. Valid plans and such, you don't have to worry much about that . Your title company will run a full title and lien search during the purchase process to see if there are any illegal additions to the home that need to be rectified, any outstanding permits, liens or claims on the property as well. Once they find everything is ok, then they will issue you title insurance at closing, in the event any claim comes forward that wasn't previously found. Wow, I think that is the longest comment ever lol! I will try to address more of these things in future videos 👌
Excellent info. Is it any cooler in Sarasota than Miami? I want to live near friends but St Augustine may be better for me as you describe the weather. I love to be outdoors all day whenever possible.
You are living in an area that is over populated therefore you are waiting too long for an appointment...I don't have to wait that long for an appointment in Sarasota.
Love your videos. Though I recently watched your 10 favorite places in Florida, and St Augustine sounds like a great place to live. But my brother lives in Santa Rosa beach in the panhandle. Any recommendations near that area? Thanks
Thanks a lot Louis! I did not include any cities from the panhandle in that vid, only because I have never actually been there, and the wanted the list to based solely on my real life experience. But once I make visit to the pan handle, I plan on doing an update video if I find some great spots!!
@@MichaelBordenaro thanks. I'm looking forward to your update on recommendations once you visit Santa Rosa beach. Though I have about 2 to 3 years before I take the plunge.
@@louisrgutierrez7787 Yes I wish I could be traveling all over FL right now. But the risk is still too great with the virus, so for now I am staying put. But eventually it will happen👌
@@MichaelBordenaro lol. I knew that would be the answer. So go around the person. Those folks who are driving 30 in a 50 mile zone are usually old people so you gotta understand. It's FL old people haven
@@noblegirl1991 Yeah its true, usually they are old people doing that. But it is also dangerous, especially here in Miami because then everyone gets impatient, and tries to pass and has to pull out in front of cars doing 50-70 and accidents happen that way
It was quite a bit cheaper actually. I was paying about $360 every six months for full coverage on my 97 Camaro Z 28. Then once I had to switch to Florida, it went up to almost 500 for the same insurance. Might not sound like a lot now but it definitely was a lot for me at the time.
Question: I hold an American citizenship but for many I years have only held a Canadian driver's licence. When I was young I held a Virginia licence but that lapsed decades ago. Is it a big pain to get a Florida driver's licence?
That is a tricky one and more a question for a lawyer than for me as a realtor. If you do have a permanent residence here in FL and you get pulled over with another state ID, the same thing could happen to you like it did with me having to go to court
I guess it depends on your skin type, and how much time you actually spend out in the sun tanning. I know it's made my tan more permanent but I still see white people who are super white too!
I have been watching a lot of videos on living in Florida especially from your channel, but I have noticed many other people that live in Miami say the crime and over crowding is one of the growing downfalls on living in the area. Since you have first hand experience would you agree with those opinions?
Thank you for watching, I appreciate it 😊 Miami is definitely getting crowded, but by no means as crowded as like NY or LA. The crime where I live in Miami Beach, is very low, and most of it happens in the south beach area when there are large events happening. But in general, this area is very safe, but in Miami, the further west you go, the more crime there seems to be. If that is a big concern for you moving here, then just make sure to do your research on the area, before coming here. Also, feel free to ask me, and I'll give you my opinion 😉
Also very true, crime is pretty much unavoidable in any major city. But the amount of crime and what type of crime is what I would pay attention too. And which areas have the most crime 👍
Good question Monika. I don't have a good answer for you, but I would maybe google things like U.S. companies that hire Canadians, or something along those lines.
All you'll need to do is take your valid drivers license to your local FL DMV and they will just charge you a fee, take your picture, and replace it with a FL one. Not test needed
Unfortunately no. I have never lived there, so I can't really say what it's like living there. And I have only passed through the area, never stayed for any significant amount of time. In the future hopefully I can cover it, but for now I am only covering places I have actually been to and have the experience to back it up 👍
Michael Bordenaro well that too, I’m planning on moving to Florida or California to become a Real Estate Agent, but I can’t decide which one is the best.
Well I think both states have their pros and cons for being a real estate agent. In California it’s much more difficult to get the license and more expensive than Florida. But before I started this RUclips channel, I was seriously considering getting my California real estate license and moving to San Francisco. Surprisingly, the competition isn’t as stiff as I thought it would be and houses there sell in the millions every single day so the commissions are huge
@@seanlugowski5732 yes good question also. I recently made a video all about working in real estate here which I will link for you right here: ruclips.net/video/L5yBs4pzXCA/видео.html If I were to start all over in Florida, I would get into real estate in one of the northern cities in Florida. Meeting somewhere in the northern half of the state. Because down in South Florida, there are just too many realtors and too much competition. So if you're just starting out you want to give yourself the best chance at success

Great videos Michael! I am just starting my research on where to possibly move in Florida. Living in Michigan currently and am ready for a change.
Thanks a lot Michael! I know that feeling of being ready for the change. Let me know where you decide to move to in Florida and why 👌

That’s awesome, that’s how it started for me too a strong desire to leave. Sounds like you’re on your way to make it happen👍
Same for me too but I’ve always wanted to try it!
@@joyhutson8488 Do you mean spending summers in California or breaking away from the family?
I'm sure you will figure out what the right choice will be😊
Michael Bordenaro what do you suggest?
I would say in the panhandle or southwest FL maybe Ft Meyers area, might be more your speed
I grew up in Clearwater. 6 months of heatwave hell and 6 months of rain 🌧️.

Thank you - thank you 🙏. Appreciate all your time and effort. It is very helpful 👍🏻👍🏻

How much cheaper is that Illinois insurance?
It was quite a bit cheaper actually. I was paying about $360 every six months for full coverage on my 97 Camaro Z 28. Then once I had to switch to Florida, it went up to almost 500 for the same insurance. Might not sound like a lot now but it definitely was a lot for me at the time.

If we are renting a home in Florida and in another state but only in Florida a few weeks at a time is it possible to keep current state I’d?

Thank you for watching, I appreciate it 😊 Miami is definitely getting crowded, but by no means as crowded as like NY or LA. What do you think about Real Estate opportunities here in Florida?
As far as investment I am guessing you mean?
Michael Bordenaro well that too, I’m planning on moving to Florida or California to become a Real Estate Agent, but I can’t decide which one is the best.
Well I think both states have their pros and cons for being a real estate agent. In California it’s much more difficult to get the license and more expensive than Florida. But before I started this RUclips channel, I was seriously considering getting my California real estate license and moving to San Francisco. Surprisingly, the competition isn’t as stiff as I thought it would be and houses there sell in the millions every single day so the commissions are huge
Michael Bordenaro yeah I thought the same thing. How about Florida? I know that you guys have expensive houses as well.
