  • The National Railway Museum located in York opened its doors in 1975 and is home to a collection of over 100 locomotives and nearly 300 other items of rolling stock. The museum is free to enter however does accept donations at various points around the site.
In this video I explore The National Railway Museum and discover the many different rooms and locomotives on display. The National Railway Museum was established on its present site, the former York North locomotive depot, in 1975, when it took over the former British Railways collection located in Clapham. Since opening next to the current York Railway Station the collection has continued to grow with new exhibitions and locomotives coming to the site on a regular bases.

When I visited England years ago I wanted to include a visit to the Museum. However, during our visit from Connecticut we did not have time for a day at the Museum. This was a great tour on RUclips. Thank you.

My son got to sit in and drive that miniature railway 47 a few years ago because he stood talking to the men who ran it. It was a real treat for him. He loved it.

I went there in 1999 as part of a day trip to York. I also remember visiting a model railway next to the station. I live in the US and I was amazed at how simple it was to get from my hotel in London to York all by rail. It isn't something that can be done in most parts of the US. Great video, brings back a lot of memories.

The loco in the North Shed is GNR "Henry Oakley", which is still at the museum but not on display sadly, and the North Staffordshire battery loco and Grand Junction Railway travelling post office at 27:24 were temporarily moved to Shildon, but will be returning after the renovations are finished.

Haven't been there for years since I was a child. Its got a lot bigger and so many new areas there and more trains ect. The Victorian era steam trains are just the British history itself. Do like they combine the modern and older trains to. Even got the bullet train to see wow. So many things to see and do.

I have done two small Vlogs on my channel for Chasewater. It is also from our homeland, Staffordshire.

When you visit the Netherlands later this year, are you going to visit the railway museum in Utrecht as well? I think you would really like it. It has some rides (like in a theme park) and of course trains you can look at and go inside of. And lots of information (I think all the information is available in English as well). It is a really cool museum!

I've just come back from a 2 week holiday in Florida. Since we went before and did most of the theme parks, we took it easier with us spending the first week in the hard rock hotel at universal Orlando and spent the second week outside of the parks. The weird thing is, I've been to Disney world, universal Orlando, seaworld, legoland Florida and Busch gardens but I've never been to Chessington, Thorpe park, legoland Windsor or Paulton's park.

Hi Shawn, cool history. I would like your opinion on how it is for you in viewing items... do you pace yourself to take in the history of each item then move on to next... do you stop and have a ponder on history/who was there, or some "old school" point like Alex noted on the hand made craftsmanship in the day(?) How best take in each item/pace yourself for exhibits and time sorta question. Thanks....!

You need to go to some preserved railways to see steam locomotives in action like the isle of wight steam railway there is ar the moment 4 steam locos that are steam able next year one loco returns to steam, there is a museum and a train story that has to steam locomotive in both waiting for overhaul one out for overhaul (just the Frames the boiler is out side) if there is only one train run the four wheels are in there and the historic goods set is there, class 05 diesel shunter is left in sid for safety for the loco, the state of what the coaches look like before being preserved. A walk in to C&W , shop and a falconry that you need to pay extra for but seeing the birds fly is free to see

I must bow my head in shame.....for as an American .... our rail network pales so greatly as compared to UKs.....
Such great old and new trains you guys got....American railway is junk......so embarrassing .....we have so very little quantity of movie scenes...with American trains...but Britain......so many movies with the great trains and stations of UK....Shylock Holmes movies...with Reginald Owen, and Basil Rathbone....seeing many great London trains and stations.....Greer Garson and Walter Pigeons...
Mrs.Minever......also Ronald Coleman Random Harvest...and so many more movies..with British rail....
Beatle's too!!!!.......also Thomas Tank engine....with sir toppem hats....and Ringo.....America should be so ashamed......
......Also as im from New York in USA....I would like to thank the people of the city of York in UK.....also the Duke of York.......for giving my city oart of its name.....there would be no 'New York'....unless first there was ' York'...
So thank you.....I can't imagine living in New Liverpool
    or New London...New Manchester....New Bristol..New Surrey.....New Kent......New York sounds best.....thank you people of York..... excellent/educational video Shawn

I'm from Ashford, Kent but I won't say what Road and house :)
I would recommend you as American looking around Ashford because it is the only international "town" in the UK, it's a very historic town too, there's an outlet that looks like a HUGE tent, we have the international station that has Eurostar, Southeastern high speed, Southeastern, southern rail UK, Freight trains, Even steam trains, we have little & often buses which is Kents most famous bus livery for modern liveries
I'll tell you all the popular bus liveries in kent:
      Stagecoach in East Kent
      Arriva North Kent
      Little & often
Celebrating 100 years of East Kent buses
      The wave buses
      Fast track
      Chalkwell Ashford ( now stagecoach/little & often)
      The breeze
And that is technically all popular Kent bus companies
Anyways back to Ashford, we have a cineworld cinema and a new one
Theres a bus station and there's a huge suburban area
By the way Ashford International railway station is a very good station to Trainspot at, there's examples on my channel
