Yeah, I was so confused when the second one started singing. At first, I thought it was going to be Jolene POV and thought it was an interesting twist and... Wait, is this ANOTHER man? How many relationship is Jolene threatening?
I'm always glad to not have genderswapped lyrics. It doesn't matter if you're gay, straight, or pan when you sing Jolene she stole your man and you're gonna sing that with your God damn chest
Best thing about Jolene is it always comes across as queer. If it's sung by a man, he's worried about losing his man. If it's sung by a woman, there's some real sapphic undercurrents between her and Jolene. And if it's sung by someone non-binary, well it's just completely queer at that point.
@@santagonewrong Absolutely. It's got some real queer energies to it. And I'm here for it. I blame, saying that jokingly, Dolly. Because she just puts her entire soul into singing about how beautiful Jolene is. And it's kind of amusing.
@@handlenot030 Huh? Not sure where you got that I hate women and/or lesbians. I am both, and I usually manage not to hate myself too too much. As for the "queer reaching", it literally is a song of her spending paragraphs describing how beautiful another woman is. I'm certainly not saying Dolly Parton is gay, but even she acknowledged that it's understandable why people heard it that way and thinks it's a "fun" read on the song.
It can effect the connotation of some songs in which it sounds way creepier. The original I love rock and roll sounds so much creeper than the cover. That being said not changing it still adds a story to it. I definitely like this one. It could be jilted lovers of the man/ men Jolene took or of multiple friends talking about their friend marrying Jolene and they are no longer able to see him. Words and culture are a wonder in this world.
I get what you mean, and of course you're right, but the funny thing is that genderswapping the lyrics would only make Jolene gay/bi, and the singer's girlfriend bisexual, so it's a win no matter what 😁
when i saw that thomas sanders was also singing in this i audibly gasped he has such a lovely voice and honestly, this kind of singing also really fits him!! ofcourse the other 2 lads did awesome aswell, always love the deep singing voice for country-ish songs
That was beautiful! I don't think I've ever heard Thomas before (very nice voice) but to hear this softer side of Caleb and Jon was so enjoyable. 👍 I'm not a huge country music fan but since finding the Caleb/Jon collaboration of "Country Roads" only recently I was kinda hoping to hear them do something more country style again as I thought their voices worked so well on it. This more gentle country style hit the spot. Great work, fellas ☺
All I can think about is that this girl walks into a ranch town full of bisexual men and flirts with them and they have a town meeting or a group meeting and they are just like “please leave the town Jolene you are messing up the whole towns relationships 😂 “ it’s a great cover though I love the way the vocals mix together and the instrumental is so nice with the vocals
A story about three best friends with their three lovely husbands...whom all seem to be attracted to a new girl in town by the name of *Jolene* The three friends take notice of this and do what they must to make sure this *Jolene* doesn't take away their mans.
Your voices meld together to splendidly, yet, they also stand out from one another so remarkably. It's beautiful, truly. There is absolutely no denying that, for it's simply mesmerizing. 💙💙
The story in my head now: Old west settlers. A working community- maybe farms, maybe the railways, maybe mining. Something happens, and it is all men. Not actually too uncommon. Well, this little town quietly went full Greek soldiers, and are just falling in love with each other in pairs and groups, all the while always talking like one day there will be “a real town” with wives and kids. The first woman comes out there (let’s guess her profession, shall we?) name Jolene. Cue absolute townwide gay panic. Is he going to leave me???? Is today the day? Am I supposed to be attracted to her? I am right? And no one is actually talking to each other. Just quietly suffering in their own heads and pretending everything is fine. How it ends depends on if you like romantic comedies or tragedies. Either way- it would be an interesting story!
OMG Caleb Hyles, Jonathan Young AND Thomas Sanders?? That's a musical match made in heaven!! I absolutely adore this song and your version has shot its way into my favourites!!
Well, you've done it again Caleb. Not only another incredible cover/collab, but you gave me another artist to dive into. Haven't listened to Thomas's work, but he's phenomenal!

Three of my favorite singers in one collab? Genuinely crying, this is so beautiful. Thank you and excuse me, I will now listen to this on repeat for days.
I can’t help but feel like Thomas was just barely restraining himself from going ham riffing, lol! (If you’ve listened to his work before, or watched his vines, you’d know he’s very very good at it)

@@fallenpoet6051 She was very calm and sweet. I remember when I had to get all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed at once, I was in terrible pain. Storm came into my room, hopped on my bed, and would stay there with me. Giving me kisses and helping me out. She wouldn't even come out if my mom called her.
@@Thunderfox32 She sounds like an incredible dog who cared a lot about you! I’m glad you had her for such a long time. May Storm rest in peace. I wish you all the best, stranger… grieving is hard.
Why did I suddenly think of Dutch, Arthur and John from RDR2 with this- Also I always thought to myself "Dolly honey, you deserve so much better if Jolene can steal your man so easy." every time I listen to this song.
Caleb!!! This is so amazing, as always, fantastic work!! A bop to listen to. I don’t know if you remember me, but you met me back in the Tennessee/Kentucky convention. I was the Hank you met first in the line after your concert with my friend in Deimos!! Thank you so much for continuing to do what you do!!
@ThomasSanders has such a spectacular voice, wish I could hear more And @JonathanYoung to hear you sing with out the metal(though still awesome) is truly splendid
I went full fangirl when Thomas began to sing. What can I say? He has a great voice. So do Jonathan and Caleb, but I don't get to hear Thomas Sanders in a lot of these collabs.
I swear, so many of your covers give me story ideas, it's ridiculous. Maybe it's because I've been writing stories about brothers, but this gives me the picture of a family of brothers, and one of their brothers is being haunted by this mysterious entity, this beautiful nightmare. One has seen her in the night, gorgeous yet horrifically powerful, and knows he cannot stop her. One hears him talking about her, literally in a fever, and see the horrible changes in him. One, who is probably the closest to him of all, seeks her out and tells her how much he needs his brother. Then, in the last thirty seconds or so, whatever happens happens. Whatever Jolene decides to do is done, and whatever the brothers have to do. If I had time, I'd totally make this into an animatic.
This cover is really interesting, especially because the lyrics weren't genderswapped. Keeping them as they are, and assuming a somewhat historic-ish setting due to the country sound, we get the story of a gay man who is afraid he'll lose the one partner that he can be honest with. In 20th century rural America a man like him has a very slim chance of finding another lover, while the (presumably) straight or bi Jolene can be (at least partially) open about herself and thus has much more options. It transforms the song from a ballad about jealousy and "only loving the one" to a lament for a tiny pocket of honesty and love in a world that forces you to lie about yourself. Of course, that's mostly subtext and projection, but it feels very powerful to me.
