Thank you so much for sharing this! My stove is broken and I can't get anyone out to fix it because.... Social distancing. Now I'm finding new ways to use my instant pot! So glad I came across your channel. :)
Glad my recipes are helping you, thanks for your feedback. Stay home and stay safe :)
The instapots are amazing.
I'd like to clarify how the Instant Pot works; primarily to clarify why 10 minutes of cooking time is enough and why this figure is confusing/misleading:
Note0: TLDR timeline break time of actual cooking time at the bottom.
Note1: The chicken was resting to room temperature during the 15-20 minute while it was marinating.
Note2: (Pressure + Temperature) reduces cooking time... keep this in mind as you read the following.
The instant pot can take anywhere between 5 - 20 minutes for pre-heating; depending on how much you have in the pot. This pre-heating process significantly raises the temperature and pressure inside the pot. To the point that you can hear liquid boiling inside; it is at this point that the timer for the 10 minutes actually starts (at preset PSI of internal pressure - depending on your setting). Hence the actual cooking time is longer than "10 minutes". The timer ensures the food is cooked for X number of minutes in ideal - peak temperature/pressure. In the case of this recipe; where the pressure is on high. Furthermore, she also let the instant pot naturally de-pressurize by letting it sit in the pot for an additional 15 minutes. The actual cooking time is approximately 25-35 minutes. I hope this clears up the information for those that are new to instant pot cooking... thanks for reading.
TLDR Timeline for cooking room temperature chicken drum sticks:
1) Instant Pot Pre-heating: 5-20 mins (depending how much you have in the pot) - this raises internal perssure/temps.
2) High Pressure Cooking: 10 minutes
3) Natural pressure release: 15 minutes
Actual Cooking time: approximately 25-35 minutes
Dude.. thats a great write up. I already knew this but when just starting out with the insta-pot not many places explain this, even on youtube.
Wow
You are correct.
I'm making this recipe again tonight for about the 5th time! So good! Thanks!
Most welcome, glad to know you enjoy this recipe :)
Thanks for this recipe! It was my 1st time using my Instant Pot (after getting it for Christmas a year and a half ago).
I was missing the coriander and the gran masala on the first try, but the chicken still turned out amazing. Now I have all of the ingredients, so I'll be making it again tonight.
The Instant Pot is a good alternative to using the oven for those of us in small apartments who want to avoid getting their home too hot.
Sounds great! Thanks for your feedback, glad you enjoyed.
Thanks. I'm new to cooking with my Instant Pot Pro Crisp. Loved this. Easiest Chicken recipe I've seen so far. Will be following you for more recipes. Have a wonderful weekend.😊
Thanks . very informative !
This has become a go to recipe for me! Husband loves it too!
That's great to know, glad you guys enjoy this :)
looks good
Outstanding recipe! I just cannot say enough about the amazing taste! I baked in the oven at 425F for 40 minutes. Your marinade is so delicious it worked!
Thank you so much for your great feedback, glad to know you enjoyed the drumsticks :)
I love my instant pot! Those look great, I will have to try!
Do let me know your feedback.
this is awesome! thank you! 😉
Glad you like it!
I was getting my 2qt pressure cooker set up to cook 2chicken legs from a recipe that I have but I was watching others just to get good tricks on how to make my recipes better. I immediately took out my chicken and put it on top of foil! I did cook my legs for 12 minutes because I like the meat a little softer. I used my own seasonings and your technique and it was wonderful! I definitely will try your seasoning next time! Thanks!
Thanks for your feedback, glad to know it turned out good 😊
@@thasneen No, THANK YOU! I love Indian food and I look forward to trying your recipes!
This looks really good!!
Thank you!
Wow! Made for dinner today. Outstanding flavor. Must try with other cuts of chicken. Great Recipe.
Glad you liked it, thanks for your feedback :)
You are amazing. What an Idea saves time...... Thank you dear
Do give it a try and let me know your feedback :)
I just love this recipe & how simple you made everything. Thanks again :)
My pleasure 😊
Thanks
I’m hungry 😋
Great video, especially the gravy
Glad you liked this recipe, thank you :)
Thanks for another great recipe!
My pleasure 😊
This sounds soooo good & I have everything but the green onions. However, I have about 3 pounds of legs thawing so I will be making. I have never used this combo of spices and look very forward to it. Thank you for sharing with us & I can’t wait to share how mine turns out.
Hope you enjoy it, do let me know how it turned out.
Got it for a friend and they loved how tender the meat comes out.
Glad to know.
Tried it tonight and loved it 😊
Thanks for letting me know 😊
I cooked drumsticks tonight. It was the first time I cooked drumsticks. Though I didn't use the same marinade mine didn't come out crispy like hers. They were good but was wanting them to be crispy
just followed your steps, chicken is in the pot now and lookin forward to eating them. thank you for the clear instructions
Hope you enjoyed the drumsticks, do let me know :)
Wow that was easy
Indeed, easy & delicious :)
nice
Thank you for Amazing recipe
Most welcome 😊
thank you.
10min wasnt long enough
i'M COOKING IT NOW AND i'LL PROBABLY BROIL FOR A FEW MINUTES WHEN ITS DONE.iT ALREADY SMELLS GREAT! 😁
Hope you enjoyed the drumsticks :)
I am going to try this recipe tomorrow, as it will be my first time using the pressure cooker instant pot
Hope you will enjoy, please ensure the pressure is at high and use defrosted chicken drumsticks. For me, chicken was cooked well in just 10 mins pressure cooking. A few found it to be undercooked (not sure if they added frozen drumsticks directly to the IP), if so please pressure cook for another 5 more minutes. Do let me know your feedback :)
I used fresh chicken drumsticks, I sautéed them for about 6 minutes, then *10 minutes pressure cooker
Same here
I followed the recipe as you said for 10 mins, and cooked less drumsticks than what you had, and after 10 minutes they were not completely cooked. Yours look delicious.
Did you use well thawed drumsticks? I find that for frozen drumsticks will require 5 to 10 minutes additional pressure cooking time. I’ve tried this recipe a few times, and the well defrosted drumsticks are perfectly cooked in 10 mins press cooking.
Mine too. I followed instructions to the T and it’s wasn’t cook. Chicken completely thawed. I’m adding 5 more minutes and hopefully this helps.
I followed the recipe and after 10 minutes in my instant pot AND additional cooking time under the broiler, they still were not completely cooked. Next time I will try 15 minutes in the instant pot. The flavor was great and the gravy was very good! I will be trying this one again.
In the Instant pot, I find that defrosted bone in chicken pieces & drumsticks are cooked well in just 10 mins of high pressure cooking. I hope you have defrosted the chicken before cooking & pressure at high. For sure, 15 mins should definitely work. Thanks for your feedback.
I cooked it for over 20 min & natural-released. The pieces on the bottom were still clearly raw. Only 5 pieces on the top looked cooked enough for me to put in the oven. =(
I pressure cooked a whole chicken the other day for 20 min with quick press release and it was falling apart. I'm perplexed drumsticks are taking more than 20 min, is it the kind of chicken that's been used or is the IP not heating up? In my IP, drumsticks are cooked through in 10 min.
@@thasneen
I think it depends on how thick they are. I used a knife and placed cuts in mine.
I have found that steamed chicken pieces take longer that those submerged in liquid. I know the "experts" say no difference on trivet or without. I disagree.
Upload more and easiest recipes 😋
3rd attempt. I love ur recipe. I did like 6 drumsticks and a whole chicken. I want the meat to fall off the bone so I'm gonna over cook ot a lil bit. I'm gonna thicken the sauce with a roux and serve over rice maybe with some flat bread. Smells great though and I love your recipe already!
Rh8s tastes amazing honestly great recipe
Glad to know you enjoyed this recipe, thanks for letting me know :)
10 min a little pink near the bone. I split the difference given in the Instant Pot manual which calls for 10-15 minutes for bone in chicken part or, 12 minutes. Came out fine.
I love moist
I made it for dinner and it tasted delicious! Absolutely love your recipes!!! However, I added ginger garlic paste in the marination process cuz I’ve been to told to always add it to meat dishes. I am curious why didn’t you add ginger and garlic?
Adding ginger-garlic to meat dishes is not mandatory, it's good to add if you prefer. While making curries I do add ginger-garlic paste :)
Thank you for sharing 👍🙏 May I ask why you are placing the drumsticks on the aluminum foil (but on the serving plate)while making the sauce!!
Most welcome, if you are referring to drumsticks placed on the aluminum foil towards the end: i thought of broiling them after pressure cooking, even without broiling drumsticks tasted delish hence skipped the broil step 😀
Opening the oven and moving out stufds and putting the chicken in has been a hassle for me.. Will definitely try this recipe out.. Thank you for this post ..
These chicken drumsticks have turned out awesome, do try it out and let me know if you liked it.
Drumsticks often go on sale $.99 or less per pound so this is an economical source of protein for the family. I will try this recipe but add melted butter to the cooked chicken and broil for a finished texture and appearance. I wonder how traditional gravy using butter and flour with the broth would taste?
You can totally add butter & flour to the broth, would taste delish. Also, broiling will make the drumsticks even more delicious.Let me know your feedback :)
Just add on.
Since its pressure cooked it will be moist. If you want it crispy on the outside, you could broil for a few minutes in the oven.
That's correct.
The pressure cooker guarantees fully cooked Moist chicken.
Then a quick zap under a grill / broiler to crisp up
or even a dust in flour/cornstarch and a quick fry in Hot oil
Absolutely!
@@thasneen Try with a dust of szechuan pepper
I have non stick pan in crock pot express do I still need to put the chicken in foil. Scared of scratchin the not stick surface
If it's non stick pan, foil is not required. With the foil, you will be able to collect the liquid that oozes out of the chicken for making the gravy.
First able, thank you for taking the time to upload this recipe. The only problem that I had was that even after adding 5 more minutes than you on my pressure cooker for a total cooking time of 15 minutes my chicken drumsticks came out extremely rare. I’d say that 20-25 minutes of cooking time is more appropriate.
Did you use fully thawed drumsticks & was the pressure at high? (note: frozen chicken will take more time to cook- 20 mins) I've used fully thawed drumsticks, 10 mins at high pressure it was cooked well- it wasn't fall apart though. Usually, 15 mins of pressure cooking at high pressure I find the meat to be falling apart- even with whole chicken. For chicken drumsticks, 25 mins seems too high. I would say it must be the kind of chicken you have used, might have required more cooking time. Thanks for your feedback though :)
After you placed the chicken drumsticks on 5he foil lined baking sheet did you broil or bake them?
After pressure cooking I didn’t bake or broil, it turned out really good. If you like browned drumsticks, you can broil at high for 2 minutes.
Hi Thas, if I want to make drumsticks and thighs together, would I still go with the 10 minute cook time? Thank you, I know I will enjoy this recipe:)
Even for thighs 10 minutes of pressure cooking, hope you’ll enjoy this recipe 😊
@@thasneen thanks so much for the prompt reply:)
Thank you for the recipe. Are you using kashmiri red chili powder or the Mexican/American equivalent?
Indian Kashmiri chili powder, it’s mild with vibrant red color. If you want the chicken to be spicy regular hot chili powder can be added. Glad you liked this recipe :)
@@thasneen Thank you for the quick reply. I am making it this evening. I'll post about how it turns out. The marinade smells amazing!
I used yogurt marination.. I didn't get like that dry charred grilled effect.. I did tawa fry again.. Does it came same way without yoghurt.. Mine is duo model
Since you have added yogurt it wouldn't have the grilled effect while pressure cooking in the Instant Pot, moisture in the yogurt will prevent the chicken from turning brown. After pressure cooking, has to be either air fried or broiled in the oven for that perfect grilled effect. Hope this helps.
Nice presentation, you're very attractive too :)
Thank you! 😃
I concur
I tried this recipe tonight, but my chicken legs looks too wet, white, not a little dryer like yours (which is what I was going for). I also cooked them 30 minutes the first time, and they still didn’t look right. I have now put them on 15 more minutes. By now they would’ve cooked perfectly in the oven.
In the Instant Pot at high pressure, chicken legs will be fully cooked in just 10 minutes. I’ve been making this quite often and I’ve never cooked chicken for more than 15 minutes in IP. 30 minutes will result in totally mashed up chicken. I’m surprised to learn it took 45 minutes to pressure cook the chicken in IP. Did you cook at high pressure using thawed chicken? Frozen chicken might take 20 minutes, but not 45 mins. Trying to understand what went wrong, is it taking too long when you cook other dishes too? If so, i assume something is wrong with IP heating & pressure setting. If you are finding this an issue, please contact IP customer support and they will ship a new one to you. Hope this helps, thanks for letting me know :)
Cooking with Thas it’s the strangest thing. Today I put them on the slow cook function for 4 hours, and those drumsticks are still high g the bone! Unbelievable. My hubster is half Fijian, and he said his family has had rooster before and it was an all day affair to cook it, so he suspects these big drumsticks to be rooster meat and not hen meat. I’ve cooked them now 4 different ways, and they still won’t fall off the bone. I never ate rooster meat, so I believe him. I’m frustrated nonetheless. Thank you for responding.
Interesting, this had me read more about cooking rooster. Wow, it does take many hours to cook it. Learned something new 😊 and thanks for sharing your experience. Hope the rooster meat tastes delicious after all the hard work. Next time, do try with hen drumsticks and hope you will enjoy this recipe.
Maybe it's free range chicken. Those are tough
Cooking with Thas I had such a hard time with those rooster drumsticks! It’s comical now to think back about it. I definitely learned something new. I bought them at a Mexican Meat Market and thought “wow, look at those big meaty drumsticks, I bet they’ll be delicious!” How wrong I was!! lol!! I never knew the difference between hen & rooster meat. So now I refer to those rooster drumsticks as “the angry rooster meat!” HAHAHAHA! I’m literally so traumatized by that angry rooster, that I’m sticking to chicken breasts for now, lol. This post had me laughing so much recalling those darn drumsticks, because it was such a laborious chore to get that meat to cook! I’m a pretty great cook usually, and I felt like an amateur back in a high school cooking class, but even then, I was the best cook in the class because my Momma taught me to cook since I was very young. I literally tried every cooking method on earth to get that angry rooster meat to cook, and it still didn’t taste all that great, lol. Note: never ever ever buy big fat drumsticks, they’re probably angry rooster legs!! 🤣😂🤣🤣. I’ll have to try your recipe when I’m done with “rooster drumstick trauma therapy!” lol, just kidding. I’ll try your recipe when I get some regular Foster Farms chicken drumsticks, because your recipe looks amazing! Then I’ll update you on my experience. Thank you so much for sticking with me to help figure out a solution, you are truly awesome. It’s funny that I taught you something through my experience too, 😁😆. Maybe others might learn something by reading these comments as well. I’m learning that City and island cooking are different in many ways. Keep your recipes coming. 💐
would be much much better in air fryer
I agree, this video was taken before I owned an air fryer; tasted delish though.
I use this but the chicken still raw! What did i do wrong
I like this recipe for the drumettes ..does this work for chicken thighs...I'd imagine so, right?
It will work for Bone in chicken thighs.
@@thasneen it worked well! What I've been doing is I pressure cook for 5 mins in just water without spice... This way I can make fresh broth for my dog. Then I add all the spices (paprika, korma, tumeric, etc) and some beans to a bowl with the chicken and pressure cook again. Seems to be working.
I will try this on Monday when my wife is gone LOL thank you I will cock this for my family and it will be my lunch. I are house we help with cooking
Today I made your dish with chicken leg quarters in instant pot but with gravy but my question is what sides do you make with this dish?
I have it with rice pilaf, mashed potatoes & roasted veggies, perfect lunch or dinner :)
@@thasneen Thank you. My kids loved your recipe.
can I lightly fry my chicken for color then put it in the instant pot?
I would say you can do that after pressure cooking the chicken in the Instant Pot, you can slightly fry or even broil in the oven-will turn crispy & brown.
@@thasneen what preheat temp we shud use if we do broil only after instant pot cooking
instead of foil can we use steel container
For sure, you can use steel container that fits the pot.
10 mins was not enough, the chicken was undercooked. 15 mins was ok for me
If using frozen chicken that's not defrosted will take more time 15 to 20 minutes.
10 minutes was no where near enough time, I added 5 more, still not done. The flavors were good
I tried this in a different electric pressure cooker and it came out tasteless and dry :(.
Sorry to hear that, pressure cooking time will vary in other brands. Not sure about the tasteless part, with the spices I've added should taste flavourful.
I just wonder how much aluminum is being leached into the gravy and chicken when you place foil in the instant pot this way.
I was thinking the same thing. Aluminum should not touch the food.
@@nessamarie6408 I wonder if parchment paper would do in stead of aluminum in the instant pot
really, twelve minutes in the pressure cook and then let it come to rest? really?
James E Carson 10 minutes pressure cooking followed by natural pressure release.
Chicken wasn’t done. Needs longer than 10 minutes.
Did you use thawed chicken legs and at high pressure? If using frozen legs without thawing more time is required. However, for thawed legs 10 minutes pressure cooking was sufficient as seen in the video. It was cooked well for me. Also, pressure should be high. Low pressure, more time is required.
Definitely needs longer than 10 minutes
You are beautiful !!!
The aluminum paper I don’t think is a good idea
Very dissatisfied with your recipe. I followed everything exactly and the drumsticks weren't fully cooked. They were raw in some parts. Instead of having dinner at a decent time I had to add more cooking time. It came from the IP nothing like your final result. Surely you put your chicken under the broiler...
Sorry to hear it didn't turn out well for you. I've made this a few times and always turned out great, 10 minutes of cooking at high pressure will cook the drumsticks really well as you can see in the video and I didn't broil the chicken. Did you use frozen drumsticks and was the pressure set to high? Frozen drumsticks without thawing will require more cooking time.
@@thasneen drumsticks were at room temperature and IP was set at high pressure.
Its probably due to stacking.
Little too lengthy video
This recipe is NOT that great. Made this yesterday, and the chicken was okay and overpowered w/ spices.
It depends what flavors you like to taste. This is definitely Indian food mate.
Indian spices are always flavourful. If u still like Indian but milder, definitely you have to reduced the spices to negligible amount. Just add basics like salt n pepper n add yogurt n herbs🙂
Otherwise leave out all the Indian spices and use basic ingredients.🙂
It's *nothing* compared to an average indian recipe.
Tin foil !! I’m outta here
An indian cook making drumsticks no Indian would touch .. looks bland.. will taste the same...1 TSP paprika??lol . This is for a western palate
Let the western palate enjoy this. Don’t just generalize all Indians love everything spicy & loaded with masalas.
