    When the Y2K bug didn’t trigger the apocalypse at the end of the 20th Century, the world quickly moved on from the prospect of a computer glitch that could destroy modern society. Little did we know that a poorly-coded "Love Letter" virus would soon appear in email inboxes around the globe and cause BILLIONS of dollars in damage. So where did this virus come from? Who was behind it all?

    Im a Filipino and I remember this all too well. I was just about to graduate from high school and there are reps from colleges going to our school to entice students. The reps from the AMA where Onel studied are so zealous and proud that he studied at their alma mater. They are even using his story to lure us into enrolling, lol.

    I will say the Y2K scare was absolutely a real thing. But IT companies basically wrote new programming in order to let it switch to 2000 instead of 1900. Which would have crashed everything. My dad who owns a computer company was gone all of New Year’s Eve helping write software. So that it didn’t happen.
    So I can only assume other companies were doing the same

      It could have been a big problem... but everyone knew that, and worked on fixing it before it became a problem. I still see some people with the ridiculous take that the money spent to prevent the issue was a waste... to me that's like saying fire insurance is a waste of money because your house never caught on fire. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

      We'll see what happens in 2038 when unix timestamps (used very widely in software) overflow into negative values in all apps compiled in 32-bit mode. Which I assume a lot of government/bank/etc computers still run. It's equally as bad as Y2K, probably worse.

    It's fair enough to think he didn't expect his virus to go global but if it was a prank or a harmless proof of his skills, he wouldn't have needed to delete people's files on their computers; that was just spiteful.

    A classic example of what happens when great ambition gets left unchecked. Too bad he didn’t listen to his professor, but at least he’s learned his lesson. Shame he couldn’t go work for anti-virus software companies. His talents would have been welcomed had he channeled his skills ethically early on.

      Honestly I think he had potential but wasn't actually very talented, he just happened to be passionate about computing at a time when tech literacy was low. As was said in the video, the virus was cobbled together from other bits of malware and made no real effort to hide itself. Fortunately it was easy to stop because on a technical level it wasn't anything special, it just happened to spread quickly because of a clever bit of social engineering.

    It’s like modern Frankenstein. He created a creature, almost immediately regretted it, and then tried to run from it as it wrecked havoc. That said, I genuinely believe he didn’t (or couldn’t?) predict the magnitude of the damage his worm would do. Big lesson to learn, and I think he faced enough consequences. If it hadn’t been him, it would have been someone else who made a massive worm and triggered the creation of new laws and cybersecurity practises. Jail time would have done nothing but drain taxpayer money, idk why people think he should’ve done time.

    I really wish he didn't corrupt the files or steal passwords, just infected the PCs and did something mildly annoying, like adding a popup that you have to close every couple minutes. He'd be a legend. Then again some copycats would change it to go for maximum damage anyway.

    • @keybyss98
      @keybyss98 9 месяцев назад +2

      So, by the mid 90’s, a lot of important shit (banks, power grids, airlines, the military and its weaponry, NASA, etc,.) was already being run through computers.
      However, there was a weird algorithmic issue that computers would do once the years went from 1999 to 2000, sometimes just going back to 1900 while other times doing a bit more. It was something that was brought up back in the 70’s-80’s, but would especially be a big deal once the year 2000 got closer and closer.
      The fear was that it would be significant enough to crash and harm many computer systems, potentially ending the world as we knew it. Lots of doomsday prophets and “Y2K Protection” services (legit or not) popped up, as well as efforts to try and fix it as soon as possible. It didn’t help that many people were jumping into home computing faster and faster by the late 90’s.
      Fortunately, once the clock turned, the world went on. Some issues here and there (like simple 1900 date changes in schools that were easy to fix) popped up, but nothing serious.

      I'm old. 💀
      There was a bug in computer software that made them not handle the transition to the year 2000 properly. So, everything from personal computers to nuclear power plants had to crunch to fix this, otherwise everything would not work. People were full on panicked and the media pushed this hard.
