- A scenario representative of the Eastern Front during World War 2 was acted out in the skies above Duxford, during the Imperial War Museum's Battle of Britain Airshow 2017.
Here we see the Aircraft Restoration Company's Hispano HA-1112 M1L Buchon, G-BWUE, taking the part of a Luftwaffe Messerschmitt Bf109 ( the Buchon is a Spanish license built Merlin engined variant of the Bf109), 'beating up' and 'strafing' the imaginary Soviet airfield accompanied by suitably loud pyrotechnics.
The 'defending' aircraft are a pair of 1994 Russian built Yakovlev YAK 3 fighters - YAK 3M 'White 100', G-CGXG (formerly D-FJAK) flown by owner, Will Greenwood, and Yak 3UA, G-OLEG (formerly D-FLAK) flown by Richard Grace.

The Yak is one of those rare aircraft that look better on the ground than it does in profile wheels up. It has a very nice 'seat' on the ground. Its inward folding undercarriage gives it a huge advantage over the Spitfire and Bf 109, and its prop is not so big that its undercarriage has to be overly long like a Bearcat or FW190; very advantageous on rough strips from which it flew in action. Side on the fuselage is very deep and 'boxy', but somehow it gets away with it - a very elegant thing in the air.

Not really fair, because 109's model is not specified and technically he wrote "Messerschmitt", so it should include every Me. plane even 262s, but that's what you tried to disapprove.

The Yak-3 had greater speed, maneuverability and rate of climb than the Bf 109G and FW 190. German fighter aircraft were inferior to the Yak-3 in everything except weapons

The appearance of Bf-109 in the video made me scratch my head. Its nose does not look like Bf-109 at all. I would say it resembles more that of P-40 Warhawk. I looked in the video description and, indeed, the engine on this Bf-109 is the British Rolls Royce Merlin 500-45, which produces merely 1,515 hp. In comparison, late G series had MW-50 water injection boost and high-performance superchargers, boosting engine output to 1,775-1,973 hp. K series, introduced in late 1944, was powered by the DB 605D engine with 1,973 hp.
Give or take, the shown Bf-109 may be expected to display characteristics of early G series produced before 1944. Yak-3 was introduced in the second part of 1944, when early G series were already disappearing from the front line service.

The version of BF109 shown in the video was produced after the war by Spain, therefore it do possess a Rolls-Royce engine

There was a yak 3 at an air show in Frederick Maryland for a couple of years. A fast hotrod , plenty of power and speed. Wow

The YAK3 was the tightest turning and best low altitude performing aircraft of WW2.
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 D-9 or Focke-Wulf Ta 152 was the tightest turning and best low altitude performing aircraft of WW2.
@@mariannepompa4152 no the TA 152 is a high altitude performing aircraft. The 190 A8 comes very close but will not outrun the YAK 3.

Yakovlev was amazing man with hard and interesting life. I recommended her book with atmospheric story of his work and life. Actually he have met Messershmitt and other German constructors during his travel to Germany in 1939 - 1940 year.

Яков подлинных в лётном состоянии не найти! Просто конструкция не позволит (смешанная - металл и дерево). Сейчас производят реплики - почти полные копии с моторами Аллисон. Производят для музеев и коллекционеров. Вот они и летают

All 43 Yak3s from NN squadron was sent same year after WW2 was over to the France on Stalins orders. They were his gift to the brave french pilots who fight side by side with soviets against Germans.

Yakovlev 3UA G-OLEG suffered engine failure immediately after landing at Teesside Airport 8/6/24. No injuries but airport was shut for 40 minutes until it was towed from runway.

These Allison-powered Yaks seem to be great performers. I have seen a couple in person, and they really bring it on. Sure don't get the impression the Allison V-1710 was an "inferior" powerplant when watching these aircraft perform. Sound great, too.
Indeed, the bad rap from Allison was due to CRAP British fuel mixed wrong with too much lead! The Allison is a smarter engine.. they literally have way less than HALF the parts as the Rolls Royce Merlin and are thus 2x faster to overhaul and cheaper not too mention they were smart enough to have interchange parts with many other Allison variants too! I would take a Allison over a Merlin ANY DAY!! Merlins are sexy too though, but give me my Allison! :o)
@ J Freid Yeah right put that Allison in a Mustang and what do you have a plane you couldn’t even give away. Look at all the racers they all fly Merlin’s as they easily make more power and are a better engine. What Allison’s are is cheap and available, and a modernised Allison is a great and safe motor, I would put one in a plane over a Merlin on that and because they are affordable. A better motor No!!!!

Это правило Покрышкина. А так ведомый при таких обстаятельствах, когда противник ОДИН только зря слоняется за ведущим. Это не я такой умный. Тактика ТАКОГО боя расписана на чертежах Покрышкина в его альбоме по тактике!
Верно. Лет 15 назад читал книгу какого-то немецкого аса, у него немного более 200 побед, но, к сожалению ни названия ни автора не помню, хотя пытался найти и перечитать. Ну так вот он там описывал поединок своей пары с парой советского аса. Они друг с другом дуэлились, а оба ведомых кружили выше их схватки не ввязываясь в бой друг с другом, ожидая момента, когда (если) понадобится помощь ведущему. Бой закончился ничем. Ни кто никого не сбил, заканчивалось топливо - вышли из боя и по домам.
Так а кто победил то? Я что- то ни хрена не понял?...

I really admired about those WW2 Russian built combat aircraft like the Yakovlev Yak-3. For how they become so valuable in order to win the war on the Eastern Front, a story that has often to be tell, unlike those stories in the other Front, that has always told and retold to the whole world. But even so, it is a very wonderful video, not only with Yak aircraft but even the Spanish re-produced Bf-109 (Buchon) splendid.
Thankyou. You are so right about the untold stories of the Russian front, or what the Russians would call 'The Great Patriotic War'. It's a very much neglected area of WW2 history and also a very interesting one.

That's why the title's in inverted commas with (Buchon) in brackets and the aircraft has a Merlin engine rather than a DB601 - but it's better than a Cessna!

The Yak shows it main advantage at low altitude.
Can easily out turn the BF109.
HP is not everything. Ideal for how Russia had to fight. A long way from the Factories that built them and from rough strips near the Front line. Keep it simple.

There are so many different opinions about what plane was better, why don't we just relax and enjoy these 2 beautiful planes. Every plane had its strengths and weaknesses. And there were a lot of 109s killing ALOT of yak 3s, but also a lot of yak 3s killed a lot of 109s. I think it was an exiting battle between these two.

Чем больше люди говорят, узнают, ценят и признают свое общее прошлое, тем больше «властям» придется уважать это и обращать внимание. Я вижу в Интернете множество ссылок на россиян, которые записывают празднование и обсуждают свою историю так же, как это делают в Великобритании и других странах.Русский народ должен гордиться своей историей так же, как другие гордятся своей.

В России дофига музеев техники второй мировой. Просто выставочными полётами в Союзе никто не занимался. А сейчас найти годный к восстановлению самолёт не так просто. А тусовка реконструкторов сражений у нас одна из самых больших в мире. ХВАТИТ УЖЕ НЫТЬ!!!!!

Мне кажется, дело тут не в "развалили". В отношении самолётов так было всегда, исторически. Ведь всё, что связано с воздухом, от техники и правил до инфраструктуры, осталось от СССР. А что, в те времена частник мог иметь свой собственный самолёт? Да ни за что на свете! Всё государственное, строго централизованное. (Автомобили, и то сначала были у единиц, а потом -- до развала Союза -- у очень небольшого процента населения). А как у нас всегда поступали при смене устаревших самолётов на новые? Слом, свалка, переработка. Может, парочка в музеях каких-нибудь зависнет, под открытым небом, смотреть без слёз невозможно. Марки ещё. Мемуары. Кинохроника.
За бугром всё было с самого начала не так. Для обеспеченного человека купить самолёт -- это как купить дорогой автомобиль. И в двадцатых, и в тридцатых, и в пятидесятых, всегда. Существует (и всегда существовал) рынок самолётов б/у. И ВВС запросто продавало излишки техники народу (те же самые Мустанги в начале реактивной эры, рассказывают, отдавали за шапку сухарей). А в частных руках техника хранится и эксплуатируется намного, намного дольше, чем в государственных. (На эту тему стоит почитать Ричарда Баха: "Биплан", "Дар тому, кто рождён летать" и др.)
Вот и получается, что из 22000 выпущенных Спитфайров сегодня уцелело 240, из них 60 летающих, тогда как из 36000 Ил-2 на сегодня остался с десяток памятников и музейных экспонатов, а лётных экземпляров -- всего два (один восстановлен в 2011г. и уехал в США, другой -- в 2017, остался на родине). К слову, примечательно, что все летающие И-16 тоже сегодня обитают по ту сторону океана, и попали они туда совсем не из СССР, а вовсе из Испании -- трофеи франкистов. На счастье ишаководов, двигатель к ним подходит от АН-2.
Зависал как-то на форуме малой авиации, в разделе, где народ строит собственные самолёты и подлётывает на них, кто официально, а кто и на свой страх и риск. Так вот, регулярно народ выкупает у копателей останки машин. Один чувак насобирал аж с десяток покорёженных мессеров. А как восстанавливать? Ни специализированных мастерских, ни нормальных заводских чертежей. Собирались как-то скинуться и купить комплект конструкторской документации на По-2 у какого-то местечкового авиаремонтного завода, который как раз закрывался, но в годы войны чинил эти "уточки", и в архивах всё сохранилось. Так администрация запросила несколько лямов. Платите, мол, а не заплатите -- всё в печку пойдёт, нам пофиг. Так и не срослось.

Я один заметил что это не мессер а P-40E, поскольку под винтом слишком большой радиатор, и колпак винта слишком большой
У яка вроде тоже элиссон стоит, а не родное двигло. Нет сейчас движков родных ни на тот ни на другой истребитель, вкорячивают максимально совместимые агрегаты.
Именно! Это новоделы! У т. н. "Bf - 109 " нет на стабилизаторах раскосов жёсткости , на на т. н. Як - 3 кабина слишком длинная. Как у 9-ки..

I think that's a license built Spanish 109 with the Merlin engine. Yak -3s are cool stuff and bad news for the 109s. And why do they put music to a great airshow?
I'm sure any actual WWII veteran would tell me I'm an arse but I've wished for the longest time to be able to go back in time and be apart of it.

Was it original WWII yak-3 or built long after war replica with different engine and avionics?
New build Yaks manufactured by the same company who made the originals from the same original drawings but with upgraded avionics etc and utilising American Allison engines.

Focke-Wulf Ta 152 comparison Yak 3 Which one is better. I think Focke-Wulf Ta 152 D or H
The FW TA-152 was a much later aircraft than the basic Yak 3 and was primarily designed as a high altitude fighter. It was superior to the basic Yak 3 in just about every respect but later high altitude versions of the Yak 3 were comparable in performance but suffered from engine overheating issues. That said, the TA152 was never produced in enough numbers to make any difference to the overall outcome of WW2, so comparisons with the earlier Yak 3 are somewhat theoretical.

Yes, the '109' was made by Hispano who were later taken over by CASA, but the engine in the Buchon is a British Rolls Royce Merlin. The engine in the Yakovlev is an American Allison V1710-111.

Then “Государственный гимн СССР” ( The Unite of unbreakable free republics), the music of Soviet anthem uses for modern Russian national anthem. But! Never! Literally never, “священная война” used as Russian national anthem. So, as has being sad - you totally misunderstand history of your own country.

If that's what they had available when restoring the airplane, then that's what they used. I have a hankering that DB-600 series engines from Germany are hard to come by these days. There are still quite a few serviceable Merlins kicking around though, so why not--if it works, it works. Not a 'true' original though.

In dogfight - no. G serie and K-4 was too heavy to beat nimble Yak-3. E serie or F serie can have some chances. Yak was very, very light aircraft, under 3 metric tons of max takeoff mass.
@@PyromaN93 A K-4 might be a little heavier, but it was much faster than a Yak-3. So an experienced pilot in a K-4 could compete with a Yak-3 given the right circustances.
@@billschomburg6853 K-4 is able to perform only one tactic - hit and run, situation like this was in Spain, where Bf-109B was fought vs I-16. And it faster only in high altitudes, below 4000m Yak is faster in horisontal flight, Bf have advantage only in diving speed.
В учебных боях (у земли, в равных начальных условиях по скорости) як3 вероятнее всего вообще непобедим ни одним поршевым истребителем. В реальных боях естественно нет, но все равно 1 из сильнейших.

Да, Buchons должны были быть оснащены двигателями Rolls Royce Merlin от испанцев, так как Германия не смогла поставить оригинальный Daimler Benz 60. Яки были оснащены двигателями Allison V1710, потому что на момент их создания климов не было.

Why does that bf109s nose look like a p40?
It's a Spanish licence built version of the Bf109 officially designated 'Hispano aviation HA1112M1L Buchon'. The Germans failed to supply the necessary Daimler Benz engines to Spain, so they had to use alternatives. They ended up using Rolls Royce Merlins. This meant that the nose cowlings of the aircraft had to be a different shape, which is what you see here.

The criticisms about the choice of engines is unwarranted. If you look at engine choice for the Buchon , those original Czechoslovakian engines dried up very quickly., so the RR engine was an obvious choice post war . The Yak 3 probably went the same way as jet engine development post war determined their fate. You know the Lend Lease P40E in Russia wore out their Allison engines and had no spares, so the Russians even fitted a few P40 with the Klimov engine . Further, even the Hawker Sea Fury has been re engineered with US motors due to the shortage of replacement Centaurus engines. As for me it is nice to see an original air frame and engine but the war has been over for more than 70 years. At the end of the day it really doesn't matter what powers them as when you see them flying they aren't in combat mode, peak max HP is not an issue..... its all good.

Both aircraft were a batch of new build airframes made in the 1990s. As such the original Klimov V12 was no longer available/produced so instead they are powered by Allison engines.
Original, Russian-built Klimov V12 engines from WW2 are probably very, very rare. Since they're historical artifacts, it's not a great idea to fly around all the time with them.
@@devilsoffspring5519 Yes the Klimov engines, are extremly rare, none aircrafts still fly with a Klimov, and only 1 with the ancestor from the klimov: the Hispano Suiza y12...Only american engines are relative awailable because no destruction in the USA, and the USA was the only country who increase he's fortune during ww2 all, other was completly ruined and so did recycle all military materials= in France today zero airworty ww2 fighter did survive, the only MS406 who fly under french colors is in reality a swiss license built D3801, and Dewoitine D520 (similar to a Spitfire mk1) only 2 survive in museum but never fly again, zero Bloch 152 did survive, etc...
the YAK's look like beautiful birds from down below, the 109 looks like a machine, not that that's a bad thing just an observation.

Concerning these Allison powered Yaks, they were not an inferior quality engine,it was a rugged,simple ground boost engine that produced whatever power the engineers set it up for. The P38 used that engine and for altitude performance turbo chargers were installed with great success. The original Prototype P39 Air Cobra was turbo charged and used as a high performance light wt intercepter topping out at 390 mph... but politicians changed design specs , removed the turbo charger!installed heavy cannon, armor plate,self sealing fuel tanks,empty weight grew by 2000 # and turned the intercepter into a slug bug, ground attack plane... at least it was better than the Sturmovich (sp.)...!!!
Unlike the americans, soviet pilots really enjoyed their lend-lease P39s and scored many kills with them, one of the top aces of the war with over 60 kills, Alexander Pokryshin, flew a P39. It was mainly because the lack of turbocharger made the P39 a "slug bug" at high altitudes, but at lowe altitudes, where most of the combat in the eastern front happened and where soviet pilots were used to fighting, it performed very well!

Another donut peddling the myth that the P39 was used as a ground attack plane... In Russia it was used as a low altitude interceptor with great success.
Jack Fuller Where did I say it was used as a ground attacker? It's powerful 37mm cannon made it so it could be used in anti-shipping attacks and was also useful for targeting lightly armoured vehicles. But it's main role was definitely as a quick response fighter.
