    The difference was really clear in attack. Wales are fine with a phase 1/set piece possession, but as soon as we leave the playbook, we look lost. Ireland play to patterns drilled into them from schoolboy level. So they know "instinctively' how to make sure the ballcarrier has support and to form an option behind

    • @gwynfrynevans6467
      @gwynfrynevans6467 7 месяцев назад

      I think you’re right about the referee. I’ve thought this about this man for a while. It’s as if he received a new whistle for Christmas. This is not to say he had an effect on the result. I feared that the result would be worse. But I do love the way referees lecture the front rows, as if they know what’s going on. In this case, given the build of the referee, I imagine that he would have given the widest berth possible.
      On a wider point, I had a manager, a long time ago, who argued that if different people are making the same mistake, time and again, it’s the instructions that are wrong. World Rugby mantra seems to be ‘Let the game flow’ and they keep introducing amendments to make this possible. Referees don’t seem to understand this. Blatant foul play must be punished . Fiddly little things spoil the game. During one game in the autumn I conducted an admittedly unscientific survey. Using a five bar gate system I counted the number of times the referee blew his whistle FOR ALL REASONS. I abandoned this at half time, a half which I timed was 48 minutes long. The result was 39 times. I ask you? Thirty nine times in 48 minutes. Is this what they mean by letting the game flow.

    As an Irish fan, I'm happy with the result and commented after the game that Wales have been the only team that have given real competition to Ireland so far in this 6N. As a young team, they have a great future ahead of them. You mentioned discipline but Ireland were possibly worse than Wales ! It was a very open game and penalties and dropped balls were all over the place. The only thing is, Ireland are just relentless, they have a goal and they go for it, illustrated by that 82nd minute bonus point try. Wales did brilliantly for the yellow card periods in the 2nd half. I can only say these Welsh young lads have a bright future and might well be coming good for the next World Cup. Also it didn't feel like a 31-7 win. So well done Wales.

    Wales did exactly what i expected them to do and they did it well , plenty of heart and the foundations of a great side and exactly the game we needed before facing Eng , down to 14 men for 20 mins and technically denied any Welshman from crossing the line apart from the penalty try which was influenced by the Scot/ Fran debacle . All in all a very enjoyable second half and actually created a bit of atmosphere in the Aviva with a very spirited defence from Wales .

    Defo improving 100%, thought it was more of a good 70 min game today, dropped off the last 10mins. Having said that so many positives and the score line does not reflect the game at all. the defense was immense right up to the last 10 mins so strong, stopping those Irish mauls that they are so good at incredible.
    I am going to have to mention the ref but i don't mean it as an excuse, but it definitely killed any attack we had and kept the pressure on us for the first half - he was very odd for sure, I mean we all know Ireland live on the edge of offside and he didn't pick one up, but the main issues were first Porter driving in at 45 every scrum and never being seen (odd. because it was so obvious especially as the flanker was at 90 sometimes), but also when ever we had possession in the Irish half the ref was making stuff up, for example not rolling away - when there was no Welsh player on their side of the ruck, one jackal wasn't given because they had cleared out our tackler and apparently your not allowed to jackal when he is still in the ruck, two offsides, two phases after the ruck in open play, not sure how you're allowed to tackle in open play then. Oh and not putting the ball in straight at the scrum....which it wasn't but.....can you tell me a time it was in any of them.
    I'm not saying that would have given us the game as Ireland were just too strong, but it would have been a closer result if we have had a little more rub of the green at times.
    All in all , very young team rebuilding and definitely made a good fight of it, I am excited for the next two years to see how they progress , loads of talent, just need time.

    • @TheWelshSportsPodcast
      @TheWelshSportsPodcast  7 месяцев назад

      Yeah I think you’re comments about the ref are fair. You missed the hooker not throwing in straight once too. He obvs like the sound of his own whistle, interestingly though didn’t really go to his pocket all that much.
      Like you said we still wouldn’t have won the game but it defo disrupted the general flow of things. Hopefully better things come in the next 2 games 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

    That's a really accurate assessment of the game. For me, if the forwards have gone through 5 or more phases and made no headway, the half backs should be be given a go. With Adams and Dyer on the wings and good hands in midfield we need to trust the three quarters a bit more. This young side is almost there. Losing narrowly to Scotland and England was better than I expected. Ireland was a game that was always out of reach. Unfortunately that leaves us battles against France and Italy and both look better than us at the moment. Looking forward though, we still have a fair few players out and the youngsters have given a good account of themselves. With a bit more experience we could've been looking at Win Win Loss. Life's never dull with Welsh rugby. Against France we'll need a much better scrum and a bit more invention.

    What I've noticed is that when we get going, we put fantastic pressure teams and force sin bins for all Scotland, England and Ireland games. But then after doing all the hard work, we seem to let it go to our heads and completely fluff golden opportunities by not scoring anything.
    Our defence for the most part stood up really well to the most dangerous team in the world I believe. They only beat us due to the vast amounts of superior experience and there's no shame in that!

The WRFU and the way they have managed the game and the four pro teams is just second rate. Been watching wales for years , since about 1984. Modern rugby is a young man’s game , difficulty is addressing the transition from the regions to the international setup . It hasn’t helped that the wru and the regions have not seen eye to eye . Gats talked about strength and conditioning, facilities and coaching being the focus . Overall I think these young guys have shown promise , but there is unfortunately a bit of tactical naivety combined with getting isolated . Hopefully the boys will grow and begin to solve the decision making issues . This all comes with experience , can’t see us living with France , although their discipline has been a problem . Cannot fault the bois effort . Let’s hope we can add a win to the max effort they are putting in .

      Yeah I think you’re right I think we hold onto the past generation for too long at the expense of developing some younger players.
      Now that they’re all gone, we are forced to deal with the consequences of a system that hasn’t really been working right?
      I think Gats shot at the regions was a little unfair, and I think it is more harm than good with that relationship.
      That being said, I think we have a decent chance of beating France and Italy. And if we finished the six Nations with two wins, I think that will generally be a success.

Wales attack needs to show more variation, chip kicks, using wide channels, not just pounding away at a solid defense then getting turned over (easy to say, I know, and they deserved points when Wainwright was held up over the line). Great heart from the lads though, and we’re building. George had a good game, Costelow put in some good tackles, our jackalers less present coz the Irish are so good at protecting the ball when in possession

    Speaking 100% objectively as a Welshman, we lost by 24 points to a team that didn't really get out of 3rd gear. Irish fans need to stop taking the ref having an iffy game as trying to say Wales were going to win - they weren't. Ireland had 15 minutes of 14 men and in that time outscored Wales by 7 points. That's a chasm in class. The Welsh defence was quite good for large parts, they put some pressure on the Irish lineout and (finally!) Andrew Porter got pinged for not driving straight at the scrum. That said, our own scrum was a shambles, our lineout was up and down and the attack so non-existent it's not worth speaking about. Everyone going on about "lots of positives to take" need to have some honesty about where we are as a team - square one, and that's OK. But we're not developing anything, we're not trying to put together any style of play or tactics, it seems like it's just "out work them, try and keep it close." If we lose by 24 points but you could see what we're trying to do or what we're aiming to be, most fans would say, fair enough, it'll take time and there'll be a lot of days like today, but there was none of that yesterday and we shouldn't pretend as though there were. And we need to bin off this concept that "putting in the effort" is worthy of praise when it's less than the bare minimum required to play international rugby.

    First of all Cam Winnet was really good, so he's is getting better Wainright is getting good at playing 8, So two positives there, but the gluf in class was there for all to see In execution, had it not been for heroic tackling we would have shipped 6 7 tries, and yes the effort was fantastic, and these are the games the players need but and France will not be a walk in the park, but this side will not lie down and the effort must be cheered from the rooftops.
    But there are area's of concern one is our centre partnership North is fine but Tomkins looks like rag doll my Yorkshire Terrier throws and shakes like a demonic beast, we must replace him, the big difference for me was the power in the Irish ball carriers, Wales just don't have enough and that's where Rowlands should start and as good as Raffles is he lacked the power, that Morgan has.
    And then onto Costelo I just don't think he played well today I would give Lloyd another crack , but are we getting better I would say yes but the danger is just like winning losing becomes a habit and the game against France is an absolute must win for me, so the effort today was heroic the Welsh lads are working incredible hard the spirt is unquestionable , its time now to execute the game plan and put France to the sword because my god they deserve it.

    Wales got in Irelands 25 the same amount of times Ireland got in to Wales 25 , the difference being Ireland allways came away with points and Wales came away allways with nothing , time and time and time again . They seem only to concentrate at the middle of the 25 . And when they kept going down the middle almost on the line it was only in ones , twos and may be threes , never enough to threaten the line . How about fours , fives or six to really contest that ball and with good coordination with pace and speed and stay on your feet whilst doing it , arent you doing it on the training ground !!!!One wonders the preparation?? And whilst you get in those areas how about lightening passing along the line to the wingers ,varying your game quickly, keep the opposition guessing , when you do the passing down the line stop the interceptions , dropping the ball , knocking it forward , stop making mistakes all of the time . Let's have a match with MISTAKE FREE just like the ALL Blacks & Ireland . Let's also have a game of less of the kicking and more of some inventive running skills , why keep kick possession away , wont that send the wrong signals to the opposition that your afraid to take them on !

    I think the Welsh need a radical reassessment of where they are. All teams have the opportunity to bring younger players through in a gradual way. Some do it better than others. The Welsh relied upon the old stalwarts for far too long, and now they are faced with fielding a team with loads of spirit but little experience and an inability to grind out a result. The WRFU seem to have no long-term thinking. Having said all that, maybe it's too much to ask the international team to keep producing more than the sum of the parts. Lets face it, the four Welsh pro teams are not competitive at the top end of the URC, so how can they expect to turn out in a red shirt and perform miracles? In today's game, they overperformed but still lost by 24 points. It's at the grass roots and in the four pro teams that feed the national team where the problems lie. As things stand, all the optimism about the spirit and fight of the team is just hot air. They are miles off competing for a Six Nations title, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Glorious failure is still failure.
    By the way, maybe it was just a slip on the keyboard, but you do realise it was Ireland v Wales today, not Wales v Ireland?

      Overall you are right. The national team has always over performed and the pathways haven’t been right to get younger players more chances. I’m hoping the new WRU board will be able to slowly steady the ship over time and try to get things in a better state.
      I think a lot of the positivity comes from the fact that the Welsh rugby public are an intelligent one and understand exactly where we are at the moment and are happy with how the team is fighting and for every minute.
      Let’s be honest we’ve seen better Welsh teams role over in the past and these guys are refusing to do so. I for one am positive for the future of this team

      Early days but moving forward. Be good to get Morgan and Lake back asap. Adams needs a Biggar . Winnet very good and brave. Wainwright filling TF's shoes nicely. Dyer runs and runs . North and Tompkins great partners but worry how long North can go on. We also need a new sheriff in town and Feyi-Waboso must think he's made a mistake.

      @@chriswalford9228 agree with what you say and the ideal 10 and replacement for North as a hard running centre is Joe Hawkins and jarrod Evans at 10 but oh wait ? WRU 25 cap rule insanity strikes again leaving 2 quality players now playing in eng unavailable for Wales who already struggle with strength in depth.. Wales have the talent and a conveyor belt of youngsters with talent coming through from 7nder 16 to under 18 level every year but player pathway in Wales is just not capable of accommodating them for development.. wru thought farming them out to the semi pro premiership league would bridge the gap between club and regional level but it doesn't.. there's just not enough room at the top level with effectively only 4 clubs who also buy in players who are not even qualified to play for Wales resulting in gatland selecting some Welsh boys who don't even start for their regions... meanwhile young players like Evans and hawkins secure their rugby financial security playing across the border resulting in instantly unavailable for Welsh squad already struggling with depth.. the WRU circus continues..
