      He's not a voice actor, he's an actor who now specialises in digital mo cap characters.. Voice actors are a very spesific group of actors Rob Paulsen, Tara strong, Billy West, Dan Castleneta etc are voice actors and live action actors respect the hell out of them. Brad Pitt would never call himself a voice actor just because he's done some animated movies.

    • @SPlDERFlGHTER
      @SPlDERFlGHTER 3 года назад

      @@mullaoslo I don't disagree. But I choose to look at the actual vocal range, and expression in his mocap performances.
      Just because he mocaps his roles. Doesn't mean the man isn't talented at putting on different and unique voices.
      I understand the efforts he puts in, and that's what makes him an actor over a voice actor.
      He should be considered an actor over a voice actor. But the dude has the skill to actually voice act. And in my mind. He's doing great voice acting work.
      Even cartoon voice actors "act out" the script to really "get into the character". Just because it's not being mocaped doesn't mean that they aren't pouring themselves into the role still.
      The thing about Serkis is the fact he is capable of understanding physicals of the character to the most realistic degree.
      The man is an actor. But a phenomenal voice actor and a physical portrayal mastermind. The dude is the Buster Keaton of sound film.
      I agree on a lot of fronts. But where I disagree is less about the black and white of performance art. And more the general. Art is art. And the only difference between Serkis and Billy west. Is truly down to the mocaping.
      I'm saying less we should treat Serkis as a voice actor, but more we should acknowledge his range as to someone who could easily be considered. A phenomenal voice actor.
      Which also brings room to appreciate vocal actors more in general.
      Edit: ruclips.net/video/re8eISermgY/видео.html
      So here you can see where your point and your argument makes complete sense. But at the same time. How my point and argument makes sense.
      Dude literally came up with golem's voice because his cat was throwing up a hairball. That's skill. Even Mark Hamill roughly sounds the same across characters, and does voice acting for a living.

      The definition of underrated is something that has not received the merit, recognition or praise it deserves. A movie that is really very good but that no one really pays attention to or praises is an example of an underrated movie.
      Andy Serkis is one of the greatest if not THE greatest CGI actor of our time. and beyond his brilliant CGI performance he's actually a good actor in regular roles ( such as Claw in Marvel movies )
      If you want an underrated actor try Doug Jones he's an absolute legend but nobody would ever recognize him while walking on the street.
      His roles are to many to count but 99% of the time he's completely unrecognizable due to all the layers of prosthetic he wears.

    Gollum IMO is the most sympathetic villain in literary history. Never had I hated and felt so sorry for anyone as I did that pathetic,sniveling murderer. To start out initially hating him to eventually having great sympathy for his pain and suffering that he did not ask for.When he falls into Mount Doom I was happy for him in that he would NEVER be free of the ring and it had forever twisted and changed him. Even with its destruction the rings effects would cause him great harm until his death. With death being the only true release from its black vile influence. So in that instant Gollum became Smeagol again. Free after so many hundreds of years to again feel the breeze and taste bread. Allowing the sun to again touch his face.

    You mean, without Andy Serkis investment in the character of Gollum they would never had seen the potential of a real actor in the use of character CG, you mean without this man, without this hero of the cinema we would have got a Uncanny Valley CG thing with artificial and aproximate mimics.

    • @RupeeRhod
      @RupeeRhod 5 лет назад +11

      Think you're misunderstanding the uncanny valley, Gollum was made too far from an actual human to never induce that effect, the CG is nice, but isn't strong enough you believe it to be an actual real thing, the smart move with Gollum was keeping him more akin to a monstrous humanoid than an actual human.
      It's no lie that the amount of post work to make Gollum work was probably larger at the time than what Andy put into it.
      He is great, but let's not make this all about how one man made this work, he was a piece that several hands was utilized in a great way.

    One of the things I really liked about this was listening to Serkis explain his "process," how he tried to envision the character and develop a voice based on his presumed mental state/physicality/etc without sounding like a pompous, high-handed twit who could scarcely be any more impressed with himself..
    It seems to be a common trait among Brit actors, one which I enjoy a lot; they are serious about their craft, and typically very diligent and committed to doing it well. Here in America, successful actors seem to share those traits...but get them started talking about themselves, they start to sound as if they really think they are awesome, sent to Earth with talent on loan from God to make the world a better place, frequently throwing around phrases like "As an artist..." all that sort of thing.
    on the other hand: watch some respected, august, RADA-trained thespian like Peter O'Toole, John Gielgud, Richard Harris, Ian McKellen, et al, who cut their teeth doing Shakespeare at the Old Vic-- the kind of actors who could probably get a pass for sounding like a bit of a self-important stuffed shirt-- and they're very plain-spoken and self-effacing.
    I remember watching Ben Kingsley-- an actor I enjoy tremendously--talk about playing the role of Meyer Lansky in "Bugsy," how he prepared for the role and pursued it, and I remember him simply saying "I get to the set on time, I have my lines memorized, I stand where I'm told to stand, and I say the lines as they're meant to come out." That's it.
    Another time I was watching one of Alan Rickman's last interviews, and the interview cut away for a couple of minutes to a montage of various Hollywood big-shots and heavy hitters carrying on about what a stone-cold killer he was as an actor, how they were better actors for having worked with him, yadda, yadda, yadda. When asked about how he went about being such a great actor, he kinda smiled sheepishly and said it was "all about good script-writing." As he more or less put it: if the script is well-written, if the lines are good and the dialogue makes the character interesting, then all he had to do to deliver a good performance was say them properly.

    THE RING
    The whole story, as I understand it, was that Peter Jackson gave one ring to Elijah Wood and another to Andy Serkis, but for a long time each of them thought they had the only ring. Perfectly fitting in my estimation since each of their characters was, albeit for different reasons, obsessed with keeping the ring. In the end they both got it. Beautiful! Another thing - I thought that the closing credits of ROTK were the best I have ever seen in cinema: the artistically beautiful renderings of the characters, the outrageously beautiful song as sung by Annie Lenox ('Into The West') and most of all by the very very end - all of the writing is off the screen and a centered-on-the-screen picture of the ring was the last image of the credits which struck me immediately with the thought that much like the plane in 'Top Gun' the ring was the main character of the movie ... and fittingly takes the last bow.

My first time experiencing Tolkien’s works, I don’t don’t think I would have appreciated it as much if Andy didn’t narrate it, he did such an amazing amazing job 👏👏

    so i just looked up that scene with gollum trying to stop the boys on mount doom, and it is an absolute credit to andys acting skill, the editing team, and their ability to work together to bring motion capture tech forward and use it to create an amazing trilogy, in a triple concurrent production schedule. btw, does anyone know exactly how that stuff is scheduled? how does that scene, of all things, randomly become the first thing they do? im dying to know the details behind that process. i find it endlessly fascinating overall but particularly with the LOTR franchise. that was an absolute tour de force as we all know.

    I had a cat help me in something similar. My ex and I use to play World of Warcraft and I was laying awake one night in the dark trying to come up with the name of a new character I was creating, which sometimes is very difficult. As I was laying there thinking, my cat had wandered into the room and like Andy's cat, started to hack up a hair ball. Part of my brain wondered "how would you spell that sound?" So the creation of my Night Elf....Oobleck was born. Little did I know at the time that it's also the name of the mixture of equal amounts of cornstarch and water. It's still one of my favorite characters.

    Gollum haunts me like no other work of fiction. What's his fascination? He represents addiction, yes; he's a ring junky, but that doesn't quite encompass Gollum. Gollum is villain of all villains and the most sympathetic victim of all victims. He got the highest prize beyond anything anyone else could achieve, but it took everything from him, the friends he might have had, the loves he might have had, the children he might have had. It sucked every bit of joy out of his life but wouldn't even allow him to die. He had to live in agony forever.
