I just absolutely adore the Alien-like bass drop here. It really gives off the vibe that whatever this 'Thing' emitting the shimmer really is from a totally different world entirely.
So it was the alien making that sound. Peace ✌🏻
It created the world. This movie is an attempt to articulate the abstract concept of a supreme creator.

Keep in mind, there's no indication that this was intentional. This could easily be a Roadside Picnic situation, where whatever extraplanetary or dimensional force responsible for it has already been and gone, and all of this is just the stuff left over from its visit. What makes true cosmic horror is how much isn't explained or understood.
Nah you need somebody to show up halfway through the movie and explain all the ins and outs of what "Baghool" is. Throw in a couple jump scares and you've got a movie!

@HitProof Not exactly. Proto-cosmic horror existed in “The House on The Borderland” by William Hodgson, who Lovecraft was heavily inspired by. Plus The Shimmer here can be killed by grenades, something in Lovecraft is never gonna happen. I’d say the book’s Shimmer is more Lovecraftian than the film’s.

Probably the best Non-Lovecraft Lovecraft movie I've ever seen. It just feels like something you will never be able to understand.
Its pretty much the Color Out of Space, which is a story he directly wrote.
Strange alien creature arrives on a meteor from outer space and starts to destroy everything around it with its very presence, sucking the life out of everything around it, mutating and changing the higher lifeforms.
Actually the more I think on it the more this story directly copies it in so many ways.
@Not Alfie yeah it is
The shimmer absorbed every aspect of her essence, which also means it absorbed her human nature: self destruction. The doppleganger was the physical embodiment and of all her guilt. Explaining why it allowed itself to be killed. It was accepting that, no matter what, it would inevitably destroy itself
great theory, but I'm guessing that it didn't die at all. the Leena who was being interrogated was a duplicate. it must have made up the story that the human killed it to not rouse the others' suspicions. it was posing to be human with the other alien, her husband's duplicate. they seem to want to hide
@@thisisthewronghat2706 no you literally see it die
martin goodman I think the alien did die. But also Lena isn’t out of the shimmer fully unscathed, the shimmer distort anything that enters it. Whether this post-shimmer Lena is still Lena or not is up to your perspective (and philosophy). One thing for sure is she isn’t human anymore.
The alien learns self destruction and Lena learns adaptation/change. Personally i think the ending carries a hope that Lena (and probably humanity after her) can finally escape the biological self destruction nature, of course not without a trade off.
That makes so much sense and really fits the theme of the movie
This a canon
i get why most people don't like the movie, but there is so much more meaning behind it and a lot more story, i adored this movie, and the book

Imagine witnessing something like this. The feeling would be immense dread. it would feel like you heart has sunk into your gut and you can feel the blood pump throughout your entirety as you breathe heavier and heavier with each passing moment.. it would be the opposite of a panic attack as you're just paralyzed in pure fear of the unkown and in complete awe.

All these cosmic blasts of colors and lights are beyond one's comprehension and interpretation. You can't be scared of something you can't process and relate to. Unless you're an acid abuser/an astronomer/a microbiologist or something along those lines I don't think you should be scared at all.
Siodenesse L. Fear is exactly what you said it wasn’t, actually. Fear is unknown-not having knowledge of what you are seeing or experiencing. Nina handled it as well as a human probably could since she was in The Shimmer and saw strange things already. An acid abuser or scientist would handle this better than anyone else, but even then it would be beyond them
agreed and i think Portman delivered that perfectly here. Her body language, her not being able to look away and being drawn and hypnotized by it. I also noticed how she didn't even attempt to attack it until it coalesced into the humanoid shape.
The score for the shimmer is so captivating. The bass is mesmerizing but not excessive. It’s just amazing

I have never been in a more quiet theater than during this scene
I saw this movie 5 times in the theaters. The first time was in a partially filled theater with a few people who were like “OMG, what is that!”. Ruined it for me. I went back the next day and caught the first viewing of the day. The theater was completely empty and I sat in the sweet spot. I came back a few more times after inviting some of my friends. They were too busy doing chores. My friend eventually went on her own and said it was an incredible scene. Two other friends of mine waited until it came out on Netflix. Neither of which had a sound system. The sound design needs to be heard on big rumbling speakers. I remember the bass vibrating through me and my seat. Some movies are meant to be watched in movie theater and this was one of them. Watching it on a TV at home does not do it justice.
I am so jealous of you guys seeing this in the theater.
Watching this in theaters was an experience. My seat (and my whole body really) was shaking the entire time from the bass. It felt like when you go to a concert and music becomes this thing you FEEL, not just hear. It was deeply unsettling. Never been so anxious and as glued to the screen as I was during this whole sequence.
This movie and Imterstellar were the most incredible theater experiences ever.

Well, this alien thing is pretty much like a cosmic random number generator, an abstract force of pure creativity. It takes both living and non-living things from its surroundings and recombines them, clones or changes them up seemingly randomly within the shimmering field it generates. It may have some sort of intelligence or motivation, but it's so truly alien and abstract, that it cannot be analyzed or fathomed by the human mind. Like a god, mysterious and beyond understanding.
It's a bit like an undirected form of forced evolution and creation it seems. Maybe the very power, which started life in the universe?
@@axelhopfinger533 A god isn't the right analogy because the gods imagined and worshiped by humans all have very human-like traits and behaviors. We made them in our own image.

I love the design of the alien entity; It’s more of a cosmic force of nature than a living corporeal creature we can fully understand, pure Lovecraft.
The shimmer might not even be an organism -- just a very sophisticated machine that was left here by whatever visited Earth. A very sophisticated version of a Roomba.

The Sound Design from this Movie is absolutely Scary.....
I remember leaving the theatre with the weirdest feeling ever. It lasted for like 30 minutes.
Epic scene .Epic soundtrack
This movie is basically a concept to explain in a way existentialism.
We are made of universe at the end of the day and all this "alien" does is replicates her existence , that's why there is the "dance" later in the movie , where the clone does the same thing she does and the more she refuses/fights the clone , the more the clone becomes her worst fear , almost eating her, like when we can't accept who we are and we want to stop existing , in the end , accepting her own existence (and the clone one) she passed the feeling to the clone itself ; now the clone has the understanding of human self-destruction (in this case the main character) and that's why the replica stood still while burning , she wanted to burn.
At the same time i don't understand how this movie was hard to "catch", people really are dumbed down , they can't think with their own mind or have their own ideas/opinion.
What a disgrace , this is pure art.
Nothing is true, everything is permitted
The music makes it seem as if the sound is coming from the thing. So dope!
Whoever was behind the audio play rights nailed the “alien nature” 100%
