    It happens . My loved one died in the blizzard of '77. Very sad. His heart wasn't strong enough to clear heavy snow.

    Same as 2014 lake effect storm - I was in Erie PA shopping and had to drive home a few days after. 8 years exactly to the day.

    Here in Windsor Ontario we never get storms like this. I think we only got around 30cms all winter last year. Hope this year we get more.

    I lived in that area for many years. So far this is nothing. I often see drastic statements by reporters and then notice that the snow is only 4 to 6 inches above the ground next to buildings, fire hydrants etc. The higher areas of snow are just snow drifts from blowing snow.

      As I mentioned in another post the Tug Hill area which is east of lake Ontario can get over 400 inches in a season. I doubt you get that much. I am a Canadien living in northern New York State. And houses in tug hill have doors on the second floor so that you can get out of the house.

    i remember the great storm of '78 very well. in some of our Niagara regions the snow reached the top of telephone poles. so this isnt so bad.

      I recall it as in 1977 around noon and we were sent home, but I couldnt get home to Hamburg. Had to stay with strangers in S. Bflo. Glad I live in Virginia now!

      google The Great Storm of 1978 . it stretched from Ohio to all the Great Lake states and Lower Canada. the National Weather Service has lots of info on it. this storm is nothing in comparison.

      Perhaps it is a requirement to keep exits/entrances passable for fire safety reasons. Where I live I know that factories and public buildings must remove snow from outside fire exits all around their buildings.

      It's called 'snow removal management'. As you could see the guy with the snowblower was already having a hard time with that amount of snow. If you wait until the end of the storm that machine would be useless. You have to keep up with removal so you have a manageable amount each time you go out.

    I used to live in the Northeast and I just couldn't take the winters. The anxiety of having to get up early and scrape the snow and ice off my car, shovel the driveway and then driving to work in that mess kept me up all night. Now, I just sit back and love watching these winter storm videos from my home in Phoenix, AZ. 😂

    I remember storms like this always seem to happen on the south side of Lake Ontario. Known as lake effect. I don't recall storms nearly this bad in the GTA

      Actually Buffalo and the "snowy parts" of New York State get their snow due to westerly wind off Lake Erie. Saturated air moving westerly across 200 miles of Lake Erie, slamming into the colder land and elevation of southern Buffalo and surrounding area.

    Back in like 85, I got caught in a record breaking lake effect snow storm. I was talking to another truck driver who was from the area. He looked out to the west and hurriedly said “ come on, we have to go now, or be stuck here for maybe days “ ! By the time we got on the big road, it was coming down so fast and heavy that my wipers kept getting stuck. Within literally mins, it was measured in feet, not inches. There was only one lane, and the big trucks could barely keep it passable. It was between 3 and 4 feet of snow. If you stopped for anything, you couldn’t get started again, and that’s in a semi truck.

      Yes i remember i had my son in 85 and 85 to 86 was a year for tons of snow, everyday i had to
      shovel and shovel so my husband could get in
      the driveway after work. We bought a snowblower
      that Spring and then the next year we had very
      little snow. lol.

      When damage due to hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, droughts, floods, etc. are the exception rather than the norm, the occasional severe winter storm is a reasonable trade-off.
