Drawing Animals for Beginners - Part 1 - Structure & Form

- Hello! I hope you enjoy this beginner's guide to drawing animals! In part 1, I show you how to understand the underlying structure of animals. Many animals have a very similar skeletal structure and it's often a matter of knowing which of those basic structures to modify to achieve a particular animal. Once we go over structure, I show you how to build the form of the animal around the structure using photo references. And also how to modify your structure to accommodate various poses. Stay tuned for part 2 where we'll get into action, foreshortening, and details!

**Just noticed that I messed up on the bird structure... I didn't include the pelvis, which is actually tilted upward... so that would have been important! Somehow I have just part of the leg attached to nothing. As Homer Simpson would say: "Doh!"

When I was a kid I loved drawing animals, including extinct ones like dinosaurs. After 20 years I've started redeveloping my interest in drawing. I follow paleoartists and scientific illustrator's on online media platforms and they made me want to draw again. Your video is quite simple and pretty good.

Ive been trying (and falling) to self teach myself how to do the basic structure drawing. Im a stubborn person when it comes to tutorials, which tends to mean I avoid them until I get desperate.. but here I am. desperate as usual, and found his wonderfully simple tutorial thats going to be so helpful! thankyou for this!

I am frustrated at my inability to draw. I find this very helpful as am drawing every day. Over and over and over until I am happy with the likeness. I'm taking a course, which includes drawing animals in a field and almost quit...before I discovered you. Thank you.

Excellent video that gives a simple way of creating a fairly general animal structure although with variations according to animal type. Very helpful to someone (like me) who is looking for a way into sketching animals. Thankyou for posting this.

Even though I know what things look like in my mind -I can see them fine, I really can, ,but I just can't seem to get them onto the paper. By the way you are very talented and a very good teacher.
Things i learn by skipping alot
1.start with ribcage to help simplify
2.try to figure out the underline of an animal
This is amazingly helpful 😂. I used to start with the head and it would turn out too big and all that. I saw your next video as well, it helped me stop the cartoony faces. I wanted to get out of those type of drawings. Thank you.

When I was little, I used to draw a bird with a big oval body with stick legs.. 10yrs later, I'm learning these stuff from scratch, how ironic!

Hi, basically im trying to practice drawing for me to draw the animal I hunt(I wanna be a hunter but I got nothing to do to prepare so I chose to practice drawing animals). Also I really like dinosaurs and Im going to be a paleontologist in the future. So is there any advice can you tell me?Like I just wanna draw something so I dont know where to start but watch videos like this.Basically any advice really help, a book, type of pencil basically small stuff and others.Also may I ask whats the equipment or what do you need to draw?Another thing is im really confused since theres a lot of grip and I dont know which one should I use, since the overhand grip I think its for any type of drawing?Im just new to art and dont know a single thing so I guess I’ll need someone to help me out lol thx.

Well i mean im kind of used to drawing the normal way rather then the way you did because the hurting is normal for me ill just let it cool down and later ill start again like a slow process but its ok drawing takes patience to it.

Why do so many artists have that similar cutting board grid on their desks? Is there a purpose or benefit in scetching or drawing? Isn't is a soft and pliable surface where your pencil or pen can puncture the paper?

Im confused with this videos, i cant see anything, tried to mess with my tv settings but theres no settings to make everything cleary visible, i got this problem with most of the drawing videos. Hard to learn when im not seeing whats being drawn.

I tried to draw a little with your grip and my hand is refusing to draw with any grip now
what is №2 pencil? Is it indicate it's softness? B? H?
Hello, yes this is just a standard No.2 pencil. I wanted to demonstrate drawing without any special utensils for these videos. A No.2 pencil is most similar to "HB" meaning that it is considered the in-between pencil for hardness vs softness. I hope that helps!
It is hard for me to hold the pencil like that because I hava a very shaky hand
