Also from this concert, “The Party is Over” and “Stone in Love”. Really any song from this concert is performed perfectly. The band is at it’s best at this time.
My sound engineer was at this exact concert in Houston on this night... he said it was mind blowing to a level he is unable to explain. He saw them in 81, 83 and 86 ..
Steve Perry’s voice has been analyzed a whole lot, just like they analyzed Freddie Mercury’s voice. They are in agreement that he is pitch perfect. In the ranges he sings that cannot be easy. And they really do sound this good live. Thanks for the great reaction! 💗
Freddy Mercury was asked what it was like to have the greatest voice in Rock and Roll, and he said, to ask Steve Perry. Also, Mariah Carey also has total reverence for Steve Perry, as well. She and Freddy Mercury, would be the ones to know incredible vocals.
There's a reason why bands from the 70's and 80's still tour. They can sing live. Twice saw Journey in concert, with Steve Perry. They never disappointed!
It was always real back then. We had the best music, the musicians and the best talent. I know I saw it all. The sixties and seventies produced the best talent…it was no auto tune, just straight up talent. You either had it or you didn’t.

I’ve seen Journey, live and in person 5 times. Every show was pure energy. It was a high that stays with you all week. Lovin, Touchin and Squeezin, City of the Angels (which have to be played back to back every time!) probably top my list. Followed by Girl Can’t Help It. The full 5 part harmony at the end of that song is a killer!
They had to be good, they didn't have all the technology to help them cover up mistakes while doing live shows. Practice and dedication to their craft was super important back in the day.
I saw these guys in 1981 and 1983 at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin. Awesome music venue back then. Steve Perry to this day is on the top of the list of greatest vocalists of all time. Their live shows were like a dream for this teenager at the time.
Everybody in the 80s loved Journey. All the Rock kids , all the new wave kids , country kids , etc... It might not have been cool to let people know it but I'll bet everyone had a cassette tape of theirs buried somewhere.
I love hearing him hear, singing this live. He sounds so fantastic. I don't need "Journey" nowadays. I put it in quotes because they are not Journey without Steve to me.
It's sad that Steve isn't with the band anymore. If things absolutely had to change, IMO, Arnel Pineda was a great choice. No one will ever match Steve's voice!
My two favorites of Journey, Don't Stop Believin' AND Who's Crying Now. I really love both, the music and rhythm. I always play these in my car. Open Arms is awesome too. I think its the basslines in WCN and DSB that really get to me. Add deep bass with his silky vocals and it's a great dichotomy.
Steve is a natural bel canto singer in his flow and open vowels . Who’s Crying Now from this concert is also worth hearing. The entire show is incredible.
I think my favorite song of them is Lights. Reminds me of seeing the Sun come up on Lake Michigan the morning after my high school graduation with friends.
Mother Father live from the same live tour, separate ways, faithfully, who's crying now and of course Lay it down. Steve "The Voice" Perry won't let you down. Mother father and Lay it down vocals are crazy especially the live version.
@@algallegoeah, i meant Mother Father live version from this tour and then making other suggestions as well not necessarily the live version from this tour 🙂
Favorite song from Journey, I don't know, so many. Lights is up there as well as Faithfully, Stone in Love, Lovin-touchin-squeezin. Saw them live in the 80's with Bryan Adams opening, freaking amazing.

Saw this tour in DC at the Capitol Center. They played mostly in arenas and hockey rinks for this tour. The stage was almost circular with only about a 60 degree wedge directly behind the drums blocked off. Steve would sing and move to all 300 degrees of the stage.
I got to meet Steve Perry and Neil Schon before the concert. We had just the album and that’s all before the concert. They smashed it!!! They came out for an encore and said, “we don’t know anymore songs….. they sang 2 songs again they had already done”. It was amazing!!!!
It's hard to believe that the band in this video did not want Steve Perry as their lead vocalist when he was first hired. They didn't change him, he changed them and their direction. The rest is history!! Don't stop believing.....
I seen them in Mobile, AL in 79 or was it 80? Halloween night! Sounded just as good as the Journey 8 track I had in the old Cutlass in the parking lot. Ok I know I'm just reminiscing. Oh how I wish I could go back to the age of 16 and do it all over again. Man would I do a few things differently.
You know it was a great night out with your friends , when you wake up hungover and one of your mates has all of you recorded on their mobile, drunkenly singing this song on a karaoke machine, with the other patrons of the pub/bar/club joining in. Ahhh, great days. 😁
The drummer is very underrated and under-appreciated on this track. I was one of those that never gave this guy much credit, until I started to learn this song on drums to play in my cover band. Where most drummers in this era would play this more straight on the main groove and add big fills and accents where appropriate, this dude lays back and supports with a stealthy shuffle feel going on. If you listen close, he is using tom-toms throughout the groove, yet somehow it is not enough to call it a "tom groove". He manages to complement the main rhythm with the toms and give the percussion a faux half-time feel. It threw me off at first....not because it is difficult to play, but rather because it is far more busy than I thought. What helped me was when I realized that he was mimicking the other rhythm instruments on the toms. So he wasn't just keeping time, he was incorporating drums into the composition.

For sure Mother Father is Great live I feel Steve got his energy from the Audience my Favorite is Sweet and simple
That’s a legit point, because it’s been said that Steve himself considers it one of the hardest songs for him to sing.

His voice in Faithfully is breathtaking!
They called him The Voice for good reason. My favorite of theirs and one of my all time favorite songs is Faithfully.
One of the greatest vocalists without autotune. He's an enigma!
Also no in ear
I believe his voice is about as pure and natural as you can get.
Brad Delp of Boston and Freddie Mercury certainly had well above average voices that sounded as good as the record when they were live.
