An iPod touch from 2009 was less laggy than those climate controls. You would think that automakers would know how to make an infotainment that responds immediately to your inputs in 2018. I’m baffled that this is still a problem.
There's quite a lot of graphics to process with these multi-screen systems, not to mention background computational tasks and power management, all of which accounts for processor performance. If they really wanted to eliminate screen lag they can boost the processor speeds or multiply the core count - but that requires more battery power, so there is a tradeoff.
Matthew Hynds sorry, no. This is an inability to write correct software, nothing more nothing less. The graphics to run a zippy climate control need 5 cents worth of computing power. This was even done in 1979. There is no excuse at all for laggy 2019 product.
That threw me off as well. If an automaker is using a screen it should work better. Also, using screens for everything makes it feel less safe in my mind as it is less intuitive to blind touch. That and the slow response make it inconvenient if you need to watch the road.
Yeah using that climate control makes the car look like it’s been used for years and is not updated. Yet it’s brand spankin new. They should be able to do better than that.
And this is a new car. We all know what happens with computers over time...they get slower and slower and buggier and buggier. Automotive industry has a reputation to use 10-15 year old IT infrastructures (in ECUs and TCMs and stuff). Now they are forced to have tablet PCs instead of normal controls. A giant leap, no wonder they can rarely get it right. God save us.
😂😂😂😂😂😂exactly what I was thinking. Jaguar cant even keep the climate knobs working past 50K in regular cars but you want me to buy an all electric car from them.
An electric vehicle from a company that historically has the worst reliability of their electronic systems. I can't wait for customers reliability ratings.
Tony Tierno I have a feeling the complaints will stay based in the dashboard and not with the drivetrain. Tesla has terrible reliability ratings because they’ve gone way ambitious on engineering bits and pieces. Jaguar’s design is perhaps a little more plain. The climate control stuff will probably be the first complaint. I don’t think it’ll be significantly less reliable than your average Jag.
Tony Tierno Tesla’s product design isn’t all that fresh anymore. The luster is wearing off a little from what they had a few years ago, so their reliability issues are glossed over less than they used to be. Electric cars for the masses will definitely have their growing pains, even when made by the Germans, but the Audi offerings should be pretty appealing, not to mention those of Porsche and BMW as they try to infuse some driving fun along with electric efficiency.
I wouldn't even bother with a test drive after seeing that input lag. It's unacceptable even in a significantly older car, make it work well or don't bother trying to sell it. Shame because I like the rest of the car but that trash interface is integrated into everything and makes it all useless.
as a forklift driver who drives prim. electric driven forklifts, I can't wait to get my hands on an electric car because I am so used to just 1 pedal driving, I never touch the brakes on a forklift unless I need an instant stop for an obstacle like another forklift for example. It saves your brakes and gets you going further, it's amazing regenerative braking
was thinking that. ping 200 is very generous. We used to play shooters all the time in the early 2000s with a ping of 150-170. feels more like ping of 600ms.
all the online games I play are with 300 ping... so that's definitely an improvement...... of course I also die a lot in these online games... but that's because my team mates are bad...
@@davidspropaganda That's being very generous. Most people think I'm still living in the Edwardian era. These newfangled horseless carriages will never amount to a thing.
As a recent MX owner I'll say I'm glad to see another option in the EV world. I sat and test drove an I-pace and here's what I think: - I think it looks better than my MX - but that is subjective and not objective. - The I-pace really has no business comparing itself to an X. It's closer to the new Hyundia Kona as far as sizing. My 3 kids feel a little cramped in the X coming off a premium minivan - the I-Pace is even more cramped (especially in headroom). - The seats do feel more luxurious than the X seats unless you have the P100D seats with cooling. - The interior fit and finish is about the same (2016 Xs had new design issues - other than a tight window actuator my X has been squeak free no interior quality issues). The plastic in the jaguar looks cheaper and feels more fragile than in the X (as X has very few buttons to begin with) - Front visibility is a little bit better in the Jaguar when strictly looking at city driving. Back visibility is worse than the X because of the roof rake. The Tesla has no equal for everyone else sitting in the vehicle - my kids point things out on road trips that you can only see through the roofline or that massive windshield. - Jaguar is a little bit snappier off the line. 0-60 numbers show it about .4 seconds faster than my 75x. It's the same as a 100X though. - Jaguar feels a little bit more nimbler. I'm still afraid to scratch my new X so I baby it taking it into parking lots, the Jaguar is just smaller and easier to maneuver. - The controls on the I-pace are too laggy. Several times when testing it would wait 3 to 4 seconds when switching displays. The ergonomics of the X, in my opinion, are just unbeatable though. I did have one display crash on my X which required a reset - so music was down for 2 minutes. It's basically a giant touchscreen computer. Not sure how stable/buggy the I-pace is. - The storage/cargo space of the X is pretty much 1.5x that of the I-Pace. I'm not even sure why Jaguar even bothered with the frunk. I-pace can have a usable roof rack which the X will never have. The I-Pace toying capability is about that of a Camry. X has much better towing options and capability. - My X is the lowly/cheaper 75KWH variant. At 90% charge I have 211 miles of range which oddly was what Doug showed on the I-Pace. But the I-pace has a 90KWH battery pack. So the I-pace has much worse miles/KWH - it uses well over 400watthours/mile. That's disappointing considering it weighs less and holds 2 less seats and has a smaller cross sectional area. That's where the Jaguar styling (which I think looks better) hurts their efficiency. Obviously the I-Pace has more rolling resistance and a high drag coef as well as less optimal battery management - but they haven't been in business for 10 years like Tesla. - The most important thing for me was safety rating. I'm coming off a minivan. I don't really give a rats ass what other people think of the vehicle I'm driving short of me driving a school bus. The engineering that went into designing the Tesla clearly shows if you watch the crash videos. Basically almost no intrusion into where the battery packs are. I still don't trust the self driving system because it is unable to compensate when other humans deviate from normal behavior (like people who decide to do a U-turn on a freeway or switch across 4 lanes in 1 second - the usual driving seen here in Southern California car chase capitol of the world). It is a nice vehicle and I agree with Doug - if you're considering the other "pace" variants this one is the best. If you must have an electric and love Jaguar then go for it. if you want nearly the same capability as the I-pace at about 1/2 the cost (after tax credits) I would go for a Hyundai Kona instead. If you have the money, nothing beats the X 75, and if you need even more range the 100 is available for about 17K more. If you take road trips or have unpredictable trips then the Tesla charging network is superior to all others. Otherwise, daily charging at home is sufficient for any EV for daily use. I disagree with Doug's score though. I don't see the "value" in the I-pace. The Hyundai Kona has more value if you're strictly talking lowest price. The X has more value the second you realize you can't care luggage for you family of 5 to the airport with the I-pace, let alone 6 or 7 people.
Very, very thorough review and I hope people read your comment as well as watch Doug’s video before making any rash decisions and selling their X for an I-Pace or anything of such manner. The I-Pace has much potential but I still don’t think it’s on a Tesla level just yet, but I do believe it’s pushing the market and many, many more options that are driving close to home with Tesla are becoming readily available. Tesla continues to adapt and become better, they’ll just have to keep it up if they want to stay on top; that being said, I don’t see them going anywhere anytime soon. Tesla is here to stay and I truly believe they’ll become as common as your typical Camry within a decade.
I also own a Tesla 75D but a Model S. I agree with everything mentioned in the OP comment. I could be nice and say how good the Jag is (it's far better than all the ICE cars on the market) but if you are considering one over a Tesla, that's cool if you love Jags but Tesla is the better car hands down. I won't go into too much detail but the Jag is about on par with a Tesla from 5 years ago. Hyundai Kona EV and the new Kia EV are seriously better in many ways than this Jaguar. The Koreans are doing amazing work and will probably dominate the EV market as they seem to be far ahead in efficiency and battery technology. Dont get me wrong I love the Ipace but Teslas are VERY special cars.
Found this old video and thought I would share my experience with the 2019 IPace. In a word, it’s been fantastic. Doug accurately portrays the pros and cons of the vehicle. I shopped a Tesla model three and Y prior to buying the IPace, but couldn’t get my head around the minimalism for the sake of minimalism that is the interior of the model three and Y. The IPace interior looks like a real car. I have three screens integrated tastefully into the dash plus a heads up display, and all four of these sources of information are configurable. I have information where I need it, switches where it makes sense to have them, and where I need them, and I don’t have to go into a tacked on iPad to do literally everything on the vehicle. I have a real blindspot warning indicator in the rearview mirror, as opposed to a camera image in the lower part of the screen on the iPad in a Tesla. Try checking your left blindspot by looking down and to the right sometime. It just doesn’t work. The layout, materials, and luxury of the interior is an order of magnitude better than the Tesla with its iPad center screen that looks like an afterthought. I have leather, radar, and ultrasonic sensors which Tesla recently - and ridiculously - eschewed. I’m coming out of a 2003 Audi RS6. If you know this car, you know it’s fast and handles well. Compared to the Audi, the iPace is actually a bit quicker off the line, not quite as punchy at high speeds, and handles arguably as well. The only place where the Tesla beats the iPace is the auto pilot system. But frankly, I bought this thing so I could drive it, not be chauffeured. I’ll trade the less capable auto pilot system in The iPace for everything else it does better than the Tesla any day of the week. RUclips should let me post a picture I took of my iPace parked next to a Model Y. The styling isn’t even close. The IPace looks fluid and organic, designed by Ian Callum, who also designed the latest Aston, Martin sports cars and the Jaguar F type. Jaguar knows how to make cars look good. Tesla knows how to make cars look like dinosaur suppositories. Sure, taste is in the eye of the beholder, but anyone who thinks that the model Y has nice proportions is, well, there’s just something wrong with them.
@@Louie_Vision No unusual battery drain. I try to keep the battery between 20% and 80% but go below or above these numbers for short periods of time on trips. I charge mainly at home (fast charging is harder on batteries than slow charging) but do fast charge on trips, but I try to avoid fast charging when the battery is above 80% as that is hardest on the battery. If out of town for a week or so I leave it at about 70% and it doesn’t seem to drain much, a couple of percent a week maybe. I have 25,000 miles on it and it still shows the advertised 230 range. All this battery management limits usable range so most long trips are taken in my ICE vehicle. The iPace is a terrific second car but like all electrics not the best for seeing Grandma if she is several hundred miles away.

but span What? None of that made any sense. Tesla makes its battery packs in Nevada, but assembles their cars in Fremont, California. While the warranty on a Tesla battery lasts 8 years, Model S drivers who own 2012 and 2013 models with 100k plus miles are reporting only 5-10% degradation, meaning that battery pack could conceivably last 300k plus miles. The packs can then be recycled to make Powerwalls. The I-Pace has horrible electric efficiency, somewhere around 400 wh/mi - it’s significantly worse than the Model X and that seats 7 adults. The I-Pace is simply too heavy.

I purchased a 2019 I Pace this week which had come in off lease. Amazing car that I can attest holds up well after 20,000 miles. I'm impressed that the battery does not appear to have declined at all as it's still showing 230 miles range with a full charge. I never thought of owning a Jag before as I was a little scared about British build quality. This car is built by Magna Steyr in Austria who also build the MB G wagon's, the BMW 5 series and a lot of other luxury cars. As these cars come onto the used market the represent a great value.
Five years is well within the buffer imposed on the battery capacity. You never get to drive the full range on an EV's battery-- they deliberately hold some of the battery capacity in reserve, which is gradually taken up as the battery supply degrades over time. As old cells go bad, the previously untouched cells are activated to take their place. That's why no one sees any degradation in range until 10+ years, when that buffer is finally used up.
Nice car, but seeing how slow the interfaces move, even on the climate control buttons makes me cringe. Legacy automakers need to get a handle on software or they will soon be obsolete.
@@damonnoonan6512 That's just bad excuse. Developing an intuitive UI isn't the hardest job there is. These screen should perform the right way by receiving input by the user and then on-screen instantly change the variable so the UI always stays smooth and the user knows that he changed it. Then in the background a process will start to operate the mechanical part with the variable based on the user input for example setting the A/C to 21 degrees. The UI should never lagg and the software and hardware should be decoupled. Tesla has done this perfectly for years now.

As a recent MX owner I'll say I'm glad to see another option in the EV world. I sat and test drove an I-pace and here's what I think:
- I think it looks better than my MX - but that is subjective and not objective.
The plastic in the jaguar looks cheaper and feels more fragile than in the X (as X has very few buttons to begin with)
- Front visibility is a little bit better in the Jaguar when strictly looking at city driving.
Nice well articulated reasoning.
Can you do this as a book XD
DID YOU *WRITE* ALL OF THAT
Found this old video and thought I would share my experience with the 2019 IPace.
Love our 19 HSE, been waiting for this car since they came out.
Have you had any issues with the battery draining faster than usual?

While the warranty on a Tesla battery lasts 8 years, Model S drivers who own 2012 and 2013 models with 100k plus miles are reporting only 5-10% degradation, meaning that battery pack could conceivably last 300k plus miles.

You seem to forget that Tesla encourages other EV manufacturers to take advantage of their existing charging network, it's not exclusive to Teslas
@@JOLuthi you can't charge any other car on Tesla super charger...
@goodfella21f Ah I didn't know that. Why wouldn't they though? That seems like a smart move
I own one and it’s magnificent. It silently eats up almost anything on the road while it turns heads of the most discriminating car owners.
That’s why I love mine so much 19 First Edition. Even today no one knows what it is and you hardly see any around even here in SoCal while Teslas are littered everywhere. Theres no compromise from luxury, performance, styling, and tech. I miss certain features from my e tron that got totaled but the I pace is incredible.
I'm thinking about getting a used 2019 how has the battery life been?
@@Freerider93I usually charge to 85%. Costs me around $7.50. Gets me around 200 miles. If you charge fully (and the dealer seems to think that’s ok) the gauge will show 240 miles til empty. I would care if I got 100 miles on a charge. I’m just giddy when I get into the thing.

This is closer to a model s than an x
I have to admit it's a bit more attractive than the X. This is coming from a Tesla fanboy that has never really liked Jaguar. They really nailed the design.
why is this marketed as an SUV....? this is a hatchback....
Because a hatchback is smaller.
Clearly don't know what a hatchback is buddy...
kia stinger has no problem calling itself a hatchback same thing with the current civic
Cause it will sell more if it's called that
It's like people calling the Model X an SUV when in reality it is a minivan.
This is way smaller than a Model X though, so comparing them apples-to-apples might not be that fair
Yep, iPace is a heavier, less efficient, more expensive (or slower) Model 3.
Way smaller is right - the Model X has a massive 70% more cargo space than the i-Pace. That difference is more than the i-Pace trunk volume itself.
@@house9120 Yea you can have a 3rd row in a model x
It's not even comparable to the Model S. Barely more space than the Model 3.
Just wait for the 40k model Y comes out and beat the crap out of this car.
Doug the type of guy to never read comments

Looked at both the Tesla Model 3 and the Jaguar I-Pace for my next car and choose the I-Pace.
That was six months ago as of May 2020 and 11 K miles the experience so far has been excellent. ZERO problems, excellent build quality, both on the in- and outside. Very comfortably ride yet very quick if you want it to be.
Now the temperatures are going up, so has my rang, from about 220 miles in the winter to around 280 miles by May 2020.
Am very happy I bought the I-Pace, it's simply a lot more car than a Model 3 which by now are all over the place.
Thank you. I'm dealing with this dilemma right now
I’m very late, but regardless you get way better service at Jaguar dealerships if anything were to go wrong. Sure, Jaguar hasn’t been known to make the most reliable gas/diesel cars, but EV’s are different. And when it comes to repairs, this is the better choice.
How can this "SUV" be as big as a model 3? 🤔
Then the model 3 is a SUV aswell
Zigis Jm can the Model 3 go off road?
@@edipires15 can this?
This thing is just a hatchback with an air suspension. It's worse than a Model 3 in every other way.
Yup עידן חסון
@@edipires15 A regular Subaru will destroy this pathetic hatchback off-road any day of the week, and it'd be probably be like 10x cheaper. This Jag SUV and all others like it are just toys for city soyboys and soccer moms with money.
Have a tesla model S so trying to be unbiased and welcome ev competition. This has a lot going for it in terms of performance and the fact that it's cheaper. But trade off is you don't have a supercharger network, has less cargo room than model S not even X, and tech wise you can definitely tell it's behind tesla which is disappointing considering this is coming out 4 years after X. Regardless optimistic for jag and the competition!
A 2013 Tesla P85 is more advanced than the top of the line mercedes that will come out two years from now...
The Jaguar is a lot better looking though, so if you want to look fly it is the EV to get.
Also the Jaguar has a much better interior than any Tesla.

Just ones that work
So Jaguar decided to print their name on the vent switches like anybody cares, but they put a sticker on the sides of the car? English people at their finest.
and look on which side of the road they drive, and how the coppers don'y have gubs.
What happens if the car is in an ice storm? I wonder if the door handles will pop out.
I think these vehicles are more suitable for warmer climates I suppose.
How do you enter the car when the door handles are covered by freezing rain?
You don't buy an electric car if you're some city dwelling peasant with no garage and have to keep it outside where you can't even charge it.
I thought the handle was dumb too looks like one of the first things to break
@@Adrian07z So I need to find a new winter chalet with a full garage to park my Jag in, because they designed it in a way which can't handle actual winter. Yeah, seems like a very clever design there.
@ It could handle my winter. Can't say the same thing of city dwelling peasants, though... Whatever, I don't really give a fuck, Tesla's better anyway...
Adrian right because us with garages don’t go out for supper and it rains and freezes while we are there...
Finally, an EV from a company that actually knows how to build cars and not fashion accessories. Even more to come from Audi and Porsche. Desirable, reliable, high-quality EVs. Good times ahead for the environment and automotive enthusiasts.
Weird seeing Jaguar and Reliable in one sentence
That is not an SUV that is a hatchback.

How is that still considered an suv and not a tall wagon???
AM D no transmission=more space
@@medogabr9952 It has the ride height, ground clearance, and roofline of a car though. And a transmission tunnel only affects the back middle passenger really. Not an issue for your common FWD car as well
Ikr, most of the "SUV" nowadays don't have enough ground clearance for Off-road use... which defeats the purpose of what an SUV is
@@RezaXGWB it has air suspension so it can really surprise you. My friend has a Cayman and he has an incredibly hard time getting into his garage as the slope is sharp. With this car I just raise the suspension and done.
@@youferrer it doesn't make it an SUV... adding 1 or 2 inch of ground clearance still doesn't make it off-road capable... if by adding an inch of ground clearance makes it off-road capable, then the new Ford GT is an SUV

antonthewall just because you own electric cars doesn’t mean you are in love with the environment some people just buy Tesla’s because the is almost ZERO maintenance and ( when you convert electricity to mpg) it drives at 70 MPG
I live in Luxembourg, and my father bought this model and I'm totally satisfied by the performance of the Jaguar I-Pace, and the price was 105 000€, approximately 118K US $, here a Tesla X are like at 147K US $.
The model x is a lot bigger than the I pace
The Model X created the electric SUV and if your even a little patriotic you buy the Tesla.
Well no sh*t Sherlock
And your point? Maybe some people don't want a massive SUV, maybe they want more of a hatchback. Jaguar is just filling the void that Tesla hasn't attempted to fill yet.
I've also heard the I-Pace is an "electron guzzler", very inefficient. It's got a big battery but it's range is worse than many other EVs that have smaller batteries. Or perhaps I should say not as much more as the battery size would suggest. Cause most other EVs have a lot smaller batteries. Think it has roughly the same range as a Hyundai Kona electric that has a 64kwh battery while the I-Pace has a 90kwh battery.
