Great video! I’m getting ready to remove a popcorn ceiling in my basement and replace with a knockdown texture. Question…do I need to prime the ceiling first? Or can I shoot the texture on heavy so it completely coats the ceiling then use the knockdown knife? Thanks!
Make sure you sand off any residual popcorn chunks and loose popcorn material to avoid dragging chunks through the finish Touch up any torn paper so it dont show through. Use a big tip for a heavy coat. Best wishes.
The best comment was about taking out those chunks that might drag through on the knockdown. Another observation was that you were outside on a sunny day and only needed to wait a few minutes for proper setup. I did this in an unventilated bathroom with about a 68-degree room temperature. The setup time took close to 25 minutes. Hint to first-timers: Forget what the box says on mud mixing. Start with a little bit of water and a little bit of powder and gradually work your way up to the necessary volume at the right consistency. (I had 30 s.f. to spray and made enough mud for 300 s.f. ) I know better now.

@@Handlehandlebars As the mud begins to dry, it will darken slightly in color. Wait just a few minutes longer, then test a small area. It's a guess, but you should catch on pretty fast.
@@Handlehandlebars test a small area. If you try to knock that part down too soon, you will just have a small area that is a bit too flat. You can come back later and touch up that texture. However, if you wait too long, you can't go back... it's gonna be dry and difficult to work with. So test it soon, like after 2 minutes. If its not ready, wait another minute, and test again in a different spot (so you aren't flattening out test spots all in the same area). Thats how I do my timing in Arizona. Other places you may not need to check until 15+ minutes. Depends on heat and humidity.
yes if it is prepped and ready meanining that the screws and seams are coated properly then yes you can spray it and knock it down. No need to prime or skim the full surface if the board is new. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions

So what's the best way to know when the texture is ready for knock down.?
