I believe that they were trying to just appeal more to a western audience by saying that it's not a jrpg and they were throwing around big games names to get more attention. At the end of the day the people in charge of getting interviewed are just trying to sell their game so I think that's why they said all of that haha.
I never liked that term “j-rpg” ever since whoever coined it 15-20 years ago.. Regional terms in general are beyond ridiculous being any game with any style under the sun could come from any region..
Thus I’ll just call Dragon Quest a classical rpg.. And I’ll call The Witcher a modern rpg.. Therefore no chance for oxymorons(my biggest pet peeve) like umm well Dragons Dogma a JRPG by definition but styled western.. Or Cosmic Star Heroine a western rpg with an eastern aesthetic..
That literally makes me wanna rip the hair out of my head!
