Episode 2 of House of the Dragon was titled the Rouge Prince and We got alot to chat about, Cuz seriously Viserys is dumb, he's just not a good king. In this video I will breakdown Episode 2 of House of the Dragon! In this episode I will review and explain House of the Dragon Episode 2. Lets look into House Targaryen at their peak! Crab feeder dude gave me more creeps in one shot than the night king in the finale, no lie.
The scene between Rhaenys and Rhaenyra was very reminiscent of The Hound and Sansa, and how he used to speak to her in an attempt to wake her up. There's a clip here on YT of Rory McCaan explaining that The Hound sees his cycle of abuse w/Gregor repeating w/Sansa and Joffrey, so he steps in to offer protection anyway he can to stop it. I think that's exactly what Rhaenys did. She saw a cycle repeating and intervened to stop it- her way of giving protection. I like that they made that connection because Rhaenys and The Hound are my favorite characters from their respective stories. That was cool.
I can see it but I find it closer to The Hound and Arya because The Hound tries to teach her a lot and she takes the advice while keeping her own views and talking back to him like Rhaenyra did

I totally agree, Sansa didn't get and was even frighten at first the Hound is not easy on the eye, either is the truth and the was what the "Queen that never was" was trying to tell Rhaenyra. Prepare yourself.....
@@shlokchamaria1785 I think you've misinterpreted my point. This is about recognizing a pattern that happened to you that's about to happen to someone else who's too naive to see it, and having to be jarring in order to snap them out of their naivety before it's too late. Arya was never blind to the way of the world; she was just alone in it and in need of physical protection.
Sansa on the other hand was totally blind to the danger she was in, which often led to her acting in ways that elevated said danger. Nobody stepped in to advise her to do otherwise. The Hound went through that growing up with Gregor, so he saw the signs and intervened the way nobody did for him so Sansa could help herself. It's literally the same with Rhaenys. Because of her experience having been passed over and knowing the nature of Kings, she could see that Rhaenyra was never going to be allowed to sit the throne. But Rhaenyra- like Sansa- was completely delusional about it and wanted to believe the fairytale that she would (despite having a fierce spirit). So Rhaenys intervened to speak sense into her.
Daemon is the biggest troll and seriously desperate for his big brother approval and attention. And I love that the same time, Viserys loves him and truly cares from him, constantly trying to keep him out of trouble. The whole scene in Dragonstone was FANTASTIC.
I love how Daemon wouldn’t let Corlys talk about his brother. I loved it!!
Whilst I loved the scene, why did the hand only take 15 men to take dragonstone?
Did he not know Daemon is a dragon rider? With a host of goldcloaks?

I like that they are showing that there are different types of Dragons. Like separate species with unique traits. Can’t wait to see more of them as the series goes on.

Otto also asked Criston to escort Rhaenyra to safety after she got off Syrax. He's consumed with making the most obvious, unnecessary, dangerous, and hilarious statements. All in one.
Rhaenyra is a boss, her idea of sending dragon riders would have been the best most prudent course of action. It's a fraction of the power of Westeros, a huge show of force and there would be no war. Who in their right mind would pick a fight against a united Westeros that has the fantasy equivalent of the death star? Tywin Lannister would have sent dragon riders
It was a bold but also reckless idea. If you send dragons, it means you have to commit to using them in case the intimidation strategy does not work and the Triarchy continues their aggression. Which would result into a bloody and highly destructive war.
It's the kind of plan that fits Rhaenyra, as she is bold and loves to take risks.
I love how Rhaenyra is the only one cutting through Daemon's bullshit. I don't know who hurt him but he clearly just wants to belong. I don't think he ever even wanted the throne, he just wanted to be accepted by his family and do his own thing, kinda like a mix between Arya and Oberyn
Otto understood it perfectly as well. But Otto didn't want Daemon to get reconciled with the king, he wants to be them as hostile as possible to each other, that's why he mostly seemed to try to anger Daemon and goad him into open rebellion.
I think Daemon really wants to protect his brother from the manipulations of the other houses. Seems to me, Daemon is really proud of his Targaryen decent. He seems more worried about keeping that lineage intact. He doesn’t want to have children with a none Targaryen. I am sure he was sad about the death of his baby nephew and the queen, because his family needs more heirs; more family to inter-marry in order for the Targaryens to continue for ages to come.
Alicent’s children are half Targaryan, diluted in Daemons’ eye. I don’t think he will feel loyalty for this side of the family.

people gotta stop comparing Otto to Tywin. Otto is more of a littlefinger than a Tywin. he creates chaos around and climbs up. he could potentially be more dangerous than Tywin though.
What makes the comparison to tywin legit is the focus on legacy and family, little finger plays on his own, for himself, to unknown ends while tywin and Otto share the goal of getting their family on the thrise by any means necessary

@@arianewinter4266 i don't really agree here. What family/house doesn't want to see their legacy prolonged? Its not really saying anything to make this comparison between Otto and Tywin. They are not alike at all. Tywin was a very strong and dangerous man because he was strong, cunning and very dangerous. His name and family wealth only enhanced that. Otto isn't really any of these things. You can see his plot at work a mile away. I don't find him cunning or powerful at all. You wouldn't see anyone stand up at a small council meeting and call Tywin the C word. I guarantee you that!
i completely agree, Samir. I have been saying from the start that Otto is more like Littlefinger....although i don't believe he is anywhere near as cunning.
@@BazookaIke I strongly disagree, Otto is really subtle and clever. For example, in the scene with the leeches where he discussed Viserys' potential marriage with Laena, which he obviously doesn't want to happen. After the grand maester gives a solid argument why marrying Laena is in the king's best interests, Otto actually agrees with that, because he knows the logic is impeccable.
But then he immediately finds another way to turn the king against marrying Laena, not through logical arguments but through emotional manipulation. He invokes his own wife and his grief over her, and tells the king "you must do this because you're the king and replace your wife, but as someone who just lost his own wife, I do not envy you."
By doing this, he reminds the king of his queen again and focuses on his personal dislike of the idea of 'replacing her', creating a negative association in the king's mind about a potential marriage to Laena and encouraging him to doubt it more. Focusing the king on his grief over his wife also aids the efforts of Alicent, who uses this grief to bond over with the king.
And he hides this entire agenda in a statement of sympathy for the king that on the surface seems very sincere, coming from a man who can empathize and relate with the king's pain due to having gone through a similar trauma himself recently.
I think that was absolutely brilliant, one of the scenes that made me adore his character.
@@frankvandorp2059 Otto is not that clever. People see what he is doing. It's not even subtle at all. Not on the level of Tywin, and should never be compared.

I kinda like the screechy roar. I think Caraxes has a different personality to drogon. So the sound kinda fits for me

I don't think Viserys is dumb. Naive yes he is, because he tries to avoid conflict too much. His only as good as his counsel, and he really should have kept Daemon close. He probably would been a better ambassador than a king.

That's it. Daemon should have been hand. Or given a special position on the council such as 'Master of the KINGS Dragons'. Viserys is special in that he is the first Targ king who does not ride a dragon. It would be OK if Viserys had a dragon rider champion such as Damon. What Damon wanted was to be needed by his brother.
No Viserys is definitely dumb. Made terrible decisions, helped sow the seeds of the dance of dragons.
I just finished watching Ep 2 a second time. Is Viserys dumber than rocks? 🤣 He got a second opinion from Ser Lyonel Strong privately. He pushed for Laena. Viserys still didn't listen! 🤣
Yeah, we know Laena is only 12. But what was Lyonel's response? She'll mature. Is Laena planning to stay 12 forever? And marriages back then were mostly business transactions. Love wasn't required. It's too create stronger partnerships.
Viserys rejected the richest House in all of the realm. Unreal. All because Alicent gave him a statue and she's been chatting with him for 6 months. Father and best friend backstabbed Rhaenyra and her mother has only been dead for half a year.
Damn you, Viserys! You screwed up. Name Rhaenyra as your heir. Then forget about it. Then be pressured to remarry. Then pick the wrong person. He should've picked the 12-year-old! Oh, well. She'll grow up, ride the largest she-dragon ever, and marry someone more Chad than Viserys ever was.
If Viserys isn't dumb, he just made the dumbest decision he's ever made by picking Alicent as his next queen. But I guess we need characters like him to make mistakes to serve a story. If no mistakes, no story. No leading to any conflicts.

Regarding Caraxes' voice - I saw on the New Rockstars breakdown that the sound design editor based his voice off baby Drogon noises and designed his voice to sound like he had a deviated septum. Also, Miguel Spaochink said that Caraxes is "always hitting on the lady dragons. He tries to sing a new lovesick rap song that he wrote for Syrax." - I thought you'd get a kick out out of that, lol. Fantastic breakdown as always - thanks for all the hard work you do putting these together! 🙂
I also saw that New Rockstars breakdown but Erik doesn't break ASOIAF as deep as Gray. They missed a few intricate detes like the whole Mysaria being preggers thing

Yeah, I don't think Otto is clever, the king is just weak and gullible like Daemon said in episode 1. Otto is no Tywin Lannister or Littlefinger, he's a weak con artist second son with no claim to nothing that pimps out his under age daughter. If the king is stupid enough to be manipulated by him and his boring daughter, he deserves it. The king actually sent Otto to dragonstone rather than go himself when he knew Daemon would not harm his brother but would likely kill Otto. What a foolish king....being one not his best trait as Daemon also said.

Another solid take on the episode Gray 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾. I think there will be more conflict between Otto and Rhaenyra moving forward. I always wondered why he even suggested naming Rhaenyra heir if he knew he was scheming to crown Alicent and it’s clear he didn’t ever expect Rhaenyra to be a serious contender as a ruler. And I think Alicent’s scenes are meant to be quiet to compliment her fragility. They’re making her sympathetic as possible so people will still root for her even as she transforms into a merciless schemer.
Because he was scared Daemon might kill Viserys and take the throne with Rhaenyra there it acts as a buffer

I get that she wants the best for her kids, but sitting on the Iron throne is not really the best for them🤣 thats just being power hungry , but i guess we will see how she will be written for the show
He suggested that for multiple reasons. The main reason is simply because he wants to deepen the rift between Viserys and Daemon, and having the king openly scorn Daemon goes a long way towards achieving that. Secondly, although he is scheming to have Alicent marry Viserys, he would be a fool if he didn't have a backup plan in case that plan were to fail. And if Alicent would not succeed, or if she would but does not provide the king with sons, then Otto would have no choice but to choose between Rhaenyra and Daemon, and in that case he obviously is better off with Rhaenyra.
And at that point, he probably doesn't know yet to what degree he could manipulate Rhaenyra like he manipulates Viserys, but he does know he could never manipulate Daemon and lose his entire position if he were king. So convincing the king to declare Rhaenyra heir helped his schemes in multiple ways.
And so far, I don't think they're making anyone more "sympathetic". The characters in this series are all meant to be quite complex and morally grey, so if you expected some kind of good vs. evil narrative with Rhaenyra being the good one and Alicent the evil one, you're certainly going to be very disappointed because GRRM doesn't do black and white characterization like that.
@@DonHbankz I would think someone as “smart” as him could get Daemon out of the way without jeopardizing his long term goals is what I’m saying. It wasn’t smart but I guess that’s me speaking with the benefit of hindsight.

Viserys has been a bad person since Emma's death. Dude gave the order for his wife to die painfully. Viserys couldn't even tell his wife the truth.
Only way that c-section is OK is if Emma consents!!
@@BillyBasd I didn’t understand why they included that scene. That did not happen in the books. His wife had a hard pregnancy and died but he was not forced to choose between her and the child in the books.
I think the show runners are trying to make Viserys look bad for some reason? Not sure he needs help to look bad, there are plenty of dumb decisions he makes later on that makes him look bad on his own.

@@LegendInThaMakin the choice wasn't between the wife or the child the master literally told him ether save the kid or they both die the queen was dying regardless , and honestly as fucked up as it is I don't think him telling her would make a difference like what is he gonna say ? " hey so there gonna have to kill you to get the baby out " she's gonna think he's killing her for a child and won't believe him that it's the only way and resist just like she ends up doing anyway .
@@LegendInThaMakin The books this show is based on aren't meant to be 1:1 purely what happened, they're basically in universe history books written by maesters, who both don't know everything that happened and have reasons to massage the truth. The show sets out to show the "true" series of events.
Also tbh I liked that they turned what was pretty dry in the book into this huge, character defining moment with Viserys showing his true allegiance to the backward system that put him in place
@@BillyBasd He had the choice to either let both die, or to save the child. So he chose to save the one life that still could be saved. That choice is entirely justifiable.
The only dubious decision there is to not tell her, although it's unlikely she was able to give informed consent on anything in the state she was in.

but yes Viserys is sooo easily manipulated and weak king , thats one thing that Daemon was right about and remember Rhaenyra didnt meant to use dragons in Stepstones she just meant to show their strenght...shoiwing that you own a dragon is already scary enough , right now I am liking Rhaenyra very much , she is very clever
But yiu can also see how spoiled she is, so her parents basicly set her up for failure long before all this🤣😅
But showing dragons to the stepstones by itself creates a risk of having to use them, because if the enemy decides to gamble that you're bluffing and they continue their aggression anyway, you either respond by using the dragons, or you respond by not using them and looking even weaker and less of a threat. Once you made a threat, you must be willing to go through with it.
So it absolutely is a very risky idea by Rhaenyra, which fits how she is presented in this show and seems to be in the books as well: she's bold and charismatic, but also reckless and impulsive. A lot like Daemon.
Your nuanced take on these episodes really sets you apart from everyone else’s breakdown. I’m loving it and here for the juice!!!
