Hi! I just discovered a really neat trick to get the case open without any effort whatsoever, and without damaging plastics: Use the VESA mount. If you have your VESA mount and hardware, screw the two mounting screws into the unpopulated screw holes, hang the unit onto the VESA mount, and pull. A gentle pull got me right in.
ChromeBoxes which have two "printed" and "stuffed" SO-DIMM slots are upgradable to 16 GB in the two slots. ChromeBoxes which have one "printed" and "stuffed" SO-DIMM slot are upgradable to 8 GB in the one slot. The Intel 2955U processor supports 16 GB RAM, maximum, in any "reasonable" combination of PC3L-12800S RAM sticks.
By definition, PC3L-12800S is 1.35 volts, and this is a requirement for the Haswell chip. Pre-Haswell chips ... some of them, anyway ... can support PC3-12800 (1.5 volts) or PC3L-12800S.
PLEASE HELP!?? i have this and there is the stupid screw on the ssd that is about to stripped when trying to remove to upgrade the ssd!!?? HOW THE HECK DO I GET IT OUT WITHOUT STRIPPING THE SCREW!!??? i don't even have this size screw driver tip!!???😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Don't forget to remove the write protect screw while you're in there so that after the lame Google AUE policy ends, you can update with Brunchbook script and MrChromebox firmware. :D
Great video, thanks for posting. I was wondering if you have had any experience with the new asus chromebox2 g016u with the newer 5th generation 3205u celeron processor. can't seem to find much info on it. I'm looking to purchase a chrome box but am wondering with a 50 dollar price difference whether to get the new chromebox2. The original being 150 dollars and the chromebox 2 being 200. Just wondering if the newer processor is worth the extra 50 dollars. Figured I'd ask in case you had come across any info, Thanks. Also, with CES2016 around the corner I'll probably wait and see what is announced there before making a purchase.
Provided you find an NGFF M.2 SSD that is the same physical length as the existing drive, this shouldn't be a problem. I have a video coming soon to my channel which will show you how to do this.
***** That's not true. You can't just stick 1.5V RAM in and expect to operate at only 1.35V. You have to check online (if there is a manual) for what RAM is compatible and I would strongly recommend checking the RAM you are buying is 1.35V
Asus Chromebox CN60 and Chromebox MU075U with Intel Core i3 motherboard supports 1.5V RAM, but I suggest 1.35v RAM. You can also use the latter one on your Chromebook.
Hi @ Liliputing - Where to locate Hardware right-protected screw in it? I want to install Window 10 on it and it says Hardware right-protected and enabled, cannot flash full ROM Firmware. Can you help me?
so then if I upgrade 8gb ram and install cruton to run Linux then install VirtualBox and install android virtual box would be able to run android apps?
hello, i have a questing maybe dumb question but still going to ask i just installed g.skill 4gb memory card as additionto original 2gb but i did reswap places put new one where i had original 2gb and original 2gb i put into empty slot i was wondering if its going to slow down my chromebox it felt bit slower or it's just me and my expectation well question is if it makes any difference re swapping original 2gb ram with new 4gb ram tnx
You'll need to make sure that the NGFF SSD you buy is the same length as the one you're replacing. 256 GB is definitely available in this form factor... maybe higher.
I'm interested in getting a chromebox to replace my laptop from 2006, I can see from the video this thing can get an upgrade in RAM and the SSD but what about video cards for maybe video games? can it run windows seven? how hard is it to replace the operating system in terms of novice level computer skills? would it be more cost effective to just build a custom PC? also could I remove chrome OS and dual boot with ubuntu and windows easily or would that be too much for this guy?
Dont pry with a screwdriver to open, put in the two screws for the mounting bracket, that will give you something on the bottom to hold on to and makes it very easy to pop the bottom out. I just put in 2x8 gb Crucial DDR3 (1.35v) and it works like a charm :) www.crucial.com/usa/en/ct102464bf160b
If the specific model has two SO-DIMM slots, the maximum is 16 GB RAM in 2 x 8 GB SO-DIMM sticks, and the maximum SSD is, presently, 512 GB in one M.2 42mm stick. Chromebooks should be purchased with no expectation of performing a RAM upgrade as most have two banks of soldered PC3L-12800S chips, either 2 chips on one side and 2 on the other side, for a total of 2 GB RAM, or 4 chips on one side and 4 on the other for a total of 4 GB RAM. Chromeboxes should be purchased with the expectation that there is one SO-DIMM slot for Celeron models (8 GB maximum) and two SO-DIMM slots for Core i models (16 GB maximum). Many models come as either 16 GB SSD or, optionally, as 32 GB SSD, and for those with M.2 SSDs, an upgrade to 512 GB is certainly possible, although 256 GB or 128 GB SSD is probably more reasonable. But, some models have gone to soldered eMMC SSDs, which limits one's upgrade options. And, many WiFi/BT cards are now being soldered, too. You will need a PH1 and a PH0 driver for many upgrades.
the way you handle these components with bare hands will one day damage something... Otherwise, thanks for showing the internals of my new chromebox even before i received it :)
You'll need to flash some custom firmware onto the device, then you'll be able to install windows. I have a video showing you how to do this on my channel. Good luck!
I like when companies make things easy to work on.
not all the time!! they made this screw in the ssd soooo difficult that when trying to upgrade the ssd gets stripped and your pretty much done for!!!!
For those of you wondering, the processor is not upgradable for it is a part of the motherboard itself.

The Asus Chromebox just got a lot more interesting. This is how easily you can upgrade the RAM or SSD.
How do you transfer Chrome OS onto the new ssd?
create a chrome recovery usb beforehand
Mine wouldn't load Chrome OS from recovery drive... any tips?

the ssd is 42mm long, correct. will all ssd heights work?
So these are those NUCs without the 2.5" format that Intel wanted to get rid off?
If you change the ssd, how do you get the OS back on it?
Can you add a second MSATA SSD in place of the wifi card? I plan to have this plugged into Ethernet the whole time.
Good question. See my video "Extra SSD for a NUC or Laptop" for answers to this question ;)
how can i install new OS on new ssd card? I wanna mod the chromebox to not use chromeOS... any help? or ideas?
Do you have short video on opening Chromebox 4. Is the process same as what you have in this video
Do you know how to upgrade the ssd to a 500 bg hard drive ? Adopters ?
Provided you find an NGFF M.2 SSD that is the same physical length as the existing drive, this shouldn't be a problem. I have a video coming soon to my channel which will show you how to do this.
An easy way to pull it out is to use 2 out of those 4 screws and screw the middle. Pull it out easily!
Thanks for this peek inside.
can it's 802.11n wireless card be upgraded to 802.11 ac ?
How do you put WIN11PRO on a chromebox?
Is there any free sata ports on the motherboard?
This is begging for upgrading, only got to wait till the UK gets it
Is it possible to upgrade the PCI express card for 802.11ac?
wifi bt card is replaceable
What type of RAM is used in it? I didn't catch it.
***** Will regular 1.5v RAM work or it has to use 1.35v modules?

Liliputing - Thank you for Sharing 👍👍😎👍👍
Hi @
Liliputing - Where to locate Hardware right-protected screw in it? I want to install Window 10 on it and it says Hardware right-protected and enabled, cannot flash full ROM Firmware.
Can you help me?
Or will it work if I replace the SSD?
I believe it is the screw in the corner of the board with a little white arrow pointing to it.
Question can you add a touch screen monitor to it ?
How did this work with external WD storage or cloud storage?
Awesome, thank you!!
Where did you get the Chrome OS Keyboard from?
Is that an M.2 SSD or a proprietary connector? It doesn't look like an M Sata slot.
Search "M2 42mm"
It is a generic B+M-type M.2 SSD connector, which supports, mainly, SATA-III (6 mb/sec) access to the SSD itself.
Is this or the HP J5N50UT one better? I might find one for cheap and try to get POP OS on it
I had the HP and while it was ok, for heavy 4k graphics and multitasking, you want intel core
What kind of hdd use this computer? I want to upgrade My hdd
so then if I upgrade 8gb ram and install cruton to run Linux then install VirtualBox and install android virtual box would be able to run android apps?
its looks so similar to an intel nuc
Thank You!
It basically is a nuc.

Mars Kvaratskhelia Hey you have to make sure the RAM stick is DDR3L (L for low voltage) PC3L RAM sticks will work
Tnx man
Does it have nvme ssd or normal ssd
How to Have it run other Programs ?
what kind of ram does it take?! laptop size?!
Yep, DDR3 sodimms.
Any idea what the max ram size and speed the board can handle?
Chromebox what? You're forgetting mention which version
Anyone have link to amazon of the ram for this?
how does the cpu look like?
What is the maximum the SSD can be upgraded to?
You'll need to make sure that the NGFF SSD you buy is the same length as the one you're replacing. 256 GB is definitely available in this form factor... maybe higher.
Where to buy the Ram Stick's at ???
PC3 sodimm... easy to find on eBay ;)
Helpful. Thank you.
Do you have the spec for the storage
It's an NGFF M.2 SSD. These come in different lengths, so be sure that you get one that matches the length of your existing one.
Can you install UBUNTU on an external hard drive?
You can even Windows on it, works perfectly.
Thanks.
I believe you put the WiFi card in upside down!
very useful... no fans inside... that's all i wanted to know ^^

Just get a normal pc if you want to do games. Graphics processing is too slow for games from this century.
Use rubber tubing to hold the screws on the screw driver.
what about hard drive?
It's an M.2 NGFF SSD.
@@danimationstips
thank you!
So it is possible to install another OS in this? Can I install MAC OSX Mavericks?
Mau PS Yes, you Mac loser
Nice
Yep.
what about upgrading CPU to i3-7? what can be done?
Any laptop ram is suitable right.. Also where you get the screwdriver and what's the name of it!
not sure if every single type of laptop ram will work, but the screwdriver is phillips head or + shaped
PC3L DDR4 memory
Is the processor an ARM one? For the SSD if I upgrade it can I install windows 8?
awesome
Is it possible to upgrade the processor?
I am wondering the same thing. Anyone?
Timothy Ericson Its not.
Buy the i3 model instead

so funny how people want to run inferior win or mac garbage. chrome os is the winna
I have this one But I Don't Like it Because it Doesn't Support GOOGLE PLAY 😭😭
checkout mrchromebox
Good vocal fry
the way you handle these components with bare hands will one day damage something... Otherwise, thanks for showing the internals of my new chromebox even before i received it :)
How does it run other Operating Systems ???
You'll need to remove a write protection screw, then flash some custom firmware onto it. I made a video showing you how to do this on my channel. :)
Can you change the OS to windows?
Any update regarding windows support?
You'll need to flash some custom firmware onto the device, then you'll be able to install windows. I have a video showing you how to do this on my channel. Good luck!
Put Windows 8 on this, and it might make an excellent HTPC for the living room.
CosmicKoala really? i can have windows8?
dont really need it, but good to know it just in case..
demasiado caro con eso aquí una laptop core i5 de sexta generación a ese precio
Epic fail......you neglected to mention hardware upgrade lock screws that need to be removed.
I've just opened up my Chromebox using this guide.
I see no hardware lock screws.
But I am searching for the battery - WHERE IS IT ???
First
The vocal fry makes this hard to listen to.
Can you install 2.5" HDD?
