I did exactly as you said. And it worked well. Instead of two 4 *2 cards I purchased 8 gb card and placed it with the existing 2gb (cos I did not want to trash it). Hence I managed to get 10gb. Furthermore the 8gb single costs less than two 4gb. Thank you very much for this video. I appreciate it.
Hi ,, Also curious ( if you can remember ) what manufacturer of 8GB memory ,,,, and did you place it in the 1st ( close to middle of box ) slot ,, or 2nd ( near outside of unit ) slot ? .... or does it make a difference ? Thanks .
Ken Langston The Chromebox needs 1.35 volt memory, also noted as DDR3L - the "L" standing for low voltage. Anything other than the low voltage memory will not work correctly. I can pm you a link if you'd like with what I purchased, or available options.
More often this is labeled as PC3L (the 1.35V memory). Ken, the PC3L and the speed 12800S (aka DDR3-1600 SODIMM) are the most important numbers. The S is for SODIMM (notebook type memory), but sometimes you'll see just 12800. Also best if the 2 modules are identical.
Hoping to see a follow up on your ram update on the Asus Chromebox. How did it go, did the Chromebox accept two sticks of 4GB of DDR3L ram? Im going to buy the Asus Chromebox and was just looking for the update. Thanks for the previous video. Vinny
Great video ..... But As others have pointed out, you must use low power memory (DDR3L) or chromebox will not boot. Further and even more concerning.... when I called Asus for help they told me that the unit is not upgradeable and I voided my warranty. IMHO still worth the risk but you should know the risks going in. Returning memory and have ordered DDR3L. I will post results when it arrives
Thanks for your comment Barry! As with most low power machines, this box indeed requires DDR3L memory. I noted this in the description and the links included to memory that is compatible is DDR3L. These boxes fly with upgraded memory that can be picked up fairly cheap. I hope it works as expected for you! Feel free to update once you install it! I've had video for about 3 months but have been too busy to put it together lately. I have a long weekend coming up and plan on editing, exporting and uploading 1-2 videos with some luck.
Thanks for the reply Brian. I did return memory for low power DDR3L which I installed and works flawlessly. Next project is upgrading SSD. Couldn't have done this without your tutorial! Thanks again
@mmanut I've taken a bunch of screen caps and have all the footage, but I've been stuck working too much overtime to get it together as fast as I had wanted. I'm hoping to actually take a day this week and get out of work to complete this. It does accept the 2x4gb ddr3l sticks of memory just fine. the machine identifies it and allocates it as needed. I have yet to really fill it up in everyday use with 20 tabs and 2 screens open.
Brian McLaughlin i have a questing maybe dumb question but still going to ask i just installed g.skill 4gb memory card as additionto original 2gb but i did reswap places put new one where i had original 2gb and original 2gb i put into empty slot i was wondering if its going to slow down my chromebox it felt bit slopwer or it's just me and my expectation well question is if it makes any difference re swapping original 2gb ram with new 4gb ram tnx
Mars Kvaratskhelia I did see a noticeable boot difference and a huge difference when streaming music while having 10 or so tabs open after I added the memory. You can pull the 4GB stick out and try again, but that was the biggest difference. I also noticed much less lag time when switching tabs, as it was able to swap very quickly between tabs instead of a second or two swap time. You can also confirm the box is using the memory by opening a new tab, typing Chrome://System then scrolling down to memory_speed_info, and looking at size_mb. It should show just over 6,000MB or 6GB for your memory if you have a 4GB+2GB stick installed and it is recognized. Let me know, I'll be happy to walk you through it sometime if needed.
Thnx i did re swap then again from your respond looks Like It was Better to leave it and have new 4gb on original 2gb slot going to swap again if it's faster because to be true it's kinda falls behind after few windows I did check meminfo it is 6+ gb mem Should I re swap again? What you suggest ? Tnx
Having trouble finding similar memory. I plan to order the i3 version coming out tomorrow. Which of these numbers are critical: 4GB (yes) 1Rx8 (I see a lot more 2Rx8) PC3L 12800S PB NO AA | Thanks!
+shannon k Thanks for the feedback. I will try next time to go a little slower and be more precise with how I show it. Do you have any questions about how to do it? I still have the Chromebox I can show you something if it was unclear in my video!
Hi David - Yes you can bump this to 16gb. amzn.to/3dvQhMM should be in stock, and fit the request. It is a LOT cheaper than it was a couple years back.
AFAIK the only Linux distro that can be installed on Chromebook is Ubuntu. You need to either run a special ChrUbuntu version or run Ubuntu on top of Chrome OS using Crouton. You'll have to put it in developer mode to get there. Both are buggy, but Crouton is supposed to be better as it uses the native Chrome OS drivers. The BIOS on Chromebook is incompatible with any other OS for now (and probably for always).
Hey Frank! The maximum it can handle is 16GB, but I wouldn't go higher than 10-12 as it will likely be wasted due to other bottlenecks on the system of this spec. 8 should be plenty for most people, and 10-12 would be really good. It just depends on the price you can find the ram at. Thanks for the question!
Hey Aquakey. I'm not sure if it can be upgrade. Usually I wind up keeping it hardwired. I'll see if I have an extra card around that I can swap in. I would be concerned about driver support.. But if I take one out of one of my other chromebooks, that might be a good way to make sure it is supported.
Mine is 2Gb. I am guessing it will have one slot of 2gb filled. Can I add a 4gb to get 6gb total? I mean the 2 slots don't need to be filled symmetrically?
Thanks for the comment Angela Henderson, These can hold up to 16gb total, but that is overkill for these low power machines. I would say 6GB(4+2) or 8GB(4+4) gave me the biggest improvement overall for the price.
+Rob Hirschhorn I did notice a small improvement when streaming music + having 10-20 tabs open. With 6 i could get music and about 15-16 tabs open with no hit in performance in switching tabs. If i opened 20, it would not cache the tab and have to fully reload the page. With 8gb of memory, it switched no problem between all the tabs. If you're only in 5-10 tabs you should be fine with 6. If you're on a tight budget, using 6gb would be fine, if you push it to the limits and have the $$ 8 is great!
+Brian McLaughlin Thanks for your feedback! I actually jumped all in for an added 8gb chip. With the original 2gb chip this boosted me to 10gb total and I am enjoying vast tab freedom and quickness now!
Thanks for doing this - just what I needed to see. Nice camera work and great explanation.

What 8GB RAM did you buy? Thx

I wanna try run 16
16 should run, but I doubt you'll notice much improvement over 12GB or so. Either way it's pretty quick once it gets to be over 8GB!
You shouldn't have to worry about which slot they go in. You should be just fine.

Boy, I wish I had seen this comment a few days ago. About to return memory to Amazon and hope they take it.
Great, it's useful.

Do you mind sending me a pm with what 2 x 4gb sticks u used. The link u provided says nothing is there. Thank you
How do you see if both sticks of RAM are working?

Do you have a link (preferably Amazon) of the memory modules? I just got one of these boxes and I love it but it's kind of laggy.

Mars Kvaratskhelia Awesome! Glad its finally performing as expected. Enjoy!!

nice job. next time maybe go a little slower, and let the camera see exactly what you're doing with your hands. :)

after some trial & error i'm ok. thanks for asking.
Can i max this to 16gb memory and do you have the amazon links for the ram?

Thanks for Posting ,, though old ,, I think Google is going to support these box's for another year or 2 .
What is the maximum amount of ram that I can install and is there any practical value of it exceeding 8gb?
Hey Frank! Off topic, please forgive me, but do you know if this chromebox supports Android Apps?

That is correct. As long as it is ddr3l memory, it will work in that configuration.
