    One of the big upsides of the Framework Laptop Chromebook Edition is the ease of upgrades and/or repairs. With a truly modular build, this Chromebook does what no other can: it makes opening and working on your laptop a breeze.
    To put this to the test, I wanted to attempt a RAM upgrade on our review unit without any setup, testing, or practice whatsoever. We had a RAM chip sitting around and with all I’ve seen about the Framework laptops in the past few months, I wagered that dropping in a bit of extra RAM would be quite simple. Spoiler alert: it really was.

    I dont think attaching the other end of your Anti-Static Wristband to your laptop will ground you. It needs to have an electrical path to the ground

    • @mwclarke
      @mwclarke Год назад +4

      This! I was saying the same to myself. The chromebook will have rubber feet on, so there is zero grounding going on 🤦

      Also, Robbie pokes at the open electronics before attaching the grounding strap. Absolutely pointless. I appreciate the good intent, but please, if you're going to demonstrate a principle, do it correctly!

      It's a good practice, but I've never ever experienced static discharge working on a laptop. I think you'd have to go rub yourself all over with a wool blanket or something.

      What is important is to put yourself at the same potential as the circuit ground. Did he connect it to a plastic case or was it touching the circuit ground? Can't tell from the video. You don't need an earth ground.

    I like the concept, I was going to buy one and then I realised it didn't have a touch screen which for me is an essential requirement for a Chromebook, especially if you are using Android apps.

      Idk. For Chromebook I don't use touch I just use a really good mouse and I even had a handheld keyboard with build in mouse and works fine. Everything I personally need touch for is on my windows computer. Or I use one of my tablets. 😅

    I'm glad they finally made an upgrabeable Chromebook! I was tasked with expanding the memory of a Chrome book a few weeks back, only to find the RAM and Hard drive were soldered in...it was such a beautiful computer...though was made redundant by googles "this is to old to update any further, please buy a new one" policy...I like what this company is doing.

    I upgraded hdd 1TB to cheap ssd 128gb (enought for chrome os) and ram from 4 to 8gb because I have just 1 slot , on my old 9 years lenovo g50-30 , installed chrome os flex , bought new battery , clean vent , all cheaper budget chinese parts included New battery cost 50€ , all work perfect now better than new . I wish could play clash of clans and missing some android apps on it 😁 yes I can install fyde os but google ecosystem I prioritise over some apps . I don't think I could buy anything better new for €50. The cheapest Chromebook costs €200. It's like stuffing steroids into a 70 year old guy 😂

    Why on earth the laptop has only 5 GB of RAM left if he upgraded with another 8GB of RAM? According to the screen the laptop has 12GB of RAM and 5GB of RAM remaining to be used and on top of that there wasn't any app opened? Can someone explain me why the chrome OS uses so much RAM out of the box? Thanks

    So the base price is 963 and you only get 4 slots 🤔 this is a great concept but terrible execution. And it's not touchscreen. I know he's enthusiastic about this but if you value your audience you tell them the truth this is to damn expensive and it's terrible value for dollar. The Acer spin 713 has alot more ports and touchscreen and I got it on sale for 529 that was a sale price never ever buy msrp always but things at a sale. And the new acer spin 714 it's pretty damn good and cheaper and has more plus a stylus . It's like the pixel watch top damn expensive and it's OK but it will take time before the newer iterations lower the price and still offer better value .

    • @AndersHass
      @AndersHass Год назад +1

      This video isn’t a review but purely just to showcase how to do a RAM upgrade.
      In the unboxing video he does talk about not having touchscreen and other laptops have more ports.
      At this price point you might as well go with the Windows version.
      To the defense of the ports you can configure it to what you want, so it could be less cluttered having a bunch of ports you don’t use or having to have a dungle.
      The point of Framework laptops are full modularity and thereby have great repairability and potential upgradability. So if you don’t care about those things then better to get something where you’ll get more for your money.

      @cobaltblue5523 Год назад

      @@AndersHass I understand that the framework is main purpose is just for you customization and to change any broken part or anything that's given any issues out quickly little to no issues or with no technician and I guess this is what is this Is this the first or second iteration so in due time it will be more accessible more economic and it'll look far better this is like comparing the Nintendo DS that's what this the stage is now the original Nintendo DS the brick to the Nintendo like DS lite and then the Nintendo DSi Right now it's in that that first stage and it's it's just bulky it's clunky and it looks honestly just dated but for that price The funny thing is yes as time goes on everything is far cheaper so at this point in time I wouldn't recommend this to pretty much anyone because the general populace just wants something that works good good price and performance ratio so for them in terms of a Chromebook like I said I'd recommend the Acer it's on sale now the Acer spin 714 it's only $499 at Best buy I already ordered mine and it has a ton of ports ton of power for Chromebook this is I mean if you want to get really expensive then yes you can get more power but in terms of a Chromebook I personally think you don't need anything more than i3 unless you're like a content creator or something then yeah an I-5 is more than enough in a Chromebook specifically but like you stated at this price yes I had much rather recommend Windows laptop it depends on what you're using what you need or a MacBook Air because a MacBook Air is like 900 to $1,000 that with the m1 chip the very first generation still an incredible laptop fast great battery life performance is crazy you'll be stuck in that ecosystem but whatever and this is coming from a guy they know hates Apple so at that price no thank you I don't recommend this to pretty much anybody and if it's for like you know the general population the general audience or whatever you want to call it like a Lenovo flex 5 I with a i3 processor 8 GB of RAM is $2.99 and it still has more ports in this thing It has a touch screen it's it's it's flex so it spins 360 it's just not that great yet it in concept it's cool you know kind of like the you know when 5G phones started coming out they were expensive they're way more expensive than regular phones and it's like wow that's stupid because nobody's in concept wow so much more better speed but there's hardly any freaking what is it I don't know what to call it there's no 5G antennas or 5G satellites that are in your area sorry antennas so unless you get to like really next to one then it then it works as it's intended to but if I move away from it too much then it's s*** then you switch back to 4G automatically anyway so yeah you can configure this into any way you want only four ports total that's that's okay I guess it's honestly better than you know $1,000 MacBook which only has two boards you know but like I said check out the Chromebook 713 it has all the ports it's insane the 714 has all the ports however they removed the microSD card slot down which I didn't use I thought I would use it but you know the internal storage is already 256 so I didn't need to another thing to note is when it comes to Chromebook for the general audience you don't need much to be honest I've tested these things out

    • @cobaltblue5523

      @@AndersHass I've tested these things out and low end Chromebook which my first one was the Acer 3:15 it only had an n4020 processor with 4 GB of RAM that's Intel Celeron and that's for Windows that's terrible terrible terrible terrible however on a Chromebook well it was great battery life was great The performance was good this thing was 320 original price 15.6 in touch screen IPS full HD that's better than you see on freaking Windows laptops at that price okay and the speakers were better right now get into it so before that I got an Acer aspire 5 which had 4 GB of RAM and an Intel core i3 10th gen processor It also had what was it I think it was 15.6 in regular screen so no touch screen It was also IPS and it looked washed out The performance was terrible the battery life was only wrong maybe 4 to 5 hours and I was only using Wi-Fi just doing RUclips Google docs Google sheets nothing hard nothing intense nothing died quick It was sad and the speakers were just terrible but in comparison to the Chromebook the Chromebook around ran circles around this damn i3 processor The battery life was around 10 to 12 hours and that's with me blasting RUclips and you know just putting it aside and putting RUclips on 1080p with Wi-Fi on of course because you need Wi-Fi Play RUclips and it was incredible I was like wow this is ridiculous I did everything I needed to on the Chromebook running my business and I used me in the Facebook and Instagram to run my business and you know the business suite and all that other crap anyways that's great but yeah if you do get a Windows laptop I recommend an I-5 processor minimum with a gigabytes of RAM 11th gen or 12th gen would be fine but when you get into that price range it's you know it's high it's far higher than a Chromebook would be with lower specs but in that price range you'll get a higher spec Chromebook which will run even more circles around that I don't know
