    Creating Beams of Light
    Here is some great insight on creating beams of light in photoshop. Check it out.
    Working With Layers
    The key to getting a beam of light to look realistic is using multiple layers while creating it. A beam of light will be most intense in the center of the beam, so by making three different curves layers that get smaller and smaller it gives the light a sense of depth. It’s also important to apply a gaussian blur to the layer masks so the light doesn’t look unreasonably hard edged.
    Adding Fog
    The second part to making the beam of light believable is adding fog to the image. The only way a beam of light can really be visible is if there are many small particles in the air for it to reflect off of. By using a combination of adjustment layers and Filter - Clouds, we can create a texture around the light that gives the illusion of a foggy day.

    you made the top right corner of the beam brighter. but gravity pulls most of the fog down, so it should get dimmer the higher the light is and brighter towards the floor, as there are more particles near the floor to reflect the light. thanks for the tutorial.

    The beam of light should not illuminate the trees in the background considering the distance of the trees to the subject.

      Stevan Lohja both are you are wrong if your looking from that point of view the beam of light should not stop it should look like there is a beam on the back tree im 16 and i know this lol

    • @sid42000
      @sid42000 9 лет назад +14

      Stevan Lohja
      I agree. What actually should make the beam look like a beam are not the objects in the background but rather particles of dust being hit by the light beam. I suppose this could be done by working with more layers.
      @Justin
      That's wrong. Objects that are not being hit by the light beam should obviously not reflect that light. Next time you're outside during nighttime check out car lights. That's probably the best proof for that. You can only see stuff that's being hit by the light, nothing else.

    Apparently if you use curves then there is nothing around it, or as far as I have tried, but the same effect is achieved by creating a new layer, creating a selection using the polygonal lasso tool and filling the layer with a gradient from white to transparent, and then finally creating a blur.
    Thumbs up for solution.

      +Phlearn Photoshop and Photography Tutorials Hello! Nice video btw! Uhm I have an issue and I hope you could answer me when you get a chance, anyway. The issue is I keep on getting horizontal lines from top to bottom of the screen after I apply a lighting effect... Do you know why this is happening? All I simply do is filter- render-lighting effects- style default, light type spotlight... Thank you in advance!

  • @Pigletpuff15
    @Pigletpuff15 10 лет назад +1

    Anyone else think the effect was negated by the ultra-unrealistic "fog" addition? Also, deviant art has some nice fog brush sets. Perhaps that would have given you a better effect?

    Real nice. Now that I've been staring at it for this 10+ minutes though, one thing bothers me: The beam shouldn't be lighting the trees up like that on the top right section of the image, the trees should be underexposed and the rays of light should be illuminating just the fog that it's going through.

    Hi Phlearn, I am in no way a Photographer. I am wanting to learn how to photoshop family photos to improve or enhance them. I have viewed a few of your tutorials but struggle with them. The reason being is because you seem to have real basic photos that you use as an example. For instance clone stamping.... making unwanted items disappear off a photo, you have a real basic easy photo to work with but you don't show how to do it with a more detailed photo. I have noticed that you do this with a few of your tutorials including the one above.
    This is just my feedback and in no way any criticism.
    On a positive note, you have a great teaching voice and I love how you explain things step by step as you go and the reasons for doing them.

    • @seattlejade3983
      @seattlejade3983 8 лет назад +1

      +Sally Rickard I have also noticed this and it doesn't help me learn when that is the case, because detailed work is a whole other thing. Agree.

    • @pinodomenico5520
      @pinodomenico5520 7 лет назад

      +Sally Rickard - Clone stamping out an item can be tricky when, in fact, the real issue is to insert or extend the background into the area of the removed object. I run into this all the time in "family photos".
      Point is that the real lesson is about how to ADD/MERGE/EXTEND the background, and that is a whole lesson or set of lessons in itself. In short, I duplicate the layer (so I can add back). Then I look for any symmetry in the background that can be extended into the "erased" area (tiling, or similar objects for example). I realize this would be clearer with examples - just saying that artful use of the clone tool can be a whole group of lessons.

    Although on first look the beam appears real, you have to realize that a beam like that wouldn't light up the trees in the background the way they do. The beam would light up the haze between the source and the target, and it'd would appear to be a light grey. It would actually block the background, not light it up.

    I'm impressed with the techniques in this tutorial but I can't help feel like others on this thread that the 'spotlight' you're painting in wouldn't illuminate trees out of its direct path and so I think this would look amazing if the beam of light actually receded in intensity closer to the source.

    1. When i created a new layer at the beginning, i couldn't clone stamp, i had to make a copy of the original image on work on that one instead. Why is this?

      There's a function in Photoshop that makes the adjustments affect only the layer right below them. Just enable that and the adjustments won't affect the background.

    Cool effect, but with one omission. If the light beam is falling from the sky and if it has so narrow beam, the tree in the background couldn't be lighted, because light beam isn't coming from the viewers side of the picture, so the tree couldn't be so bright. It must be in the dark like the tree trunk. If we want to evoke an effect of real lights, of course. But anyway the idea is very nice!

    why didn't you use a lighting effects filter? , my question is what's the difference between lighting effects filter and curves?

    Really nice work.
    While I'm sure you could do most anything you wanted here, I am curious as to why you chose not to darken the upper trees in background a bit more. My notion is that I would not expect a real [fairly narrow] light source to illuminate the background. While the air/mist would capture some light, I wouldn't expect the trees to have direct illumination. In fact, the more I would see the beam in the air/mist, the less I would expect to see the trees behind (at least in my mind's eye).
    Your thoughts?

      Pino Domenico that was bugging me too, that distant tree in the middle of the light been, yea? You could layer mask and darken that no problem. He didn't even bother with the light stand or lens flare for a nice succinct tutorial.

      +gabrielwhite I think it's a Wacom. It takes time to get used to. If you are good with a mouse, no big advantage using a Wacom.

      i have a wacom too! But a regular bamboo pe and touch. No pro stuff! It bothers me, that the stick of the pen moves in and out aboit a millimeter. It is anoying if you try to navigate in menus and try to tip and select.
