I'm a bass player and huge Jaco fan. The more I watch this the more I appreciate John's and Kenwood's playing here. I LOVE Kenwood's drum solo. So creative and funky.
Like my gramps used to say, "Tight is tight no matter how tight the fight, Dynamite!" I read in his unauthorized bio, that this encounter, with Sco and Kenwood Dennard, happened during the Jaco-on-smack-in-New-York phase. He was basically an outcast at this point and some cheesy VHS instructional video company paid him enough to do a series of tutorials. The end of the video series featured that trio jamming on The Chicken and its the sickest version of that tune in existence, still! Live in a room, a couple of mics, roll....The vibe on this track is intoxicating.
Not sure if the book I read is the same one as you, but didn't they have to pretty much drag him in from sleeping on park benches to do these videos? With him in 'the sweater'. I agree, this is my favorite version of this song. It's amazing... with everything going wrong in his head, how he could still put together this kind of performance. The guy just had music IN him.
Yes, don’t think New York really agreed with Pastorius! Apart from the chemicals, he’d have psychotic episodes and end up in Belle Vue tied to a bed. There are great bootlegs of Jaco live in New York with Birelli Lagrene. He would (and did) play with anyone, thankfully.
Yeah, in the instructional video Jaco is interviewed, the guy says something like "you are the most revered bassist in the world"... and Jaco says "gimme a gig!", haha
It’s such a bummer these guys didn’t get to do more work together. I can’t even imagine how amazing Jaco would’ve been during that whole John Schofield A Go Go period in 90s and 2000s
@@richieiommi Nah, I would only want to be like Jaco Pastorius, not that the guitarist or the drummer ain't good, but they ain't of the same caliber as Jaco.
Fretted Jaco sounds even better than fretteless Jaco. And well…. Yes, I know, he was at the end of his career; he didn't have the chops he was showing in the late 70s; and many other things like that. But hearing him play is still a joy, I would say.
RUclips is full of people playing Chicken a billion times faster with insane technique and real crappy tone emenating from their billion dollar boutique bass guitars. They don't even come close. Not to mention the overall performance of 3 musical gods, which is staggering.

i have to memorise it and mum isnt being so kind about it 😭😭🙏🏻🙏🏻

Yeah! He's the Art Tatum of bass. Way-beyond concepts, technique, and musicianship.

It is my favorite version of The Chicken.
The groove of this is very great that it is hard to believe it is played by three people.

Ufffffffffffffff
I think the guitar player is using an MXR Blue Box, the octave below pedal.. that's insane this is gold
🐓 I could do the chicken all day long. My brother an I used to play this over an over growing up..🐔🐓😁😎 I dearly miss you Larry. I love you brother.
..I will play a tune for Larry today🤩👌
Jaco's facial expression to Schofield near the end warms my soul.
just too good, top notch!!
this video alone is pure gold

I would argue he became more "tasteful" (if possible, given he was Jaco) with his playing. Absolute masterclass of groove as always.
What a groove. Jaco looks happy as hell here! A proper jam 🎉
Jaco Pastorius forever!!!
