there isn’t a hockey scout in the world that likes to be along the glass, they want the highest vantage point in the rink so they can stay away from parents and see the full ice.

My son is a 13 year-old new ref. Not sure he will do it next year despite the money. Parents and coaches are clowns. I have played my whole life and coached for 30, watching him ref opened my eyes even more. I would rather watch him turnover the puck in the slot for the losing goal than watch him get abused by parents and coaches.
Politics in hockey only matter for the bottom 5 guys on the upper level and top 5 guys from the lower level. Top 10 to 12 guys are clearly the top 10-12. If you are a bubble player you will get caught up in the politics.
@@modernman7576 I disagree top line possibly 2 good on chl d1 rest is filler meaning could be good if played all time or crap if sat on bench. Once your at a aaa level if coach puts you jr a at 17/18 gives you minutes and pp for 2-3 you will be ppg guy even if your average overall player.
@MichaelSr-sp5pw hes not actually. I told him if you put yourself into that position you can't get mad because that's where the politics come in. He did and made the lower team.
@ no my kids are not but top players is bogus term. Most aaa have like 2 maybe 3 really good kids… maybe . Rest is really who plays most minutes and top PP it’s not complex. Put kid top line top pp don’t pull him off eventually he gets better over season and he or she will be top 1-3 in team points then move up u14/u15/ u16 as the stars and no one else gets put in those spots . Sure stars are stars but most kids ushl , chl , bchl all close in skill it’s matter of ice time , pp time, and confidence. If a kid on pp goes 0-6 on pp but never gets off pp eventually he will score meanwhile no one else gets chance… as he plays more coach shows he won’t lose pp spot he plays more gains confidence eventually breaks out of rut gets going. Most kids at aaa level will do this . I have seen crazy example over last 3 years a d1 committed kid u16 2 years now u18. U16 top pp top line he’s 1-2 scoring on decent team. Never wins crap cause when league picks up he just isn’t that good . Never off top pp. kid on 2 nd pp same position 6/7 th on scoring never gets the time both years stars are crap. U18 year this year d1 commit off pp he’s 5 th on team points , 4th in goals. He’s only d1 commit on team. Kid who was 2nd pp now u18 other team pp too like top goal scorer and more points than d1 star. And no none are my kids. This is just statistics. More ice more pp more points more opportunity. Who’s top pp… coaches kids , politics kids and yes best kids but you put most aaa players with star aaa on pp they will look good and get good stats that will get them to high levels
@Pickwickiansyndrome-o2e ya there a politics when dealing with a coach. I'm referring to how teams are selected. Once they are on the team it is what it is. I coach and if I'm constantly having to tell a kid to pay attention or play their position no they're not going to get many shifts late in close games. Sorry that's how it works. My team is younger than the group he's specifically talking about so I run my lines on the power play. If it's 3rd lines turn then they go out but I'm not coaching aaa level kids. Players have to earn their ice and younger kids get less of a chance compared to established players. That's the name of the game.
If your good hockey player your gonna get where you need to get to. Maybe but most 4 th and even 3 rd line guys are interchangeable with top line guys in lower leagues. You will say no but I’d disagree. Chl 4 th liners prob no better than top Ojhl players. 4 th liners many d1 programs no better than top school d3 players. Most players are replaceable meaning you got your top kids top lines or 2 those guys are legit then the rest is filler. So who decides the filler? Size , local kids , family lineage/politics. For example you can list lotta ex nhl guys who’s kids prob would not have made it where they are with dads history. You can also name kids make teams just cause they are local. You cannot deny this is a big part of hockey.
Definitely true, some of the politics involved can really limit a players development. Sometimes being good is worse, as those players who are local protect their interests... we'd like to think the best players advance ... that's not always the case.. word juniors as an example
Definitely true. Politics and name recognition plays a huge role on who makes a lot of these teams. As an example, Michigan has 3 former NHL player's kids, Draper, Lapointe, and Horcoff. Horcoff is legit and will probably go in the 2nd round this year. Detroit used a 7th on Draper in 2020, probably as a favor to his dad. Draper and Lapointe are not anything special. You can't tell me the name on the back of the jersey didn't play a role in them getting offers from UM. Similar to Chris Chelios' kids playing on Michigan State years ago.
@ man you said it! If we go down this route we will be here all day. An average player will become good point per game guy if given top min with star linemate. Politics is huge and if you cannot admit it your prob in on it or benefitted from it. Once most kids reach a certain skill level meaning you can go out take regular shift high aaa , minor jr A if your say 17/18 years old most kids could make jump to chl. Play 1 year get used to speed not much then year 2 play regular shift prob get few points then year 3 play pp and 1-2 line most kids will at least pull point per game or every other game. Stars will do great but for most kids all it is is ice time and pp with that comes confidence and risk taking which leads to points. Sure some kids will not do well given that chance but most will put up okay numbers proving it’s about a chance. If you have an in meaning dad , coach Monday whatever then your likely to succeed.
