Parent cuts matter in a tie.
In minor hockey - u15 under elite I feel that tryouts matter for bubble or uncertain kids. Coaches kids? Promotions until it gets uncomfortable. If your kid 'should have made it' to a higher level, then he should dominate that year, make organization evaluators look bad and get a promotion next year.
However, if your kid is in div2, and is 'average' on the team? Guess what? He's where he needs to be.
This year, we have kids butt hurt they didn't make aaa. They were on prev age group aaa, and had 5 points, in ~30games. Quit halfway through season 'cause he was on aa. Wth? There's 3 kids on the team in same category. AAA or we quit. They've given up, and deserve to be benched most games. $6k-$10k /yr fees! Could play juniors somewhere.

The worst part is, they should be the top players on the team, and show leadership to the kids/1st years. Some are super skilled. It's sad to watch.
