My dad always said, "You get better by playing with better players" and "skate every shift as if it's your last." Both are 100% true.

Playing against better players accelerates development by forcing players to skate faster, react quicker, and think ahead. They learn what works at a higher level and improve their positioning, puck control, and decision-making. Stronger competition exposes them to advanced tactics and real-time consequences for mistakes, pushing them to adapt.
Connor Bedard proves this point-he dominated, moved up, and kept improving. If he had stayed in a weak league too long, his growth would have stalled. Competing against tougher opponents is essential for reaching an elite level, as staying in lower leagues limits progress and creates bad habits.

It’s just like any progression, playing at a level that provides continuous challenges will maximize progression. Playing at a level where you can’t even hang will not force you to do anything.
