neil cicierega is the king of "oh, hey, i've heard that thing he made! oh, and that too! wait..." and tally hall + solo projects is 2nd to that, but only 2nd since it's not just 1 guy. the only other person that i've ever had that experience with was jack stauber, as i remembered hearing buttercup once in, like, an among us montage or something. then i heard it again when my friend started listening to him
I'm glad that even after Tally Hall broke up Joe Hawley still kept making music and is seemingly still active, as his songs make up my favorites in there albums.
Andrew and Joe are still actively making things too, Ross is still DJing, Rob is notably making music for an upcoming Disney cartoon. The band’s technically not even broken up, the guys haven’t lost contact with each other or anything either.
So someone commented on the variations on a cloud lyrics video and said “One day I want a Tally Hall movie/documentary with this as the end credits” and you did exactly that! That’s amazing!
What Joe said 1:14:30 about the albums is pretty much exactly what happened. The first album (Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum) was abstract, the second album (Good & Evil) had more logic to it, and the (closest thing to a) third album (Hawaii: Part II) had an entire narrative to it, being a sort of musical. Crazy.
@@homestuckfan670depends if Joe Hawley's mental health gets better, since iirc Andrew said that Joe's mental health was the main thing holding the third album back. (Not blaming Joe, may he get better.)
I think it was Napoleon Bonaparte (after visiting Ann Harbor, Michigan in 1804) who said, “let tally hall sleep, for when they wake, they shall rock the world”
Just to think that Joe only lived 28 minutes away when I was a kid... Damn. Both of us were in a bad place and stuck in crappy Michigan villages. I hope he and I both go onward and upward from now on.

For my birthday last year, a friend of mine got in contact with 3 of the 5 members. I got a vinyl of Marvin's from Rob, an Instagram message from Andrew, and a phone call from Ross. Unless I somehow got to meet the band, it's probably gonna be my favorite birthday for a long time, if not ever.
I became a Tally Hall fan last year after stumbling across Dream Sweet in Sea Major in an auto-generated playlist by RUclips. I was doing homework while listening to music, but when I heard it, I instantly stopped what I was doing to take it all in. It was unlike anything I had ever heard, and from there, I descended into the beautiful rabbit hole that is Tally Hall. I absolutely adore their music and I wish I could have seen them perform live. Thank you for this documentary, what an excellent and comprehensive video!
literally the same thing happened to me, but it was white ball. it's still my favorite song of all time and i've lost track on how many times ive listened to it.
For. Me it was jack manifolds twitch stream where he did karaoke and sang Dream Sweet in sea major. And a year before that I had listened to the mind electric in some playlist Spotify created for me.
2:06:00 The binary code, when translated, reads,"atlantic lie John's golden shores awaiting the arrival of their unassuming servents". When pasted into google, the only conclusive result was of Queen Lili'uokalani's book Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen. It can be assumed that John refers to John Own Dominis, the Prince consort of the Hawaiian Islands between January and August of 1891, or his father, John Dominis. His father came to America during the Napoleonic Wars, and afterwards had often travelled across the pacific, making stops in Hawaii. Lili'uokalani was the last Queen of Hawaii before the 1893 coup d'etat and the overthrow of the monarchy, following an economic crisis and pro-American ventures. My belief is that this message refers to John finding paradise, only for it to collapse soon after, but I am not fully convinced of this yet. That is the most I can gather from this cryptic message at 3:30am in the morning. As for the purpose of this message, there has been an ARG surrounding the channel Comprehension Amalgamation, who appears to have some connection with Tally Hall, though its purpose is unclear to this day.
just translated this and scrolled down the page to find someone else who found it. there was also another single frame near the beginning but i didn't pause to look at it.
I'm pretty sure "John" actually refers to Void Eon, who is a person that Comprehension Amalgamation has been trying/was trying to get the attention of for unknown reasons
I was a die-hard fan of Tally Hall since 2007. Followed them and consumed all of their content religiously, met them all and got pics/autographs, I have the 13th Place statue for my Good & Evil preorder, and was at their final show in Pittsburgh. Genuinely was crushed when they went their separate ways, even despite some of the great projects and popularity that they garnished both individually and as a band in the following years. Thank you for this outstanding comprehensive documentary, it brought back so many memories. I sort of got away from music in general over the past 5+ years, so I didn't realize that there was a lot of more recent projects by the guys, or all of these interviews where they disclosed a lot of interesting info, with several of them sharing the desire to re-unite sometime soon. It would be something special to see the kind of popularity and crowds they would get. These guys truly were ahead of their time, and I think it would be so cool to see them get the respect and appreciation they deserve from both old fans and new. Thanks again.
Oh my gosh, I never expected to hear my high school voice today. The WXJR clip at 8:40ish was an Skype interview my buddy Matt and I did our senior year of high school with Joe! This documentary is so good, thank you for making it!
The character art for post-band Joe Hawley a little bit broke me - specifically for the detail of the little round sunglasses he wore in that infamous performance at ann arbor in 2016, where he was filmed singing 'storm and a spring' and was widely speculated to have been on the verge of tears for the entire performance. Just. the little details.
I am a random dude who’s never seen your content and just wanted to check if there were any good Tally Hall docs on RUclips. You popped up in my search results, so I guess I’ll be sticking around for the premiere lol. Been a fan since 2011, glad to see the guys finally get more recognition.
A super interesting and well made retrospective!! I only got into Tally Hall fairly recently and it quickly became one of my favourite bands, so this was a very entertaining watch. Good job!!
Tally Hall are probably one of the most influential bands of the 2000s, i think if you look really deep into it you could consider them the modern Genesis due to being kooky progressive pop with odd connections to other well known pieces of their respective cultures, i absolutely ADORE Tally Hall’s style with everything from their lyrics to their harmonies to how they play their instruments, it’s insane how deeply intertwined Tally Hall are into internet culture
The live chat from what I saw of it was such a legendary event, so many fans who’ve known the band for different amounts of time were all together and rallying the hall... Absolutely beautiful
@@pop_tato Yeah, there were a couple times I popped in during the middle while there was a spammer, but they seemed to be gone by the end. It was truly amazing seeing so many people I’d seen around in one place! Can’t wait for the next event like this.
Honestly it doesn't matter to me whether they get back together or not. I feel like a lot of time with creaotrs, especially musicians, people demand much more than what they can make and that can take a toll on both their mental health and their creations. If they do come back, I'll be happy to hear their music again. If they don't, well, godspeed.
Never heard of their group until this documentary. Shia LaBeouf was the closest I got in any related media. I love this. It reminds me of the individual stories and lives people live well after their heyday. If a 3rd album ever releases I'll be satisfied knowing I was around to hear their story and music anew.
It’s sad, it felt like Joe and rob were the creative anchors of the band and one had a series of big breaks and successes while the other is a controversial unstable guy who kind of fell out of the limelight despite loving it so much
I. FUCKING. LOVED. THIS. ENTIRE. DOCUMENTARY. Sorry if that comes off as too strong but seriously, this is 3 straight hours of history and some of the most detailed information (outside of just directly going to Hidden in the Sand) on Tally Hall that I need any and all Tally Hall fans to see. Your dedication to this band, it's history, the unknown future and just everything is fantastic. And man, using Ruler of Everything in the intro and then ending with Variations on a cloud is just... beauty. Holy shit. It's actually something I wanted to do myself if I ever made something Tally Hall related. I got kinda close with the video I have on my channel where I go from the Ruler of Everything music video to the Complete Demos version in the end credits, but THIS is far superior in every way. You already had me before with your Awful Fawful video but now I am fully happy to say that you are easily my new favorite youtube channel. Happily looking forward to your next upload.
Tally hall changed my life and ignited an intrinsic adoration of music. Despite how many there are tally hall is really the only fabloo artist I like. Their songs talk about existentialism, theocracy, time. Hidden side projects, decade hiatus. It’s perfect. I have no qualms or issues calling them the greatest band of all time.
"you likely have heard their work without knowing it." That is true, in fact, 2 separate events. as a kid, I would watch Playhouse Disney (way before it turned into Disney Junior) and one of the shows I'd watch Happy Monster Band (which has some tally hall forces in, you can straight up hear both Joe and Zubin) and I've stumbled upon the Shia Labeouf song Rob did.
2:06:00 "atlantic lie John's golden shores awaiting the arrival of their unassuming servents [sic]" Also the backwards voice at the end says something like "I talk in reverse, Just Jargon said"
This band is like magic. Ask anyone who knew about them and they all have stories about how they were all just super fun and stand-up guys. So let’s hope they just get bigger and more people can enjoy their friggin’ sweet songs.
cant believe my life has come to the point that i will literally sit through three hours of content just so i can learn the ins and outs of one of my favourite musical artists of all time ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS VIDEO TYSM FOR MAKING THIS SO I DIDNT HAVE TO RESEARCH STUFF FOR MYSELF :DDDDDDD
I am so happy that my friends and I were able to save the AnonyMous film from being lost forever. I never knew Tally Hall was a thing until after I posted the AnonyMous film.
Honestly, if they were to get back together somehow, I'd be pretty likely for success. All the popularity from some songs on the internet could set them up for future success. Rob clearly has tons of resources at his disposal, I wouldn't doubt that they could make music in disney/pixar movies if they ever got back together. Joe Hawley's history is definitely a problem, but anyone is capable of growth, and he did mention the possibility of clearing his name. He would certainly get the help he needs if anything about his mental health is confirmed. I'm just saying, the band might have a bright future ahead of them.
1:44:26 I JUST REALIZED THAT PIANO IS PLAYING WHITE BALL. Unless it was added in the documentary and not in the original, THEY KNEW. THERE IS NO WAY THAT WOULD’VE BEEN A COINCIDENCE.
Honestly, when I stumbled upon Tally Hall I assumed they were long dead and a relic of the early 2000s, it might not be anything concrete but I have hope that they might return one day. And if they don’t, well at least I can take solace in knowing the members are still alive and kicking!
I found Tally Hall when I was real young, I don't even know how young anymore. It was the Hidden in the Sand music video, and I kinda forgot about them for a while. I eventually came back to them roughly 4 years ago? Maybe 3? They've been one of my favorite bands since. Genuinely, nothing beats their unique sound to me. Every time I realize there's a song or a version of a song I haven't heard, it's like a little gift has been left for me. I had no idea that their history was this expansive, but I'm so glad that I found their music when I did.
Watching this is such a weird emotional experience for me. They were recording music and making their web series when I was in high school and college ('02 - '08), and I was so obsessed. But I kind of forgot about them after college, and recently I was reminded because a couple songs are popular on TikTok. Watching this documentary, I realize I still know all their names and I know the dialogue for their videos almost verbatim!
at around 2:06:01 there's a frame in binary that translates to this. "Atlantic lie John's golden shores awaiting the arrival of their unassuming servants" no idea what it mean exactly but my best guess would be it referring to the song "Introduction to the Snow" or maybe "Dream Sweet in Sea Major".
did some research and it’s referencing an arg that had something to do with tally hall. search up zam 440 and comprehension amalgamation. i don’t know much about the story but there are many analyses out there
i first started listening to tally hall in 2017, it’s amazing to see how much they’ve grown even while the band isn’t together now. it’s much more known than when I found it, and their music has always been so great. I’ve never gotten tired of it.
This band makes me wish to be borned 10 years earlier so i can know about them even more... they definitely deserved more recognition but they didn't get it.. their entire career and music will be just lost media in a couple of decades and they will be great pieces of history.. One if the greatest bands of all time.. no doubts.
I approve of this documentary

Rest in peace Coz, the best companion this band and community could ever ask for.
Joe put his heart in miracle musical and then expected it to just stay underground? No thats not how it works.
I'm glad that even after Tally Hall broke up Joe Hawley still kept making music and is seemingly still active, as his songs make up my favorites in there albums.
Rob makes music still too, for Disney
they didn't break up
Andrew and Joe are still actively making things too, Ross is still DJing, Rob is notably making music for an upcoming Disney cartoon.
The band’s technically not even broken up, the guys haven’t lost contact with each other or anything either.
Joe’s music is really great. I’m glad this documentary helped you find his solo work, I think you’ll love it :)
i thought for a second you said “I’m glad that Tally Hall broke up-“
So someone commented on the variations on a cloud lyrics video and said “One day I want a Tally Hall movie/documentary with this as the end credits” and you did exactly that! That’s amazing!

@@typicalfurry2747 it wasn't, I saw the comment myself
What Joe said 1:14:30 about the albums is pretty much exactly what happened. The first album (Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum) was abstract, the second album (Good & Evil) had more logic to it, and the (closest thing to a) third album (Hawaii: Part II) had an entire narrative to it, being a sort of musical. Crazy.

Had a similar case for me too, I think the first song I heard was "&"
For me it was hidden in the sand

Their internet show was ahead of its time and it's truly a shame that they didn't keep going with it.
I am devastated from hearing about Joe's situation honestly. It upsets me a lot
im so sad this band ended before i could have seen it.

I was wondering what all this was about. Thanks for the well made info
just translated this and scrolled down the page to find someone else who found it. there was also another single frame near the beginning but i didn't pause to look at it.
I'm pretty sure "John" actually refers to Void Eon, who is a person that Comprehension Amalgamation has been trying/was trying to get the attention of for unknown reasons
@@river3604 that whole thing and channel has JOE written all over it, he would do some shit like this lmao

Same! They're so inspiring and uniqie
Never heard of their group until this documentary. Shia LaBeouf was the closest I got in any related media. I love this. It reminds me of the individual stories and lives people live well after their heyday. If a 3rd album ever releases I'll be satisfied knowing I was around to hear their story and music anew.

That is true, in fact, 2 separate events. as a kid, I would watch Playhouse Disney (way before it turned into Disney Junior) and one of the shows I'd watch Happy Monster Band (which has some tally hall forces in, you can straight up hear both Joe and Zubin) and I've stumbled upon the Shia Labeouf song Rob did.

I am so happy that my friends and I were able to save the AnonyMous film from being lost forever. I never knew Tally Hall was a thing until after I posted the AnonyMous film.
This has an underwhelmingly low amount of views for how good this is and for how much effort was put into it.

As an older tally hall fan. It’s lovely to see how much praise they’ve gotten over the past 3 or so years
Honestly, when I stumbled upon Tally Hall I assumed they were long dead and a relic of the early 2000s, it might not be anything concrete but I have hope that they might return one day.
