TK, The big bonus of the Land Cruiser is the more generous headroom. I find it frustrating that Toyota managed to make the interior of the new 4Runner so cramped. 🤨The fact Toyota has given us more 4X4 choices has to be a good thing. Now let's hope they give us an affordable 4X4 choice with their new FJ Cruiser. 🤞
Yeah, I like the round ones too, but it seems like they purposely made it look "cheap" with those plastic surrounds so that more people get the higher trim. They could have put a bit more effort into the round headlight trim so that they didn't give off "base model" vibes.
It matters what colour you get with the round headlights. I ordered a 1958 in black. It just looks better than the white truck. As for getting the 1958…. I just like base and simple. People with all the fancy options screw around too much and don’t get moving. I wanna drive and not look at monitors. Also I just like the cloth on these. It looks awesome. 😎
Apparently the headlight modules will swap between the two styles. Will be interesting to see how many people actually do so. I also wonder if the 3-element lights on the LC trim actually have superior light output vs the single element units on the 1958/launch versions.
I make it simple for you, Old man is Land cruiser. He is a man of fine taste probably eating best Bourbon and Steaks. Truck King is 4-Runner man. Without a doubt the king but still discovering about the world. He eats fried chicken and beer.
Father's getting at the aspirational reality of commercialism. "I'm a 4-runner guy" "I'm a Land Cruiser guy." I'm a chevy guy. I'm a GMC diesel guy. Great work guys! Always looking forward to new content.
As always, great video, great convo and points at the end. Thank you. The talk really comes down to, especially when talking about the top trims, the Land Cruiser vs 4Runner vs GX if you have some money to play around with. Pricing nowadays continues to make it hard for us Canadians, sadly.
I’ve had both. New 1970 Landcruiser ( fantastic) and new 1987 4Runner (underpowered 4 banger). I like the looks of the new 4Runner much better. I still have my 2000 Tacoma, bought new, and is the BEST vehicle I’ve ever owned.
I agree with dad. Most people buy their vehicles based on their lifestyle and life image. Same reason why a doctor or a lawyer would buy a lexus LX rather than a Hyundai SUV. And it's not because they cannot afford a Hyundai nor cannot drive a Hyundai but rather their lifestyles expect or even call for it. Toyota knows this and that's why they balance marketing and technical details hence making them the biggest car manufacturer in the world.
Just subscribed your channel. Good job guys. Loved review.. however it’s just like RAV4 and Grand Highlander. Land Cruiser and Prado (international market small Land Cruiser) so we are getting Prado..
I know they sort of mentioned this but if you do convert USD to CAD the CAD price would be even higher. Tell me why it’s not US price that is too high vs CAD price ??
@TruckKing there could be unknown factors on why selling these vehicles in Canada are not as profitable. Nothing is cut and dry when it comes to pricing. Toyota is in the business of selling trucks to make money. They most likely are not just raising the price in Canada because of some willy nilly reason. I am willing to bet the Canadian government has something to do with added cost for Toyota to sell to Canada.
I’m more of a practical guy. Back in the 90s, I remember going through the outback in a Landcruiser, and it was almost effortless. That being said, I live in LA, so any suv would be overkill for my needs. My hatchback fits a bike or surfboard easily, and gets great mpg while sitting in traffic.
I probably lean towards the land cruiser simply because there’s more overall volume inside. I think it looks better and it has a full-time system with both high and low on its lower trims.
Love both the LC and the 4Runner and would love to own both someday! I lean more towards owning an LC first. I have owned an 87 and 99 4Runner and a 99 LC and I loved the 99 LC by far better than the two 4Runners I owned. But now since the new LC's and 4Runners have many of the same features, it will be interesting which SUV will pull at my heart-strings more. Great job on showing the off-road and on-road capabilities of the new LC. You guys are the first I have seen to do that...thanks!
I still have a 4Runner that I bought in 2009 when I was 30 years old. 2 kids and 15 years later, I’ve matured, I’ve had success in life and I prefer to buy a Land Cruiser over another 4Runner. I think I’m the exact target market for this vehicle.
70k for cloth seats and a mechanical twin to a 4Runner for 10-15k more is wild. I will say it seems like Toyotas dealer model in Canada appears to be going to more of an order based structure. Any Toyota lot I go by there’s hardly any new inventory. So it’s not like at 70k these will be sitting on lots. Toyota is simply only going to build as many as people want in Canada vs supplying lots in the US for dealers to actively try and sell. Does this make any sense to anyone else??
There shouldn't be square headlights. Love the round. The one thing I can't get over is how cheap the car sounds when you shut or slam a car door. Is it Cybertruck bad? Yeah, it's probably Cybertruck bad. On the bright side, it's nice having options with the Lexus and 4Runner options.
What about the headroom and shoulder room compared with the 4runner ? is it smaller ? do you feel tighter ? Does somene 6'4 feel okey in this Landcruiser ? i didnt see a moonroof. Any thoughts for tall people ?
I'd call this a competitor for the subaru outback tbh. in the modern day both seem to serve similar purposes. Nobody is going rock crawling in either of those but for a general purpose adventure machine I could see them as competition.
I like the round headlights better. I’m surprised they didn’t move the trailer light connection, it’s the same location on the 4Runner and it’s a pain getting on your knees to hook up lights. Also, I think most people will buy the cheaper option due to the current economic climate.
I disagree. I think they’re just approaching the market differently, at least that’s my theory. Go to any Toyota lot in Canada and they might have 1-2 new vehicles of each model, if that. They’re all order based now, so Toyota only needs to build what customers order in Canada. If they don’t have many orders, they simply won’t spend the money to build them for Canada. Again just a theory but I have no other answer for why Toyota Dealers in Canada still have so few cars on their lots..
Pretty much people that wanted a Jeep 30 years ago - they buy one now not realizing they're actually buying a Fiat with a Jeep badge and a Land Rover price tag. Yeeks.
Don’t be ridiculous. Jeeps are about as capable as you can get and whether you like this vehicle or that vehicle, you can’t deny their place in the market.
Landcruiser is a logical next step for previous 4Runner owners. Landcruiser will ultimately be significantly more expensive. However, Landcruiser does offer more luxury, better road performance, arguably better looking, and the Landcruiser legacy name.
That Canada price is just wacky. When a lightly used Cayenne is a cross-shop consideration to a Toyota, someone is just getting too big for their britches.
15:28 I like the new Toyota/Lexus body on frame SUV’s. A lot. Might grab a GX550 in a few years once the dealerships are done taking advantage of the first and 2nd year customers. But I’m calling it now. This segment is still big enough now thanks to the “human malware event of unknown origin” that inspired many to van life it and go “overlanding” instead of working. But it’s gonna dry up again as does any enthusiast segment. I give the LC about 5+ years and it will die like the FJ because the segment is too crowded and it’s the in-betweener of the trio. I hope I’m wrong and this comment doesn’t “age well”. But I fear I just might be correct. Cheers for now and see you back here in the comments in 5-6 years, internet!
Which has better droop. Part of the reason the LC sits lower is actually better for wheel droop when off roading, right? Lifting vehicle loses droop for tires to stay on the ground, no? Fairly sure the Land Cruiser is actually more capable than the 4R, not the other way around. LC also has full time 4x4 and 4R is part time which I think is less capable, maybe?
I noticed the 1958 doesn’t offer the front stabilizer disconnect. Do you guys think it makes that much of a difference off road? I know it’s independent suspension, so I wonder if it really matters.
When you open the tailgate, is the 4 inch or so step up because of the battery? I noticed it in the 4 runner too, but don't recall that on our previous 4 runners. Dogs may have fits over that at first.
Yes I think so. It’s why the LC doesn’t have a third row, and why the third row in the 4Runner is only available in the non hybrid (I think). The GX has a third row because it’s a TT 6cyl non hybrid, so no raised floor.
IMO Toyota blew it. Overcomplicated, over-styled, overpriced and went away from what made their 4x4's so popular in the first place. Adding a snail and a hybrid system to gain marginal improvements in MPG and towing while sacrificing simplistic longevity was not a worth trade off.
The 2.4T had nothing to do with MPG, it's all driven by emission mandates. While not as simplistic as a naturally aspired V6, the system is about as basic as you can get for a turbo engine. Toyota used mechanical parts everywhere they could. VVT is mechanical both on the the intake and exhaust side, and the turbo actuator is mechanical unlike the electronically controlled actuators on the TTV6. The engine is also an under square design which is a large part why peak torque comes in at 1700 rpm. I'm willing to bet the distain for the 2.4T will quickly fade once they start getting into consumer hands.
@@JohnDoe-wy2py I'm in the US. Automakers have less than 2 years to meet major emission regulations that will continue getting stricter each of the following 4 years there after. They are so strict that many gasoline engines will begin using particulate filters similar to what diesel engines are required to use today. Just look at the power these new crop of engines are putting out. If efficiency was the goal, hybrid systems used on Toyota trucks for example would be designed to increase mpg, but instead they're used to increase power output.
We are often invited to first drive programs (along with all the other automotive media) to experience vehicles on a course or road chosen by the manufacturer. That's what you're seeing here. In this case, on a small off-road course outside San Diego. As soon as we can get one and bring it back to our trails, rest assured that we will.
Always wanted a 80 series Land Cruiser, when they announced that the Land Cruiser was coming back to the states at a more affordable price..Why not get a modern Land Cruiser…Plus I work for Toyota, getting a killer price on one

Or does brake-based traction control make up for the lack of front locking differential? Because I know the Land Cruiser 300 series has a front locker, and I think the Lexus might too?
I have a 2019 200 series and enjoy everything except the fuel economy and touchscreen stereo/climate control system. The newer options in North America really didn’t seem that much better.
LC in other markets has roof ac vents and 3rd row. So if you have passengers regularly (a small family) I think lc would be a better option. Two people and more offroad 4R. Personally I'll first look at lc 300.
This LC250 has 3rd row seats in other markets because certain markets gets diesel or non-hybrid gas engines. The battery for the hybrid takes the space where the third row would be.
In the UK we have 2.8L diesel only and its then home land of land rover. Similar price vs new defender 110 d250. Hard choice(no reliability arguement again please😂)
Surprised that MTS and trail cameras aren’t standard. My TRD Pro has them and is cheaper. These aren’t different enough from the upcoming 4Runner. I don’t see Toyota’s logic.
I Think toyota had a miss not putting a third row in the Land Cruiser. To me, the Land Cruiser should have some extra flip down seats or something in the back and the 4runner should be the two row off roader. I think of the land cruiser more as the safari ride. not the rock crawler.
Landcruiser is for Toyota fans including current 4Runner owners 4Runner is for bronco and wrangler cross shoppers People that have never owned a Toyota Those people won’t go for landcruiser because they don’t appreciate the brand. That is why 4Runner has the laptop on the dash and landcruiser doesn’t. Landcruiser customers know what they want and the base version will be the big seller. Toyota knows this. Customers will trade 4Runners for landcruiser and 4Runner will get customers from other brands. That is the thinking Thank me later😅
First car was a 1974 landcruiser FJ40, since then, I've owned an 80, 100, and now a 200 series landcruiser. 4runners are neat but it's nor a cruiser. But now it's almost like they're the same with different features. Either way love toyotas
Landcuriser for North America. To bad its not a world Landcuriser like a 79 series or 200 series like Australia gets. But would certainly take the 1958 edition with round headlights. Great suspension movement while wheeling. Noticed in video footage.

I Think toyota had a miss not putting a third row in the Land Cruiser. To me, the Land Cruiser should have some extra flip down seats or something in the back and the 4runner should be the two row off roader. I think of the land cruiser more as the safari ride. not the rock crawler.
Land Cruiser - Upper Class / 4Runner - MIddle Class
Landcruiser is for Toyota fans including current 4Runner owners
4Runner is for bronco and wrangler cross shoppers
People that have never owned a Toyota
Those people won’t go for landcruiser because they don’t appreciate the brand.
That is why 4Runner has the laptop on the dash and landcruiser doesn’t.
Landcruiser customers know what they want and the base version will be the big seller.
Toyota knows this.
Customers will trade 4Runners for landcruiser and 4Runner will get customers from other brands.
That is the thinking
Thank me later😅
Agreed. And Jeeps and Broncos are for cross dressers.
Round headlights
Did he really just say he thought it was fairly priced? Wtf? It's worth maybe 40k with power seats
Gives me bronco vibes. 2025 4 Runner looks better and does the same
Prefer the ROUND lights and a V6 (non-turbo).
I don't understand why Toyota design land cruiser's engin to require premium gas and not regular gas...
Definitely round
This type of vehicles should not have hybrid system. You add more weight and you lose cargo space.
First car was a 1974 landcruiser FJ40, since then, I've owned an 80, 100, and now a 200 series landcruiser. 4runners are neat but it's nor a cruiser. But now it's almost like they're the same with different features. Either way love toyotas
I know US dollars aren’t 1:1 with Canadian currency. But why such a big mark up in Canada? Toyota isn’t the only manufacturer offering 4WD.
It's actually cheaper in Canada than USA if you look at straight currency conversion. Canadian $ is in the toilet.
Landcuriser for North America. To bad its not a world Landcuriser like a 79 series or 200 series like Australia gets. But would certainly take the 1958 edition with round headlights. Great suspension movement while wheeling. Noticed in video footage.
actually it is worl wide, just the powertrains are diffrent
You guys need to invest in better video editing and quality it will draw in so many more viewers
