Peter, love that you are not afraid to show that you don’t know everything. I started to follow you because of your awesome work and knowledge of canon cameras. So glad to see some GM on the channel. Keep it up.
Seems you fell into the trap of mastering the art and not the tool. I’m glad someone as skilled as you are still learning. I appreciate you taking us on the journey.
Wow, yes you need to set a back button for af ONE SHOT/SERVO switching. I also have one set for switching between subject detect/single-point. Saves so much time.
Thenks Peter, I just started using the Mfn button 2 months ago, the R5 has such a steep learning curve it takes awhile to understand it all. Great video, always love your stuff.
3:22.... Chefs kiss. Love it! Gonna go take the same shot of my hubby's 1949 M47.... which is also a work in progress... but we don't have an @Howard Monteith... so might be a while more
This is a very good setup. But how do you switch from photo to video mode (and reverse)? It seems like Canon is only allowing this function on the M.Fn button, so I have to decide for one. Very limiting :(
@@SamFigueroa Yes, that's the standard way on the R5 as well - I find it rather cumbersome for a quick switch. The one-button-switch between video and photo is only customizable on the M.Fn button, as is the switch between the custom modes. At least as far as I can see. So you have to make a choice. Don't really know why Canon limits the customization of the buttons...
While I was editing my videos late at night I was re watching, the Norway series, art over comfort, the lost channel. Ohh man so good… just to get some cinematic vlogging vibes. Thank you for making timeless pieces of art. I just got a new lens and was inevitable to go inside the rabbit hole of watching your vids and feel the passion💪🏻
Pretty sure setting all the customs was the first thing I did when I got the R5. Record button automatically does whatever is set to C3 in Video, love having 4k 120 set without even switching to video
It's funny when you made that point about "Pete, why am I seeing trucks?" It made me think (as someone with absolutely no interest on trucks of my own) that I love watching you talk about them.. and if there is something camera related too, then awesome.. but I love the videos with you and Howard working on them and would watch them on any channel.. what has always made your videos great is that you talk about things you love and that passion explodes off the screen! (and I love custom buttons too!)
I mean this is cool, and I’ll use it for sure, so thanks! But imagine a button that makes a Premiere-compatible marker on a video clip’s metadata! I would LOVE that for editing longer form videos.
I love photography and videography. There is lots of channels that are about photography and videography. I watch Peter McKinnon because he’s Peter Fn McKinnon.
The setting worked on my Canon M50 Mark II! Just the other day I was thinking “if only I could just hit a button to switch from photo to movie without having to move the camera from my eye and loosing the shot. Thank you!
Agreed, I use custom functions on my Nikon Z9....shooting Aperture mode (f1.8 at 60fps) and in an instant move to shutter speed 1250, f4.0 with just a press of my f1 button.....instantly. Love it. ❤❤
The R6 has the Video and C1-3 modes on the physical dial too. So no option for the M-fn button to toggle video. I do use it though to toggle EVF-LCD and another button to force sleep mode on the camera. Well... a couple of thousand shots more than usual, did not hurt anyone...
When you hit the dedicated record button in photo mode it jumps automatically to C3 settings. So setup your most used video settings on C3 and not C1 or C2. I have an R5C so I use my R5 for photography exclusively and I have C1-C2 setup with different AF modes and AF cases for landscapes and wildlife, and C3 for video mode.
I learned something new. I don't do much video, but then I also am not using the M-Fn button for anything either, so I might have to give it a try. Regarding the custom modes, I did a short video on my channel a while back with a great tip for those, which I wasn't seeing anywhere else. Feel free to check it out and let me know what you think.
@@beau__ For sure! Setting the Custom Functions for video is a huge benefit for videographers and a feature many R6 users, including myself, want. They should update thst via firmware on the R6. It's just ridiculous that it didn't come as standard!
i manage to practice always my Canon R6 always in C3 mode in photo mode,. then when im switching to video i just switch it to video instantly,. the only thing that need to put in menu is the 120FHD,. thats why in my favorite Menu,. i put the highframerate there so that i can easly access it to menu then switch to 120p,.
I would make fun of my buddy who is almost half my age because he would just use his camera exactly "how it came out of the box" meanwhile I'm customizing everything to my needs. This absolutely blows my mind that you, the Peter McKinnon, hasn't been doing this
Oh dude 😊 when I designed the first Leica SL body - I‘ve added a button just for this purpose! There are product managers out who understand the needs of photo- & videographers. ❤.. and just to be ahead of those other brands - that “LiveView Switch” is even customizable if you don‘t like it 🤦🏼. haha I just had to tell you that little story. Keep on the good work !
Sony shooter here - this was still super helpful for me! Like you, I’ve seen those custom buttons for ages, just never stopped to think about using them. Thanks for the tip.
I’m so happy you have discovered custom function buttons. I shoot on the nikon z9. Love having everything set through custom buttons! Hybrid shooting made easy! 🙌
While I'm still forcibly watching the RUclips advertisements before the video plays, I already feel compelled to like Peter McKinnon's videos because I just know it's going to be awesome
Pete, you biscuit!! Just shows, you don't need all the bells and whistles to be a legend! They do help though haha, especially with Wildlife photography...
Awesome like Always! I love your videos and you were the reason i startet RUclips! I have learned so much to start and evolve my video Game thx to you!
we bought 3 Lumix GH6's for podcasts and being able to just hit a custom function button and all 3 cameras are immediately ready to shoot with exactly the same settings is such a gamechanger. Every camera should have this
I was doing custom functions all over my GH5 because it was a beast, but then when I switched to the Canon R, it didn't have anything close to the same capabilities, so... yeah I kind of forgot about them lol. I wish all cameras had the customizable buttons like the GH5.
Love it. If you're in the Sony world, I would highly recommend Matt Johnson's video on presets and whatnot. I'm a video only, dude, but the options are probably similar.
I think this is true of many things for a professional or a person who has been doing a thing for a long time. You have your method, you have your flow and it just works. And why should you switch, your method works. And then you try it the other way, make it your way and then it's just - "crap, why didn't I do this before".
When you went “snip snap snip snap” all i could think of was Micheal Scott saying that😂. Awesome tip, as usual!!! Definitely going to start using this, so much freaking quicker!
Yeah, I have the R5 and had been using the mode dial and info button.... you gave me time back in my life for those special moments. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!!!!!!! :) 📷📷📷📷📷📷📷📷📷📷📷

This is dope!! ALSO, Raptor at the beginning? Guessing it’s old footage??but man that thing is sick!
PETE!? How have you made it this far without custom functions? 🤣 You taught me everything I know about cameras. Much love always! Thank you!
Who taught you about custom buttons?! 🤣
I did the same thing.

I always use that button to cycle through custom presets. So you can go from slomo to 60fps to 24 with on click 😊
This is a very good setup. But how do you switch from photo to video mode (and reverse)? It seems like Canon is only allowing this function on the M.Fn button, so I have to decide for one. Very limiting :(
On my Canon EOS-R I can switch back and forth between photo and video if I hit Mode+Info. It's pretty quick.

One reason I love the Sony A7IV is the dedicated photo, video, S&Q switch. Not hating on Canon it's just really nice to have a switch for it!
But it’s sooo uncomfortable to switch on the blazing of a moment that you can even switch from photo to s&q accidentally
