Great review Scott! I love flying into Vancouver from Alberta in the winter months! The scenery over the Rockies and right into Vancouver is stunning!! I always get a window seat when I fly home!
Your comment about the weather reminded me of the one time I spent Christmas with family in Edmonton. Turned out to be only the 2nd Christmas without snow since they’d moved there about 30 years earlier!
It’s hard to imagine Edmonton without snow in late December or January. I was actually surprised to see Calgary covered in snow, but not Edmonton on the day that I flew up there.
@@sanspotter If I remember correctly, it started snowing a little a couple of days after Christmas but it was still a long way off the full Alberta winter experience!
I think of Swoop as the "Allegiant" of Canada. Of course you have to buy food/beverages and there's no IFE or streaming, but they offer WiFi and Charging Ports, and seem to have a consistently nice product.
All of Swoop's current aircraft are Ex-WestJet -800s, which is probably why they have seatback charging and wifi domes. Soon they will be getting some brand new MAXs though, so I wonder if those will have the same features.
I flew on Swoop From Jamaica To Canada Then Canada to Edmonton Then Edmonton To Canada Then Canada To Jamaica so yeah I am a Swoop Fan My big bro Works with Swoop
I have yet to try Swoop. But by the looks of your video, not bad. Flew DCA-YUL-YVR on Monday. Always nice flying over the Canadian Rockies. And whilst transferring at YUL I passed by a Camden Foods. No time to grab a bite but did look to see if you might be in there.
I have found that flying these ULCC's is pretty OK if you manage your expectations and understand their rules of engagement. Done right, you can really make them work out to your advantage.
The thing that sets this airline apart is the inflight WiFi, not something that you'll see on ultra-low-cost carriers (or even some normal LCCs). Nice job, WestJet!
I flew Swoop back in 2019 from Hamilton to Halifax. It was a great flight, mostly because I paid to get the real extra legroom in an exit row by the over wing exits. The cool thing about flying out of Hamilton is that there is a nice little aviation museum at the airport.
Thanks for the review. I know you did not buy from the onboard menu but it would have been nice if you had showed, reviewed and given prices for items on board.
You’re very welcome! Yes, I was actually hoping to include that content, but there weren’t any menus or handouts with menu items and prices. From what I could tell, it was just basic soft drinks, water, and bags of chips.
Yeah, they have been dropping a lot of routes recently! They quit flying to San Diego shortly after I made this video - which is a bummer since it was nice to have a nonstop option to Edmonton.
I just saw this video and was exited to know theres a direct flight from San Diego to Edmonton… until I did my own research right now and i cant find anything on their website saying they fly out of San Diego anymore. Looks like they pulled out of that airport. Did they?
I'm actually flying from Hamilton to Edmonton to meet my girlfriend for the first. Went from New York where i live and drove to Hamilton for the flight. Thank you for sharing your experience friend. Update: both flights going to my now fiance and coming home was amazing. I'm glad that i flew Swoop and honestly would fly swoop again in the future.
One interesting about Swoop's 737-800s is that they are new enough to have Boeing Sky Interior equipped but they don't have it. Same goes with most of WestJet's 737-800s as well.
Great review man! Experienced Swoop back in 2021 from Toronto - Edmonton and lemme tell you, 4 hrs in that type of legroom is tough 🤣 But the scenery was worth it 👌
Nice review! Our take on Swoop is a bit different but it gets you from A to B, eventually... but we fly into Edmonton a few times a year to visit family and the ULCCs make it possible to do it as often as we do. I prefer Flair though, I'd love to see a head to head comparison :)
Swoop was created after WestJet went full service, to become what WestJet used to be, the Canadian Southwest. Now that WJA is going to become the Canadian JetBlue with it's new CEO, Swoop might become a full on competitor to Flair and Lynx.

Scott! I hope you had a great time in my home city. Glad you had a pretty decent flight with Swoop, gives me hope to potentially try them out flying down to the US one day. Westjet has been my go-to within Canada, but we're finally getting some decent competition.
Yeah, I really liked Edmonton. I rented a car the next morning and drove around checking it out for a couple hours, and I liked how quiet it was. Seems to be a lot of construction going on though! 😮

Update Swoop has been reintegrated into its parent company and Canada’s second largest airline Westjet and all of their planes now fly under Westjet. The airline has been shutdown and all routes that they serve(d) have either been shut down or are now serviced through Westjet!
Great video. I however wonder something. It looks like Scott, it sounds like Scott. The backpack looks like Scott's. But without any mention of chicken and rice, it might be a very clever imposter! LOL! Once again, great video!
@@sanspotter ok was curious because it looked bigger than the dimensions for a personal item. i dont know if swoop allows backpakcs a little bit bigger than what the rules are.
Maybe they remained in the international terminal since only select Canadian airports have US customs and they (obviously like all ULCC) are big in secondary markets like Hamilton or Abbottford who I’d assume both do not have is customs (also San Diego to Hamilton would be great for people like me right across the border in New York)
Thanks! I’ve flown WestJet and Air Canada a few times already, and those experiences have been great. Air Canada domestic business class is surprisingly good! 😮
This is another one of those instances that as long as everything is going well, you will likely make it to your destination with this airline ok. My wife and I have been flying SWOOP between Hamilton and Abbotsford about 3-4 times per year for the past 4 years. However this is about to change... We were caught in a bad winter storm recently and after sitting in the plane for 5+ hours the flight was finally cancelled. But obviously we aren't upset about cancellation because safety should come first, a d it was bad out there. What I am upset about is that it was close to midnight, we were stranded with many others, no Hamilton John C. Munro Airport staff member was available to assist stranded passengers, no SWOOP representatives were available to assist the passengers, no email, no text, nothing. They simply abandoned their passengers, there were people with special needs as well, you think they received any assistance? Nope! Flying this airline is like driving your car through a Red light with your eyes closed. If nothing is coming across, you'll make it and you'll be fine, otherwise... Yikes!
Can you tell me whether passengers have to use stairs to board the plane? I live in Hamilton and have never used the airport here. I always fly from Toronto or Buffalo. My last Toronto experience was a nightmare. We're hoping to find a vacation spot leaving from Hamilton. I have mobility issues and would not be able to use stairs. Do they use a bridge/ramp for passengers to board and disembark?
Scott, you go to some awesome locations. Would love to see you expand on some of these places and show us what’s around, the arrival / exit experience, Hawaii and Edmonton to name a few would be awesome to see. Maybe not for the wider audience but for me definitely. 😂😂😂 Recommendations for places to stay, how to get to certain places. You’d be an awesome host.

You left us on a cliffhanger, did they let you in 😅. The livery reminds me of National Breast cancer awareness Month 🎀 there is not one thing other than the price that would entice me to fly with the Swoop👍
Actually, it was probably the smoothest (and most pain free) entrance to Canada I’ve ever experienced. It was almost shocking considering how difficult it’s been in the past. 😄

As always, another great review. I live in San Diego and have enjoyed that departure many times. Looks like you might have visited Qdoba Mexican restaurant, the foods not bad and is a good value especially at an airport. I’m an airline employee and share your confusion with the face masks, I’m tired of wearing them but without doubt they protect you from all types of possible infections, but there still uncomfortable.
I think it would only make sense now for you to move from Swoop Airline to Scoot Airline 🤣. Scoot ( based in Singapore and owned by Singapore Airlines but low cost and has planes and an advert style that will remind you of Spirit!😂) . Glad to see you back in the international skies .
Thanks Lin! I actually enjoyed Scoot when I flew them in 2020 (and not because Scoot is almost spelled like Scott 😄). Can’t wait to try their 787 someday!
@@sanspotter well I recommend Scoot on down to Perth western Australia on their 787 and spend some time here flying on our awesome array of old Fokkers 😂😂 , we got about 40 here to choose from 😂😂
Are you serious?!?! As a Canadian living in Edmonton (Working for Swoops competitor) TSA and US customs are so freaking rude! Customs in Canada is so simple and polite. I hate going through customs and security in the states. (As I type this from FLL.)
What did you do in Edmonton, Scott? I took Via Rail once from Toronto to Vancouver - it stops in Edmonton. There's a downtown Edmonton airport near the train station. On it was parked a very old USAir B737 that someone must have purchased for personal use and not changed the livery yet. Was a strange site.
I definitely agree. I’ve been wanting to do the Air Canada 737 max 8 from San Diego to Toronto for a while now, but they want something like $2500 for a one-way business class ticket. I refuse to do that. 🙅🏼♂️
Yeah those Canadian border agents are no joke. Had a (female) friend get stopped and held up in Toronto for hours by them simply because she was “acting suspicious” and they thought she could be a victim of human trafficking
When I first started watching, I thought you said SCOOT Airlines! Their names are so similar! And the liveries are pretty similar too, except Scoot now has this butt ugly yellow! I have to wonder- how much do you really save on these ULCCs? I priced a ticket from SYR--ATL, and the price ended up being more than a legacy carrier. As a girl, I can't get by with just a backpack. If I'm staying somewhere a couple three days, I need at least a carryon. Maybe I'm doing everything wrong. But I noticed it's hard to get a round trip ticket, unless you stay at least a week, and even then, it's dicey. So what do you do, buy two one way tickets? Wow! I think ULCC are very confusing! No wonder I prefer to fly Delta. I don't like feeling stupid!
I’ve actually had pretty good luck buying one way tickets everywhere I go (despite what we hear about it being more expensive). It all depends on individual circumstances though, so it does take some experimenting with different options when booking tickets. And you’re totally right about the average cost - most of the time, once you factor in things like checked bags and seat pre-selection, it’s not that much cheaper.
Never heard of Swoop...I agree, cool name and cool logo. Seems they have the "Spirit Airlines" motto down, charge more for nothing. Cool you got the whole row. As a larger person...I enjoy when that happens. I'll normally try to do the JetBlue Even more space seats or business class if I can justify it, so I'm not annoying anyone but me (unless flying with the girlfriend, then I'll annoy her). Been thinking about a trip to western Canada....but it's just a thought right now. Maybe in 2023? I agree on the mask, keep wearing it and avoid the sickness sharing. Don't care what those airlines say about their ventilation....sit next to someone with a cold/flu for hours, you have a great chance of getting it, unless masked up. Simple, easy, review. Nice!
I agree with you about the ventilation! The best filtering system in the world will do no good if the person next to you (or behind) is coughing and sneezing. Anyway, go to Canada if you can! It’s beautiful up there pretty much all year round.
How do Canadian's deal or cope with no frills carrier's like Swoop (how many business hours at the Westjet (still call themselves low cost. NOT) boardroom to come with "swoop" or Air Canada's disgrace LCC "Rouge" to satisfy the French in their boardroom? We are hook line and sinkerd as you never know if the Mainline Carrier is going to Rouge You or Swoop you with no warning or refund. It's a mess up here. Stick with AC and avoid WS. Neither are good anyways.

You listen to explicit music???????
😬😬😬
@@sanspotter thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions. You really helped me make better sense of things. I'm so grateful!
“Eh”? Groan. Enough of Canadian stereotypes. We don’t all say it.
Lol at least they recline…
yes that was too early for a canadian pun
How do Canadian's deal or cope with no frills carrier's like Swoop (how many business hours at the Westjet (still call themselves low cost. NOT) boardroom to come with "swoop" or Air Canada's disgrace LCC "Rouge" to satisfy the French in their boardroom? We are hook line and sinkerd as you never know if the Mainline Carrier is going to Rouge You or Swoop you with no warning or refund. It's a mess up here. Stick with AC and avoid WS. Neither are good anyways.
I am so sorry that swoop has invaded the us.
