This is really my first time actually hearing Mary sing and idk why ppl are saying she couldn’t sing. Her voice was golden. She could have definitely sang some leads.
Those who were not leads of the group are always downplayed. Mary had a nice voice and probably would've fared well in a group with more soulful songs.
Mary went through three different stages as a lead singer: The Diana Ross Era (1962-1970): She had a low, smokey range which stood in contrast to her fellow members Diana Ross, Florence Ballard and Cindy Birdsong. It was solid voice but was still a work in progress The Jean Terrell Era (1970-1973): Mary's voice was now more mature and had an added sultry layer to it. Her confidence as a lead singer was building up as she was given more solos to do The Scherrie Payne Era (1973-1977): This is where Mary finally emerged as a fully-fledged leading vocalist. Her voice is at its peak and she's able to show both her vocal range and her versatility as a singer. This is reflected in the material that's she given and she raises to the occasion.
I had the pleasure and privilege of seeing Ms. Wilson perform in Detroit in 2012. It was such a wonderful show! I took my mom, who joined other audience members in performing “Stop in the Name of Love“ with the Supreme legend.

@@bosskat57There were so many great songs from the Promises Kept sessions: Tears Left Over, Still Water, Take Your Dreams Back...shame they weren’t released at the time
That sultry sexy voice. Mary brought a class and sophistication to her vocals. Gordy really should've allowed Mary and Flo more opportunities to take the lead on at least one track each on every Supremes album. It would've broadened the groups appeal and their repertoire. Diana's voice is distinctive but on many album cuts it doesn't suit the arrangement- too harsh and piercing- so many of those tracks would've been so much better with Mary or Flo. The group would also have been taken far more seriously by music critics if all 3 contributed more to the sound.
IMO Lyric Mezzo. Her voice seemed to get even richer and bolder in the 80s/90s - she has Tina Turner-esque belts on her solo song "One Night With You".
She was a contralto. She sang the bottom note. Female contraltos are most commonly called tenors. Mezzo sopranos are altos that can hit soprano notes Hence mezzo meaning middle, being the voice type in the middle, higher than tenor, lower than soprano.
@DeVante Cooley I agree with you, but I have to add that with Mary as lead, The Supremes would have sounded very similar to The Marvelettes. Berry wasn't looking for a copycat group, and placing Diana in the lead gave the Supremes a very unique and never-to-be-duplicated sound.
MS ROSS voice not suited to background vocals...MARY really comes into her own on the extended version of HE'S MY MAN ..this track was very popular in NYC gay bars 1975/6

So much of what has come out since MW passed is that it was motivated by $ and the “sound” he was looking for. They went for the good instead of equity and broadness of style. Flo, with a bit more time and nurturing, would have evolved into an Ella or Sarah. When you listen to the early stuff, pre “Let me go the right way “ and “When the lovelight....” their sound was generic, indistinguishable and unimpressive. The combo of H-D-H and Diana as lead gave them their “niche sound” it unfolded as a perfect storm, to move Flo out. Still so sad about that. Grateful for their music. As you listen to again, so timeless and evocative. ❤️❤️❤️. RIP FB, MW,
I think it was so unfair and cruel how Mary and Florence were treated in that group. I heard in an interview how at one point, they were told they were no longer going to be allowed to sing leads anymore. All of the main leads were given to Diane when she was pushed to the front. In my opinion Mary and Florence had better singing voices than Diane!!! Rest in Heaven, Queen Mary!!!💜🕊👑🎶🌹🎤😇❤
Mary and Flo have no #1 hits singing lead, it was only when Diana became a lead singer that they started having #1 hits, if Mary was so talented big record labels could have been chasing after her after she left the Supremes.
@@5thdimensio284 but people always seem to leave out that when Diana was made the official lead, Berry also at the same time assigned his #1 hit-making team of HDH to the Supremes. The fans always seem to leave that out, or maybe they're just ignorant to that fact. But, it was then that the hits started topping the charts until around mid-1967 when HDH left Motown and started their own record company, Invictus. All of a sudden the Supremes with Diana on lead stopped hitting the top of the charts as frequently. Instead, acts like Freda Payne, Honey Cone, and Chairman of the Board were now taking HDH songs to the top of the charts, not Diana and the Andantes or whoever. I said all that to say; who knows what would have happened had HDH been assigned to write songs for a Flo or Mary at the beginning of their assignment with the Supremes. Nobody really knows. One must keep in mind that before HDH was assigned to the Supremes, the girls had released about 9 stinkers that bombed or didn't make the charts, and Diana was the lead on a lot of them. Please, give credit where credit is due.
@@5thdimensio284 The Supremes had several singles with Diana as lead that failed to chart before the Holland-Dozier-Holland era. DJ: I'm a huge fan of The Supremes and of Mary personally, and even I never knew she sang so many leads in their early repertoire. Listening here, I was surprised at how full and strong Mary's voice was on their early recordings. The thing that jumps out at me is the influence of the Diana-led Supremes on Mary's singing. Mary was a belter in the early sixties, almost like a Darlene Love with the control of a Whitney Houston. As years went on, you can hear a softening of Mary's solo style, which I think she did to fit with the softer style of the group. My guess is that Berry chose Diana to lead because of the distinctness of her voice. Mary could have easily sang lead in the Marvelettes, and I'm sure Berry wasn't looking for a copycat of them. Mary's voice was also consistent with several other popular girl groups of the early 60s. It would be Diana who gave the group an instantly recognizable sound that could never be duplicated.
Berry explained it ! The name Diana Ross and the Supremes meant they could be sold as two entities ! Eg Smokey Robinson and the Miracles , Martha and the Vandellas , Gladys Knight and the Pips !
Can you imagine if Phyllis Hyman was the lead singer in the Supremes? I always thought Flo had the best voice , then Mary. Ross’s voice to me is like nails on chalk board. Jean even had better voice.
Gordy was an a-hole, he should of allowed Mary Wilson version of 'Our Day Will Come and People Who need People, Falling in Love ,You're just to good to be true, not the gospelly numbers, god but appropriate for church, not mainstream, but the more pop swing numbers she recorded they were perfection, shame on him
Florence Ballard was the strongest singer. But once Diane and Barry started dating he envision Diane to be the groups focus / lead singer because he was in love with her. He wanted his lady on top and he got his way. Dianes career as a solo artist overperformed in all aspects of music, acting, fashion tv etc.

Actually Flo could sing too!!
You also forget long gone lover

Berry explained it ! The name Diana Ross and the Supremes meant they could be sold as two entities ! Eg Smokey Robinson and the Miracles , Martha and the Vandellas , Gladys Knight and the Pips !
I've always liked Mary's voice...but it didn't matter; Berry could only see Diana!
Very nice but I would also include NathayJones and Give up (but don’t give out)
Mary was a much better singer than Barry EVER gave her credit for. It was ultimately a missed opportunity, and she suffered for it.
Can you imagine if Phyllis Hyman was the lead singer in the Supremes?
I always thought Flo had the best voice , then Mary. Ross’s voice to me is like nails on chalk board. Jean even had better voice.
Gordy was an a-hole, he should of allowed Mary Wilson version of 'Our Day Will Come and People Who need People, Falling in Love ,You're just to good to be true, not the gospelly numbers, god but appropriate for church, not mainstream, but the more pop swing numbers she recorded they were perfection, shame on him
IMO she sings a lot better than #DianaRoss.☝🏽😌
Stop lying to yourself and others.
@@Eriq7001 I think you people blame Diana Ross for everything, you think she responsible for the bad weather in TEXAS?
@DeVante Cooley RIGHT!....... :-)
I think Mary sings good in the 1970s
Take diana voice out and just do the background
You'll have nothing!!!!!
We loved Mary but truth be told she ruined many a song
On the Farewell album you can hear Diana gasp in disgust at Mary's screeching vocals
