Sometimes life just happens and puts you in a position where you have to try something new. Rodney found himself in that place about 6 years ago, and he found the tiny home lifestyle. A few years later, he met his wife Marcel, and they have since built a home together that they rent out in the summer. During the summer, they take the time to reset, get rid of things they haven't used all year, and enjoy their tiny home. They have built a beautiful life together, and they love sharing their home with people in Seward, Alaska.

Shed Tiny House conversions seem to be a growing trend. Is this something you are considering?

We could spend more time with loved ones, travel the world, develop new skills, grow in wisdom, and learn thoroughly about whatever interests us, to our heart’s content . Is such a desire unnatural? You can reverse the handles and hinges on the refrigerator so the door open from the opposite side. It would make things a lot more convenient taking things out of the frig and putting them on the counter.

So glad you said this. It drove me nuts to see that, but some people don't know you can reverse them.
Exactly what I'm thinking of doing. 15-20k for this, vs 250k+ for a house is a no brainer for me personally. It can always become a guest house down the road. The housing market is out of control, and alternatives like this allow people another option besides paying ridiculous prices. Something like this costs maybe 2 years or less of paying rent.
You can build this same shed for no more than $7000 actually and a piece of land in a decent area is about five to $10,000 so yeah you’re right about $15-$20,000 for the land and the house. It’s an absolute no-brainer I feel people who spent 250,000 or more for house are literally brain dead. The only time you should spend that much for a house is if you can literally buy it upfront in cash and you just have so much money to burn that you don’t know what to do with it.
Taking 30 years to pay something off does not mean you can afford it but for whatever reason people think that that’s normal or acceptable behavior. Keep in mind a $250,000 house on a 30 year mortgage comes up to about $800,000 if you factor in taxes and interest rate. Imagine paying $800,000 for a house that cost $40,000 to build.
People keep voting in democrats. They keep opening the border and illegals live in a house with multiple other families. They might have a 2 bedroom house for 600 or 800a month and have 5 different families there. So they're literally splitting the rent 10 different ways and are OK working for 9 bucks an hr. So we all suffer.
@MobileAura 200k is a good investment on a house. Homes are literally one of the few things that increase in value over the decades. The only surefire way to do that other than real estate is gold and silver.
@@JoshuaTraffanstedt Any type of home, small or large will increase in value. Not just stick built large homes. Not being in debt for 20+ years is more important to most than an "investment" that you'll die before you get to enjoy. Seen it happen to too many family members. Most will die with a mortgage

I miss Alaska, i grew up in Homer and spent. most of my working career in Anchorage. I came to Washington state for awhile but due to back injury I will be here for the duration of my life

We (my wife and I) have 30+ acres in northern Minnesota we are building our final home on, but with numerous delays. So I'm planning a small house or cabin until the house is done and yours looks like a fine example of what I had in mind. Thanks for the tour and explanation of what's inside.
Everything about the layout is all that I could ever want or need and it doesn't look like I'd feel cramped like most of the rectangle trailer style tiny homes I've looked at.. Definitely a place I'd love to call home and where my heart would be oh so happy. Thanks for sharing and I hope that all is well with you and yours. Goes for everyone reading this comment as well. I lived in Alaska 80"s. Seward is a fantastic beautiful place. I love it there in those days and just a beautiful,tranquail,calm place. Thank you and enjoy.
If you take down your current closet, you can build a staircase (with a rail) on that wall and the closet underneath it with doors. It would still have to be a little steep because of the front door but it wouldn’t be that bad. Another idea is to add a cat walk over the living room to get to the other loft which could be the closet, opening up the space downstairs. You could get ladder that isn’t so steep (still move it to the wall) and add a small table and two chairs underneath.
You can use a pretty fabric and cover the closet. (Like a shower curtain)✌️

me personally, Id get rid of that clothing area and build stairs there and put the storage under it for the clothes etc, that will also remove the ladder from the middle of the walkway.

Yep, understair-storage is great.
Yup, because the older you get the more difficult it will be trying to get up the ladder. Plus you can have a deep staircase that can begin right at the front door when you walk in you can either towards the living area or straight upstairs to the bedroom. Then all the clothes can be stored under the stairs, with built in shelves/drawers and behind the front door you can have a couple of hooks for a place for hanging jackets.

Suggestion: If you hang another rod in front of the coats then go and pick out some fabric from hobby lobby (closed on Sundays), not sure if you guys have one over there, you can pick out whatever type of fabric you want and it becomes a jerry-rig door of sorts. :)
you can do that or can get an outside blind and roll up and down. outside ones would probably be wider.

That shape of roof design, as opposed to just V shaped, gives a lot more room in the loft. If they were shorter people, you could make downstairs have a lower roof, like the living room where you're sitting anyway, and make more headroom upstairs. I'd leave the kitchen and bathroom full standing height.

You inspired me to build my shed. Unfortunately I ordered my lumber from Lowes and got complete junk. They failed to pick it up as well. My dream is mostly ruined but I will try and salvage what I have. I'm going to Home Depot from for future lumber.
Buy from you local lumber yard and stay away from Lowes and Home Depot.
It's really beautiful and I love the fact that you could achieve something so nice on a budget. In a lot of other videos, I see people sinking like $80k worth of materials into their tiny homes which to me is ridiculous, but great video. Thanks for the tour!!

What a nice, genuine, and inspiring man. Life is all about the simple things. This is a perfect example of not needing the most extravagant materialistic items to have a happy fulfilled life. I aspire to live this way with my fiancé in our future once we have enough saved to move out of our apartment.
I live in Sitka, and yes, we get a lot of rain, too. I have as small covered deck (about the size of yours) and I even love it in the winter. There is nothing like sitting outside all bundled up and drinking hot cocoa and watching the snow fall. My cat appreciates this also. She has her own blanketed chair out there. We are surrounded by wilderness; there is no reason why it has to start at our back door. A covered deck is a small but very meaningful luxury.

Totally agree about the covered deck in SE Alaska! I'm in Sitka. Our winters are not as long and cold as yours, but still it is so nice to be able to sit outside all year round. Half of my 10 X 20 deck is enclosed for a hot house to grow tomatoes, the other half is seating. I had a corrugated plastic roof, but I replaced it with that double walled plastic. It still is opaque enough to see the rain and snow falling while I sit comfortably under it on my chair. But I don't worry so much about snow load on it. Cute cabin.
I live 80 miles from him. A window Ac unit is really nice to have in Alaska. I got one used. Especially when the wild fires send smoke on hot dry summers. Even a homeade 12v swamp cooler would cool it down enough to sleep on those nights.
I've watched a lot of videos about tiny houses but this may be one of the best executed homes I've ever seen. And it makes excellent sense for how it is being used.
Only living in it part-time makes sense to me. I had a small house, less than 700 sqft, and loved it. But after a while you just feel so cramped.
Also, a porch is an absolute necessity with a tiny home! You have to be able to spread out and feel the room to breath!
IMHO I would have made the ladder adjustable so you could pull it out so it wasn’t as steep. I’m getting older, too, and that’s quite a climb.
Definitely have to have a king size bed! We use a memory foam bed but we’ve discovered we want different firmnesses and my side broke down (I felt) faster than my wife’s. So our next purchase I’m gonna buy two twin XLs! That way we can get two different firmnesses and if mine breaks down faster again I can replace it without disturbing her side of the bed. I never liked seeing older couples move into different rooms like my grandparents did (but of course there are reasons).

Was in Seward with my son 3 1/2 yrs ago. Went on a cruise to see the glaciers. It was drizzly all the way to our destination up to a mile away and the clouds parted the sun came out and lit up the glacier. It was so breathtakingly beautiful. Best vacation I've ever had.
Wherever I live, I have to have a bathtub. I have issues, connective tissue disorder. I pop out of socket all the time or as they call it sub-laxing. I also have issues with my kidney throwing out a lot of my nutrients. I need to take magnesium baths. It's a must. Not only for my own comfort but for my health. If you asked me okay you have one thing a shower or a bathtub which one would you choose. Hands down the bathtub. My mother bought an antique row house. Her house is much different than everyone else's. Incredible bathroom. It was a shower, but it was also a short soaking tub. But here's the cool thing, it filled up. You couldn't completely lie down in it, but you could soak. My mother could sit in it and fill it up too her shoulders. Whoever built it was genius. It was made out of all tile. Had a very beautiful shell seat, and shell pedestals so that when you were shaving it was easy to place your foot. Specialty places to put shampoo and conditioner. Holders for razors. Everything was made out of porcelain...
Incredible bathroom it was just so beautiful. Had one of the toilets that you had to pull down the long string with the tassel on it. Using gravity to flush. It was really a smart toilet, especially because it didn't use a lot of water.
Pedestal sink, with the same matching Shell theme that they used inside of the shower. It was done in a pastel peach, cream, as well as had the most precious little details all over the bathroom. It was like a spring scene without being very busy. Bluebirds, roses peach of course. 3D art. Placed in distinctive places in the bathroom. As a matter of fact you would go in there, and come out going oh my gosh there's so many neat little things in your bathroom. I loved it.
Quite off topic and odd story. My parents actually moved the bathroom down to the other end of the hall. My grandfather built a false wall and a beautiful wardrobe that actually looked like it came out of the wall but it didn't. Yeah my step dad was in a straight and narrow type of fellow if you can catch my drift without saying. They actually use that bathroom, to hold things we're not legally allowed to have.
One day I had to go to the bathroom went to the bathroom and the crazy thing is I actually use the old bathroom. I called and screamed from my mom. Panicked I was like Mom I just use the bathroom. She said okay? And I'm like no no the old bathroom. She said impossible. I said yeah that's what I thought. After I used it I realized wait it doesn't exist anymore. I said smell my hands. My mom when we purchased the house, everything that the people owned was in the house. Apparently the wife loved these little shell soaps. She had like 2,000 of them. We were never without them. And in the new bathroom my mom didn't bring in the Shell theme. So she stopped using those. They were actually downstairs in the basement and our storage area.
I said smell my hands. They smell like violets. And they indeed did. Now. The people that own the home. Wonderful couple. Sadly the elderly lady died of leukemia, the husband hung the dog in the bathroom. Only later did we find I was right it's an Irish setter. We didn't own an Irish setter. We had poodles. Huge difference. The downstairs basement, 9 science lab tables kind of like in science school. The big wooden tables with the black surfaces. As far as I could see all kinds of different beakers and testing things. On the wall the most amazing collection of rare moths. A bumblebee bigger than my hand. Two-headed snakes, actually a rat with two bodies but one back end. Tons of things in formaldehyde. I swear there was a little tiny head. I didn't know if it was a baby but it looked like an old man. Tiny. Like the size, of a baseball.
My mother gave the science tables away to the local high school. And all of his collection which I was really angry at her for. She donated it to the Pittsburgh science museum. We later found this man was a professor. He worked with the Carnegie group.
Every time you would go downstairs you would feel him literally go through you. That was his heaven he loved downstairs. And my mother redid the basement into a really large living room. A huge walk-in closet for her. She didn't have a closet upstairs in the living room that she made into her bedroom. And when you would first come down the stairs a very large bathroom and a place to wash your clothes and hang things to dry.
When she first bought the place, we were having people come in and paint and fix things in my mom asked if it was possible if we could keep the old vintage carpet it had a crazy brown stain and she didn't know how to get it out. He said man they didn't tell you. Well the wife had passed away of leukemia and the dog that they had, the gentleman hung it in the shower. And then he proceeded to, take care of himself in the kitchen. They use the wrong cleaning product which actually that stain will never come out. I can't tell you, how haunted this place was. Just the dog and the elderly man.
My mom has a best friend. Her and i, we're both gifted. I kept telling my mom, there's a man here. And Irish setter dog. My mom had brought the vacuum from upstairs which we had an apartment. She hadn't used it yet or plugged it in. The door opens and it's my mom's best friend who I call Aunt kim. I kept telling her, who's this old man mama? And this dog is so cute. It's so pretty and red.
My mom's friend would not step in and she said oh my God who's that man. Awww he has a dog. What a beautiful Irish setter. My mom looks at me and goes oh my God. You just said that. I said I know I did he's just standing there. He proceeds to grab the handle of the vacuum. To my mama she don't see him but Aunt Kim and I do. It turns on and starts coming across the kitchen floor in my eyes I see him vacuuming. And one fell swoop my mom grabs me and we're running out the door. Nice of what are you running from he's vacuuming. That's nice, she said the cord is wrapped up. We run out in our PJs and went and stayed at Kim's house for the night. The next morning we had a priest come and pray over the house. Kim wouldn't step foot in our house. That didn't do anything. The old man just laughed.
I had a serious talk with him and told him hey look if you're going to live here you're going to be nice. I had to correct him many of times. He loved to lock me in the basement when my mom would go to the grocery store. And she would leave me. I would beg so chill out I was fine on my own. You would hear the ball being thrown across the floor. We had a standard and a petite poodle. the standard one would shake like a leaf at the bottom of the stairs. And then my little one, she would just growl and snarl. In my mind's eye I could see the man, telling me go ahead and try and open that door. I'll lock it. I'd always try to wait and think that I could trick him but of course not. Slap slap slap. We had a pin lock that had to have another piece put into it and then a round u piece that went on it. My mama would come in every time hollering for me, to help her put away groceries. And I'd say you got to unlock the door. Finally around the third time, isn't that always the charmer. You start to see the pattern. My mom stops and looks at me and says wow. You can't get your hand under or over that door. I said yep told you. You're not locking that door. I said you have I told you. She said, this is real. I said finally are you just now cluing in on this.
My stepdad was a bully mean man. When we be coming down the stairs, he would always trip him. My mama had just had my brother. And he was coming down the stairs with him. And he almost fell. Same way he slipped every time. He went upstairs and left me with my brother. I hollered out don't you dare ever ever trip him when he's coming down the stairs with my brother and his hands. How dare you do that. He's an innocent child. I don't like that man either, if he has my brother in his hands you leave him be. But if he is walking on his own please, keep it up I like that. Make them fall. I swear every time that man came down the stairs. He would fall every single time. But he never fell with my brother and his hands. This ghost was like a grandfather to me I felt. At first he was a cantankerous man. But then, I really feel he truly liked us living there.
I was 29 years old and I had a dream. I was taken back to that house. Walking down stairs and his basement lair. And orb comes in Gold beautiful. I know it's him. I said do you remember me? He spun me around in a circle and he says of course I do, he said I've been following you this whole time. You taught me a lot. And I watched over you. And I still will watch over you. But you made me realize, I'm not going to hell for what I did. And, you're right. My wife is waiting for me. In that same moment a beautiful open light portal came in, his dog was walking with his wife. They greeted each other. I can literally tell you exactly what they look like and what they were wearing.
I called my mom and I explained to her. Mom that old man, I helped him move over. I explained what he was wearing, a three-piece Tweed suit. A beautiful pocket watch. A beautiful crisp white collared shirt. He had long white beautiful curly hair in the back. And the front of it was split but combed on each side. And his wife, a beautiful wrap dress. Kind of the color of avocado. It reminded me of something that you would wear in the 50s. She handed him a fedora with this beautiful feather in it, it was speckled black and white with orange on top. My mom said oh my gosh. I don't have it anymore. But I never let you see any photographs of the guy after I found out what had happened. You just described the outfit that they were wearing in the photograph.
That house went up for sale not too long ago. Oh be still My heart. It wouldn't be the same without him.

I grew up in Kenai in the 80's and my best friends parents had a converted shed similar to this. We turned it into a party barn. Drank a lot of beer in that thing. Lol, Good times.
Great little cabin in a great place 👌🏼 the only thing I'd change if poss is switch out the ladder and build in a staircase against the wall, with the clothes and shoe storage built into each step.
Yeah. If the distance is too short along that one wall, maybe they could run the stairs behind the couch and then up one wall.
Maybe even a removable ladder that could hang on a wall.
They must REALLY love each other!

A tapestry curtain. To cover up your closet, and a matching one for the loft.
When my dad was a kid in Germany, around 50 years ago, the place he lived at had a toilet with a teeny tiny sink in the corner.
Maybe add a little add-on for your bedroom, for when you're older, and you can't climb up the stairs anymore, or in case of injury.

When I had a 3500 sq ft house I just lived in it and now that I have about 200 I’m always thinking of ways to do stuff to it
I guess because we own them and when I had a regular home I looked at the payment as rent

brother , i've had my second stroke recently and i live in a 12x24' with 6'x12' deck in the front , dbl loft . I rent my home in Quebec and planning to sell but downsizing for me was a game changer but man , am i grateful for minimizing my hoard of possessions . granted I have a smaller shed for my stuff as well as some family members stuff . actually thinking of building another one as I purchased mine . nice vid and nice little home man .

For your closet area a nice fabric shower curtain would cover it nicely. Shower curtains come in many colors and patterns.
I would paint the bottom cupboards a color and I'd use a new painter's canvas with a cable to cover the clothing area. Perfect!
What a great job. It is very attractive and meets all of your basic needs. My only suggestion is a sink in the bathroom no matter how tiny. It's a matter of sanitation. No toilet germs should be allowed anywhere near a kitchen.
To cover the closet all you need is a long curtain rod and some light colored floor length curtains.
Paint those kitchen cupboards Barn Red! Would look awesome!!
I gotta say this is one of the nicest Shed Houses that Ive seen.

I have followed the tiny house movement as well as Van ife for over 15 years. Once stated that once I retired I would do either / or. well guess at 69 I'm still not retired. Perhaps one day?
Love your tiny house - just a note: you can reverse the fridge doors quite easily so they open toward kitchen.
I noticed the door hinge on the right which is inconvenient the way it is facing. Reversing the fridge door would make access so much easier in that kitchen.
Maybe it’s that way so it doesn’t bang the wall when you open it.
That looks much better than I expected, and the layout works really well. The handrails on the ladder make a big difference. You wouldn't think that they would, but I believe that they do.
Agree. What you’ve done with this shed is great; true craftsmanship. Every detail you and your wife added - makes it a home. The sense of accomplishment you have describing it is so well deserved. Life throws some tough stuff at us sometimes and you grabbed the ball and ran with it. Well done.

I have been watching a lot of tiny house. I love the fact that you have an actual living room with a TV & Xbox. I have been interested in small living. However, there are some creature comforts that I would not live without. Very impressed with your tiny house.

most fridges today, you can switch the doors so they open the other side - into the room, not the wall
With the fridge being right up against the extended wall on the left. If the door orientation was switched, the wall would prevent the door from opening past 90°. They’d have to pull the fridge out anytime they wanted to rearrange the shelves or when removing them for cleaning. Sometimes functionality has to win over aesthetics.
@@michelleybells but having fridge swing right way is part of functionality. If the doors swung the right way could just grab things and put on counter rather than opening and closing door every time to put things on counter. Still would be enough room to take out shelves also (even though that's not done very often)
