Duolingo can only take you so far. Good for the basics of vocabulary and grammar. Still, the best way to learn a new language is still the old-fashioned way. Learn it in a classroom with a teacher who is fluent in the language and lots of practice.
To be fair, in English you *might* sometimes have someone phrase the idea in this way. It wasn't a good translation of the Japanese, but most English speakers would interpret that statement as "this photo is [of] my grandma". Normally this phrasing would only happen when looking at a series of photos though. Like "This one is my dad [points at photo], and this photo is my grandma [points at photo]."
Honestly her english is quite good. She only makes some grammar mistakes, but her pronunciation and accent is very close to a native speaking in comparison to other members.
Yeah, Suisei is actually really good at some of the complex consonant phonemes, though like almost all japanese speakers, she still struggles with the nuances of American English vowels. American English has a LOT more vowels than Japanese.
Happened to me. I have lots of foreigner game friend and also I practice english, writing and speaking using books and also from english course. I tought I was good and could read anything in english, but then my pride got slapped real fucking hard when my lecturer gave me article about tax and economic in english.
