    This little tutorial saved me from making several mistakes (like removing the spring). I also was very reluctant to pull hard enough on those little tabs to pull the pads out. It then turned out that I had the same issue like was shown in the clip: The internal springs were bent. Thanks a lot for your help!

      @@BikeTeacher Yes, it took a little time to find your video because there are so many Avid brakes and youtube first pointed me to the wrong types. Meanwhile I managed to fix the brake, but there were a few more hurdles to overcome. I had bought noname pads at Amazon, but they did not properly fit. It took me a while to find out that the outer edges were too wide and I had to file them in shape. When I finally managed to get them in the brake kept chafing. I learned then that I had to open the screw at the handle and relief some of the pressure, I only had to dump a few drops of the brake liquid. Ok, this whole adventure took a lot more time than I had expected - but I learned a lot. Next time it will be a piece of cake ...

      @@BikeTeacher your vid showed on Google search. All I wanted to know was how that outer clip should be used. I had ancient NOS Avid Juicy 3s with congealed fluid clogging it up. Seized master piston pretty hard. Completely disassembled seals and all and found rubber parts in good shape unlike other old hydros I've torn down. If you think the pad system is goofy, try rebuilding Juicy masters with the stamped sheet metal levers and needing extra long skinny circlip pliers. At least parts exist. Shamanos are throwaways

    The pads have a R & L imprinted on them, the pad with the bent post should be R (Right) and to the right of the calliper.
    Ive also smeared some Bendix Blue Ceramic brake grease (tiny thin film) on the face and also a smal amount where the piston nub fits into thw back of the brake pad.
    Well smoother braking it seems.

    If only the spring was stronger and more resilient. I would love a set for both bikes made of titanium to force those pads & pistons back.

      I think that would solve a lot of pesky brake rubs.

    I have the Avid Juicy 5 brakes on a bike I purchased from Bikes Direct maybe 10 years ago. I probably have about 5 hours of light use on the bike. I have had the bike hanging supported by the handle bars and seat post in a garage for about 9 years. Have been riding a road bike mostly.I am in Wisconsin so it has gone through hot and cold of the seasons. I took the bike down and notice the brakes are binding pretty solid. There is no dirt or corrosion on the rotors. I am sure the pads are fine as everything was working fine when I put it in storage. Would I possibly just need to open the hyd system up and drain/bleed the brakes?

      Something got stuck or jammed. It could be happening in the lever, or the piston cups. A bleed may not be enough pressure to break the jammed part free. Sure it’s worth a shot. You could try to press the piston cups back into the caliper depending on their position. The piston or cylinder in the lever/resivoir. Probably not worth rebuilding.

      @@BikeTeacher After I inflated the tires I was able to roll the bike with the brakes just slightly binding. When I hit the levers it stops "BAM" and releases when I let the levers go (but still rubbing). In spring in this climate from metal being cold moisture condenses in the surfaces so I am thinking maybe after 8 years of this perhaps the break pads absorbed moisture and are slightly swollen. I will try to push the pistons in and maybe start by replacing the pads. The hydraulics seem to be working with no sponginess and being a closed system maybe the fluid did not absorb any moisture and is still ok. I have probably less than 15 miles on the bike.       I removed the calipers from the frame. Forced a plastic automotive trim removal tool into the caliper to spread the pads and loosened the bleeder screw on the lever. Fluid came out into a waiting rag and that did it!

      Sounds like some internal swelling. Normal for avid/sram

      @@BikeTeacher I guess after going through the hot and cold cycles for 8 or 9 years without ever actuating the lever somethings got to give! This bike has a Rock Shox Recon 351 and a Rock Shox Aria 2.R suspension. When I look up the manuals for those components I am seeing the year 2009 mentioned so that's more like 15 years. I'm 70 years old so believe me...times slips away! Thanks for the help. Your video walked me through removing the pads without destroying anything!

    I bought a parts bike just to take the avid juicy 5's off to put on my girlfriends bike. They definitely are both juicy 5's but i also noticed they have a different one of these springs in each of them, one looks like the one in the video and one doesnt...(edit- O im missing a top spring clip on that one). I see now..they still work somehow😂
    They both work but im now wondering what thats about😅.
    I do have a problem with slight rubbing on front and back, I havnt figured out how to adjust out the pads themselves to stop from being so tight in there..
    Theres gotta be a way right?
    Every other brake ive seen has a way to back off the pads a tiny bit.
    My rotors measure 1.7 and 1.8 in thickness..my bran new ones measure 1.9.. so when i put them on my problems going to be a bit worse if i cant adjust them..

      Yes, but shimano also have a lot of cons, i dont really know much about this brand or model, i got a used bike recently and all i know is that the front brake is rubbing and all shity and dont brake enough..... my xt v brakes brake way harder that are older than the bike.... so i will try to fix it if no i will go shimano

    The only reason the spring was rubbing is because they are so hard to fit
