You probably recognise it from the rap song "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss" by PM Dawn. Incidentally, in the video from that song, Tony Hadley (the singer) makes a cameo appearance.
The singer Tony Hadley, has one of the best voices in music over the last 40 years. His voice is better now at the age of 64 than it ever was....like a fine wine, has got better with age! If you watch Tony doing a medley of Spandau Ballet songs at Toppers in 2022, you'll see just what an amazing singer he is and what an amazing voice he has. He also happens to one of the nicest people within the industry.
You can call me "old" as much as you want... I was 10 when this came out. Being "old" means that i grew up with this and i wouldn't trade that for being in my 20's now 😉 Long Live The 80's!!! ❤
My favorite use of this in a movie is when Steve Buscemi sings it at the end of The Wedding Singer. Used in a lot of films from the 80’s and set in the 80’s.
Massive song back in the day at least in the uk,reminds me of hanging around the dance floor at the end of the night in a night club like billy no mates.😮💨😮💨
The mid-80s were great for this type of music. My favorite is "Captain of Her Heart" by Double from their "Blue" album. Every song on that album is fantastic!
A classic radio hit from the early 80s but not a band I ever did a deep dive into. I will be interested to hear more another great reaction. Glad you were able to place it. Look forward to anything more from NicknLex.
Wow! This is a longer version. I wasn’t aware of it. This is cool. These guys were big fans of Marvin Gaye. This was the referenced in the line “ Listening to Marvin all night long.”
I am always amazed at the music people have never heard. I suppose growing up we only had the radio and listened to everything and every kind of music. A lot of people now days seem to be just stuck in a particular genre and don't know what their missing by expanding their horizons. I listen to everything from Classic to Reggae and everything in between and music seems so richer for doing that.
Looking at reactions, it doesn't seem to matter what race you are,a diehard rap fan, whatever, this song has so many hooks in it. It's irresistible. You get into a feel good trance during it. Largely because of this I understand it's been used in dozens of movies over the years. The sax section comes in unexpectedly and lifts it again and I find the fade out particularly brilliant at the finish. I dance to this with my partner and let's just say we strengthen the pair bond after getting it's romantic vibe. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant.
Sampled my PM Dawn in the song "Set Adrift On Memory Bliss" where the lead singer Tony Hadley also featured. Wonderful time to be alive the 60's 70's and 80's for great music sadly today it is so rare to even find a song you can understand and sing along with..so to me this is the best era and will always be that way. Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘❤❤❤❤🎶🎶🎵🎵🎶🎶
Great sound production also. This was my music growing up , like totally gnarly dude. The 80s were so laid back everyone got along the guys and girls would roll down the windows in their cars and talk to each other while driving on a Saturday night cruising the strip. Totally awesome ! All of America was having fun. ❤ it was tripindicular ! Hey guys checkout Thompson Twins. ❤
There’s a short version. This is an album cut. There’s a radio and video cut that is shorter. Of course this was done because they wanted short versions of songs so they could get more songs on air.
This is an extended album version, the ending is somewhat shortened but still great and it doesn't cut out anything major. I also think that in most movies these songs are played you don't get much of them, just certain parts and then the movie takes back over. Through the Barricades is another amazing song by Spandau Ballet that I think Lex will know. Another song that was big and brings back memories for me, and I'm wondering if you or Lex would know, is Love is all Around by Wet Wet Wet. It's a little later, from the early 90s and was in a movie (although I don't think the song by the band is actually in the movie) but it's a song and was top of the singles charts here in the UK for quite a few weeks so be worth checking out, if you can get it past the blockers.
this is a great song, I love it, this version does sound a little different then the version I'm used to, Thank you so much NicknLex, the first time I heard this song was on MTV, the official video back in the 80's and it's never lost it's charm, I listen to it intently every time I hear it and sing along.
If my memory serves me right, this was playing in the background while Molly ringwald was crying in the hallway during the prom scene in 16 Candles. Seen this in a drive in with my GF, wow 😢now I feel old LOL.
Through the barricades is a great single and the first album Journeys to glory is really good I remember playing that album on tape coming back a from Blackpool weekend away here in the UK after a great time with my mates when 18 back in early 80’s ! Try those out guys I’m sure u will enjoy !
Yep she says it comes in handy when having any arguments with her husband … when she ends them by saying … well you never had someone write a famous love song about you !!’n
Temazo!!! Cortina musical de una radio en BsAs que, pasaban luego de medianoche, se dedicaban a pasar música de EEUU y Gran Bretaña. Saludos desde Temperley, BsAs.
great band, so many hits, so many epic songs like tears for fears! the Kemp brothers played the kray twins in a british movie about rutherless london gangs!
Fun fact, the guitarist of Spandau Ballet is playing together with Nick Mason old stuff of Pink Floyd from 1968 to 1970, his name is Gary Kemp, he is also an actor, his most prominent role was in "The Bodyguard" alongside of Whitney Houston in 1992 !!
By Gary Kemp's(the songwriter) own admission True was very influenced by Al Green's Let's Stay Together. They were very influenced by Roxy Music on the album True appeared on.
It was also in a luxury car commercial a few years back but don’t remember which car. A movie hit from a great film is "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head” (B. J. Thomas), from the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 1969.
The arrangement on this song is what makes it so amazing. A song is a song is a song, but this is just a musically beautiful piece of art. If you like this, try "Room In Your Heart" by Living In A Box, 1989. Similar, beautiful. Went to #5 in UK but America never found it. I'd love to get your reaction to that one.
Actually, this style of music came later in Spandau Ballet's Korea. In the first iteration, they were more like Klansman in the "New Romantic" years. I think you might like the song "chant number one" to show the contrasting style in their early career. I say "early "but it was only 1980/1981 when Spandau first hit the Charts. I think you will be very surprised.
Oh... me hicieron acordar a la época donde tenía cds con compilados de temas "lentos" que escuchaba en el auto y este era uno de mis preferidos. Para cantar el coro "i know this much is true..." a viva voz sola en el auto. Jaja. Gracias chicos por un lindo recuerdo.
Spandau Ballet very beautiful as was Tears for Fears. Also another awesome contemporary band at the time Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (song Enola Gay).
While this Classic is an absolute MUST HEAR,, Even MORE IMPORTANTLY it provides a truly valuable message for us ALL, Ralph McTell "Streets Of London" 🔥❤🔥
Funnily enough Freddie Mercury and Tony Hadley performed as Tony says pub style version of Presley 's Jailhouse Rock in Auckland New Zealand in1985 during Queen concert They were both drunk from partying hard before the show and forgotten most of the words. Freddie introducing Tony shouted You bastard You got me drunk 😂
I'm so glad you included this song, since I was obsessed with it back in the days when MTV was about playing music videos, hence the acronym! I love how the video is so simple, yet so beautiful. I always liked the clean-cut and the suit attire of the lead singer along with his AMAZING voice. I specifically love the mega zoom -out when the incredible sax starts playing. Very basic like I said, without any special effects yet beautiful in its simplicity. Great choice you guys. Love from dad 💗
Lex, you seem to like dancing... I did a lot of dancing in the clubs in Toronto in the seventies and eighties. Here's a few favourites The Spoons. Romantic Traffic (FM bass player) RiughTrade High School Confidential And for Nic.... David Wilcox Do the Bearcat !
True and Gold (which you have said you will review) are probably SBs biggest hits. Gold has also been used in countless films and adverts. But Through the Barricades is a beautiful song, not as popular, but should not be missed. I have seen others mention it already in the comments.
Not that either band influenced each other but I get some Tears for Fears vibes from this. And being a 13 year old in 83 , we really had some great artists and music. !
Hola! Saludos.
A great tune that you both should listen to is "I can feel him in the Morning" by Grand Funk Railroad. You would never guess it was them. Their early days. Great tune
Spandau Ballet has an association with Wham. See below. Both bands and Tears for Fears 😨 are British 🇬🇧. Released in 1983. In the movie 🎥 16 Candles 🕯 starring Molly Ringwald in 1984. Sampled by PM Dawn in the sing Adrift on Memory Bliss in Year 1991. Credits for the album True. Produced by Spandau Ballet, Steve Jolley and Tony Swain. Written by Gary Kemp. In the video, he is in piano 🎹 In studio 🎙, he is on guitar 🎸 while Jess Bailey is on piano 🎹. Different musicians are on keyboards while on tour. Martin Kemp, younger brother of Gary Kemp, is on bass guitar 🎸. He was married to Shirlie Hollliman of Wham. They are in the video Last Christmas 🎄 in 1984. Steve Norman on saxophone 🎷. John Keeble on drums 🥁. Spandau Ballet on backing vocals. Suggested video 📹: Spandau Ballet performs Highly Strung.
You probably recognise it from the rap song "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss" by PM Dawn. Incidentally, in the video from that song, Tony Hadley (the singer) makes a cameo appearance.
The subtle details in the music is mad genius
The singer Tony Hadley, has one of the best voices in music over the last 40 years.
His voice is better now at the age of 64 than it ever was....like a fine wine, has got better with age!
If you watch Tony doing a medley of Spandau Ballet songs at Toppers in 2022, you'll see just what an amazing singer he is and what an amazing voice he has.
He also happens to one of the nicest people within the industry.
What an amazing voice.
Freddy Mercury ? No way !! This song was sampled by PM Dawn in 1990 “ Set adrift to memory bliss “ that’s what you find familiar .
Thanks for playing the full album version.
Sure brings back memories.
You can call me "old" as much as you want... I was 10 when this came out. Being "old" means that i grew up with this and i wouldn't trade that for being in my 20's now 😉
Long Live The 80's!!! ❤
Welcome to the New Romantic age of music in the UK in the late 70,s and into the 80,s. Spandau brought out some amazing songs, this being one of them.
Bet you would like the group ABC and their hits The Look of Love and Poison Arrow. Contemporary of Spandau Ballet.
"Through the barricades " is a GREAT song of SB.
One of my all time favorite songs
Yes this!!!! Barricades is phenomenal!
Yes!!! Probably my favorite Spandau song. "Gold" is great too, and "Fight For Ourselves"
Sampled in the late 90’s by PM Dawn on their R & B hit “Set Adrift On Memory Bliss”. Great tune as well.
My favorite use of this in a movie is when Steve Buscemi sings it at the end of The Wedding Singer. Used in a lot of films from the 80’s and set in the 80’s.
Me too!!
Massive song back in the day at least in the uk,reminds me of hanging around the dance floor at the end of the night in a night club like billy no mates.😮💨😮💨
Great to hear the longer album version. Haven't heard that in a while.
Was number 1 in the UK charts for a long time back in the day they were very popular here...
The mid-80s were great for this type of music. My favorite is "Captain of Her Heart" by Double from their "Blue" album. Every song on that album is fantastic!
I loved this song from my youth!! The lyricism is top tier
This was all over MTV back in the day.
80s music will always be awesome !!!!!
Another great tune from Spandau Ballet is : Only When You Leave among many others.
Need to check out the song Gold by them next
I am always amazed at the music people have never heard. I suppose growing up we only had the radio and listened to everything and every kind of music. A lot of people now days seem to be just stuck in a particular genre and don't know what their missing by expanding their horizons. I listen to everything from Classic to Reggae and everything in between and music seems so richer for doing that.
Also featured in the movie "The Wedding Singer" with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. "This much is true ooh hooh, Robbie and Juliaaa.."
To cut a long story short is my favourite the BASS IS KILLER
Met the lead singer Tony Hadley on an LA film set...super nice and humble guy.
Was never a Spandau fan. But, this track and Gold are really good pop tracks.
Looking at reactions, it doesn't seem to matter what race you are,a diehard rap fan, whatever, this song has so many hooks in it. It's irresistible. You get into a feel good trance during it. As you mentioned, this was the closing song of the album, so they let it run a bit long to leave the listener a feeling of what (s)he had just heard.
This song creates such a beautiful atmosphere. Thank you both for covering everything from brand new to the classics. ❤
This is an extended album version, the ending is somewhat shortened but still great and it doesn't cut out anything major. When I hear this band I think of the 60s band the association. Very similar sound.
Lex needs to watch the video 👍
Yes, I agree! Very basic but beautiful!

Gary Kemp admitted the inspiration for the song was Claire Grogan the singer from Altered Images who he had a crush on.
Yep she says it comes in handy when having any arguments with her husband … when she ends them by saying … well you never had someone write a famous love song about you !!’n
@@Reba-123 That's fantastic.
Temazo!!! Cortina musical de una radio en BsAs que, pasaban luego de medianoche, se dedicaban a pasar música de EEUU y Gran Bretaña. Saludos desde Temperley, BsAs.
OMG Lex !!!!
“50 First Dates”
That movie makes me cry with laughter !!!
Chicos. Este es un verdadero himno...y esa voz. Porfavor.

There is also a podcast on RUclips where Gary Kemp talks with musicians, last week was episode with Mark Knopfler....
Not just the guitarist but the main songwriter and leader of SB
By Gary Kemp's(the songwriter) own admission True was very influenced by Al Green's Let's Stay Together. They were very influenced by Roxy Music on the album True appeared on.

Me transporta a mis 13/14 años.i love the song! and trough the barricades
Whenever I switch on my Mac, the boot-up chime always makes me think of the intro to this track.
While this Classic is an absolute MUST HEAR,, Even MORE IMPORTANTLY it provides a truly valuable message for us ALL,
Ralph McTell "Streets Of London" 🔥❤🔥
If you're doing classic 80s pop, you have to do Absolute by Scritti Politti.
A journey through the past for me. I was 18 when this came out and explored the world of romantic moments...
Early 80s in the UK you were either a Duran Duran fan or Spandau Ballet, Gold was another big hit from them.
This is a good song. I’ve heard this on the radio quite a bit when it first came out.
friends of sade and her band... great time and a great sound!
PM DAWN SAMPLED THIS to make their song SETADRIFT ON MEMORY BLISS!!!💯👍😊
"Through The Barricades" 👌👌
I'm so glad you included this song, since I was obsessed with it back in the days when MTV was about playing music videos, hence the acronym! I love how the video is so simple, yet so beautiful. Great to read you!! Love you!! 🥰
Both guitarist are brothers .. Martin and Gary Kemp went on to be also actors and played the Kray twins in the 1999 movie The Krays movie
"...listening to Marvin all night long..." ...yesssss...I can do that....a reference to Marvin Gaye.
Best SB song through the barricades....brilliant cheers 🍺🍺
Fun fact: The Brothers Kemp went on to dip their toes in the acting pool, and the film titled The Krays is well worth seeing.
😊 ThX & Cheers guys
Lex, you seem to like dancing...
I did a lot of dancing in the clubs in Toronto in the seventies and eighties. Here's a few favourites
The Spoons. Romantic Traffic
(FM bass player)
RiughTrade
High School Confidential
And for Nic....
David Wilcox Do the Bearcat !
Also from 83, “Send me an Angel” by Real Life was also in movie soundtracks. Cool song
Bass king is mark king of level 42,amazing in the 80s,lessons in love, something about you to name a few...
the first time I watched the video I was like, they are some spiffy-looking dudes, lucky bastards, LOL, sorry for the bad word...
True and Gold (which you have said you will review) are probably SBs biggest hits. Gold has also been used in countless films and adverts. But Through the Barricades is a beautiful song, not as popular, but should not be missed. I have seen others mention it already in the comments.
Such a classic
Awww. This song brings back so many memories! Fun to watch you react to it!
Not that either band influenced each other but I get some Tears for Fears vibes from this. And being a 13 year old in 83 , we really had some great artists and music. !
Watch the official video. They were making a statement of style.
MATT! I used to like this group more than Human League or ABC - they were really smooth polished songs good hits GOLD and TRUE
Hola!
Voice sound like Tear's for Fear's
Both band's were part of the 2nd British invasion
Sixteen Candles, and later The Wedding Singer. Also, an episode of Modern Family, kinda sorta.
Very smoooth
A song sampled by many rappers in the US !
If you want to try an 80s UK tune that has very few reactions, try "Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag" by the band Pigbag (it's an instrumental).
Any reaction is guaranteed for her to say “wow that base” with the air guitar 💀
Bass 😎
Martin Kemp was playing Bass
His brother wrote the song , He was playing Piano
Spandau is one of the boroughs of Berlin.
stand or fall the fixx is a good song to react to
A great tune that you both should listen to is "I can feel him in the Morning" by Grand Funk Railroad. You would never guess it was them. Their early days. Great tune
It's in the movie THE WEDDING SINGER 😂😂😂😂
Through the Barricades was their banger
A group similar to this one is called ABC but they were fans of Smokey Robinson. But similar in style to this group.
Spandau Ballet has an association with Wham. See below. Both bands and Tears for Fears 😨 are British 🇬🇧.
Released in 1983. In the movie 🎥 16 Candles 🕯 starring Molly Ringwald in 1984.

Muy buena versión!
Classic😎
React to SIMPLE MINDS “ Don’t you forget about me “, this is 1 of my favorite song for the 80’s it was on the movie BREAKFAST CLUB
The single was definitely shorter.
I always just figured this was Tears for Fears since I wasn't into pop back then.
Definitely great tune.
👍🏻👍🏻💯❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥
