  • Harvard Prof. Michael J. Sandel stars the plenary "The tyranny of merit" at the IESE Global Alumni Reunion 2021 on November 11th, 2021. Meritocracy might have pernicious consequences which we should be aware of. What can leaders do to build meritocratic society and without eroding the common good?

Yes. This is my view as well on whatever job we are doing, we are on the same level.
Another fact is that, the higher one position in the company, the less work one do and might no need any talent at all to be there. Why ? Connection, nepotism and marrytocracy.

The reasons you cite are exactly the opposites of meritocracy, and they are bad. So you may agree that meritocracy is better.

I think an argument about luck of Messi being born in the age of soccer is false. Millions of others are born to the same age and have ssme opportunity to excel in this sport. I agree that there are disadvantaged kids who get less opportunities just because they were born in poor or less educated family. The function of the state is to create just education system that is free for all and gives equal opportunities to all students. Having graduated the high school new adults should join the race to the top with the most innovative and talented rewarded accordingly for their work.

Its interesting to think of all things as biases.. talent, merit, effort, genetics..
ignoring all other things.. instead of adapting consideration..
Here's the thing though you can not rely on the individual alone to have consideration.
A Republic will not work.. But Socialism brings tyranny of the masses, biases, ignorance's of the individual.
A cap perhaps on capitalism, that feeds back into the lowest incomes..

    • @noobsaibot5285

We have regulated free-market capitalism. Perhaps some more regulations on monopolies, especially those being created by the government. CBDCs, ESGs, and RFIDs are the future the socialists want for us. Tyranny is coming.

@@95greenbug anytime government places an artificial
“Cap” on business, bad outcomes result.
Also notice- it’s always democrats that want to impose caps. Because democrats always want to be seen as compassionate- while the results of their compassion is most often worse than what they were trying to fix.
Look up the results of rent caps. They are a total failure. There are several cities and states talking about imposing rent caps now - and they are all by democrat governments.
Imagine if there were caps on incomes? This happens in union scales. There is no incentive past the cap to increase productivity.

What about the tyranny of virtue, the tyranny of conscience, the tyranny of honesty, etc? Placing the word tyranny before a complex system does not make it tyrannical. Following the great Thomas Sowell, one can always ask, "What is the alternative." Admittedly, meritocracy is not a perfect system. But it seems that all other alternatives are worse.
