    Unlike some of the people here, I think this lecture was good! The best thing about Sandel's lecture is that it doesn't lead to the "answer" he has in mind but that it keeps people thinking on both sides of the argument! Brilliant!

    This is astonishing. I've always seen things in a complete economic, materialistic point of view, for it seems as though the rational thing to do; but there's apparently a flaw in standard economic reasoning, when it comes to morality. The research cases about nuclear waste and donation by kids really strike me. Seems I've been underestimating people's attitudes and social practices when it comes to values and norms and non-material demands.

    So marvellous! As usual, truly speaking. Apparently, there are certain things that cannot be replaced by anywho and anything. Something that is a virtue for us can't be for sale. Something that we truly must protect and try to discourage any exposure on it. Our behavioral underlying principles in some cases contradict the common sense for the sake of our existence, I guess. Reasoning of math, economyics, physics isn't able to explain every single deviation of us from the common sense. We get to know more, we get to see more, but there is something that perhaps will be a mystery for a long time.

    This is a better lecture not only discussed among students, but more levels of people are participating in, they've got their unique life experience respectively, they can tell more with that.
    Money is so strong, and powerful tool for people on earth to control and manage others. That is really the success of market economy. Money itself is kind of power, only government, the central bank has the power to release money, that is money.

    While I do agree that turning causes into financial transactions may corrupt the intrinsic values in these causes, let's take, for instance, the example of the Swiss community turning down the "bribe"-- I think the discussion missed to raise the issue that Switzerland has a relatively good economic standing and their constituents are relatively leading better lives than the rest of the world. Because of this, it is easier for them to act out of their civic responsibilities because they feel secure enough to survive despite the risks. But what about those living on the poorer side of the globe? These financial transactions in exchange for the risk they will take then become a MUST instead of a "learning opportunity". Those who have barely enough to survive reasonably set aside cultivating life values because they are busy trying to survive and afford daily essentials.

    So my grandfather was way ahead of his time and market. In the mid 1980s, at the end of every term (aka semester), he paid ONE shilling for whoever was 1st position in class, 50 cents for 2nd place, and 25 cents for 3rd place. And we (the scholars) were beside ourselves whenever we earned our keep.

    i find it fascinating that many attendees believed that we should not use a cash incentive to cultivate the love of learning in children (a public good), but do not consider the many ways that we already use cash incentives to cultivate public goods, like affordable housing (Low Income Housing Tax Credit), the purchase of real estate (mortgage interest deduction), or business development in low-income areas (New Markets Tax Credits . . .

    From my visits to America I can confirm that there are separate societies within this country and people live different lives. There are benefits and there are drawbacks. Major benefit I see is elimination of envy on the poor side, and elimination of mess (in all possible meanings) on the rich side. The major drawback I see is that the poor understand the reason why some people are rich, because they don't know them. This might turn back on the rich.

    Thank you very much for the enlightening speech by Prof. Sandel. To my humble knowledge, Islamic economy could answer most, if not all, issues raised by Prof Sandel. I wish Prof Sandel would like to delve more on Islamic Economics, he would have got most, if not all, of the issues he raised on this talk. Nevertheless, my praise to Prof Sandel for the good talk.

    Do we really want to augment and increase the interest in reading or increase the craving for money by offering such a proposal to our kids? It may be varying as per case , some may develop the interest in reading and some may understand what money can buy and for the sake of buying the stuff they may read more and more books but without enjoying it. This will also west their time which could have been used in some other area where this time could have been used more sensibly.

    Growing up, my mom offered all of us one penny per page that we read. My siblings loved to read and cashed in. I hated to read, but when I was forced to for school, I always appreciated a dollar here and there. I'm in my thirties now and I still hate reading lol.

    I guess, using money / small gift / even 'tokens' for jump start is okay for kids... as long as we understood that this is NOT the best ... and the primary objective is to promote the pursuit knowledge / innate good.

    If there is no intrinsic motivation, the money will help but will not create intrinsic motivation, money is an extrinsic motivator. If you are intrinsically motivated and you get money (extrinsic motivator) it replaces intrinsic with extrinsic and that is not bad if you can always keep giving money, but when you stop giving money to the kids that used to like reading they will stop. #Source = Psychology studies

    He didn’t go far enough! I would have agreed if the offer had been payment in exchange for a book report. That would have been more in line with actual work. Reading and the love of searching I agree shouldn’t be connected to a market value. That is intrinsic.

    Are these children retaining the information they reading in '15' books, or are they're minds focused on the '$20' they'll receive once they've finished the last page. The people in favour need to find concrete evidence that their children's comprehension skills have improved once financial incentives were introduced to them. Materialism for intelligence? I feel the money, in the long run, will not create a mind thriving to learn but more so to earn. The idea is plausible but not sustainable.

    Thank you very much for your kind reply. First of all, it is not "Profit Sharing", but Profit and Loss Sharing. So, profit and loss should be shared. Your second question is technical so I could not answer it deeply. However, suffice to say that the decision of taking Islamic system should start from a sound political process. Islamic banking Industry in Indonesia clearly shows this. No political agreement, no law, and hence no industry legalization. Hence, democracy should take place.

    You cannot incentivise everyone for everything with money, it would be too expensive. People need to be socialised through other incentives, moral values, religion, etc, which is what happens for most things, most of the time and why society functions at all, however imperfectly.

    Profit sharing is a sound idea, provided that the workplace is also democratized. If workers own part of the company, should they not also have decision making power when they desire it? I believe every party that is affected by a company policy has the right to be represented when the company's policies are codified.

    The example discussed for so long, of cash incentives for academic work by children, is not an example of using a market. He is just talking about rewards in a context with no market. That seems to me to fundamentally undermine the title of this talk and leaves us with no new evidence of what he calls a 'market society'.

    what Prof Sandel describes are not true markets, but the ones in a social democrat or socialist capitalist civilization we have today. The definition of liberalism is the respect for the life project of everyone based on 3 principles: right to life, property and fredom protected by the non-agression principle, prices as the institution of information and markets as the voluntary interchange between people with contract rules. If you sell your child you are failing to the property right. Your child is not your property but your responsability

    The kids aged, between, 6-12 , brains is empty , and if they should reading a books, we have to find out what types of books they are reading, and what’s the content of those books, is there any control, on the books which they are reading, what’s the subject’s, are those books has been written by scientific evidence which is suitable for the kids ? What ever is the content, just builds the children’s brains, and filled by the materials which they are doing for the money , and when they do it for money, when they gets older, they get sick of to seeing any other books, and their interest changes to negative effects, and that’s will happens to them, when they needed to learned more , and they even loosing their interests of their lessons, and they’re going for , something different, other than books, because, they are getting closer to the tin age, period of their life, which is very important, for every child’s, and here is the time’s, which your children’s life gets shape .

    Hello David. Thank you very much for your question. In Essence, Islamic Economics are economics without interest rate. Certainly, this does not capture the whole picture of Islamic Economics. We argue the soundness of Islamic Economics because we argue that this is an economy with Islamic Values. Unlike current conventional economics that uses Interest rate, Islamic Economics is more towards profit and loss sharing. Islamic Economics is the economics of Jews, Christian, and Muslim.

    The Great American fallacy.
    Reading for money.
    High school diploma for money.
    College degree for money.
    Those that can’t teach.
    Those that teach for money,
    would not do it for minimum wage.
    Those that don’t have a need would
    not work for minimum wage.
    Those that have no chioce and have
    no education do work for minimum wage.
    But many with little or no education can become
    rich in America. American is not the land of opportunity. It is the land of the opportunist.
    A child that reads for money is an opportunist.
    The American dream is to become an opportunist.
    Over coming the lack of knowing leads to a income
    of at leveis of living. Every person can choose or settle at whatever level they are willing to live.
    Every individual should strive to be happy no

    Holy innocents students going for funds they raised.
    loves to read or raised funds.
    Loves to get pay like playing computer games, reading books, washing dishes, eating meals.
    Rewards for reading, playing computers games. Addiction to the cash, Value of books, no money reading book. Improve academic or materialise activities. Corrupted on long run.
    Conditioning the students to read. Etc etc.

    Why does every person have the belief that paying a kid for a book should be done every time? "Do this and MAYBE you will get a reward." Random Variable Reward. Then you base it on merit of the book and difficulty.
    To be honest it all boils down to how much attention and time you are giving your child.

    Reading to last page is not reading a book necessarily. This logic of "whatever works" on education, that generates "progress"; all the terms and "solutions" are wrong already, we need to understand education not as tool to control, shape or solve problems; it's not a market or factory. We need to understand education as a process different than others; one that gives freedom for the kids (treat them as kids, not future adults), that helps them to make choices and explore their potentials.

    I don't like the part in this video in which people spent long time to discuss whether parents or school should use money as a reward to encourage children do reading and some parents are actually do this for their children. It's a wrong way to stimulate children's reading interest and lead children to a wrong direction in their early childhood.

    The science makes us expand what kind of we can sell. For many past eras, no matter how much had, even if they were kings of nations, they couldn't sell any biological factors like pregnancy, sperm, egg, youth because it wasn't invented by the science. Even Lincoln couldn't. :) Yes, they had commercial sex, physical labors either but it was different apparently from surrogate mother and the others like organs.
    So this question should expand how we deal with the science in the economical markets. Actually the science has touched morality in human's society and as we know, it shouldn't get involved in selling and dealing. This is a matter that I think.

    kids just wouldn't put in any effort if they cannot "game they system" and only those who are again truly interested in reading will benefit as Xavier selfishly explained.
    Not all kids enjoy reading what some say they should enjoy reading.
    If the kid does not enjoy reading he still won't read.

    the example is a fallacy because the notion of moral, ethical behavior is not well developed until adolescence at least. So the incentive for children is different than those of adults. Certain cultures have the wrong values and the incentives could trigger the good values instead. The hypothesis prof SAndel shows is flawed

    It's such a shame that Micheal Sandel has such great talks, but doesn't recognise that it should be done voluntarily. Justice is not enforced, it's accepted and preferred.

    Pay money to children who do not have any or too much interest in reading is really the worst way to educate them, because the problem here is the children have no interest in reading, they have no interest in learning, they've got everything, it is not necessary for them to read or to learn through reading. TV and games are much more attractive to them because it is funny.
    During this process, money plays a role of transforming problem to another one, while not solving it.
