- Quick little DIY tutorial on how to troubleshoot your miles per hour gauge not working due to a malfunctioning speed sensor. Save yourself some money, buy your part on eBay for $25-$30 Bucks used or brand new and replace it yourself. Time frame for this repair it's typically 15 minutes. The dealership will charge you $160 for an hour's worth of labor cost plus parts which in this case the speed sensor from the dealership will normally run you anywhere from $70 to $150.

Thanks for the video man. Within 10 minutes of me being home from a ride I already know what the issue is and how to fix it.
Thanks for stopping in and commenting Christopher. This is an easy enough fix. Glad I was able to help you out. Ride safe
This was very helpful man, thank you so much! Bought a 2018 gsxr yesterday and riding home yesterday my mph working which i figured it was the speed sensor but had no idea where the location was..
the new sensor worked like a charm. thanks man
Thanks James, a nice simple tutorial.
Saved me a heap of time on diagnostics and possible speeding fines,
Cheers R.G.
.
Glad i could help you out Robert, thanks for commenting. Be sure to subscribe, I have almost 100 videos of mostly every maintenance and repair broken down for you in your time of need aside from cracking the engine open.
thank you so much! first thing I did to my bike n it was EASY
Awesome bro, glad I could help out...
85k Nice, long live that GSXR. Great vid
Regular maintenance and upkeep and these bike can last a lifetime. Im still amazed that you see 89s out there still kicking around, infact i have a few friends with 89s with less milage then my 05Goes to show you how much riding i do during the week. Not to long ago I took the bike bike to the owner i purchased it from and let him take it for a ride. when he got back he was amazed at how well it still ran and looked. His exact words were it still performed the say way when he first bought it from the dealership. I purchased it from him at 40k and added another 45k. So ive gotten just as much use out of it as he did.
Out of all my bikes the fz6 has 53k and runs better than most with half its millage, i use it every day to go work and it gets a lot of love, you wouldn't find a spec of rust on that baby :)
Thank you for the info, needed that. Have the same exact same issue. Will do as advised...
I've done 85% of what u said my bike is still apart I'll go Check the rest and give u an update. the cluster and connection points are good me and a friend pulled my cluster swapped with his and it worked just fine on his bike I give a few more things a try and hit u back up if I have any luck. thanks bro
85,000!!! Fuck yes! I have 38,000 on mine, and trying to take care of it. Great vid my dude!
You still have a young pup with lots of life left in her. Shit I bought mine with 40k on the clock and she ran till I threw 2nd gear.. at that point I had 98k miles on the clock. The motor is still good and I have it in the garage for a rainy day rebuild (coming soon) Take care of it and it will last you a lifetime.. Me and Ms. Lucie Lu are gonna ride till the wheels fall off.. lol
james moreno fuck yeah man. Mine has been very reliable si far. It’s good to see how long they are capable of lasting.
You just earned a new sub.
thanks bro, been tryna figure this out forever
john stokes awesome brother, glad i could help u out. Stay tuned, i have few more helpful videos coming real soon i including custom accent lighting.
my speedometer hasnt worked in forever lol i thought it was the harness itself. i just been lazy. i been on ebay looking for sensors all morning
Great video Brother, thanks man this video helped me alot🤙
Thank you brother
bro thank you that was really helpful
Great video
Thank you, bro, helped me alot.
Thanks for the video man. I have a gsxr 750 2015 model. It started with a FI alert quickshifter stopped working upwards and speedometer stopped working completely. Turned the bike off and started it up again day after. Alert had then cleared speedometer started working but it shows lower speed than reality. All this started after I washed my bike the other day. Do you have any tips where to start? I’m guessing maybe speed sensor has water ingress but need to inspect.
thanks. assuming this is the issue
Thanks brotha !!!
Had to replace my clutch cable actuator arm and some small magnets fell from somewhere do you know if that's for the speed sensor? Asking because it's right in from of the sprocket. I don't know where the magnets should go
What up brother, well the magnet shouldn't be exposed, it should be encapsulated in black plastic.. if yours is then it's broken. It should resemble what you see at 4:34 in the video.
@@TheChemistDIY awesome thanks for the info. Yeah the guy I bought it from tweaked a lot of stuff I need to repair. Wasn't sure if it was for that or for the clutch cable arm. Thanks again!
Yeah my speed jumps all around. Next buy
Easy fix and part is cheap enough.. literally 8 - 10 minutes to swap out.
Hi Chemist need a huge favor from you man can you send me a snap shot of your cluster wiring going in at the back of the cluster I just need to see the wiring colors top and bottom side
I'll see what I can do bro. Supper busy with school right now and don't have time to get into Lucy at the moment.. shoot me your email or send me one..
Right above that connector on my 600 there is a green connector that isn't plugged into anything and is jumped do you know anything about that I do know this bike has 05 gsxr 1000 headers
What is the shape of the connection and how many pins?
Why not show removing and replacing
Cool but u should also check that it reads correctly I changed my sensor and it reads correct when going 1-5 mph but when riding it says I’m going over 100 when I’m going 30 only reads correct when I’m stopped says 0
Wow, that's a first that I've heard of. That's why it's important to have videos like this.. so other can hear of problems encountered. So was the issue the speed sensor or your pickup?
@@TheChemistDIY yea i have a similar problem... stopped working altogether now - will change the sensor thanks!
that's the thing my headlight and everything works just fine I'll get a new harness I just stripped the whole bike down checked everything and still nothing
I have an 06 gsxr 600 if the speed sensor would that also cause the mileage to stop working also because i have both the mph not working and the mileage thanks!
Correct...
I changed my Speed sensor and it's still 0mph any ideas bro? 2004 Gixxer 600
A couple brother,. Just because you replaced the speed sensor with a new one doesn't mean the new one was any good to begin with, did you test it? I've bought a few parts from eBay that didn't work out of the box when I installed them, and that's because the new part was bad.
The speed sensor only works because it picks up the rotation of the "pickup", the starting look nut that hold the sprocket on. What's the condition of your pickup and does it have the proper distance from your speed sensor?
Have you tested your harness connector and make sure it's got a good signal from the harness connector to the gauge cluster? There have been many times when my connectors have been dirty and foul and I needed to spray them with some type of cleaner agent to make the connection work. There have also been times where the pin connection on the back of the connector has pushed out and just needed to be pushed back in making the proper connection.
These are all very simple things that are often overlooked, reinspect everything I've stated above and get back to me. It's very rare it's a broken wire leading up the harness but can happen..
@@TheChemistDIY Thank you so much after reading. Upon further inspection . My rotor that spins , which the speed sensor picks up. actually was not even there so I just got a new .genuine Suzuki speed rotor
Hey brother, glad I could help u out and solve your issue. I'm not going to ask how the pick up sprocket disappeared..lol, it happens.. just make sure you add lock tight to the bolt that holds it in place so you don't lose the new one . Hope you subscribe and stick around..
@@TheChemistDIY awesome thanks man! Very weird last owners . I have no idea . the Bolt was still in place so I believe he took it out on purpose so it stopped counting milage LOL
Wow, that's shady and also very illegal.. if you wanted you could make a legal claim against him claiming tampering with milage to increase resale value. Who knows how many miles you have on that engine now.. this will definitely affect maintenance intervals such as rings and valve adjustments just to name the a few of the major components.
Would this be the same for the opposite? Got a cbr that the speedometer is workings but not the rpm. When you start the bike it rolls the rpms hand before starting it but when it's on it doesn't move.
Idle Rpm has nothing to do with the speed sensor and vs. vers. If the idle rpm is not working then you may want to check your harness or the connection at the back of the gauge cluster to see if it's fully seated. If you can find any issues with the wiring then the cluster may be bad.
Ey there I got the same problem in my Suzuki gsxr 600 2009 but I changed it and still the speedometer dont work at all. I was thinking maybe the other owner disconnect the system. He used to race on that bike. Do u know how to fix this problem?
Could be a couple of things really. I had one viewer replace the sensor and it not work. Turned out the replacement he bought was bad also. After replacing the replacement it finally worked. Secondly, there is a magnet pickup on the sprocket, if your speedo is not working check to see if this is missing or off alignment, it needs to be a certain distance from sensor in order to read as the sprocket spins. Thirdly, i would trace the wiring up to the cluster and look for anything fraid or cut.
Does this work for a 05 600?
Anyone know the pin lay out for a 05 gsxr 600?
What brand is the brand new speed sensor? I have swapped mine with a used part and my speed reading is still inaccurate (reading too high of a speed). I'm wondering if it is the sprocket wheel that is bad???
What up brother, I don't recall the brand, I just grabbed one off eBay. Are you the first owner of the bike and know all the mods.. I ask this because your sprockets may have been swapped out and geared down.. usually to 16 tooth front.. I believe OEM sprocket sizes are 17 tooth front/42 Rear.. you can looked that up to confirm.. if they are different gearing then you will need a Speedo Healer to correct.. you can see my video on that here.
ruclips.net/video/b-pnczNn2UI/видео.html
@@TheChemistDIY All I could find on eBay were OEM ones (new and used), couldn't find an aftermarket new one, wish I could.
Purchased bike from auction...Don't know what any of the previous mods were.
I just snagged a SpeedoDRD for $68 amzn.to/31E9AA9
Speedohealer is twice as much and seems just as complicated to set-up. amzn.to/3gjKBpG
@@jtcintl4373 you got a good deal on your speedoDrD.. think I paid like $75 for mine.. installation is very easy.. check out my video on that.. speedoDrD also has a very good setup video as well..
yeah if your getting a reading on the cluster then the issue is not anything not working correctly with the pickup or sensor.. it's going to be that you have different gearing installed.. you can confirm this by just removing the sprocket cover and counting the teeth.. on my bike I'm geared up.. 18 teeth and that's because I do a lot of committing or freeway riding and want better gas milage, high end speed, and less shifting. You can check out my setup, I have a install video that explains why chose my JT chain and sprocket kit...
Keep me posted..
When I want play (torque) I'll drop down to a 16 front sprocket.. great torque but sucks on the freeway hearing the bike wine high and toping out fast, not to mention all the extra shifting in traffic..
Wish u showed how u actually changed it. Information was solid but u didn't show nothing on how to actually change it🤦🏻♂️
Sorry about that.. really simple tho.. two Allen bolts and just pull out.. install in reverse order..
Thank you did that exactly n worked 💪🏾
just few weeks ago i bought a used 2011 GSXR750 with 23k km on it. Everything is in perfect condition but one thing i have noticed that the speedometer shows 10-15 Km/h extra and i have been told to check the tyre pressure and size which seems to be ok. Anyone has similar issue or knows about this fault. thanks
Sounds to me that the previous owner has changed out the sprockets.. I believe you ur front sprocket is a 17 tooth while the back should be a 42-43 took.. do your research on the OEM size sprockets and take a look.. if they have been swapped out you will need a Speedo healer.. I have a video on that as well..
Hey man once u replaced the speed sensor and actually started riding was the mph correct? I have similar issue mine while riding jumps 5 mph and goes back down ..its not an accurate mph
ya, once installed everything will work as normal right off the batt. Ive never had the issue of it working intermittently or been off in speed tho. you might want to pull off the cover (like 5-6 bolts) and check the metal rotating sprocket and see if its not lose or dirty (maybe clean with brake cleaner). theres a center bolt in that keeps the sprocket in place, take ur allen and see if its loose. this sprocket should not have any play. If all is fine and you have replaced the speed sensor as well then check your wires with a multimeter all the way up to the cluster and see if its not a broken or frayed wire that causing the issue.

+james moreno thanks man.. will check
Should of shown taking it off an outing it on for the ppl of need a visual like me lol
have you have the issue where the speedo and tach went out with no display but the guage works?
Sorry Graig, no I haven't. But this doesn't seem like to hard of an issue to troubleshoot. It's going to be one of two things The cluster itself is bad (or is on its last leg), or you have a broken signal wire. I would first clean off all the connection points at both ends of the plugs (male and Female sockets) and at the back of the cluster with some electrical contact cleaner (make sure to check all contacts for corrosion). If that didn't work then I would perform a connectivity test with a digital multi-meter. Unplug the connector at the back of speedo, and ECM, pop in some led wires for testing and check to see if you have a broken wire from one end to the other. This would be easier if you had the wiring diagram so you know which is the signal wires (google for free PDF). If that didn't work I would go into the cluster (6 screws on back side) to check for issues with the PCB board (cracked board, burnt or broken solder welds)
I recently had an to open mine because the glass on the speed reading section (square section) had a hair line crack that kept growing. So I removed the glass and replaced it with some Plexiglas I had laying around from previous projects. At any rate: if you do open her up, test the contact points at the plug to the board and see if the signal is traveling through the connector, if this is all good then you know its nothing to do with the bike and you've boiled it down to a faulty speedo meter (time for a replacement/ebay!). hope that helped your issue.
I believe this is your issue, see this link ruclips.net/video/IbTM9-kg6-Y/видео.html. If you see his comments you can see that he had to replace the whole main harness to solve the issue.
Hi, is it normal that the top right red light on the speedometer be always on?
i believe its on when the ignition key is switch to the accessories spot and once the bike starts it cuts off.
Hahahah right I mean when the bike is on, I figure is cuz have any error code. Thanks.
Isidro Hdz Its been some time since I've had an F1 code thrown but ya I belive when a code is thrown, the red light comes on as well to grab your attention.
so how do u test it?
The simplest method was to spin the wheel and see if the gauge cluster picked up the reading, displaying a 1 or 2 MPH. If it didn't then the next thing to check would be the tone wheel located at the smaller sprocket ( behind the casing where you removed the speed sensor from). If your bike has it, there is a nut that needs tightening (lose sprocket) and this should restore functionality if the sensor is good. Testing the speed sensor itself with a multi-meter doesn't really do a good job of diagnosing an issue with the senor since its basically just a magnetic pickup. Normally what happens is the magnet gets to weak for the cluster to read, but still works and when you slide a metal object over it while connected to the meter you will still get a reading leading you to believe its still good, so rather then show this in the video I chose to leave it out because I didn't want to mislead viewers as a good testing method.
Hope that answers your question
My neutral light does not work, any ideas?
Crack open the speedo and see if the bulb is burned out or not making good contact. Its Really simple to remove and open.
@@TheChemistDIY Thanks bro, will do
i have the same problem with my 2017 yamaha r3 the odometer stuck at 10189 mile and the speedo stuck at 0 mph not working can any one help :3
Letran sure.. there usually located near the sprocket side of the bike. Get the part from ebay.. and use this link to locate and remove your.. should be in the same vicinity next to the shifter. Let me know how this info works for you if you fix.

What’s the name of the Cable
Sorry brother. Not sure what cable you talking about, give me a time stamp so I can give you an answer.. in the video I'm showing the wiring harness side speed sensor connection.. and the speed actual speed sensor.. there is no other technical term for them.
ok update I just brought a new harness installed it got the gauge back up now the bike won't start i turn it on nothing fires up at all
check your fuses, under the seat
+james moreno yo done that 3x lol
so when you turn the key, do you have power period doesn't answer my question light up comma do any lights come on?
+james moreno everything works all the lights
+craig saunders 1st things first, did we eliminate the problem with the speedo cluster , is it displaying zero digital number?.
Cheers mate, heiniken😜.Thanks taking efford for the video,my troubleshoot was the connector cluster due corrosion, exactly this.ruclips.net/video/6njWIUUeXb0/видео.html also a common problem of gsxr.
It ducks you didn't show us how to remove it and put it in 💀
Sorry brother, earlier days of making video's. Pretty str8 forward though. Disconnect plug, remove screw and remove and replace. No magic behind it.
Speedo meter
Maybe you should actually show how to replace it instead of just talking about it....
Just feed it through bro not rocket science
