    I feel that this channel has become more educative than Discovery Channel and History Channel put together, all they show is aliens, pawn shops, and a bunch of mechanics fixing cars.

    Humans are pretty amazing at not dying as well. We can drink alcohol without getting sick the way other animals do, we can breathe in gasses that would be lethal to most birds, given enough time, at a long enough distance, we will eventually outrun a horse, out of pure endurance, and for all of our weaknesses, we create our own defenses, like medicine, armor, weapons, tools and complex machines. A mongoose may survive a cobra bite due to its biology, but a human can survive it just out of its sheer brilliance.

    • @BurdFan
      @BurdFan 9 лет назад +84

      skalmaa most animals can't consume alcohol. It's a club for humans, apes, some monkeys and the elephant, basically. And we still have the ability to run for longer periods than other animals. And don't discard the intelligence as if we can't count that. We couldn't fly, so we built machines that let us. We couldn't breath under water, so we built tools that made it possible. We've built vehicles that let us travel faster than any other animal, on land, on sea and in the sky. We can tunnel through the earth like moles, but when the mole hits stone, it has to stop. We don't. Dolphins may be smart, but they are nowhere close to the human intellect.

      NaiOni Not to mention we have far better eye sight. Most mammals can only see in black and white. We have opposable thumbs, highly maneuverable limbs for grasping etc.

      Eratic Music Bullshit. Birds can see in ultraviolet and we can't.Hawks and eagles have far better eyesight than us and their vision doesn't get blurred.Most animals see colour that's why some creatures are brightly coloured to warn predators they are poisonous as most animals CAN see colour.

    • @BurdFan
      @BurdFan 9 лет назад +12

      BiologistVon Riemann Not all birds can see ultra violet. Parrots can, some birds of prey do as well, but not all birds of prey. Many of the less colorful parrots have feathers that reflect ultra violet light as a substitute, that won't break their camouflage

    • @biologistvonriemann3580
      @biologistvonriemann3580 9 лет назад +13

      But the claim that humans have superior eyesight in general is fallacy, that's the claim I'm getting at.

    • @DeadlyTiger
      @DeadlyTiger 9 лет назад +5

      Mormee Mo_ It depends on the breed of dog. Some breeds can eat a whole chocolate cake and be fine, while others will go into shock from one square of a chocolate bar. Definitely something every dog owner should look up and be aware of. Since (and I'm sorry) the general public is stupid, it is easier to just tell everyone not to feed chocolate to their dogs. Also it can get tricky when you have mixed breeds to know what kind of reaction they will have. However I strongly recommend not giving human food to dogs in general. Its sort of the equivalent of eating eating fast food all the time, or trying to live off of bags of chips. While human food might not be toxic and make them instantly sick, their digestive systems are not built for it, and it will shorten their life spans and cause many health problems over the years.

    I have an idea! What if the crumple zones in cars were designed somewhat like woodpecker skulls? Buckled-in drivers in car crashes can sometime experience up to 30 G's. Well-made crumple zones can reduce that number in half, decreasing the risk of fatalities. If woodpecker skulls can withstand 1200 G's, maybe a crumple zone designed in a similar manner could be a breakthrough in car safety.

    Some people say that humans would be completely destroyed by animals if the playing field were level... Well, it is! Humans' intelligence is our main survival factor, so our ability to create and use guns and such is our power. Having us fight without that is like having snakes fight without fangs, venom, or constriction. Then, they're just a legless lizard, as humans would just be weak apes without our intelligence.

      i always love stories like that. I'm actually in a long term medical study because I took a "lethal" dosage of a couple medications during an experimental cancer treatment and survived. My dad survived getting kicked in the back a large horse despite the doctor saying that he should have died or at least spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair. I have an uncle who had a large cedar tree (i think 120-150ft) fall, roll down the mountain side, and literally flatten him like a Wille Coyote cartoon. On the other hand i had 1 grandpa die from taking some aspirin and another who died of a cold. Humans are weird.

    I have a question, and I think it would be nice to see a SciShow video about this topic...
    Aside from the obvious answers to this question, I'd like to know why humans by and large do, and or consume, things which harm us to the point of death. For example, smoking cigarettes, or eating fast food, and things like that. You don't see much of this in the rest of the animal kingdom. Imagine a monkey smoking cigarettes without being given them by a human.

    • @Faisal-he4tx
      @Faisal-he4tx 8 лет назад +3

      +mskillo81 Aside from the fact that animals base all their actions on natural instinct and that smoking cigarettes or any recreational activity for that material is not essential to their survival, humans can pick and choose what they want, I smoke cigs, I know they're bad, I know they harm, but to me its worth it, and i have the ability to reach that conclusion, but that's just my mentality. so who knows maybe smoking monkeys did exist, but they just lung cancered them selves and diedededed.

      Pretty much this though. The brain doesn't really care where the chems come from, so long as it gets them. We could live artificially hooked up to machines our entire lives and have an absolute blast. The only reason we have any drive to do anything now of days is because all of our needs can't be met so easily, as we often aren't even aware of what we are lacking.

    could you genetically engineer someone to make their own antifreeze, so they could live in really cold places without coats or whatever?

    • @Aaaa-gs7ww
      @Aaaa-gs7ww 10 лет назад +8

      Scientifically, it's possible. In practice, however, it's really complex. First, you`re going to need to know what elements antifreeze is made of. You also need to know how the body will react to cold, how much antifreeze needs to be produced, how the body will use the antifreeze, how cold it is, and many other variables. But, given enough time for numerous studies and basic trial and error testing, you could genetically make a human that could produce one. (Though it would probably be easier to steal genes from trees, specifically maple trees. Syrup is antifreeze.)

    Is it normal for humans to lose consciousness at just under 5 gs? Or rather, is that something you can "train" yourself out of, for lack of a better term? Formula 1 drivers regularly endure 5gs braking deceleration on several circuits, and I think that Suzuka's 130-R corner in Japan has had lateral loads of like, 6gs.

    • @alexphillips4325
      @alexphillips4325 10 лет назад +4

      It depends how long it lasts, the Intimidator coaster has a load of 5.5 and it causes a grayout due to lack of blood but your brain does not shut down because it is such a short time. Fighter pilots can experience up to 10 gs in a supersonic turn.

    • @ghostbirdofprey
      @ghostbirdofprey 10 лет назад +5

      The 5 Gs mentioned is continuous. it takes a couple seconds for you to fully black out since that's due to blood being pulled out of your brain. Some are more tolerant than others and there are things that can be done to combat it.
      Instantaneous acceleration needed to knock you out is higher.

    • @kLlEr1001
      @kLlEr1001 10 лет назад +3

      its definitely possible to train yourself so you can withstand more g's.
      For example some jet pilots are often put through 10g's and even more, but they've been trained and it will take at least 2 years to be able to withstand 10 g's.

    • @brendenpischke6060
      @brendenpischke6060 9 лет назад +1

      Not many can withstand 10 g's. My dad used to work for the Royal Canadian Air Force fixing jets. We apparently have an air base in Germany and my dad was best in his class during training so he was one of a select few who got to go there. While he was there, there was a group of pilots in the local bar where only those who had made it to 10 g's in their plane could hang out with them. You're pretty special if you can make it to 10 g's.

    So imagine... if a human had wood-pecker DNA or design, he would essentially be knock-out-proof. This would be like the most ultimate boxer. He could never be knocked out, no matter what.

    • @HawkRed63

      i am currently scishow surfing and convienently remember you (mainly because i watch the show your picture is of) but while i do respect your religious beliefs (dont let the science trolls get you its your mind do whatever the fuck you want with it) but that is the beauty of evolution you can see the distinct changes in some( idk about all havent memorized the fossil record) animals where they did not have these traits and now do in order to be able to do the things they do...evolution is a fact the word theory might not mean what you think it mean...but you could say god made evolution happen in which case theres no argument for or against that...plus any atheist or agnostic with some self respect ( im technically one of those 2) will tell you that there will be and can never be proof of a god....but the opposite is also true, there will never be any evidence to prove he doesnt exist so carry on believing as long as what you believe doesnt harm others

      TheTraveler Actually natural selection in combination with punctuated equilibrium because natural selection itself is far too slow to create new species. (Need a population of 100 million and a life cycle of 3 months) to overcome extinction rates and unfavorable mutations ( 1 favorable mutations occurs about every 10,000 mutations )

    Well Hank the thing is that humans have become soft and weak from living in civilization too long. Now we whine and complain about the tiniest problems. Our ancestors would be disappointed in us for what we have become.

    • @neverhero3215
      @neverhero3215 10 лет назад +4

      The fact that you're using the internet to express that opinion hurts me deeply. We have a network for exchanging information nearly instantly around the world, we've learned how to fly, we've been to space, and we've vastly extended our lifespans. Do you really think our ancestors would be disappointed in us?

    • @JSF800
      @JSF800 10 лет назад +2

      Weak physically? Maybe. Weak? Never. Sam Oberwetter makes an excellent point, and to be honest if our ancestors saw us they'd probably be incredibly jealous. I mean, would you rather buy your food from Sainsbury's, or have to hunt it down with a crudely built spear. Call me weak if you want to, but I'm sticking with my microwavable ready meals, thank you very much ;)

    • @dreadcthulhu5
      @dreadcthulhu5 10 лет назад

      ***** Yes I would rather grow food than eat reheated chemicals in a microwave and am digging a plot in my backyard to do so. It's much more nutritious. It will also save on my food bills I hope.

    • @dreadcthulhu5
      @dreadcthulhu5 10 лет назад

      Sam Oberwetter They would be impressed once they figured out it wasn't sorcery of some kind conjured by the Devil. They would also bemoan the things we've lost just as I do. I wrote a longer more detailed response, but my computer did something stupid and it got deleted and I didn't feel like retyping it all. Basically we use too many gadgets and have become fat, lazy and complacent blobs is the summary of it.

    • @neverhero3215
      @neverhero3215 10 лет назад +6

      iammadness But that's not even true. We haven't 'lost' anything. Most people don't hunt for or grow their own food, but they still can if they want to. Most people aren't tough independent woodsmen, but if thats what you want to be you can certainly go live that way. We haven't lost our ability to survive in nature, we simply don't need to employ it any longer.
