    If I only saw this 3 years ago when I was working in a lab studying artificial sweeteners😂 it was a multi variable experiment where we gave the rats either sugar water, saccharin sweetened water or regular water (control). Within those groups there were high fat/ low fat diet groups. From what I remember, the rats that got the saccharin sweetened water were noticeably bigger at the end before uh... “sacrificing” them. There’s a reason I left the lab 😂 learned how difficult holding a 1kg rat was 🙄

      Why is holding a 1 kg rat difficult? It's only 1 kilogram! Maybe it has something to do with the rat crawling on your hand?

    Thank you so much for this. I've hit fifty, and my usual practice of maintaining my sugar intake hit a new snafu. It is good to know this information. Last month, I was telling my doctor the substitutes were increasing my sugar cravings. Now this video has explained this is true, confirming I'm not crazy, I can tackle and handle my sugar demands far better. Thank you again!

      Sucralose is said to be especially bad for that. Probably because it is technically a sugar ("ose"), we just don't have the enzyme to digest it

    Dear Hank, you keep mentioning that fructose and glucose are chemically very similar. However in the context of metabolism, fructose and glucose are very different. Glucose is metabolised primarily with insulin , either into storage (fat) or glycogen for immediate use. However fructose can't. It is metabolised primarily by the liver, creating various metabolic byproducts. However, because fructose is so chemically similar to glucose, it can gum up the insulin pathways, causing the pancreas to work harder producing more insulin to metabolise the same amount of blood sugar load. In this way, both sucrose and HFCS are much harder on the liver and pancreas than rice, pasta or glucose syrup are, calorie for calorie . Can you please do a video about this metabolic difference? ( my husband and I are co-patreons)

      @Uncle Joe Believe me, we could learn a lot from you Aussies, up here in the U.S. If only we could get the egos under control of the people who are too... whatever it is.... to admit that our systems suck and that some (most, really) of our cousins across the globe have found great success in their systems.
      You'd think that if a country really wanted to be top-notch, it'd take all the best ideas from around the world and implement them at home.
      Maybe we (the United States) need to hit rock bottom before enough people are willing to admit that there are better ways to achieve a higher quality of life. I'll be long dead by then (before people are willing to admit, not before we hit rock bottom, sadly), but hopefully my grandchildren might have a chance.

      You missed the episode that mentioned the difference between artificial and natural flavors, didn't you?
      (Hint: It has nothing to do with the chemical, and everything to do with how we got it. If I take a beaker of Chemical A and a beaker of Chemical B, and mix them and they react, forming exactly 2 beakers' worth of Chemical C, then Chemical C is artificial. If, instead, I genetically engineer bacteria to produce Chemical C when fed Chemicals D, E, and F, then Chemical C is natural.
      So which would you rather have? The carefully measured and produced artificial one? or the messy bacteria-rich [Until filtered or, more likely, treated] natural version? )

    Fun fact. When McDonalds first arrived in Australia they did really poorly. Turns out we didn't like the sweetness of the hamburger buns. People who travel to America quite often comment on how sweet everything is. So maybe the real problem with corn fructose syrup is it's cheapness enabling food to be made a lot sweeter there for higher calorie than if sucrose was used.

    I have a really dangerous allergic reaction to Stevia, and it's in no way labelled on products where I live because... Well, I have no idea. If you have Hay Fever or are just prone to allergies, avoid Stevia until you're certain it doesn't affect you.
    Also, if you live in Ireland, don't drink Coca-Cola Life or Sprite. Sprite gave me blisters around my mouth for over two weeks, and the replacement of sugar in it with Stevia wasn't even shown on the front of the bottle or in the allergy information.

    Fun fact about lead in fuel (19:40 - 21:02): Almost all fuel used in piston-powered airplanes (most non-jet) still has lead in it. I looked up the amount, and its about 1.5 grams per gallon. The standard grade is 100LL (low-lead.)

    Lead: For such a long time it was used as material to make fishing sinkers, many of which remain on the bottom of lakes and ponds slowly dissolving into the water where the lead is taken up by fish and enters the food chain.

He seems to be able to absorb even complex knowledge easily, then explain it in a way that is not "dumbed down", but that almost any reasonably well educated can almost instantly understand - in fact his presentations have a "layered" aspect: the basic concepts can be easily understood by almost ANYBODY, but there is usually extra information for those who know a bit more science. FULL KUDOS!! One small beef: he talks TOO FAST!!!

    its legal to sell art and decorational pieces with a lead glaze and thats why you can still buy them but enough people are irresponsible enough to use it on tableware.
    worked in a place that did that, and always told the costumers not to use it for hot stuff or juices etc because it has lead. i was so scared my boss would fire me, if he ever found out.

    Yeah that hyperactive thing. I'm actually addicted to energy drinks and people always ask me if I dont get hyper or whatever. No, I dont. Never have. It makes me feel more awake and I feel like I can concentrate better. It really doesn't make me "over active". 'Sugar rush' sounds so dramatic too, while I feel its only a little effect. Drinking more than 2-3 cans a day does give other consequences, though. Shaky, sweaty, restless. But that also depends a lot on my other (diet) habits. And yes, I know its bad for me. Why do I drink it then? Well it tastes good and I'm probably 90% of the problem addicted to the caffeine inside. The habit basicly just slipped in the passed 10 years, drinking a little more and more each year.

    Why do humans get awkward in pauses in conversation?

    • @JossCade
      @JossCade 8 лет назад +19

      The same reason "filler" words, such as "but", "um", "like", etc, exist, it gives us time to put our thoughts together so we can continue a conversation. However "awkward silences" take it a step further. The conversation has come to a natural stop, but we've been socialised to think that if we aren't talking it's wierd and we have to keep talking, so the "awkward silence" gets longer because both parties feel uncomfortable and are desperately focusing on both finding something to talk about, and how awkward them not talking is.

      josh Subet Best tip for getting better at that is to learn not to give a shit dude. If you're looking at talking to people as a way to achieve something (a friend, a relationship, etc.) it becomes a task. once you stop caring and just take things as then come things start to get easier

    • @jeremiahlakstins1309
      @jeremiahlakstins1309 8 лет назад +1

      Communication is very complex and a lot of it is subconscious (for example we may detect changes in tone/facial expression that we don't feel are obvious enough to mention). I'd expect that to explain awkward pauses, a video on the complexities of social interaction would be necessary.

    You'll have to excuse me for the string of comments. I had no sugar, to any degree. I did have two cups of delicious Starbucks Italian Roast coffee, which I admit and is claimed to have sweet undertones. It most certainly does. I recommend it to anyone who knows their coffee. Drink it black, on the strong side, after cooling slightly. Yeeehaw! It does ruin my day because after the first cup all I want to do is drink more. Ever since I started grinding my own beans and progressing to a burr Krupps burr grinder I can't tear myself away from the counter where I make my single drip cup. Stopping to write this is a real challenge and I'm going immediately back to the coffee counter for another round. Making a cup from just ground beans is truly a spiritual event. Breathing the developing vapors is half the enjoyment, even rivals the intense delectation I got from the inhalation of leaded gasoline exhaust when I was young. And that's a redolence that's hard to beat. So, let it be known that sugar, natural or otherwise didn't cause my lengthy ramblings here, nor did the coffee. It's been shown by analysis that the dark roasted Arabica beans are lower, yes, lower in caffeine than the unpalatable Robusto grinds. There's a reason why one doesn't find Robusto whole beans. It won't make any difference in the taste whether fresh ground or 7 years old, Folgers, Maxwell House, Walmart... they are all high caffeine jump juice meant for one thing and one thing only. Taste isn't the reason. But you knew that, didn't you?.......... Pause..... Coffee Prep..... Ohhh poops.... Sirens nearby, gonna check out the scene...
    Okay, now where were we?

    My dad had lead poisoning really bad. When he got tested for it he light up like a Christmas tree all over his brain and in his various organs. We think he got it because his parents were welders and never made the children wear masks when they would go inside the shop. We also redid a house that had lead based paint and he sanded those walls down so maybe that's how he got it. we're still not sure really..

  • @PilotChris694
    @PilotChris694 8 лет назад

    One thing to add about lead, you say that the sale of leaded gasoline has ceased. But that's not completely true, for the automotive industry they do use unleaded gasoline, but almost all piston driven aircraft (with the except of some newer diesel engined aircraft which run off jet fuel) run off of 100LL. Which is 100 octane low lead fuel. The Federal Aviation Administration is working on developing a lead free alternative though.
