MSG is awesome for folks like me who need to watch sodium intake. It contains only about 40% of the sodium of table salt, and one needs to use only a tiny amount to flavor a dish. It lets me cut the amount of salt I need down to about 1/4 of what I used to put in a dish. These days, half of that salt is potassium chloride (e,g. No-Salt) and half is table salt. Gotta keep my old ticker and viaducts (hemoducts?) happy, ya know? I buy MSG in bulk at my local Asian market, at about $2.49 for a 500g (~1.1 pound) bag. That's way better than spending $3.50 or more for a 4 oz can of Ac'cent! What's inside is the exact same stuff. I must admit, eating 97% cacao chocolate bars was an interesting experience. The one square every couple of days that I usually managed to swallow removed any chocolate cravings, so probably had some health benefits just because I was consuming less fat and sugar than before. It also got me interested in how Central and South Americans originally prepared cacao, and how that became the decadent chocolatey pleasure we indulge in today. The funny thing is that there were also lots of non-food products, like lotions and bath oils, with "Aztec Chocolate". While they did make me feel nice, I doubt that they had any health benefits apart from that psychological boost.
A problem with bold claims regarding various dietary trends is that they tend to overshadow more reasonable benefits, and those benefits will then be completely overlooked. For example, turmeric. On one hand, I don't believe it cures cancer or anything, but on the other hand, I've been using it for years to treat my IBS and it has been by far the most effective way to relieve the symptoms (even compared to drugs prescribed by my doctor). I've recommended it to acquaintances who suffer from the same ailment and they've had good results. While I by no means want to imply that this is scientific proof, I also can't simply dismiss turmeric as a "hoax" or whatever.

When I was younger, my father (who studied chemistry, but.....) explained that drinking vinegar when you have a cold helps because it makes your blood more acidic. Then, in chemistry class, we learned that blood has a buffer that prevents the pH from changing unless you dump in a *lot* of additional acid or alkaline.
Just shows that being good at one science doesnt mean you have much idea about the rest. Like you wouldn't call an electrician when your water pipes burst.
vinegar is just acetic acid, the most basic acid there is, so there could be some merit to it aiding the body when consumed (by increasing the base blocks of it within your body's internal system to be more readily available and used opposed to your body needing to use energy to breakdown/build the blocks itself - allowing your body to redirect that energy into the processes that allow it to get better) wouldn't say that your father is completely wrong, just, correlation isn't causation and there's likely a lot more involved than just a 1:1 drink the magic acid when sick to increase healing - that being said, you are correct in that the body has a buffer system/loop in place to help maintain pH balance in the blood, so it really wouldn't make your blood more acidic unless you dump in a lot of additional acid
It doesn't make the blood more acidic. Vinegar is fermented, fermented foods are full of good bacteria which in turn is good for the intestines and the intestines are the immune system.
In Japan, especially many older generations believe(d) that consuming vinegar makes your body more flexible. The reasoning was apparently "You see how soft a fish becomes when you put it into vinegar."🙄
Gizelle Smith for calories take your ideal weight and add a zero. 150lb healthy adult would avg 1500. Try to eat more protein and fat than carbs, and try to eat whole food vs processed food. If you are trying to lose weight fast try intermittent fasting with calorie control.
@Ryan Struble I am not sure if you are talking about weight loss, but in the event that you are not: your daily calorie needs primarily varies on your weight, daily activity, and height. Someone who is 6 feet tall taking 1500 calories a day would be losing weight quickly, not even counting exercise. So this is not a good way to find out how many calories you need to maintain weight. The best way to figure this out is to find an average based on various TDEE calculators. If you wish to lose weight in general, it doesn't matter if intermittent fasting, keto, etc. All they do is put you at a calorie deficit. Find whatever method works for you as long as you're at a deficit. The bigger the deficit, the more weight is lost (faster loss). Exercise not required, but it's a huge boost not just to the rate but to your overall health.
Uncle Roger is gratified by this affirmation of MSG, I’m sure. I had to cook for a while for someone losing weight and unwilling to eat. So I added MSG to the food. It helped.
I always heard the "problem" with MSG was that it was a salt and a preservative. (And of course all preservatives and salt are "bad" because of an unsupported study that some reporter wrote a story on in 1276 BC and that's been repeated ever since with nobody checking.) I might be a little bitter about the whole "wrote a story a long time ago on a study that wasn't peer reviewed and nobody bothered to check" thing.
Most people can handle moderate amounts of salt and MSG just fine. I have a salt allergy, though, so I avoid salt and MSG as much as possible. It occurs naturally in food, which is how I get the salt I need to live, but I never add salt to anything I eat and avoid pre-packaged foods as much as possible because they tend to add large amounts of salt to their foods. When I do end up eating salty food for whatever reason, I am miserable afterwards. However, most people can handle salt without issue.
I've been following Hank's advice and putting a grain of salt on every bite these last four days. My blood pressure scored higher than ever, i'm sure i'll have an A+ in no time
A friend of mine from Japan insisted they had a "serious allergy" to MSG, and this made their childhood miserable as their mother used it on everything. I pointed out, they like Pringles. (Who doesn't! And yes, I'm using "they" because my friend is non-binary.) I explained, the chips have MSG. They panicked, like they thought learning this at age 30 meant INSTANT DEATH the next time they popped the top of a can. More than likely, their mom was a lousy cook who heard about the MSG thing and blamed that for nearly killing her child with bad food. (My friend also insists their husband is "deathly allergic" to GMO corn... but that's another story.)
@@rhov-anion I'm allergic to salt, and MSG is a type of salt. You still need salt to live, though, your friend included. I personally don't eat chips, but Pringles may have a significantly lower salt level than the amount of MSG their mom used when cooking. I refused to eat much of anything until I was 7, and my parents eventually figured out by tracking what I would and wouldn't eat that it was because I hated the taste of salt. Once they stopped salting all the food they made, I started eating. I was so skinny you could count my ribs until they finally changed how they cooked. Later in life I found out I have a salt allergy, which is why eating it made me so miserable. Your friend probably has a salt allergy. We still need small amounts of salt to live, but too much just makes life hell for us, which is why added salt is such a problem, including MSG.

Alkaline water was actually causing reflux in me. What I found out was that my body wasn’t producing enough acid on its own to move food through in a timely manner. So adding alkaline water on top made the issue worse. What I actually needed to do was go the other direction and increase my stomach’s ability to quickly break down food by drinking hot lemon water before meals. This seemed to fix my reflux and I stopped drinking alkaline water.
baash abiib stomach acid has a ph of between 1.5-3.5 and lemon juice has a ph of approximately 2. While in the stomach the lemon juice increases the amount of acid available to digest food. The body alkalizes the lemon juice after digesting it, not before. While the lemon juice and stomach acid are inside of the stomach they break down the other foods you eat. Even stomach acid is alkalized through the digestive process, but not before. If you add alkaline water with a ph of 9 to the stomach, it raises the ph of the contents of the stomach (making a more neutral ph) but it doesn’t change the ph of the body once digested. It only has a direct impact on the contents of the stomach before digestion. Foods digest more slowly in a neutral ph environment. This can cause the stomach not to empty as quickly or efficiently as it normally would, and it stays full for longer. Undigested food can block the small intestine, slow down the metabolism, and reduce nutrient absorption among other things. It’s actually really bad to consume large quantities of alkaline water over a long period of time. Blood has a ph of 7.35-7.45. Your body creates this almost neutral ph after what you consume goes through a series of processes. There’s no way for alkaline water to bypass your liver, kidneys, etc in order to change the ph of your blood or other organs.

So, in summary: The claims were oversimplified conclusions for the sake of making money from commissions, direct sales, and/or ad revenue and we still have little understanding of our own basic biological processes.

We go back and forth all the time, but the studies we found contradicts each other, so the discussions end up becoming weird and awkward cause we contradict ourselves not each other.....

it's because of lactose intolerance. as you get older you lose the ability to digest lactose. some people never lose it some do and those who do are the ones who are lactose intolerant. that's what causes the inflammatory effects.

Your blood usually does not come in contact with the acidic part of a tissue, which is either inside the cells or between cells inside the tissue, the blood is in blood vessels. In cases were there is contact specialized molecules transport protones or electrones from a to b to stop reactions and cells can produce buffering substances that even out the pH level. At least in a healthy body. If this does not work you very fast get health issues. Maybe you hyperventilated in the past? When you do this your pH level in your blood drops too fast for your body to compensate, because you breath out too much CO2. You will instantly develope a host of symptomes, from miscommunication of body functions, to muscle cramps, finally ending in coma if not treated. Any how. Because our body is super sensitiv to pH changes we have several mechanisms evolved to keep each tissue, each system in balance. Injury or illness can disturb those systems, and this is when we need medical treatment.

Turmeric tastes great. We have a traditional "yellow rice" with turmeic and raisins. I cook with it and paprika for flavour. Putting it in coffee seems weird
Thought the same, we use it for savoury dishes.
That's enough MSG to last you a couple of years, if you're cooking for one, as I do.. :)

Like you wouldn't call an electrician when your water pipes burst.
vinegar is just acetic acid, the most basic acid there is, so there could be some merit to it aiding the body when consumed (by increasing the base blocks of it within your body's internal system to be more readily available and used opposed to your body needing to use energy to breakdown/build the blocks itself - allowing your body to redirect that energy into the processes that allow it to get better)
wouldn't say that your father is completely wrong, just, correlation isn't causation and there's likely a lot more involved than just a 1:1 drink the magic acid when sick to increase healing - that being said, you are correct in that the body has a buffer system/loop in place to help maintain pH balance in the blood, so it really wouldn't make your blood more acidic unless you dump in a lot of additional acid

MSG is a sodium salt, and seems to have all the negatives that go along with that... which themselves _are_ overinflated, but still exist.
Its neither very good or very bad, but it does help taste.
Wow thats really interesting! It always intrigues me when the seemingly obvious solution is actually the opposite of what you should do.
But lemon is turned in to alkaline when it reaches the stomach
baash abiib that’s not how chemistry works
baash abiib stomach acid has a ph of between 1.5-3.5 and lemon juice has a ph of approximately 2.

My Japanese grandma has been putting Ajinomoto in everything she’s ever cooked and she’s the best cook I’ve ever met
You had me at 'two large chocolate bars a day'. Done. Already on it.
Marketing 101 "it cures cancer" job done.
Great videos. Please do one about the supposed inflammatory effects of gluten and of dairy products. Thanks for considering it.
it's because of lactose intolerance. as you get older you lose the ability to digest lactose. some people never lose it some do and those who do are the ones who are lactose intolerant. that's what causes the inflammatory effects.
See, you just can't trust these 'health enthusiasts'. That's why I stick to a much healthier diet of pizza and donuts...
Pizza is a vegetable in some countries.
Your videos are actually really good. I'm surprised you don't have way more subscribers.
As long has the doughnut has chocolate icing, you’re good!
I think you just invented the Circular Diet :o
OH I have/had MSG/Chinese food disease. Yeah turns out I'm allergic to shellfish :P shrimp are bad and should feel bad.
That bbq pork though... yummy
I'm so sorry you're allergic to shellfish because shrimp, crab and lobster taste amazing to me. But it's not the shrimps fault. They did nothing wrong.
I'm allergic to shellfish. I'm also allergic to salt, and MSG is a type of salt. I hate videos like this that make people who have legit MSG allergies sound like it's all in their head. Allergies are real.
@@xzonia1Were you been diagnosed medically? If you’re allergic to salt, you’re also allergic to your own kidneys.

It’s the glutamate that causes the Umami flavour and it is commonly added to prepared foods in its non-salt forms. If you eaten anything with rosemary, yeast, or a handful of other extracts, you have eaten added glutamate.
A salt allergy I am guessing is also extraordinarily rare that putting a disclaimer for it seems kind of silly.
@@EnigmaticLucas Yes, by multiple doctors. And yes, I've had kidney issues my whole life, thanks.
Needed something to listen to before martial arts, this was perfect , thanks as always guys!
I feel like the takeaway from this video could be interpreted as "eat whatever you want because it does not matter either way" which obviously is a bad idea. I'd love to see a video like this about dietary habits that do contribute to good health.
14:30 Did the studies control for quality of the diet in their control group? Could just be caused by a poor diet in the control group, making the intervention group look good.
It's a well known fact that chocolate keeps dementors at bay! 🤗
Nah, it just helps you recover after an attack 😂
Garlic the only super food. That stuff is friggin delicious.
Onion is far superior, but garlic is fine too.
It makes social distancing easier too
@@DrCatdeJong lmaoo
Yeah, onion over garlic, but I can't live without either.
@@mattakudesu go with both! Onion and garlic go with everything.

16:55 How does your body prevent a chemical reaction from taking place when you have alkaline blood coming into contact with acidic tissue?
Very good look into the actual data behind these claims! Unfortunately claims are often taken too far by the public, considering the actual evidence present
"The best nutritional supplement is a grain of salt," is probably the wittiest dietary advice I've ever heard.
So long as you only add ONE grain .... lol ...
not really woke just true though not true in a 1st world as everything is just caked with salt here and we already get to much
@@rampage3337
I didn't know that "woke" had the connotations that it does 2 years ago when I wrote that. I think I'll change it to something else. Thanks.
Yes, when i am in hospital, they said i have to take three infuse bottle of albumin because i lacks few things in my blood.
One bottle for a day.
You know what, its mean i have to stay there three more days.
I said, wait for my brother decision. He is the one that pays the bill.
While i grumble and mumble, here come the pretty dokter.
And what she said was i just need to take two pinch of salt to fix the problem.
After the lab result out, it turn out i no longer lacks anything in my body.
Two pinch of salt fix the problem
5:55, I left the video right here, and came back another time to this wonderful opening
At the beginning, I was like, yeah add Tylenol to your coffee, that'll get rid of inflammation.
I love how they pronounce turmeric. It cracks me up.

I'm doing chores and listening to whatever plays on this channel on my headphones. Ranging from hair, octopus, and now I'm here.
I've always been a fan of MSG and it actually gets on my nerves when people state nonsense about it without having any idea what they're talking about, it's along the same lines as anti 5g, antimaskers, antivaxers and Flerfs who Dunning-Kruger their way through life... 😂
@Steven Zhou its hilarious to see people talk about "MSG allergies" when they eat out and then you see them eat an entire bag of potato
chips later.
The same folks will eat pizza, which is full of msg from the tomatoes and cheese, without issue.
@@armaros820 It reminds me of those arseholes who go out for dinner and ask for gluten free meals saying they have gluten intolerance then start sneaking food off their friends/partners plates... 🤦♂️💥
Thankfully I've heard a lot of restaurants now watch people who ask for that since the chefs have to go completely out of their way to make such dishes and when they find out they were lying all along they show them up publicly 🤣
Karens need to be shown up publicly too, thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster for channels that expose them 🤣 although my brain could do without the pounding headaches after watching such dumbfuckery 🤣
@@DoctaOsiris as a person with celiac, it's incredibly hard to stick to a gluten free diet when you watch your friend gobble pizza. And yes. I cheat. And pay for it later. Don't assume

"People, and even scientists..." so scientists aren't people.
"Rats aren't people." Therefore scientists ARE rats. Can we experiment on them? What's the breeding protocol to prevent telomere mutation?
I love this format!
Basically to be healthy we need to get a bit of every different vitamin, mineral, etc. Too much of anything is not the way to go
This was very informative! Thanks for uploading! And I love long videos, too!
How to make alkaline water:
1. Take water
2. Add some baking soda
I got an ad in the middle of this video for a cure to bad eyesight. "Throw away your glasses and contacts!" Not right now, dude.
Slightly more expensive pee got me
I really enjoy the videos you guys make. It would be grate if you guys include the sources of information, particularly “studies”. Every time you mention “A study shows….” and you don’t mention what study, it sounds exactly as those mentioned in local news, which in many many cases, are not real studies, or are studies done not following the scientific method, or studies made with rats, etc.
Maybe the study can be indicated by text at the bottom of the screen, that way you are supporting the data you are explaining.
Keep the great work!
Me: Has literally eaten a 100% cocoa chocolate bar, meant for baking, enjoys the ever loving hell out of the complex and bitter taste of it.
Other people: I can't eat dark chocolate, Hershey's Special Dark is way too bitter.
Me: Hersey's Special Dark is only 45% cocoa. There are better brands that have 48% and they still consider that as milk chocolate. Come talk to me after you've tried something higher than 60%.
yeah we got a dark chocolate brand here and they don't even offer under 60% standard product is 70% and 2nd is 80% then i think 60% is 3rd place most sold and then 90% is the least sold
Everything below 50% is not chocolate, but an insult to Quetzalcoatl
Milk chocolate doesn't even taste like chocolate. It tastes like milk and sugar.
