Propranolol

  • Originally introduced in 1962, propranolol remains among the top 50 prescribed drugs. This beta blocker treats a variety of ailments ranging from exercise induced chest pain or angina pectoris to high blood pressure. It additionally controls heart rate in atrial fibrillation. Propranolol may improve essential tremor and prevent recurrent attacks of migraine headache.
If begun within a week or so after a heart attack, propranolol offers the potential of avoiding another cardiovascular event. It also slows the heart rate in those with an overactive thyroid gland, steadies the hand in sporting activities including archery and reduces the likelihood of esophageal bleeding among individuals with cirrhosis.
Bronchial asthma, heart failure and an already slow heart rate generally suggest avoidance of propranolol. It may mask early symptoms of hypoglycemia in diabetics and may actually precipitate chest pain or a heart attack if abruptly discontinued.
Over the decades since propranolol won FDA approval, several other beta blockers have significantly eroded its market share. Other more popular drugs in the same family include metoprolol, carvedilol and atenolol.

My baby son takes this for a hemangioma on his skin. It has worked really well. I have noticed his hands are colder in the evening. I am not a doc/pharm guy but I imagine this is due to vasoconstriction. Doesn't seem to present any issue. Thought I'd mention this hemangioma thing because I felt it pretty interesting/unusual that they use beta blockers for skin conditions. But it really works. A great video as always.

I hardly use it now as my anxiety got better over time (possibly through the propranolol medication and also through working on myself and my depression). Keep in mind, I was also diagnosed with severe generalized anxiety, so check with your primary care doctor to see if the medication or dosage would be right for you. Good luck

If you don’t want to feel tied to a medication, I hate to say it but propranolol might not be for you. I’ve taking a year and half at 60 mg ER for migraines as well. It certainly helped the migraines be shorter. Where the worst pain was days, it now only lasts for hours. But you can’t ever miss a dose and you will start to feel it in your body when you don’t take it on the hour ever day. Opt for ER so you don’t have to take it multiple times a day. Less withdrawal sensations in the hours before you take it.

I took it, like 80mg extended release (in divided dosages) just for one day and next day I felt eye pain, cloudy vision, extreme sensitivity to light, halos around lights. I stopped it then and there. Would the eye symptoms go away?

I took 120mg of propranolol for flying anxiety and it really didn't make a huge difference at all. I still felt very uncomfortable whilst in the air. Does anyone have any better recommendations for something that will actually work?? A friend has suggested mirtazapine. Would they be better ?

Jesus Christ a 120mg! That’s a huge dosage I take 40mg daily split into two doses. I’m surprised you didn’t have any side effects.

I have read lately about some NOT so good effects of taking these.....so im glad i dont take a really high dose...as trying to come off them....has to be done gradually and carefully.

The research online seems conflicted; some says Propranolol is good stuff; other research says it can cause AV node block (arrhythmias caused by the electrical system of the Atria and Ventricles being blocked or short-circuited by this drug) and even heart failure, in certain populations. I tried to taper and got down from 120 mg to 80 mg/day over thirteen years or so; and then down again, to 20 mg/day in 2023. I could not get off it completely yet due to high heart rate, significant palpitations, high blood pressure and irregular heartbeat.
