- Here are three of my coolest metal finishes that I use everyday in my shop. I hope these add to your list of choices when looking for unique finishes for your next metal project.

Thanks , super cool , i was working in a factory , they put in The garbage alot of steel cuts , i wanted to make some skulptures with It , this seams super cool
I've seen people use felt wheels to make circular swirls in gold and aluminum leaf. I bet that clear coat trick would look amazing on that.
I really enjoyed that copper sulphate patina you showed a while back too.

Just watched your other 5 technique rising mild steel video to get an idea of what to do on some rustic wood stove heat shields I'm building. That texture, paint, clear-coat on the stainless is insane! Gonna have to play with that one sometime also.

Hi Doug...love watching and learning from all your videos. I have a set of painted vintage lockers that I would to restore. My mission is to bring them down to raw material and somehow make the metal a dull darker finish. Is this possible?

For that first bash finish I like using a brass wirewheel, gets the color on very quick and very even
I also like the brass wheel. I have had difficulty using that method on larger pieces where consistency is import.
Thanks Doug. I was rusting some things with vinegar and hydrochloric acid and thought of you. I'll have to try some of those other techniques.

@@ArtfullyRogueI went to my local auto paint store and they were dumbfounded and didn't know what base coat, clear coat was. I even showed them your video and they had no clue. So obviously the store here is no help. Do you have contact information for where you got yours? I may just have to have it shipped to me.
Doing a custom bar with industrial black pipe, old gray barn wood, and corrugated barn tin. I need to rust the tin more and I'm going to try your copper sulfate method or the muriatic acid method. Whichever rusts it faster. Because of the truly amazing techniques you produce, I am now a subscriber. 70 years old and been in the trades forever and still learning. Thanks for your expertise...

I also cannot find this kind of paint. I went to a specialty auto motive paint shop and they had never heard of such a thing and cannot grasp the concept of the paint. I really need to locate this paint. I'm in Washington
Thank you so much for your great video! Love your work! The last technique is exactly the look I want for a fireplace surround I designed for my house. I am an Interior Designer and my husband is an Architect and we love to make things ourselves. I just have one quick question for you on the 3rd treatment you show on the galvanized steel with Vinegar. Do you need to prepare the metal before applying the vinegar and is there a sealing process necessary after it is completed? Thank you!!
For rusting the galvanized metal, it's necessary to remove the galvanization first before you add the vinegar. Once you achieve the rust you want, seal it with a clear laquear

I use copper sulfate on occasion for projects. One of my older videos is on copper sulfate
I see my shop isn't the only one that reaks of vinegar. Great video. I found if I have time just putting the sheet metal flat on the lawn and shovel some dirt over the top let sit for a few weeks. Funny thing to do to new metal.
There are some great ways to rust and or weather sheet metal. No dirt near my shop or I'd give that a try

Hi. The 3rd option is great but wanted to know can you just spray the clear coat on top to protect it and it stays the same? I want to create a photo wall and add the photos to the metal but obviously don’t want the rust to damage the photos. Any help would be great 👍🏼
As long as you add several coats of a clear coat sealer, the photos will be fine
Hi Doug awesome Video as always, quick question what strength acid did you apply to remove the mill scale, I am in the uk and have been looking for a easier and more uniform way of removing the scale to apply a copper sulphate finish after.

If you have time and the piece can be submerged you can use regular vinegar. However on bigger muriatic acid is the way I go, I use a swimming pool acid. The label shows 14.5% hydrogen chloride. If your local hardware store doesn't have it, check with a swimming pool store

Really like the background texture with the the decal. Also, the apple cider vinegar is really cool. I thought it almost imparted the look of burl to the metal. You might have mentioned it before, or I missed it, but when you have achieved the desired amount of rust, do use some chemical to neutralize the vinegar? do you just wash it off? or do you just leave it and spray a finish on it?
3:30 I expected Candy Apple to be red.
Yeah it was weird when I asked the paint person to repeat what they said. I've always associated the words candy apple with the color red. Apparently it's a type of paint...a bit confusing though
Thanks for the video! What do you do to stop rust to bite into metal further down ? I mean you got that look, but it will rust metal completely within few month? Will just clear coat preserve it or something? )))
I use a spray on clear coat and it has worked for me so far. I think as long as you eliminate oxygen getting to the metal it should be fine.
Hello sir super inspired by your video. Was curious if you could tell me more about the second method candied paint so I can get someone locally to make one for me. Having some kickback from the paint shops saying it's not possible.
I actually had to go to an auto paint store. As I understand it, it's called candied apple but that doesn't refer to it's color, maybe it's a brand, I'm not sure, I'd need to find that out. They create the color you want but do not add a base so it ends up being translucent
Can you tell us more about the gloss coat in the second method? Is this something I’d have to get at a car paint shop? Or is there a hardware store option you can recommend?

Hi, Love your channel. I'm looking for options for coloring stainless steel if there are any? Do you have any experience with adding color to ground stainless panels?
I don't often work with stainless so I'm not really sure how regular metal patinas work on stainless

1) how do you stop the rusting once it looks the way you want? (in methods 1 & 3.)
2) how do you prevent further "natural" rusting processes in the future?
Once the item is rusted to the degree I want, I spray a clear coat over it

Thanks! I'm not sure I understand you question. most of whats being created is rust except for the blue painted piece
I'm also curious about this - how would you stop the piece from rusting further if you wanted it to maintain the finish you created? Would you use a wax after achieving the look you wanted?

I was just wondering if the brass on steel rusts with time and does it oxidise?
It's not something I've looked in to however since it is steel, I can assume that under the right conditions and without any type of sealant, it will rust.
I love using vinegar to create designs on knives etc. I get some really great patterns from sprinkling horseradish all over the steel. You can also use mustard and bubble wrap. It all comes down to the vinegar in those products though. I add a little extra vinegar to the horseradish.

Once you get the shade of rust you prefer with the vinegar method how do you "stop" the process?
I just spray a clear coat sealer. I use the Deft brand of spray

The nice thing about stainless is that it doesn't need a finish. You can often purchased a few different types of pre finished stainless if you buy from a steel supplier. Brushed, polished or plain

4:17 how did you achieve the zigzag pattern on the metal?
I used the same angle grinder I used for the swirls, just zigzagged
Will the vinegar work on stainless?
no unfortunately it won't. I have gotten stainless to rust though. Use a flap wheel that's been used on mild steel. The small mild steel particles will embed in the stainless when you grind it and it will rust
Hello.. Could you please give me some advise with this?, well I own a 1964 car that has most of the paint gone and is now metal bare and 70% has now a nice slight natural rust. I just bought the car for restoring it but seeing that rust I really liked and I want to leave that kind of vintage style or patina style, but I would like to protect in order that rust gets fosfatized or something that helps stop more rusting, I dont want the sheet to be destroyed over the time. What do you suggest?, If I apply dioxidine, it Will make the rust kind of black,, and i like the orange color it now gives. Then I dont know if i should put a clear coat or not.. And finally i dont know if some zinc based product could help me protecting the metal without damaging that natural rust I have. THANKS !!!! I LL TRY TO POST A PIC OF MY CAR.
I would spray a clear coat on it. This will slow the rusting process down and not affect the look much. If anything, a clear coat makes it go a little darker but once you cut off the oxygen it stops the process
Is the vinegar patina affected by welding? Does it darken or burn away or affect the weld at all?
Honestly I've never really noticed the welding doing much to the rust. The rust does get to the weld when I hit the spot weld with a grinder when cleaning it up.

The auto paint dealer called it a candy apple which I think is a type of brand as opposed to the color.

I cannot find the base coat clear coat paint he is talking about... I went to a specialty automotive paint shop who deals in all things in automotive paint and they never heard of anything of the sort. I even asked them to make me a can of clear with a small amount of paint pigment added and they saod they can't do thay. But the do have the ability to put a custom color in a can for me... Ugh. Feeling defeated. Need help.
