@yuki cross I get that, and it’s totally fine, it’s just alarming when someone who is both a tattoo artist and in a competition misspells something permanent. It would be like a NASA engineer with dyscalculia messing up calculations on a launch, like.... you can’t take that back now, yikes.
@yuki cross I dont think its serious just make the canvas sign saying that its spelled correctly alot of artists do that nowadays and who doesn't check the spelling on something thats going on them.
Totally agree. There was an episode where Dave said he thought a cute girl who got a tattoo from Jesse walked out 'a little less cute' because he didn't think it was feminine enough... Like, it's HER choice. Some guys are so sexist.
Yeah I really like Dave, but that comment sucked. He didn't even mention how good the tattoo looked, it's so clean and really impressive considering how big the piece is and how little time he had to do it. That's a textbook example of sexism, he judged the art based of the gender of the person wearing the art, not the quality of the actual art.
It’s really frustrating that all the tattoo artists are rolling their eyes and throwing fits over tattooing people who are getting their first tattoo. I get that people aren’t the easiest clients, but Every Tattooed Person has been that person before! It’s your job to make sure they know whats feasible and what’s not, to warn them about pain, and Be Professional by giving them something they want. They act like it’s such an inconvenience. Bad vibes man
And they are already extremely nervous and need to be out at ease about what they’re about to go through. They don’t need bad vibes from the artist on top of being nervous.
Right! I’m about to scour the web for a tattoo artist to do my first tattoo and now I’m thinking about how they must be feeling about giving me my first tattoo...
I mean... That is mainly the reason why I wouldn't get a tattoo with any writings ever no matter what. I'm not good at noticing writing errors so I don't trust myself and if I don't trust me like hell would I trust an artistic person who are known for being absent minded and having their head in the clouds. And there are so many misspelled tattoo nightmares happening it's a huge no no from me

I remember when I was looking to get my first tattoo on my ribs and 4 different shops turned me down when I told them I wanted a rib piece as my first tattoo just after turning 18, telling me I wouldn’t be able to handle the pain. The one artist who said yes got finished the piece in 8 hours in one session and I’m always grateful for him
I don't know why everyone's arguing with you, Brandon, that absolutely happens. My second tattoo was a full back piece, and my artist was like "It's legitimately a lot, and we don't know how long you can sit for, so it's no telling how many sessions/hours we'll need to complete it" which was an awfully nice/professional way of saying what those artists told you, but without saying no and being accommodating. Artists are always going to be circumspect of big tattoos or tattoos in notoriously difficult places if you don't already have a lot of ink - some are gonna be assholes about it.
6:16 As a female I was incredibly offended by this, its the clients choice and you should respect that choice and I think the mice look cool its a cool concept and it doesn't make anyone less feminine for something on someones body, like your body your choice if I am mistaken then tell me why I am mistaken because I think this was not only disrespectful to the tattoo artist but to the client as well, like I really wouldn't even do it for the money anymore if I was told I should have gone for a "more feminine peice" I would simply flip the judge off and walk away.
The ideals of the masculine and the feminine within classic art has been developed for thousands of years. Modernity trying to muddy the waters and blur those lines does not make it correct to do so.

That’s so sad that the client says “it’s amazing”, while the artist is saying “this tattoo sucks” .... that would make me feel bad about getting a tattoo.
If the person wants it....why should it matter what gender it’s on? I love Marvel and am working on finishing a sleeve of characters, but because I’m a woman I shouldn’t cause that’s seen as a “guy thing”. That’s basically what you’re saying. Not every girl goes for cute shitty “girly” tattoos.
Right it's not for the tattoo artist decide her tat should look "cute" unless that's what she asks for. New school is a very specific style and since she directly asked for it I'm pretty sure she knew what she was getting.
"Whyy do we have to tattoo virgin skin?" Well, probably because you want to be a tattoo artist. Duh? Do you just turn everyone away who wants their first tattoo?
They say it cause its bad for the competition, cause theyre def one of the hardest to tattoo on, especially in this cause theres a time limit and if the client ever has to stop cause of pain thats hurting the artists chance. Not saying its smart to turn away clients with first tattoo. Also they are being ridiculous in the show but it makes sense in this competition
@Jackson-cd3mv virgins usually don't exactly know what they want either, don't know many different styles, new/old school, so communicating is hard 😂 (my 1st I did alot of research and thinking)
@jakkbatt4711 my first (and only tattoo to date) was a flash, Egyptian eye 🤣🤣 and guess what? I still love it. My buddy was getting a new tattoo, and I went along with him. And I've always wanted one myself, but didn't know what to get. But I saw this in the flash book, and I knew I wanted it, because it actually meant multiple different things for my life. Now my plan is to get more symbols, almost in a hieroglyphic style, each one representing a different significant point in my life. Plus, this one eye on my leg is looking mighty lonely these days 🤣 but I still love it. No regrets. But yeah. I still stand by my opinion. Yeah, virgins are usually harder to work with. But they need their first tattoo to even get any kind of experience. A good tattoo artist would be able to find a way to work with their ideas. Not just turn them down for being "too difficult" for them to handle.
IKR! The amount of artist on this show whining oh tattoo Virginia are the worst older clients are the worst this is the worst thats the worst. I'm like you are not ink master dude change your profession or get it done to the best of your ability or go home!
Melanie Jane i don’t think i’m real life they are as hesitant. when it’s a time crunch, you don’t want to tattoo someone who might possibly handle the pain bad.
And it doesn't even matter if its not their first tattoo, some people can handle more pain than others. They can be "virgins" and do better than a non "virgin".
Idk, they were testing fundamentals, and the girl straight up said yes to his design. The challenge wasn't to give gender accurate tattoos, it was to give fundamentally correct tattoos, which I think he pulled off perfectly. The graduation was smooth, linework was crisp, and the composition was well done. I feel like the judges were purposely giving him the boot.
Its drama for the show. Imagine that one season where the clients had to vote on the worst tattoo of the day. Sitting in a room and everyone votes your tattoo as the worst one. That would SUCK.
That’s why they were extremely nice in the second clip. I also think that one was definitely staged and probably had longer than 3 hours to do the tattoo. Season 5 felt very staged, specially that tall artist that got kicked off the show for smoking pot.
they are nitpicking in this show. Very few tattoos will be 100% flawless, it's more about how noticeable the flaws are (and or how ugly the design is) that matters. A spot where the line doesn't connect by a micrometer, or some random fine line blended in too much is really not a big deal and most people never even notice them on their own tattoos, let alone other people noticing them.
6:16 wtf does her gender have anything to do with the tattoo? It's HER tattoo! The client gets what the client wants as long as it's feasible. "You could've done anything you wanted" uh, no, he had to do what the client wanted. Imagine getting a cool af tattoo only to have some rando come up and say they hate it cuz it's not feminine enough like, who even are you? Is this guy even a tattoo artist? If not why is he judging tattoos? "I'd hate to see a cute girl walk into a shop and walk out a little less cute" gtfo
Oh my god, they do that ALL THE TIME. On this one season, he said the girl "lost her femininity" like wtf, having a skull on you wont make you any less feminine.
In case you didn't know, that Dave Navarro . He's not a tattoo artist, he's a guitarist. I'm totally with you though. And they say he has a good eye for art or whatever.
if it's a woman's tattoo, it's feminine etc. The client gets a tattoo that they want, what their gender is has nothing to do with the ink they can get. Heck I'm a dude with flowers on his arm, doesn't make me less masculine smh
Did that judge just say he’d “hate to see a cute girl walk into a shop and walk out a little less cute” over a tattoo that wasn’t “feminine” ??? Damn, the sexism.
If he's essentially saying he doesn't want to fuck someone up with a bad tattoo I don't see your point. If it was sexist it would be worded along the lines of- "Women need to get cute tattoos" / "Women shouldn't get tattoos". He's obviously pro-tattoo and art also, if you know the judges art style he 100% doesn't specialize in aesthetically cute or feminine tattoos.
They desperately needed some woman judges on this show who cares if it is not feminine enough the tattoo alone should be judged not the person who got it
Considering the other judges and the vibe of the show the producers go for they probably would of found a women with the same views as them just to prove their point
they've had female guest judges who were more critical than the rest. it's a tattoo competiton show about tattoo application and readability, not about men or women being better than each other. the gender of the judge or the artist doesn't matter. i mean whenever i've got a tattoo, i've never thought i want this tattoo and i want it only tattooed by a male tattooist. i look at the catalogue of tattoos from a variety of artists and choose the artist that i want based on their artwork.
@@rossbrown6029 but in this case a great ass tattoo got some really shitty criticism exactly because the judge was a man. It's really annoying that the judges are hell-bent on women getting "feminine" tattoos rather than getting whatever they want, especially considering they are MEN trying to define what makes a woman feminine. Absolutely not okay. But Eric's tattoo was gorgeous and definitely deserved to win
That’s because men get to define what feminine is. There is nothing wrong with saying the obvious. A woman should remain a woman and not turn into some monster of lognes. All these woke bums watching this makes me so tired. Go touch grass.
Are you surprised? Dave is the other other guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Yknow, behind Josh Klinghoffer, who is behind John Frusciante. RHCP kind of has a history of not treating women very good in their earlier years.
While I agree with your point, I'd get a tattoo from one of the winners of the competition. I would not have told that women that i messed up her angel. She walked away really upset Edit : i know she messed up the tattoo! But out right saying "oh i really fucked up your tattoo" to a canvas, is dumb. That was my point. A lot of good tattoo artists on this channel! tell stories about how they called back clients when they realize they've made a mistake. Contestants can't do that here so there's no use mentioning it; there are "worst tattoos you've ever done" segments on this channel. The artists will cringe at their old work and talk about times they even ask clients "can i fix that" usually the client says "no i love this tattoo" you think that clients would still love that tattoo if immediately afterwards the artist said to there face "oh i fucked that up" no. They'd hate it forever, even if its exactly what they asked for or a design they liked. Its all about how you feel about that tattoo, not what others think

Some may be acting dramatic because they're in a competition and want "easy" canvases because they want an easy win. Sometimes the size, style and details that the client wants can't all be completed well in 6 hours. I think it's a mix of factors but primarily because its on TV so they need drama and that the tattoo artist can't give what the canvas wants within the constraints. However, in real life, tattoo artists have time, they are more comfortable and adaptable because they recognize that tattoo is about you and not them.

6:31 I actually really like that tattoo. Never been tattooed so wonder what its like, but I feel there is just no way I could sit there for six hours straight of getting tattooed, I think I would lose self control of what I do sooner. At least without multiple breaks. If I'm in intense pain I may not even last a full minute, I dont know just how painful those tattoos are. I'm actually really impressed by the patience of people who get tattoos. As well as by their courage, not for the tattoo processes itself, but for all the issues you can risk when recovering from a tattoo and how easy it is to mess up, like just by picking on scalp which you may do subconsciously. I hope there is a an option for more impatient people to have the same tattoos divided into multiple sessions (in general, not this show).
I have my experience which may or may not help. I got my first tattoo 2 years ago and it was way less scary and painful than I expected. I got my inner forearm tattooed and at the most it felt like semi deep cat scratches. I felt like it stung more than hurt, and for the moments it stung more I was able to take a breather. If getting a tattoo is something you’d really want, I’d consider looking at a tattoo pain diagram to decide where your first should go. And then use that experience to gauge if you think how could handle a different area/larger piece. I heard for some larger pieces/tattoo’s with longer time’s, artist’s may offer or insist on breaking up the appointment between separate sessions. Where they’ll do maybe the outline in one session and then the color/shading in another. I just know from my experience that the saying “once you have one tattoo you’ll want 100 more” is 1000% true.
@@Meepthegeek Yeah, I was really surprised how little it actually hurt! Just like intense pins and needles where it was actually happening, not the screaming and hollering you see in films & comedies.
Didn't realise how misogynistic the tattoo world was smh. Not only did the judges bash it for looking 'unfeminine' but in other segments, you have men have bruised egos when women do better than they do, you have male tattoo artists change what their female canvas wanted to be more pastel and soft, you have people ogling boobs instead of being professional, and a thousand different tattoos of women's faces that are slammed for being not pretty enough.
Tbf, every "un pretty woman" tattoo was ugly because of technical reasons, not that they weren't hot enough. But the language does show that kind of culture in the tattoo world. Edit: a word
They had a team-tattoo of faces, where they called The woman, tattooed by a woman, ugly because of a missing dip between nose and forehead. It was so disrespectful as it was a beautiful rendition of a “non-caucasian” woman by a non-caucasian woman on a non-caucasian man. It was SUCH A RUDE comment!
A lot of this is for the cameras, but the judges saying shit like that is reflecting a VERY old school attitude. This is why as a client you've gotta research your shops. As a woman, I always make sure the artists I'm working with will give me what I want and what's going to look really good, regardless of whether they think a woman should have specific imagery on them or not.
"Id hate to see a cute girl walk into a shop and walk out less cute" Why cant men just realise any tattoo looks good on women. The amount of times i have been told my pirate tattoo is too manly is ridiculous
I have a pocket watch tattoo myself, styled to look like it's coming through my skin. It's stopped just short of 4oclock. When i was in the Middle East I had 3 insanely close calls to buying the farm. Mine is to show that Death didn't quite get to #4 before its time to get me ran out.
These tattoo virgins are super brave getting a big tattoos as their firsts. I got my first tattoo couple months ago and honestly it wasn’t that bad, but wouldn’t have imagined getting a tattoo as big as the ones on here as a first. Props to those guys.
My first tattoo was a half sleeve from my friend who was a tattoo artist, Sadly he was murdered last year was thinking of getting his name tattoo'd on one of the blank spots of the sleeve but decided to leave it as he did it.
I sat for 8 hours on my first tattoo with only two breaks so the artist could get some food. I was fine until the 7 hour mark then it was absolutely killing 😂The white ink was the worst part because they had to go deepest with it.
6:25 "walk out a little less cute" and if i wanna walk out less cute? :/ what if i want a giant bloody mass on my forehead huh? I hate how they bash the artists for that the people wanted
For my first tattoo, I drew my first dog's name (Tiny) and a heart around her paw print. I completely designed it myself, was very satisfied with how it turned out and the tattoo artist just transferred it to my skin and turned it into a tattoo. To this day it's one of my favorite tattoos I have, and now that Tiny has since died I treasure it even more. I would love to one day get a memorial portrait of her face next to it on my chest.
I got my first tattoo the other day, and I plan on doing that. I started with one part that can stand on its own, it took a little over 2 hrs, and now I've decided that I definitely want to go back and get the rest of it done! But it's nice to have that choice
Totally surprised that the Pocket Watch won. That was a really amateur drawing and the watch lacked details. The oval at the top (the bow) was just slapped on top and doesn't look connected to anything. Not a good tattoo.
george Richan He tattooed a completely different time and both the clock minute and hour hand are the same length so you can’t tell if one is pointing out the hour or minute
I came very close to passing out during a tattoo. Crazy part is I was in a full conversation with the artist at the time and I wasn't breathing enough. Went from full conversation, pain was fine, to my eyesight caving in and nearly going out. Ended up eating a few Skittles, smoking a cigarette, drinking a bottle of water and finishing.
THIS. I have always thought they should have had a different limit instead of the time, maybe a body part restriction or certain size they couldn't go over. but everyone works at a different speed, and each person getting tattooed feels pain different, and timing the tattoo just makes people rush and not produce good PERMANENT work
THATS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING. Of course the tattoo is gonna look weird because your putting a time on it makes the artist feel rushed. Let the artist work and show they’re true potential.
But a better artist is putting out better quality in less time. Plus dont artists charge by the hour? Would hate to get a tattoo of a small butterfly that took 7 hours and cost me a stack
Got my first tattoo on my 18th birthday (about a month ago). A fist sized Luna moth smack in the middle of my chest. I got almost full color same day and I was in the chair for about 4 1/2 hours straight. Moral of the story: just because someone is a tattoo virgin, doesn’t mean they can’t handle it!
“Just keep sitting still you’re sitting like a champ” *camera pans to him sleeping* I remember getting my hannya flash piece and I fell asleep during it and the artist kind of freaked out thinking I passed out, but man getting tattoos are so relaxing to me
Getting tattoo's for me is like therapy lmao. On my last session of my half sleeve I totally didn't fall asleep during the 5 hour session. Hats off to the virgin who got their ribs done first go.
For anyone here who is also a tattoo virgin, a tattoo needle feels like someone is carving into you with a knife. It fades to a dull burn over meaty areas like a thigh, but over ribs and hips you feel every line as it happens. Especially over ribs you also really feel the vibration of the machine.
Got my first tattoo after Thanksgiving of 2021 a little above my wrist. Pain wise, 6/7 out of 10. Felt like having a sunburn repeatedly scratched. 40 minutes to complete but after it was done it was like a dull numbness. I think the worst part was removing the tagaderm.
I would describe it as burning hot cat scratches in less painful areas. It’s not like it’s even close to the worst pain I’ve felt but it definitely hurts
Do you have a tattoo on the back side of your forearm? I really want a piece there but I’m nervous about the pain level. It’s meaty so it’s gonna be less painful than other areas but I still don’t know how much it’ll hurt

❄

10:23 is the COOLEST most BEAUTIFUL reason to get a pocket watch tattoo.
I have a pocket watch tattoo myself, styled to look like it's coming through my skin. It's stopped just short of 4oclock. When i was in the Middle East I had 3 insanely close calls to buying the farm. Mine is to show that Death didn't quite get to #4 before its time to get me ran out.
Aaron, I'm sorry but that inverted rose looks TERRIBLE.
i gasped when i saw it
It reminds me of a blue cabbage
Such a shame because that shade of cobalt blue on her skin tone is stunning and a normal rose could have been beautiful tracking her shoulder joint!
I liked the idea & color of the rose. But desperately think it needed a black outline at least around the petal layers.
Yup looks like a huge blue blob
These tattoo virgins are super brave getting a big tattoos as their firsts. I got my first tattoo couple months ago and honestly it wasn’t that bad, but wouldn’t have imagined getting a tattoo as big as the ones on here as a first. Props to those guys.
My first tattoo was a half sleeve from my friend who was a tattoo artist, Sadly he was murdered last year was thinking of getting his name tattoo'd on one of the blank spots of the sleeve but decided to leave it as he did it.
@@QrazedGaming Fuck man, im sorry to hear. I’m glad he was the one who did your sleeve.

Tattooers don't charge you for breaks though. But you sound pretty tough anyway.
I can’t imagine sitting for 6 hours on your first tattoo!!! Lol that’s wild!
Did it and was only the first session of three
not that bad
I sat for 8 hours on my first tattoo with only two breaks so the artist could get some food. I was fine until the 7 hour mark then it was absolutely killing 😂The white ink was the worst part because they had to go deepest with it.
My first was a half sleeve
My first tattoo was 2 days ago and it was 6 hours. Got my baby boy that just passed away. Love it
6:25 "walk out a little less cute" and if i wanna walk out less cute? :/ what if i want a giant bloody mass on my forehead huh? I hate how they bash the artists for that the people wanted
:/ = =/
I like how they rip into all their tattoos but when the actual canvas is there, everyone's tattoo are fantastic and fits your body perfectly.
Drawing your own tattoo is really cool if you have the ability, that’s a special way to represent your bond with Tiny.

I think your first tattoo should be a small one so u know what it feels like, and then if you don't mind the pain then go bigger later on.
I got my first tattoo the other day, and I plan on doing that. I started with one part that can stand on its own, it took a little over 2 hrs, and now I've decided that I definitely want to go back and get the rest of it done! But it's nice to have that choice
My first tattoo covered my entire forearm. Pain is relative and it tickled, and I’m a pretty skinny guy. My thinking process is go big or go home
Go big or go home
Yeah my first one was a big knee cap piece 😂 go big or go home. pain is temporary
Yeah, kinda wish I did that because my first tattoo was an entire sleeve and that shit hurted
Totally surprised that the Pocket Watch won. That was a really amateur drawing and the watch lacked details. The oval at the top (the bow) was just slapped on top and doesn't look connected to anything. Not a good tattoo.
Quitus Maximus was it just me, or did she say 9:02, but that was not 9:02?
I swear the pocket watch wanted 9:02, but that is NOT what was tatted.
george Richan He tattooed a completely different time and both the clock minute and hour hand are the same length so you can’t tell if one is pointing out the hour or minute
I thought it was a gorgeous tattoo and something that I could absolutely imagine having myself.
@@hannag4768 so many better tattoos of pocket watches out there. But to each their own.
I came very close to passing out during a tattoo. Crazy part is I was in a full conversation with the artist at the time and I wasn't breathing enough. Went from full conversation, pain was fine, to my eyesight caving in and nearly going out. Ended up eating a few Skittles, smoking a cigarette, drinking a bottle of water and finishing.
yeah doing tattoos to tattoo virgins as one of the first episodes was not a good idea.
Customer: "I'm super nervous"
Artist: "so am i"

I facepalmed so hard when I heard that, like bruh that’s the last thing you wanna say to someone getting their first tattoo
This doesn’t really count as a test of fundamentals as it is a test of speed. Art takes time.
THIS. I have always thought they should have had a different limit instead of the time, maybe a body part restriction or certain size they couldn't go over. but everyone works at a different speed, and each person getting tattooed feels pain different, and timing the tattoo just makes people rush and not produce good PERMANENT work
@@cloudnado67 i thought it was so stupid. some of them had SUPER detailed tats and some didn't..
I'm not denying it's there, but I can't see the cut in Ron's
OMG I thought it was just me haha I was thinking to myself "Where's the cut??"
I was staring at it sooooo hard and i still couldnt see it
It's really hard to see cause it's in the solid black part, but it's rough
“Just keep sitting still you’re sitting like a champ” *camera pans to him sleeping*
I remember getting my hannya flash piece and I fell asleep during it and the artist kind of freaked out thinking I passed out, but man getting tattoos are so relaxing to me

Getting tattoo's for me is like therapy lmao. On my last session of my half sleeve I totally didn't fall asleep during the 5 hour session. Hats off to the virgin who got their ribs done first go.
2:10 rule of thumb: don’t tell the virgin canvas who ur about to tattoo that ur nervous
6:12 - mens fears: a cute girl walking into a tat shop and walking out a little less cute
womens fears: also involve men just a little different lmao
THIS
"men" is already in plural.
For anyone here who is also a tattoo virgin, a tattoo needle feels like someone is carving into you with a knife. It fades to a dull burn over meaty areas like a thigh, but over ribs and hips you feel every line as it happens. Especially over ribs you also really feel the vibration of the machine.
I definitely agree with the vibration. For me, it just felt like someone was scratching me really hard for hours lol
They feel like a cat scratching me but honestly, nothing nightmarish at all. I fell asleep during my 4 hour session cause I felt sooo relaxed lol
I would describe it as burning hot cat scratches in less painful areas. It’s not like it’s even close to the worst pain I’ve felt but it definitely hurts
Do you have a tattoo on the back side of your forearm? I really want a piece there but I’m nervous about the pain level. It’s meaty so it’s gonna be less painful than other areas but I still don’t know how much it’ll hurt
eric did soo well, i could feel the warmth of it , he earned it man

Really not that bad. Don’t be so sensitive, literally nothing they said in this video was offensive.
@@mtn7836 They criticized one of the tattoos mainly because it was tattooed on a female. That's not how you judge, they should judge the tattoo and only the tattoo. And It's not about being sensitive, women didn't have a choice in what they wanted to do with their bodies for a long time; they honestly still can't do a lot of things with their bodies.
