I never ever write on You Tube ... so bear with me as I share memories of this. I was at this show (well, one the nights of this recording session in LA). Tom wanted to record live, and instead of taking the gear on the road, he set up the Wiltern for something like 3 days, and recorded everything (which became the Plantation album). Mics were everywhere...even hanging from the ceiling. Maybe 2500 people. To keep others from profiting, you could only get tickets the day of the show, by waiting in line AT the theater, it there was a max # per person. I got 2 tickets, took my girlfriend, and Micheal J Fox was only 4 or 5 seats away from me - even got to talk to him about his guitar playing on Back to the Future. The horn section was Tower of Power ... simply awesome. Tom sat at the edge of the stage solo with an acoustic for one song. So fun, so casual and so at ease with the crowd. I got to see him several times ... glad for that, but sad about his passing. Somehow feels like part of my youth is gone. Other artists have passed - Elvis, Hendrix, Morrison, Lennon from earlier years ... Stevie Ray, Prince, Cobain from later years ... but Petty was my years ... and it hurts. I'm glad we have the songs and memories. RIP Tom ...
Very nice story to share with us RUclipsrs and even better to be able to relive that day with these vids !!!! I saw TOM PETTY and The HEARTBREAKERS only once in 2014 at RED ROCKS AMPHITHEATRE and it was the best concert of my life !!!! Miss TOM deeply as well !!!! R I P
No great rock singer/band ever succeeded without a spectacular guitar player, The Beatles had George Harrison, Led Zep had Jimmie Page, Freddie Mercury had Brian May, and Tom Petty had Mike Campbell. Soup's amazing talent is on display in this song providing the drive and energy of what I consider to be Tom Petty's Magnum Opus.
This was superb! How many out here agree that Mike Campbell doesn't get enough recognition as an amazing guitar player? I do miss Stan Lynch and Howie Epstein rest in peace. I remember the summer of 85 sleeping downstairs in our living room with the a/c on and listening to this on my Walkman. God, I wish I was 15 again and the great music we had!
My heart broke into a million pieces when this magicaL brilliant talented ethereal man passed away...I will always cherish you Tom Petty until the day I die..xoxo love yOu forevah&hhhh
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in their prime. Mike is an awesome guitar player that doesn't show off or pose, he just plays. What can you say about Tom, except a true Rock legend?
Springsteen and the E Street Band come the closest but even with them their peak was 80-81 The River album n World Tour that followed. 2 million albums sold, only PF The Wall Tour grossed more Queen came 3rd yet had their anonymity. but after that ...over. so ur so correct if that's all there was then it's over with the great TP passing.
This album was when Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were at their peak as a band. Southern Accents was recorded at TP's home studio without Jimmy Iovine keeping them in check. Lots of cocaine and the famous incident where TP broke his hand in frustration over some of the music. Still it lead to this amazing live album and the crazy "Don't Come Around Here No More" video.
Ho sempre pensato che fosse dei fine 80...😂 Comunque nn importa,TomPetty è e rimarrà x sempre un grandissimo cantautore 😢 No dai, xazzooooo tom mi piace da sempre😂
Tornado1994 it turned out to be from an od of pain meds, for the broken hip. Heart disease was involved, though. His widow said, on Instagram, that the arteries to his hip were blocked. The hip bone died of lack of blood flow. That’s why it cracked, and eventually broke.
I saw Tom Petty many years ago, and he said ask us all to sit down....he said he couldn't see the people in the back. We were at Arleen Schiner in Portland OR. it was 1982
This was the first time I saw Tom Petty in 1985 and I was 6 months pregnant, that was an awesome concert and I think my son enjoyed it, too, he kept kicking me. The backdrops were eye catching, well worth the wait for tickets. I saw him 3 times more and he never disappointed concert goes. He had us eating out of his hands
this very song from poplar creek(chicago) in 1985 still stands in my memory and always will. I was just a kid then but I knew this was my music for the rest of my life.
Agree.. SuddenSparkes! Always remember "that sound" is due largely to that band behind him called THE HEARTBREAKERS! Stan Lynch(drums) is 1 of my all time favs. They all "harmonize chemistry wise terrific! They worked w/Stevie Nicks, did whole Don Henley album-Building the perfect beast, etc. While Tom is a unique front man & had very good solo success, He was never as good with other band members(in my humble opinion) as he was w/THE HEARTBREAKERS! I really miss those original guys....GOD Bless
Sorry Sir! This is probably as far as it gets. I and quite a few others have been pestering Mr. Petty regarding giving out "Pack" on DVD. BR, etc. For twenty fuckin' odd years. Probably this is the closest U get to your wet dream.
My favorite song ❤️❤️😘❤️❤️💙💜💙 by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I felt like this when I broke with my son's father. Don't walk down MY street. Stay out of MY store. Don't darken my door. I miss you Tom. RIP
The last time i listened to this song it wasnt even on the radio or anything, in fact i was wandering around my town and in my head every time they said STOP! my body would turn into a splash of red paint and i would literally cease to exist for a moment... but i never stopped walking that night
gr8 tune...i was livin' in ocala...they were the house band at THE JOINT IN THE WOODS...i was 15,,,we usta' sit inna' parkin' lot n listen to the early tunes...never heard anything like it

Super cool story.....pieces of are lives are woven with these artists.
Beautiful story. Thank you for sharing
There will never ever be ,a better era of music than this ,all of it ,thank you
Music is really like a time machine isn't it? Years pass at a frightening pace. But we had the best music!
When he puts that hat on you know shit's about to go down

BTW mike Campbell also co-wrote Boys of Summer w/Don Henley, just in case you weren't convinced of his talent...
@@danleblanc2321 I’m know gonna listen to that Don Henly track…after this of course!
This was superb! How many out here agree that Mike Campbell doesn't get enough recognition as an amazing guitar player? I do miss Stan Lynch and Howie Epstein rest in peace. He’s phenomenal. He’s easily top five. Not flamboyant, just a rock solid musician.
100% agree. He's hands down my favorite guitar player.
100% agree with you on that
Mike Campbell is the GOAT
Big Guitar Mike.
Stan Lynch ain't just a drummer....
He is a SOUND ! 💎™
One of the most talented, modest and unassuming gentleman of rock; then, now and forever. Take a bow Mister Petty.
if only he wasn't a heroin addict
My heart broke into a million pieces when this magicaL brilliant talented ethereal man passed away...I will always cherish you Tom Petty until the day I die..xoxo love yOu forevah&hhhh
To see Tom so close to the audience is very cool. He was the ultimate performer because he knew he was bad ass
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in their prime. Mike is an awesome guitar player that doesn't show off or pose, he just plays. What can you say about Tom, except a true Rock legend?
none of these guys showed off...didn't need to...
91 was prime
I love it. You don't see live shows like this anymore :(
Springsteen and the E Street Band come the closest but even with them their peak was 80-81 The River album n World Tour that followed. 2 million albums sold, only PF The Wall Tour grossed more Queen came 3rd yet had their anonymity. but after that ...over. so ur so correct if that's all there was then it's over with the great TP passing.
Petty is one of the unparalleled live performers of our lifetime.
This just rocks. Plain and simple.
This is the song that made me a die hard Tom Petty fan! Miss ya Tom.
RIP, Tom. I can't even believe it.
R.I.P Tom, thanks for your amazing music, I will listen to you till the day I go!
girls killing it
Crying. RIP, Tom. You were awesome and so very cool.
its ok we have him in our hearts and his music videos
C.A. Hall moi aussi je m'en remets pas :'I
Très triste et inattendu. Au moins, nous avons encore sa musique, comme un autre intervenant a dit. (Hope that is correct!)
C.A. Hall oui c'est correct ! In my opinion one of the best bands in the world.Rest in peace Tom Petty, and Howie Epstein
Tom Petty - rock genius.
How sad. Been following him since the early 80s. Saw him a few times. For me the biggest loss to rock Music since George Harrison passed away.
First line on Mike Campbell's resume: "Certified badass"
If i'm correct, this was written by Dave Stewart (Eurythmics). It certainly sounds different from your Tom Petty catalog
❤❤❤ those guitar players are Awesome!
Nothing compares to the 80's❤❤❤
I play this song whenever someone knocks on my door during this pandemic
Lol
🤣
My senior year in high school. My favorite band.
it was all so real...face to face ..."honey please admit it's over "
Tom Petty rocked long and hard and was incredible until the day he died but this is the best line-up in his 40+ years with the Heartbreakers.

When Music had soul!!!
His untimely passing is a hard one to take. :(
NO NAME it was out of the blue, and we don't know why.
Melissa Gerber Heart Disease. He smoked heavily for decades.
Tornado1994 it turned out to be from an od of pain meds, for the broken hip.
Heart disease was involved, though. His widow said, on Instagram, that the arteries to his hip were blocked.
The hip bone died of lack of blood flow. That’s why it cracked, and eventually broke.

So many concerts. Saw this song performed often. It was a staple for many years.
Tom Petty Always Loved, Never Forgotten Forever Missed.
This is their best version of this song. They aren't constrained by the studio and just let it rip here.
No way...into the great wide open tour was best
The Heartbreakers are such a phenomenal band. This is when they were at their greatest.
We love you. Rest in peace

YES.... phenomenal song....goosebumps!!!!!!
Still unbelievable that he is gone..
I love that guy.
5:24 Love the bloopers from the music video. I'd love to see a behind the scenes or a making of documentary if they ever made any.
Sorry Sir! This is probably as far as it gets. I and quite a few others have been pestering Mr. Petty regarding giving out "Pack" on DVD. BR, etc. For twenty fuckin' odd years. Probably this is the closest U get to your wet dream.
I meant a documentary about the music video lol, or to see them filming it, but yeah I wonder why they still never made a DVD of this concert
My favorite song ❤️❤️😘❤️❤️💙💜💙 by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I felt like this when I broke with my son's father. Don't walk down MY street. Stay out of MY store. Don't darken my door. I miss you Tom. RIP
