The 4th doctor's first title sequence was created using a technique called slit scan. It's the same effect used for the Stargate sequence in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The 13th Doctor's title sequence is proof that when you let the person behind the concept actually make the title sequence (Ben Pickles aka John Smith VFX) and hire them, something incredible comes out of it. The problem with 12's is they just based it on the original concept by Billy Hanshaw but handed it off to BBC Wales VFX to do it instead of letting Billy do it himself and it ended up looking REALLY cheap - also for some reason that title sequence would sometimes be out of sync with the music for some reason, how does that happen?! my title sequence ranking would be: 1. Thirteenth Doctor (2018 - 2022) 2. Eleventh Doctor S5/S6 (2010 - 2011) 3. Tenth Doctor V2 (2007 - 2010) 4. Ninth Doctor and Tenth Doctor V1 (2005 - 2007) 5. Fourth Doctor V2 and Fifth Doctor (1980 - 1984) 6. Sixth Doctor (1984 - 1986) 7. First Doctor and Second Doctor V1 (1963 - 1967) 8. Fourth Doctor V1 (1974 - 1980) 9. Third Doctor V2 (1973 - 1974) 10. Third Doctor V1 (1970 - 1973) 11. Second Doctor V2 (1967 - 1969) 12. Eighth Doctor (1996) 13. Seventh Doctor (1987 - 1989) 14. Twelfth Doctor (2014 - 2017) 15. Eleventh Doctor S7a (2012) 16. Eleventh Doctor S7b (2012 - 2013)
The 7th doctors opening is not the first time we see the Tardis spin. That goes to the 2nd doctor era (possibly even 1st considering all the missing episodes) where we see it in flight multiple times.
im gonna be honest the title sequence is something I don't concern myself with BUT if we ever got a doctor who anime with a opening inspired by anime that would be chefs kiss perfection
I mean I like watching them because they’re trippy, and it gets me excited for the show. It’s something that you can look at, and instantly know which era you’re watching. Though that gets pushed aside in new who. Now they have a pre-credit scene.
1.I don't like 12's, but to its credit I don't think it was intended to be diegetic, only a surreal representation of what the tardis offers. 2. 2's logo doesn't look like Times New Roman. It IS Times New Roman.
As someone who has never seen Doctor Who apart from a single episode from the ‘70s, I think I’m a good person to judge how accurate this list is. I love the title sequence so much though, always love your commentary, Pup!
Saw this Sonic youtuber yesterday and watched a video. Had another video in my recommended this morning which I watched. Sees a Doctor Who video recently uploaded in my recommendations, and and suprised to see its the Sonic guy😄
The faces have been a staple of the intro since season 4 back in the 60s, I honestly get disappointed when the modern series doesn't have the faces in them.
@@Foxyyy_RUclips Well if you like it that's fine, eye of the beholder and all that. I think maybe if the gung stayed purple like how it starts instead of the sickly brown I would like it more. Even though it is always going to be my least favourite Title Sequence.
I dunno. I love it. Maybe because it reminds so much of the wormhole sequence in Interstellar. Just space morphing in an impossible way. But yeah, art is subjective.
Search ‘slit scan’ and Bernard Lodge. That will bring up a video on how they did the second Pertwee/first Baker titles. Nint: You’ll need a rostrum camera, card, scissors/scalple and some old plastic carrier bags.
Hence why I think the Series 3 titles are the definitive ones of that era. My favourite rendition of the theme along with the brighter logo. I do like Series 4 as well, but the Series 1-3 theme just takes it for me.
I’m curious, what are your top 10 Murray gold arrangements from series 1 to 10 in modern who. For me, I liked infinite potential and the cybermen theme.
I really like the idea of the 13th Doctor’s opening titles. The first time I saw it, I picked up on the homages to the 1st Doctor’s intro and I loved that. But in practice it just feels cluttered and there’s too much of a color clash for my liking. And frankly, I actually like the face in the vortex.
I've noticed however that the Series 7A titles are getting darker and darker each episodes, like if they were approaching a dark event (for example Amy and Rory's deaths). It's probably the ONLY ONE great thing they've done with those.
I will never not see the wolf drinking tea in the 7B opening. I’d love to see an episode about an incorporeal space wolf invading a planet in order to get his precious tea leaves
I agree that the 9th/10th Doctor's titles have stood the test of time, considering they're CGI. It's easy to be blinded by nostalgia with them considering, like many other fans, they were the first titles this face saw, so I have a great fondness for them. And in my personal opinion, I don't think they have been bettered. Quality-wise, the 2010 and 13th Doctor titles do rival it, but the 2005 titles do remain the definitive example of what the titles should look like: fast-paced, exciting, adventurous and they seem to have been extremely well-made throughout and they were paired with my favourite themes of the revival so what's not to love?
Eeeh, I'm not too picky about these but the only title sequence I really dislike is the 7th Doctor's... the digital 3D effects... feels like the technology wasn't quite ready for what they were trying to make it do. The resolution on some elements is so bad it's kinda hard to make out what they're supposed to be or what they're doing. But mainly I just dislike the sense of floating in one place instead of having the feeling of forwards motion that almost all the other title sequences have managed to convey on some level. It's a really great, simple way of making you feel you're being pulled into the story and it's just totally absent there. I don't really like the synths they used in that version of the music either -- the bass is weirdly clipped and nasal, the main melody lead sounds like they took an FM synth and tried to make it sound like it was analog, and the whole mix is lacking punch in the low end, especially compared to the two versions that came before it. It's missing the intro too which... it works better with the visual, I'll admit, but it still leaves the music track feeling like an abridged version. The saving grace of it, I suppose, is that they did at least get to make it. If they had waited a few more years for the technology to catch up with what they wanted to do, they wouldn't have had a show anymore. Is too bad for me though since the last couple seasons of the classic series is one of my favourite eras of the show. ;)
Love and monsters is still an incredible episode. I know you didn't ask but I answered. Why can't doctor who just be fun every now and again? Thats why I oppreciate your episode. (Also thanks for uploading more Doctor who content)
-Series 7 had the best. All of them were thrilling, exciting, etc. -Matt Smith's first one was too slow and too clearly just stormy clouds... like, surely the time vortex is more abstract than that. -Capaldi had terrible ones except for the snowy one. The original fanmade one was electric though. -Tom Baker's main one is the worst. I like nothing about it. -Davison's was good except I can't stand how his face appears in slits. I detest that moment. -Jodie's titles are ruined by the last bit of em where it moves really fast while having some sort of flat texture to the squareish walls. I don't know how to describe it but I can't even look at it... it feels like it's trying to make me travel sick. -Kinda love McCoy's one.... the asteroids don't look like asteroids, but I can't get enough of the massive 3D letters at the end.
Well my list would be a bit different a few from your bottom would be next to my top, like I really love the 12th one. But I'm also a huge fan of the face in the title. I don't think you talked about my least favorite one but maybe you disqualified it but the new who series 5 were they get rid of the vortex and have Amy telling her story felt so wrong
Flip 7th doctor and 12th doctor's placement and I'll agree with almost everything. 7th's entrance was technically impressive at the time but man, it has aged badly. The theme is still cool. The faces are only an issue for me with the 3rd doctor intros. There's such thing as good campiness like the 6th Doctor's face with his cheeky smile.
I’m probably very biased, but I absolutely adored and still do enjoy the seventh doctors title sequence. The bias solely comes from the fact I met Sylvester McCoy and he’s an ABSOLUTE JOY to talk with. Along side this he knew my fathers mother cause they lived close to each other which shocked me and my father, but it was. I overall enjoyed Sylvester’s Era, I will agree it certainly is dated, but seeing fans update it from what it was to current effects that we have today is gorgeous. But it is kinda funny they had to spray Sylvester’s face with some sort of Silver paint spray and I assume this was done so his face could be faded in properly CGI wise whilst not being intrusive.
In my opinion, the 7th Doctors and the 13th Doctors title sequences are tied for WORST title sequence and theme variation. On the DVD of ROBOT, at least the American version, there is a Bonus feature with title designer Bernard Lodge, showing how he actually made the title sequence. I found it quite interesting.
It may be harsh but I feel like Jodie Whittaker's title sequence is wasted on her era. It's so good and yet it's paired with arguably the weakest and least popular iteration of the show. I wish it was used with better episodes so that it would be appreciated more
Her intro fits more with Capaldi. For me, it would also make sense to have the remake of the original opening for the first incarnation of the new regeneration cycle
I agree, I always feel Capaldi should have got something like that, whereas Jodie would have suited something more like Tennant's titles or Smith's second titles, something more upbeat and in line with her Doctor's persona.
my least favourite has always been the 3rd doctor's intro because the black in the backgrohnd just seems like a... background and not part of the actual sequence.
In my opinion, I REALLY don't like the Thirteenth Doctor's intro. I find it looks like vomit. I think what they were going for with going back to the original style was cool, but it makes me feel ill everytime I watch it.
Honestly, I like the Series 7b intro, but the blood vessels and the vortex texture really takes points away for me. Though, I can somewhat understand the explosions considering how dangerous and potentially destructive the time vortex can be (shown by the Series 7a intro), especially with foreign material flying around.
youre are quite cool Not sure if that's genuine slip-up, or if you put a deliberate error at the end, to know people (at least nitpicky ones) watched to the end, and to increase viewer engagement or something? Well, you got me with it.
The 7th Doctors title will always be last place for me, the CGI is terrible and at the time hadn't been refined yet. But the worst sin would be that horrid version of the theme song which makes me cringe every time I hear it. Definitely last place in my book.

Agree with a lot of this list APART from the low placement of Peter Capaldi’s titles with the clock faces and cogs. Love that one.
I love how you’re sporting the 14th Doctor’s suit 😂
