To me her artistry is unmatched. I get that this is a sport, but the way she captures the heart and soul of every piece she skates to is what has made her the most memorable female skater for me. She tugs at my heartstrings. I love you, Mao!!!
I'm glad that the IOC has finally uploaded this. When she landed her first 3A+2T in her SP at Vancouver, I still remember how I excited I was; I jumped up in front of the TV in my parents' living room at 3 a.m. - waking up my entire family! To watch her Free Skate in Sochi, I left my first-year university exam early, to make it back home on time. I didn't do brilliantly in that exam, but it was totally worth it. Her performance to the Piano Concerto No. 2 (Rachmaninoff) is still my favourite performance of all time. Watching her skate over the years has empowered me to become more resilient and instilled a sense of self-belief in me. Mao Asada will always be my favourite athlete, and perhaps one of my greatest role models.
I was also really happy about it but got saddened when I realized how many points she lost, having to do a solo 2A and a +2T combo just to get the axel in.
@@ppnexus2000 I don't think she was thinking of reducing the difficulty level to get the score. She was aiming for the best performance she could do at this time. She was the first female athlete to jump 3A three times in Vancouver, but she cried sadly because of mistakes in other jumps. In FS at Sochi, she also jumped 3A, even though her coach told her to change to 2A. In FS at Beijing, too, Hanyu could have won a medal if she had changed to 3A. But he tried 4A. Just like Rengoku did with an enemy he knew was stronger than he was, but he didn't take him up on his offer and kept his faith. I think what they did was not in vain. I respect them for taking on something so difficult.
@@Google-U Haha love the analogy based on my profile picture. I realize that but still. The judging system forced her to lose 5-10 points that she could've had with the 3A if she didn't have to do a solo 2A and +2T combo.

The Rachmaninov FP is phenomenal. I am from the UK, I do feel Mao was unfairly singled out for under-rotations and edge calls, especially with what skaters got away with in the past, and if I am honest what some skaters seem to get away with now (and even at 2014 Sochi!). She really improved her jump technique throughout her career. Her PCS should be through the roof here. And, then we get to Mao's step sequences. First, the choreography, excellent, then the technique, the edges, the twizzles, the turns, in one direction then in the other, then the musicality, she hits every note, every beat, the choreography is so tricky, because it would be obvious if she was even a fraction out of time (there is a jump in the stsq which *has* to hit the music and does of course), and then the artistry, performance, skating skills, and finally, not least *star* quality. Mao, we miss you. We hope you know you are an inspiration, special, memorable, historic, and heroic. You are beloved of this generation and will be loved and respected by generations to come.
Actually, all of Mao’s moves in the step sequence was on time and should have been on time. It would have been so obvious. Her kicks, little leg kicks and rocker and counters also had to be in time. Mao is my forever hero. The fact that she stayed on the top for a long long time and inspired so many young skaters and non-skaters, like me, really is something that one can only dream to achieve. Thank you Mao!!
I still love her so so much. She’s the best skater I’ve ever watched. Each of her performances was truly graceful, splendid and smooth. Every time I watched her, she always made me feel happy. I hope she’ll keep being involved in skating with her wonderful achievements that no one did for her long term.
After all these years I still want to say, thank you, Mao, for supporting me through all those hard moments. You have truly been a great inspiration to a lot of the figure skating fans😭
i agree!! she's an inspiration... whenever i disappointed myself with my studies or career now, i think of how she got back up post sochi sp and just find myself inspired
Mao is the complete package, watching her is like watching art, her presence is unmatched, her step sequence still to this day unmatched, her music choices and choreography always stands out from everyone, her technical arsenal was always the highlight of every competition....
That spiral sequence in Vancouver was honestly so much better in her FS because it just OOZES with power but I do like how the final spiral hits exactly on the beat in her SP. I love Mao’s Spiral Sequences
Mao proved at the Sochi Olympics that a great skater doesn't need a medal. Over the years, she has taken more pleasure in showing off her quality skills than her grades and rankings. Jumps, spins, steps, spirals... she was the only athlete in her active career with a high overall skill level, but the judges didn't love her. But instead, she got a high level of skill and a lot of fans. Great choice by the Olympic Channel to upload a great Olympic video of Mao Asada at such an anxious time! It's been a long time since I lost track of time and was fascinated. Thank you!!! :D
6:23 Mao is the only one who can skate to such kind of horrifying /dark music, while being elegant. (Rachmaninoff wrote The Bells of Moscow based on his nightmare - where he found himself lying in a coffin)

Jump, spin, step, Spiral Everything is beautiful, skilled and inspiring. Mao is the best figure skater ever. Her beauty is like a shining diamond. I love her.

Obviously you can see who’s the best skater even medal color was mismatched. I respect Korean culture and their highly aesthetics, arts, etc. and If this is not the Olympic( sport event ), I choose Kim yona’s elegancy. Anyways this is Olympic, , sport competition that each players have to gain highest scores. So, I wanted to say this is not a performing Art, this is A sport. That’s why lot of people even same skaters showed their action of unfairness. I like Koreans then don’t be angry. Just ,, count the post of videos and comments on RUclips. Especially young Russian skaters, they learned from Mao but not Yona. Whatever, I was happy to see Kim Yona’s smiles with gold medal. She seemed to me “ I’m relieved”. I think she had lot of pressure,. Also love to see Mao’s crying face ,, it was beautiful. She thought she wanted to get the Gold medal. This is what Olympic is.
Then what’s the point of this video if winning an Olympic Gold is the only thing that matters in the Figure Skating field? Can other skaters’ fan stop harassing Mao under her video? You said you like to watch her crying face? You must dislike her very much. Moreover,Mao’s artistry is also highly praised and she made a lot of iconic, elegant programs in her career such as Chopin programs, Rachmaninoff, Madame Butterfly. Not only viewers but also many experts recognize her rare talent. She is very similar to Michelle Kwan.Although they don’t have an Olympic Gold, they still manage to move the audience with their grace and legacy.
She’s eternal verities. she taught me what is true beauty from every aspect though her skating as its life. I will never be able to give an enough explanations how much i adore her. My angel Mao
Once you start watching it is hard to stop. Mao's performances are still great after all these decades and I am really looking forward to the ice show at the theater in June.
47:39 love this video outro. Just listen to that music! Very well-chosen music. So fitting. Watching all her Olympic highlights, and listening to this music it is clear: she was something special. Once in a century type of talent AND person. Yes there are athletes just as talented, but her spirit was something extra. She is like Federer in that way, if you ask me. They truly transcend the sport.
Mao is my favorite ladies skater ever. I always rooted for her even if she was having a tough time. Even tough I’m Korean, I always appreciated and respected her determination and talent, and I could always tell that competing and continually improving her skills brought her the most joy. 😌😁 She will always be one of the greats.
She missed the favor of the judges and recieved the timeless admiration of the people. Not only a champion but a role model for my genaration and many others to come
Her spiral, step sequences, flexibility, triple axels... are simply extraordinary. People criticise Mao for her wrong edges, underrotation, inconsistency with jumping 3A, but they fail to realise that she's the only woman at the time to challenge such technically difficult programmes everytime, and by that she put her chance to win at risk. Isn't that what a real athlete should look like? In this regard, I would say Mao is the best female skater of all time
Since she was a little girl, she wanted to win the competition with a perfect program, but before long, she had the ambition to show herself more evolved than the last time. I read an interview with Mao a long time ago: "I know the level I was at before, so I can't be happy if I do less than that. I have a goal and I want to achieve it, so I challenge myself." Before the Sochi FS, her coach told her to change to 2A instead of 3A, but she refused. And she succeeded. There were a lot of things that went wrong in her competitive life, but she is the best athlete ever, including those things!
Even though she has some mistakes, but Vancouver’s free program is absolutely one of the best performance at the Olympic game. 2 triple axels in one program 10 years ago?? Such a fighter. I really love her spiral sequences. Beauty.
Years after all the flutz calls (which for some reason ISU only targeted her) and the criminally underscored PCS’s, IOC & ISU owe her this tribute. Thank you Mao for bringing to this sport glorious spirals, spectacular step sequences, beautiful athleticism, and unparalleled tenacity. You will always be the GOAT of figure skating in my heart.
Legend, she is the eternal ice fairy 🧚♀️ belongs to the wonderland, she is so special in her own way, no one is comparable to her, not even any other olympic or world champion, I think she is still a role model of many skaters nowadays
Ikr! She received a lot of criticism for that too. Many people called her a baby for looking so disappointed, but those people will never know what it feels like to be in her position. The Japanese media were in her face all the time leading up to the Olympics, making it clear that they expected her to win. And then when she gets there she trips over a rut in the ice and misses crucial jumps, causing her to lose by a wide margin. How crushing that must have been for her. And then people have the audacity to say that she’s a poor sport. How would they feel if they had to stand on the podium knowing that their home country’s media is going to blast you for “letting your country down”? Anyone would have a hard time smiling after that.
Forever the queen of skating for me! 2007-2008 SP step sequence changed how women did footwork in their programs. I wish I could attend one of her Mao Thank You shows! ♥
31:01 this is honestly one of the most iconic pieces of Olympics video ever made, I think. Everyone knew - especially Mao and the present crowd - that this one fall about to be shown marked the downfall of one of the best Olympic athletes in our little world's history. She would end up with only one Olympic medal - a Silver - probably all because of this one little fall. ... But you know what? It ironically doesn't matter. Mao Asada is still and always will be one of the most phenomenal, utterly breathtaking talents to ever strap on skates. She is an artist, and a gritty competitor; a bright bright star. Always
She restarted her own skate show ” ASADA MAO THANKS TOUR” on 15th August. That show had held over 150 times in many places in Japan after she retired competition. Please imagine! Rachmaninov, Smile , Madam butterfly and other many programs.Over 150 times ! Even now there is fear of COVID-19 .Everyone well know how hard to hold a show in this time. So I guess this restart was difficult decision for Mao. After 15th's show,I read some her fan's twitter. there filled with feeling like "I am one of the member make this show success." They clapped until there hands hurt instead of call Mao's name. I love figure skate.I love music. I love art. Mao pushed the technical boundaries of the sport with her 3A, loop combinations and difficult layouts. She had such difficult spins, complicated footwork and spirals with beautiful positions. Her artistry is incredible- probably one of if not the most versatile artist on ice. I think her scores at Vancouver and Sochi were unfair. I don't believe she is 5 points behind Yuna in the SP. I also think Mao should've destroyed the WR at Sochi with her 8 triple layout. They wouldn't let her be placed ahead of Lipnitskaia and they also made sure to hold Mao down in PCS because of her skating in an early group. If Mao was Russian or American, she might have received 160 points for her Sochi FS.

Mao is my forever hero. The fact that she stayed on the top for a long long time and inspired so many young skaters and non-skaters, like me, really is something that one can only dream to achieve. Thank you Mao!!
Mao built a legacy for the ages.

1000& agree with you!!!! :)
i agree!! she's an inspiration... whenever i disappointed myself with my studies or career now, i think of how she got back up post sochi sp and just find myself inspired

Sochi free program’s step sequence make me cry everytime🦋🦋🦋
Asada Mao is an admirable figure skater. She is never afraid to take risks in her programs. Her Sochi FS was perfect!
My favorite skater of all time. The determination and hard work she had simply inspired me so much. Thank you Mao chan.
Mao is the complete package, watching her is like watching art, her presence is unmatched, her step sequence still to this day unmatched, her music choices and choreography always stands out from everyone, her technical arsenal was always the highlight of every competition....
I love how you put your literal feelings into words
She is a ballerina on ice and a philosopher on ice. From her skating I learned about life.
That spiral sequence in Vancouver was honestly so much better in her FS because it just OOZES with power but I do like how the final spiral hits exactly on the beat in her SP.
I love Mao’s Spiral Sequences
I love her 3A and stepsequence.
Every time I watch her FS in Sochi Olympic, I am moved to tears😭❤️
Mao proved at the Sochi Olympics that a great skater doesn't need a medal.
Over the years, she has taken more pleasure in showing off her quality skills than her grades and rankings.
Jumps, spins, steps, spirals... she was the only athlete in her active career with a high overall skill level, but the judges didn't love her.
But instead, she got a high level of skill and a lot of fans.
Great choice by the Olympic Channel to upload a great Olympic video of Mao Asada at such an anxious time!
It's been a long time since I lost track of time and was fascinated. Thank you!!! :D

I love you Mao. You are really a rare skater who embodies the beauty of Figure Skating and the sportswomanship as an athlete. These programs in this video, although not all of them are flawless, just shows many great qualities of your skating like multiple triple axels, flexibility, spirals, knee control, step sequences and deep interpretation to varied music styles. If anyone cannot appreciate your brilliance ,it’s a shame.

THANK YOU FOR UPLOADING MAO’S PERFORMANCES!!! I miss her so so much!!!
She’s eternal verities. she taught me what is true beauty from every aspect though her skating as its life. I will never be able to give an enough explanations how much i adore her. My angel Mao

Thank you for making a compilation of the Mao Asada!!!
Wow thank you, i didnt expect this, Mao is my favorite, she is the beauty queen.

She had artistry, elegance, and line as well difficulty! Such a rare and beautiful combination. Wish her every happiness.
Not only a champion but a role model for my genaration and many others to come
Happy birthday to Mao! I hope to see more of you in the future! May your health and smile continue :)
I miss her. Such grace and easy jumping. And how she progressed along the years to develop such beautiful presentation ❤ thanks Mao
Mao trying her best not to be ungrateful at the podium. 😩We know how hard you’ve worked and we love you for it

Always
Mao Asada is the best skater in the world. Her skating will be remembered forever.

She looks happy in Sochi Olympic's gala. I think she's enjoying it.
First triple Axel is undoubtedly excellent.
